1. El “Se” Impersonal

In English you can hear statements like:

1.One can never have enough socks.They say that you should never discuss religion or politics.You should be kind to children and animals.People need to eat more fruits and vegetables.Anyone can play guitar.Someone should write an intriguing book about grammar.No one should ever kick puppies.

These are “impersonal expressions”. In other words, we don’t really have anyone in mind when we say them. We mean people in general. This is what we mean by “impersonal”.

SE IMPERSONAL1. The impersonal se plus a verb can be used to talk about generalizations, about what is or isn’t done somewhere.

2. When using the impersonal se, the subject is never specified, and the verb is only used in the third person singular form (él, ella, Ud.). It can mean “they”, “one” or “you”.

Se vive bien en este pueblo.(One) or (they-the people) live well in this town.

Se trabaja mucho en este país.

(One) works a lot in this country.

Where can (you or someone) buy a map?.

¿Dónde se puede comprar un mapa?

Se vende pan en la panadería. Bread is sold at the bakery.

Se venden flores en la floristería. Flowers are sold at the flower shop.

Passive seThe pronoun se can also be used to say that something is done,

without saying WHO DOES IT. The verb

agrees in NUMBER with the noun receiving the action. This is called

passive se.

Se prohibe fumar. Smoking is prohibitted/forbidden.

Se prohiben niños sin supervisión.

Children without supervision are prohibitted/forbidden.

No se permite nadar. Smoking is not allowed.

Se permiten animales. Animals are allowed.
