    Cooper Power Systems Type EX-Dall-film capacitors feature the latestCooper Power Systems design inno-vationsextended foil/solderlessconnections1 and laser-cut foil. Theyare designed, manufactured, andtested to meet the requirements ofall applicable ANSI/IEEE, NEMA,and IEC standards. In additionthey are designed to exceed therequirements of these standards interms of continuous rms and peakovervoltage withstand capabilities,and in tank rupture characteristics.These capacitors are especiallysuited to the rigors of industrialpower systems for:s power factor improvement

    s harmonic filter applicationss reduction of lossess reducing voltage drop

    EX-D capacitors can be installedsingly or in factory-assembledswitched or unswitched banks in:s pole mounted rackss open air substation banks

    (for outdoor or indoor application)s metal enclosures.

    CAPACITOR APPLICATlONCapacitor application requires anevaluation of the power system todetermine:s the kVAR needss the most effective locations the necessary protection.

    In general, capacitors are installed:s at the substation, to supply the

    system var needs most effectivelys ator nearthe load center, to

    obtain the optimum var supplyand voltage correction

    s at the end of the line, to achievemaximum voltage correction.

    RATINGSCooper Power Systems Type EX-Dcapacitors are rated in continuouskVAR, voltage and frequency foroperating within the -40 to +55Cambient temperature range.Designed to produce not less thanrated kVAR at rated voltage andfrequency, they are subjected to allapplicable NEMA and ANSI/IEEEstandard dielectric tests. Single-phase 50- through 400-kVARcapacitors are available.

    Capacitor rated voltage is thevoltage that can be applied terminalto terminal; for example, a 2400-voltcapacitor can be delta-connected on

    a 2400-volt system or wye-connect-ed on a 2400/ 4160-volt system. Ineach case, the voltage applied to thecapacitor terminals is 2400 volts.Because a capacitors kVAR outputvaries as the square of the ratio ofapplied voltage to rated voltage,application at the proper voltage isessential for optimum operatingperformance and long service life.

    The maximum recommendedworking voltage of an EX-D capacito

    is 125% of rated voltage. CooperPower Systems capacitors include asafety factor that permits them totoleratewithout damage momentary overvoltages caused byswitching or load changes.

    The capacitor units cataloged inthis section are designed foroperation at a rated frequency of 60Hz. kVAR output varies directly asthe ratio of applied frequency torated frequency. Capacitors designeto operate at 50 Hz or other frequencies are also available upon requestTable 1 lists the

    ratings and catalog numbers forstandard Type EX-D single- anddouble-bushing capacitors. Otherunit kVAR sizes, voltage ratings andBIL ratings are available.
