    Why consider using Flow Meters?

Flow meters are highly accurate measuringinstruments which make the Firefightersjob easier to do

Flow meters enable the Firefighter to

benefit from the many advantages of usinga flow-fed system rather than a pressure-fed system

Using Flow meters reduces the risk of injury

to Firefighters, reduces the environmentalimpact of fire-fighting and reduces wearand tear on appliances

Flow Meters: What do they do?

The Flow metermeasures the quantityof water flowing

through it in litres perminute (lpm)

The flow metermeasures the totalvolume of water

    passed through it at anincident

Flow Meters: How do They Work?Flow meters are fitted between the pump water manifold and thewater deliveries and are powered by the vehicles 24V system.

They operate by measuring the electromotive voltage caused bythe flow of water through the delivery.

    They are accurate

regardless of the flowwhether it is 180 lpm, 500lpm or 1,200 lpm.

The TSI Flow meter isinexpensive and virtuallymaintenance free

What little training isrequired is available fromTSI Flowmeters Ltd

Flow Meters: the advantages ofusing them

    Fully utilised water supplies

Branches can be used to theiroptimum

Reduced risk of injury to fire fighters

Diminished environmental impactLess wear and tear on appliances

Fully Utilized Water SuppliesAll branches are operating at their optimumefficiency.

Bursts in hoselines, kinks in hoses, andvandalised rising mains can be detectedearlier

A water officer will know exactly how muchwater is required by reading the flow meters, and can make provisions if additional sourcesare required

Branches can be used at their

optimumEach branch can flow variable quantities ofwater and flow is not reliant on one mainpressure gauge

    e.g., a 12.5mm branch will

still flow 180 lpm when a

    25mm branch is opened

    from the same pumper.

    Water is not wasted unnecessarily

Branches used at their most efficient will

extinguish the fire quicker and therefore causeless water damage

    Improvement to Firefighters working

conditionsLess jet reaction means less strain on the Firefighter atthe branch and less chance of injury. Short-termpressure and flow fluctuations on the supply side do notfeed through to the branch

There is less stress on the Pump Operator as he doesnot have to work out pressure and frictional losses andhe does not need to constantly monitor the branches. With rider ship factors down, the Pump Operator canperform his other duties such as B A E C O

Reduced engine speeds means less noise close to the

pumper. This reduces stress on the Pump Operator andfacilitates easier communication with Firefighters at thebranch

Reduction in Environmental DamageFlow meters can tell Firefighters exactlyhow much water has been used so that ifchemicals were involved they know what it

has been diluted to. Likewise, ifcontainment is required they know what isneeded to contain it. This information willbe useful when notifying the environmentalagency

Environmental issues are of major concern, especially regarding potential litigation

Less Wear and Tear on AppliancesLess diesel is used as the pumps arenot working so hard.

Parts that wear out will last longer. This translates into fewer mechanicalbreakdowns and a reduction inappliance down time.

    Flow-fed branches:

Operating ProcedureAt an incident one may run out, for example, 2 lines of hose, onewith a 12.5mm branch and another with a 25mm branch. Then, when the Firefighter asks the Pump Operator for water on theyshould state what size of branch they are using. For example, water on, no. 1 delivery with a 12.5 mm branch.

The Pump Operator can then look at the flow meter scale in thepump locker for the flow rate of the branch being used, which fora 12.5mm branch is 180 lpm, and can then set the trottle to 2,000rpm and open the delivery until the flow meter reads 180 lpm.

If the 25mm branch is now ready, the Firefighter goes to thepump operator and asks water on, no. 2 delivery with a 25mmbranch. The Pump Operator looks at the flow meter scale for the

stated branch, which is 500 lpm, and opens the no. 2 deliveryvalve until the flow meter reads 500 lpm.

    Easy to set up operating

conditionsBecause this is a flow controlledsituation, there will be very little ifany change to the flow meterreading or to the 12.5mm branch. The only adjustment required maybe to the throttle to increase or

    decrease the engine speed asrequired.

Now there are 2 branches withvery different flow rates workingfrom the same pump. Both aregiving optimum efficiency andeffectiveness.

Additional deliveries can be set up

    by following the same procedure.

    14/16

Flow-Fed: Negligible Jet ReactionIf the 25mm branch is turnedoff there will be negligible jetreaction. The only effect onthe 12.5mm branch is that itsoutput will increase by 10~20lpm, which is negligible jetreaction and easily workeable.

This also applies to branchesworking at different levels.Flow controlled branches, incontrast to pressure fed

branches, if turned off, causelittle effect on other branches.

    Safe Working

The Firefighters posture is relaxed whenusing the flow-fed system. This isbecause there is negligible jet reaction to

be concerned with, even when one branchis turned off

A branch can be run from delivery no.four, even when the three otherdeliveries from the same appliance arefeeding a monitor
