HERE IS THE TRAFFIC REPORT FOR 6.30 TODAY.Well, many people are now going home up the Woodstock Road, and so the road is very crowded. Traffic is slow right up to the edge of the City. However, it is not a good idea to use the Ring Road instead, because a lorry is on fire on the London Road, and this has blocked all traffic going west to the Ring Road. Instead you should go to the Plain roundabout. Then go through Headington, because the traffic there is very light today because of the strike at the hospital. Then you should go on to the ring road and drive to the east.Work on the road is making traffic go slowly on the Banbury Road near Summertown, and if you are going to Cowley, the police say that you should wait for half an hour. A cyclist was knocked off his bicycle on Magdalen Bridge, and the road is blocked while the police find out what happened. The roads through Rose Hill and the Pear Tree roundabout are clear, and traffic is moving well. Remember to drive carefully, and have a safe journey home.

OBESITYObesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems. Body mass index (BMI), a measurement which compares weight and height, defines people as overweight (pre-obese) when their BMI is between 25 kg/m2 and 30 kg/m2, and obese when it is greater than 30 kg/m2.

Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases, particularly heart disease, type 2 diabetes, breathing difficulties during sleep, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis. Obesity is most commonly caused by a combination of excessive dietary calories, lack of physical activity, and genetic susceptibility, although a few cases are caused primarily by genes, endocrine disorders, medications or psychiatric illness. Evidence to support the view that some obese people eat little yet gain weight due to a slow metabolism is limited; on average obese people have a greater energy expenditure than their thin counterparts due to the energy required to maintain an increased body mass.

The primary treatment for obesity is dieting and physical exercise. To supplement this, or in case of failure, anti-obesity drugs may be taken to reduce appetite or inhibit fat absorption. In severe cases, surgery is performed or an intragastric balloon is placed to reduce stomach volume and/or bowel length, leading to earlier satiation and reduced ability to absorb nutrients from food.

Obesity is a leading preventable cause of death worldwide, with increasing prevalence in adults and children, and authorities view it as one of the most serious public health problems of the 21s century. Obesity is stigmatized in much of the modern world (particularly in the Western world), though it was widely perceived as a symbol of wealth and fertility at other times in history, and still is in some parts of the world.

A NEW HOUSE

The day we moved house was one of the busiest days of my life. It was in December. Naturally, we had been packing for a long time, but there was still an awful lot of work to do on the actual day. At first, everything went smoothly.

The removal men arrived and began loading their van. While they were emptying room after room, my wife and I were trying to clean up. We hardly noticed the fact that it had begun to snow. Then things began to go wrong. First, a valuable table was dropped and its leg broke. Next, we lost the baby, and it was not until she started to cry that we realized she had been put into the van by mistake. We worked hard all morning, and by midday our old house was empty.

Meanwhile it continued to snow. We set off on the journey to our new house, driving slowly to avoid skidding in the icy conditions. We finally arrived at four o’clock, by which time it was dark, and three feet of snow covered the ground. Fortunately, we had quite a few people to help us unload, and by six o’clock we were in. Afterwards, we wondered how we had managed to do everything. I’ll never forget that day. Actually, I still have nightmares about it!

ARE DOLPHINS THE CLEVEREST ANIMALS?

For many years people believed that the cleverest animals after man were chimpanzees. Now, however, there is proof that dolphins may be even cleverer than these big apes.Although a dolphin lives in the sea it is not a fish. It is a mammal. It is in many ways, therefore, like a human being.Dolphins have a simple language. They are able to talk to one another. It may be possible for a man to learn how to talk to dolphins. But this will not be easy because dolphins cannot hear the kind of sounds man can make. If man wants to talk to dolphins, therefore, he will have to make a third language which both he and the dolphins can understand.Dolphins are also very friendly towards man. They often follow ships. She liked flowers. At least, he remembered somebody telling him that she liked roses. Unfortunately, at that time of year roses were very hard to find, and anyway, even if he did find them he wouldn't be able to afford them. Not roses and going out to a good restaurant. So he had got some tulips. It wasn't sure if tulips were the right things to bring, and also while he was travelling in the bus several people bumped into him and the flowers were damaged.

He felt uncomfortable in his borrowed coat, and even though Mike had promised him that it was almost a perfect fit, he felt that the sleeves were too long, and the coat didn't really go with the color of his trousers. He checked in his pocket again to make sure he had her address. He still was not sure why she had given it to him, or why she had agreed to go out that evening at all.

For a few minutes he thought about giving the whole thing up, going home and making some excuse for the following day. But he knew that this chance would not come again, and he would hate himself if he did not take it. Slowly, he walked through the rain to her street.

_______________________________________________________________THE WESTERN ALPHABET

The western alphabet, which is used in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Australia and New Zealand as well as in other countries, originated in the Middle East. The people who gave the world this alphabet were the Phoneacians, a people who established colonies all over the Mediterranean, including Carthage in Africa and Gades in Spain. In their alphabet, the letters were represented by little pictures which represented sounds. The Phoneacian A was aelph, which means "bull". And it was made from a little picture of a bull's head. The letter B was beth which meant "house", and showed the round-roofed buildings which you can still see today in Syria.

