EPIPHANY OF THE LORD JANUARY 5, 2020
lado.
The revelation of God to the peoples is something expected since
ancient times, that is why every situation and historical event
became a propitious place for such revelation, which as such is
destined for all nations. The universal recognition of the
luminous identity of God shines on Jerusalem to attract all
nations to the encounter with the Lord who liberates and
sanctifies.
When God makes his face known, he reveals himself as a savior
not only of the chosen people, Israel, but also as a light for all
peoples, for those who were considered outside the realm of
salvation. The Easter mystery has destroyed once and for all the
boundaries that place limits on salvation, offering the good news
of the Gospel to those who lived in darkness.
With the arrival of the Messiah, king and savior, space-time
boundaries have been abolished and all the peoples of the earth
feel called to worship God. The family of Nazareth presents the
Child as a gift from God, and he is recognized as king, receiving
tributes, honors and gifts that such dignity entails. In the Child of
Bethlehem mankind recognizes his God and Lord.
The manifestation of the Lord presents us with the challenge of
offering to all peoples the Good News of a God who incarnates,
becomes close, destroys distances and gives us a face to
contemplate, a mystery to worship and it is a gift that returns us
mysteriously supportive. The epiphany is God's gift to the
Church and permanent responsibility to make a God who has
decided to share in all our condition, except in sin, close and
accessible to the world today.
• Which star guides our path? How has the Lord manifested in
our lives?
In your house, oh merciful Father, I have found life again. And
now I'm back, I have resumed my journey, but the road is no
longer the same as before; Your Word has left me with a new
heart, able to open me, to love, to listen, to accommodate so
many brothers and sisters that you will put by my side. I didn't
notice, Lord, but you made me a son, you made me born with
Jesus. Thank you, my Father! Amen.
LA EPIFANIA DEL SEÑOR ENERO 5, 2020
Who are the Three Kings (Magi) and why are they
named Melchior, Gaspar & Balthazar?
In the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, the adoration of
the Magi to the Child Jesus in Bethlehem is remembered.
However, were they kings, magicians and were they really
called Melchior, Gaspar and Balthasar? A priest and theologian
explains it.
The priest Miguel Fuentes, from the Institute of the Incarnate
Word, explains on the website “The Theologian Responds” that
“the term 'magi' (magoi) that appears in Mt 2.1 refers to what in
ancient times was called' wise '”
"In this case they were wise men who came‘ from the East ’(Mt
2,1), which may be a reference to Arabia, Mesopotamia or
somewhere else east of Palestine."
Father Fuentes points out that "the fact that they were guided by
a star (2,2) suggests that they were instructed in astrology or in
the science of navigation and in the calculation of time by
means of stellar configurations."
“Apart from a tribe of Media named this way, the magi appear,
in their first time, as a priestly caste of Media and Persia. They
also dedicated themselves to the study of wisdom and observers
of justice and virtue’. Cicero says they are ‘the kind of wise men
and doctors in Persia’. ”
It was the writer and theologian of the third century Origen, says
Fr. Fuentes, "who first saw that they were three magi because of
the three gifts offered to the child."
Father Fuentes also states that "before the 6th century, no author
expressly states that they were kings, except, perhaps Tertullian
who suggested that they were" almost kings. "
"This became popular for interpreting the reference to Psalm
72.10 (the kings of the earth will prostrate and offer their gifts),
which seems to be implicit in the story of St. Matthew."
"The art presents them as kings since the eighth century, while
in the paintings of the catacombs of Santa Priscila, from the
beginning of the II-IV century, he represents them only as noble
Persians," he says.
However, he adds, "the New Testament is silent about the
number and its intended royalty."
From the eighth century onwards, Fr. Fuentes continued, the
Magi "receive names, with some variations (the first were
Bithisarea, Melchior and Gathaspa)".
"The current Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar, are given, in the
ninth century, the historian Agnello, in his work‘ Pontificalis
Ecclesiae Ravennatis ’".
"Already in the Middle Ages they were even revered as saints,"
he says.
"And also the scene of the magicians worshiping the Child Jesus
became a favorite subject in the art of bas-reliefs, miniatures
and stained glass," he concludes.
miniaturas y vitrales”, finaliza.
