Ubicada en la zona central de lacordillera gaditana entre la Sierradel Caíllo y la Depresión deBenaocaz, la localidad ha vistopoblar sus tierras a multitud deetnias y culturas diferentes que lehan ido aportando parte de la his-toria y de los recuerdos que con-forman su memoria. Libio-feni-cios, celtas o romanos dejaron suimpronta en las Vegas del RíoMajaceite, el antiguo camino deManga y en Arroyo Seco o elBarrio Nazarí de estrechas y em-pedradas callejuelas, torreonesdefensivos, muros con saeteras,puentes y casas fortificadas. Mástarde fue Don Rodrigo Ponce deLeón, marqués de Cádiz, el encar-gado en 1485 de conquistar la re-gión e integrar a la localidad den-tro del señorío de las Siete Villas.

La localidad ha sabido hacer usode todos y cada uno de los recur-sos. Rica en ganadería que le pro-porciona una excelente chacina yque le han dado fama y prestigiogracias a la calidad y sabor de susjamones de pata negra. Además deunos quesos de oveja y cabra ela-borados como antaño y con un sa-bor inconfundible e irrepetible danun toque especial a todos sus pla-tos, siendo el más preciado el refri-to banaocaceño, hecho a partir delmejor aceite de oliva, productos dela huerta y las mejores chacinas.

Benaocaz se halla muy cercana alrío Tavizna, paraje bucólico e idó-neo para huir de la rutina y acam-

par a la vera de su orilla, ademásde poner en práctica el arte de lapesca o de la caza de la perdiz, elconejo o el venado. Se encuentradentro del Parque Natural Sierrade Grazalema y es uno de los luga-res más exuberantes de Españadonde podemos encontrar en se-milibertad, por ejemplo, cerdosibéricos. El Parque engloba las po-blaciones de Ubrique, la propiaBenaocaz, El Bosque, Grazalema yVillaluenga del Rosario. Todasellas componen la ruta de los pue-blos blancos, nombre que recibenpor la costumbre de sus habitantesde encalar frecuentemente las fa-chadas de sus casas. Estos itinera-rios recorren los pueblos y caminos

de alrededor ofreciendo la posibili-dad de realizar desde excursionescortas hasta recorridos de variosdías. Un gran ejemplo de esas po-sibles salidas es la que se puededesarrollar con la subida al MonteCaillo desde el que poder admirarla belleza de las espléndidas vistasde la serranía gaditana.

La riqueza arqueológica de la Sierra de Cádiz tiene en Benaocaz uno de susmejores ejemplos, ya que en sus inmediaciones se encuentra la calzada ro-mana que une este pueblo con Ubrique y que permite un paseo turístico-cul-tural muy interesante. A los restos del barrio nazarí que se pueden contemplaren el propio núcleo urbano, habría que sumar el Castillo de Aznalmara, forta-leza nazarí y la Parroquia de San Pedro, edificada sobre una antigua mezqui-ta. Del siglo XVIII son las ermitas de San Blas y del Calvario, emblemáticas enla religiosidad popular de la zona, y de estilo barroco el Ayuntamiento. Resul-ta imprescindible la visita al Ecomuseo Histórico, en cuyas salas puede apre-ciarse el devenir de la Sierra desde la prehistoria hasta el siglo XX.

Benaocaz is one of the best examples of the archaeological richness of the Sierrade Cádiz. The surrounding area features a Roman road running between the villa-ge and neighbouring Ubrique, a great place for a cultural excursion or simply for anice walk. In addition to the remains of the Nasrid Quarter - which can be viewedright in the town centre - the Castle of Aznalmara, a Nasrid fortress, and the SanPedro Parish church, built upon an ancient mosque, are also of great interest. Theshrines of San Blas and El Calvario date back to the 18th century and are emble-matic of the popular religious tradition in the area. The Baroque-style Town Hall isanother interesting feature. A visit to the Ecomuseo Histórico (Social History Mu-seum) is a must; within its walls, visitors can learn about the historical develop-ment of the Sierra de Cádiz region from prehistoric times up until the 20th century.

Der archäologische Reichtum der Sierra de Cádiz findet in Benaocaz eines seinerParadebeispiele, denn in der Umgebung des Orts findet sich die römische Straße,die es mit Ubrique verbindet, und die zu einem interessanten touristisch-kulture-llen Ausflug einlädt. Ausser den im Ortskern selbst zu besichtigenden Resten desViertels Nazarí, gibt es die Burg Castillo de Aznalmara, eine arabische Festung,und die Pfarrkirche San Pedro, erbaut über einer alten Moschee erbaut. Aus dem18. Jahrhundert sind die Einsiedeleien San Blas und del Calvario, die sinnbildlichfür die Religiosität der Bewohner der Zone sind, sowie das Rathaus im Barockstil.Ein Besuch des Historischen Umweltmuseums darf nicht fehlen, wo man den Wer-degang der Sierra von ihrer Frühzeit bis ins 20. Jahrhundert nachvollziehen kann.

Benaocaz está ubicado en el corazón del Parque Natural Sierra de Grazalema, lo quehace que desde aquí partan muchas rutas interesantes para la práctica del senderis-mo y, en cualquier caso, para contemplar las mejores vistas panorámicas de la Sierrade Cádiz. Son ejemplos de ello la ruta del Salto del Cabrero, la Calzada Romana, elHondón y el Cao, desde donde se goza de una impresionante vista del Estrecho de Gi-braltar y de la cordillera Africana del Atlas. Hay también senderos periurbanos de granbelleza, como el del Ojo del Moro, y espacios privilegiados para los amantes de la fau-na, como las Buitreras de la Utrera, que acogen una importante colonia de buitres.