The Phoneacians had contact with another nation of sailors, the Greeks, with whom they fought and traded. The Greeks also started to use the Phoneacian alphabet. They changed the names so aelph and beth became alpha and beta. The shapes of the letters are the same but they have been turned sideways. If you know any Greek, you can try turning the letters around again, and see how they look. You will see that the curve on the right of the Greek A becomes the horns of a little bull.

Of course, the first two letters of the alphabet give it its name. Over the years there have been changes. Latin developed an alphabet with some different letters to the Greeks, and other letters have been added since. But really westerners are using the same system of writing which has served them so well for thousands of years.

31. What is the purpose of this text?A. To tell something of Phoneacian history. B. To tell the story of why we write as we do.C. To compare the western alphabet with other alphabets.D. To describe the history of the Greek alphabet.

32. Which change did the Greeks make to the Phoneacian alphabet?A. They changed the pictures to sounds.B. They turned the letters in a different direction.C. They altered the shape of the letters.D. They put a curve on the letter A.

THE SAVANNAH

The tourist looking at the African savannah on a summer afternoon might be excused for thinking that the wide yellow grass plain was completely deserted of life, almost a desert. With only a few small thorn trees sticking out through the veldt, there seems to be almost no place for a living creature to hide.

However, under those trees you might find small steenbok, sleeping in the shade, and waiting for the night to fall. There may even be a small group of lions somewhere, their bodies exactly the same shade as the tall grass around them. In the holes in the ground a host of tiny creatures, from rabbits and badgers to rats and snakes are waiting for the heat to finish.

The tall grass also hides the fact that there may be a small stream running across the middle of the plain. One clue that there may be water here is the sight of a majestic Marshall eagle circling slowly over the grassland. When he drops, he may come up with a small fish, or maybe a grass snake that has been waiting at the edge of a pool in the hope of catching a frog.

The best time to see the animals then, is in the evening, just as the sun is setting. The best time of the year to come is in late September, or early August, just before the rains. Then the animals must come to the waterholes, as there is no other place for them to drink. And they like to come while it is still light, so they can see if any dangers are creeping up on them.

So it is at sunset, and after the night falls, that the creatures of the African veldt rise and go about their business.

CITY LIFEThe cities we live in show how much we think of them. Look carefully at the city you live in. What does it say about how much people think of it? Cities are getting bigger and bigger and so are their problems.

In a big city you can see people who live in big houses and have a lot of money to spend. You can also find people who have no money or home at all. You can often see these people sleeping in parks or train stations because they don't have anywhere else to go.

Everybody wants to have a car. Some families have two or even three cars and sometimes each member of the family has their own car! Cars make it easy to get from one place to another, but they can also make our lives difficult. More and more cars mean traffic problems and air pollution. In some cities the pollution is so bad that it is a danger to people's health and to plant life, too! …

Noise pollution is another serious problem. Most noise pollution comes from cars, lorries and planes or even loud music. These annoying sounds make conversation and some kinds of work difficult and make it difficult for people to sleep. Many cities look awful because we throw a lot of rubbish in the streets. The amount of rubbish that we produce is a more serious problem. There is so much rubbish that we don't know what to do with it! Recycling is one answer to this problem but we must do a lot more if we want to make a difference.

These are just some of the problems in a city; there are others. We must act now, if we want to better things in the cities we live in. We don't have time to lose. Tomorrow may be too late.

MARK HAMILTON: FITNESS INSTRUCTOR ON A CRUISE SHIP

I thought about working on a ship after I watched a TV documentary about life on a cruise ship. It seemed really exciting. At the time I was working at my local gym. I enjoyed the job, but I’d been there for a few years, I’d never lived in a different town and I’d never been abroad. I really liked the idea of travelling and seeing the world.

I looked on the Internet and found a website with hundreds of jobs on cruise ships. I applied for a few jobs but didn’t get any. I then decided to give up my job in the gym and go on a trip around Australia. I wanted to get some experience of travelling. My boss was great and said I could go back any time, but luckily, when I returned from my trip, I got the next job I applied for. It was as a fitness instructor on a cruise ship going to the Caribbean.

Life on a cruise ship is busy, but that’s what makes it exciting. A typical cruise ship has hundreds of employees from sailors to waiters and hairdressers to tour guides. I love the variety of my work. I teach aerobics, yoga, and fitness and I’m also a personal trainer in the gym. I work twelve hours a day and have two days off per cruise for sightseeing, but that’s enough for me. It’s always great to come home, because I miss my friends and family, but then I love leaving again too.

31. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the text?A to describe his life on a cruise shipB to talk about health and fitnessC to explain why people enjoy going on cruisesD to say how difficult his life is

32. What would a reader learn about Mark before he joined the cruise ship?A He thought his job in the gym was boring.B He’d always lived in the same place.C He often travelled abroad.D He was a very good gym instructor.

33. Why did Mark give up his first job?A He was offered a job on a cruise ship.B He wanted to travel for a while.C He decided to go to the Caribbean.D He was asked to leave by his boss.

34. What does he find most difficult at work?A. working long hoursB. living with hundreds of people
