● It is dedicated to the 1st Prime Minister and President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah.

● It houses the bodies of both Kwame Nkrumah and his wife Fathia Nkrumah.

● Located in downtown Accra, the capital of Ghana.

Black Star Gate

● Kwame Nkrumah built the Black Star Gate to celebrate his nation’s newfound autonomy.

○ He commissioned the construction of a huge public square.

● “Freedom and Justice”● Black Star Square, also known as Independence

Square, is located in Accra, Ghana.● Now, there are major military and civic parades

in the Ghanaian capital that occur here.

Chief's Castle

● Visited the Chief of Cape Coast Castle

● Upon our arrival, we were welcomed by the Chief, Osabrima Kwesi Atta II.

● We were allowed to engage in questions about the city of Cape Coast and its past.

Slave Castles

Cape Coast Castle

● 1 of the 40 “slave castles” built on the Gold Coast of West Africa by European traders.

● This castle was originally a trading port led by the Portuguese.

● Millions of slaves were sent from Africa and died along the journey.

Similarities

● Black ravens fly over the castles.

● Taught us never to let the past repeat itself again.

Elmina Castle

● 1st trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea.

● Originally built to protect the gold trade.

● Slaves were sold to Portuguese and later to Dutch traders (1637) in exchange for goods such as textiles and horses.

Female entrepreneurs in the workforce

● Women in Ghana make up 46% of all business

owners in the country.

● Equal pay for men and women for working the

same job.

● More women holding director and manager

positions, however, males still dominate in partner

positions for public accounting firms.

Adabraka Market

● The Adabraka and other markets are predominantly

women business owners.

● They sell smoked fish, souvenirs, household items, art

and crafts, and traditional West African clothing.

● They have security guards working to ensure that the

market is running safely.

● These sellers would come to set their stand as early as

6AM in the morning and leave around 8PM.

● This specific market is dominantly fish sellers who sell

all types of fish.

LadyBird

● Ladybird Logistics is Ghana’s first and only female trucking company.

● Its founder Payin Marfo was looking to create a “radical change,” when she stumbled upon the opportunity to setup Ladybird.

● Globally, Ladybird logistics is the first company to hire only female drivers.

Impacts of LadyBird

Socio-economic: ● It is empowering Ghanaian women into traditionally male-dominated industries.● Children are inspired by these women and excitedly wave at the trucks. ● Many drivers are their family’s breadwinner, through competitive salaries they are

able to provide education to their children. Hence, contributing to the betterment of the society.

Industry-wide: ● Male drivers who initially believed women couldn’t drive trucks, now respect them. ● Ladybird had zero petroleum losses and is pushing other companies to “up their

game.”

Chocoluv

● Incorporated as a sole proprietorship in 2013.● Created by a husband and wife who have a full-

time job.○ The husband is a professor and a consultant.○ The wife is a lawyer - but she followed her

dream and love for chocolate and came up with the idea of Chocoluv.

● This part time/hobby that would only make chocolate for family parties became a profitable business that is now located in airports.

Cocoa Research Instituteof Ghana

● In June 1938 the Gold Coast Department of Agriculture established the Central Cocoa Research Station at Tafo.

○ Investigates diseases and pests which has reduced cocoa production in the Eastern Province.

○ In 1992 they set up the New Products Development Unit for shea and cashew.

● Constantly testing the cocoa produced by local farmers to make sure that very chocolate produced by them. meets the high standards of chocolate every time.

● Educate local farmers in order to minimise diseases and pests in cocoa plants.

● Resourceful use as much of the cocoa as possible for things like chocolate, creams, liquor, sopas and pastries.

Kakum National Park

● Kakum national Park is a rainforest in Ghana which protects many endangered species like forest elephants, bongo elephants, and diana monkeys. The rainforest is also home to many different butterflies, birds and trees.

● Throughout the park there are several different canopy walks 30 meters from the ground. Visitors are allowed to walk through these canopy walks and we had the pleasure of doing so.

● When in the park there are also many different stations where you can get fresh coconut water.

Ghanaian Attire

● Kente is the traditional attire of the Ghanaians. It is from the Ashanti tribe which is one of the biggest tribes in Ghana.

● Kente comes in many different colors and can be tailored into many different styles.● While in Ghana we had a chance to get some fabric made into any outfit of our choice by a tailor.

Food

● We had the chance to visit many different Ghanaian restaurants from fine dining restaurants to small intimate local restaurants. From each location one thing that was evident is that Ghanaians showed their love and appreciation through their dishes.

● Some known Ghanaian dishes are RedRed, Fufu and Palm Nut Soup, and Jollof Rice.

Afro Beat

● Afrobeat is a style of music which combines different elements of african tribal music with funk,jazz and soul.

● Ghana is known for its lively Afrobeat music which began in the 1920s.

● While in Ghana we visited a restaurant called “Zen Garden” where there was a live band performing traditional ghanaian music with traditional instruments.

● We also visited an island called Treasure Island where we learned about the rising tourism and hospitality industry in Ghana. On treasure Island we also had an Afrobeat dance class where we learned the newest afrobeat dance moves.
