Or how many of them complain of back pain? Often osteoporosis causes these problems. May is Osteoporosis Awareness Month. We want our patients to understand whether you are 40, 50, or 60, you are never too old to help prevent, slow down, or treat osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is the most common progressive bone disease of the skeleton caused by an imbalance in the body’s bone- building cycle. This silent disease is character- ized by low bone mass, which results in weak bones that are prone to fracture. Bone mass is related to bone strength; the greater the bone mass, the stronger the bones and the less likely they are to fracture. This bone disease affects more than 25 million Americans, 80 per- cent of them women. More than one in three women over the age of 50 will experience an osteoporotic frac- ture during their lifetime. Each year, osteoporosis causes more than 1.3 million fractures, including 500,000 spinal fractures, 250,000 hip frac- tures and 240,000 wrist fractures. RISK FACTORS—Osteoporosis is not a disease that suddenly affects the elderly, but a progressive dis- ease that often begins: ! after a woman reaches menopause (in the first five years after meno- pause, women can lose up to 25 percent of their total bone mass because of a drop in estrogen levels; bone loss then continues throughout life.) ! other risk factors include total hysterectomy, thin, small build; chronic use of anti-inflammatory steroids, smoking, lack of exercise excessive doses of thyroid medica- tions or anticonvulsants, family history of osteoporosis or fractures. BONE STRENGTH AND OSTEO- POROSIS—There are at least four factors that influence bone strength: ! the kind of skeleton you inherit from your parents and ancestors (genetics). ! how much weight-bearing exercise you get throughout your life. ! how much calcium is available for use in your bloodstream. ! and the right hormone balance. SYMPTOMS—Because bone loss occurs slowly and silently, osteoporo- sis often goes unrecognized for many years until a fracture occurs. Spinal fractures gradually collapse the bones of the spine, causing height loss, pain and a deformed (hump) back. Osteoporosis often progresses without symptoms for many years until a woman’s bones can become so fragile that even bending to pick up a newspaper can result in fractures of the spine. DIAGNOSIS—First, your physician will evaluate you for osteoporosis. Menopause is the single most impor- tant risk factor. Then all other risk fac- tors are evaluated. A decrease in height and curvature of the spine are other indications of osteoporosis. However, a woman can have this disease with- out any symptoms or risk factors. Now, there are several types of bone mass measurement tests that help physicians to identify low bone mass. Continued on page 2...

A Probably not. Heredity, repeated pregnancies, and work thatrequires prolonged standing will all contribute to varicose veins. No one knows what causes spider veins—small, black or bluevessels in the skin of the inner thighs and lower legs. But there’sno evidence that jolting exercise has anything to do with eitherspider or varicose veins. In fact, varicose veins are more commonin people who are not physically active.

A This is one of the best ways to exercise your entire body. Thesliding seat works your leg muscles, and the rowing actions worksthe muscles in your arms, shoulders, and back. It’s excellentfor aerobic fitness and for building muscular strength andendurance. Rowing is also a very good way to burn calories andincrease flexibility. However, since rowing involves a fair degreeof back flexion, those with recurrent back problems should firstcheck with their physician.

Marriage...Speak Gently

Married couples who speak positively of and to each other seem to have a good shot at staying married. On the other

hand, researchers find definite patterns — with 87% accuracy — in couples who eventually get divorced. Divorce predictors

include husbands who don’t let their wives give input, and wives who initiate harsh or hostile arguments.