Benaocaz is located in the heart of Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park andmany interesting tourist routes start from here. These provide great opportuni-ties for trekking or simply taking in the best panoramic views the Sierra de Cá-diz has to offer. Possible routes include El Salto del Cabrero (Cabrero Falls), LaCalzada Romana (the Roman Road), El Hondón and El Cao, which affords aspectacular view of the Strait of Gibraltar and the Atlas Mountains in Africa.There are also routes of great beauty on the outskirts of the town itself, such asthat of the Ojo del Moro. Wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy such unique naturalareas as Las Buitreras de la Utrera, home to an important colony of vultures.

Benaocaz tiene fama por la elaboración artesanal de chacinas y embutidos,así como por sus quesos de oveja y de cabra. Comparte con el resto de la Sie-rra de Cádiz una exquisita cocina de caza mayor y menor, en la que el venado,la perdiz o el conejo son la base de su gastronomía. Muy populares son el co-cido de tagarninas, el cabrito a la brasa y, sobre todo, el refrito benaocaceño,un soufflé de aceite de oliva, jamón serrano, cebolla, pimiento, tomate, chori-zo ibérico, pan y morcilla. La repostería ofrece huevos nevados, suspiros, bo-rrachos, roscos trenzados y tortas de chicharrones.

Benaocaz is famous for its chacinas (cured pork products) and sausages ma-de in the traditional way, as well as for its sheep and goat cheeses. As with theentire Sierra de Cádiz region, the town features exquisite dishes made with bigand small game-meat; the primary ingredients here are venison, partridge andrabbit. The town's cocido de tagarninas (chick-pea stew with thistle), bakedgoat kid and, above all, its refrito benaocaceño (Benaocaz-style soufflé madewith olive oil, Parmaham, onions, peppers , tomato, Iberian chorizo, bread andblood pudding are all very popular. Local confectionary includes huevos neva-dos (a sort of custard with meringue), suspiros (cream puffs), borrachos (cakessoaked in syrup or liquor), roscos trenzados (plaited ring-shaped cakes) andtortas de chicharrones (pork rind cakes).

Benaocaz ist bekannt für die althergebrachte Erzeugung von Rauchfleischund Hartwürsten, sowie Schafs- und Ziegenkäsen. Es teilt mit der restlichenSierra de Cádiz eine exquisite Wildküche von Klein- und Großwild, in derdas Rotwild, das Rebhuhn oder Kaninchen die Grundlage darstellen. Sehrbeliebt ist der Schmortopf mit Goldwurzel, das Lamm vom Grill und vorallem der refrito benaocaceño. Zum Dessert gibt es huevos nevados [bes-chneite Eier], suspiros [feines Mandelgebäck], borrachos [mit Rum oder Li-kör getränktes Gebäck], roscos trenzados [Kranzgebäck] und tortas de chi-charrones [Kuchen mit Speckgrieben].

De gran interés etnográfico e importante valor patrimonial es la Fiestade San Blas, celebrada cada 3 de febrero desde el siglo XVII. Se tratabásicamente de una procesión en el que la devoción al santo mantieneantiguos ritos paganos y cristianos. Además de la Semana Santa, es in-teresante la romería de San Esteban, co-patrón de la localidad, que tie-ne lugar el primer domingo de junio. La Feria y Fiestas Mayores, a me-diados de agosto, incluyen la suelta del toro de cuerda, cantes, bailes,comidas típicas y concursos.

The festival of San Blas - which has been celebrated every February 3rd sin-ce the 17th century - is of great historical importance and cultural interest.It is centred on a procession in which ancient pagan and Christian rituals arekept alive in the expressions of devotion to the saint. Other interesting cele-brations include Holy Week and the pilgrimage of San Esteban - co-patronsaint of the town - which is held the first Sunday in June. The Feria y FiestasMayores (Big Fair and Festivals), which take place during the middle of Au-gust, feature singing, dancing, contests, traditional food and the "release ofthe toro de cuerda" bull-run.

Von großem volkskundlichen Interesse und Kulturwert ist die Fiesta deSan Blas, die jeden 3. Februar seit dem 17. Jahrhundert begangenwird; es handelt sich vor allem um eine Prozession, in der die Verehrungdes Heiligen sich mit antiken heidnischen und christlichen Ritenmischt. Neben der Karwoche ist auch die Pilgerfahrt des San Estebán,der zweite Schutzpatron des Orts, die am ersten Sonntag im Juli statt-findet, von Interesse. Die Kirmes und das Hauptfest Mitte August bein-halten das Freilassen von Stieren am Seil, Gesang, Tanz und typischesEssen sowie diverse Wettbewerbe.

Located in the central part of theCádiz mountains between the Sie-rra del Caíllo and the Benaocaz lo-wlands, this region has been thehome to many different ethnicgroups and cultures over the centu-ries with each contributing to thehistory and traditions that make up its heritage. The Libyan-Phoeni-cians, Celts, and Romans all lefttheir mark on areas like the Planesof the Majaceite River, the ancientManga road, the Arroyo Seco (Dry

Stream), and the Barrio Nazarí(Nasrid Quarter), which featuresnarrow cobbled streets, defensivetowers, bridges, walls with arrowslits, and fortified houses. Don Ro-drigo Ponce de León, Marquis ofCádiz, would later be chargedwith conquering the region in1485 and incorporating thetown into the seigniory of theSeven Villages.

The town has always made the bestof all the available resources in theregion. Sections of the routepass through nearby villages andalong local roads and offer thepossibility to make day-trips orexcursions of several days. Onesuch tour which is highly recom-mended is the climb up to MonteCaillo, where visitors can marvelat the spectacular views of thebeautiful Cádiz mountains.
