Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

Fr. James Martin, S.J, is a Jesuit priest, a contributing editor to America magazine and a New York Times bestselling author of several books including Between Heaven and Mirth: Why Joy, Humor and Laughter are the Heart of the Spiritual Life, and The Jesuit Guide to Almost Everything. Fr. Martin has written extensively on Jesuit Spirituality. Most recently Fr. Martin has written Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and the LGBT Community Can Enter Into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity.

In his new book, Fr. Martin offers a powerful, loving, and much-needed voice in a time marked by anger, prejudice, and divisiveness. Adapted from an address he gave to New Ways Ministry, a group that ministers to and advocates for LGBT Catholics, Building a Bridge provides a roadmap for repairing and strengthening the bonds that unite all of us as God's children. Fr. Martin uses the image of a two-way bridge to enable LGBT Catholics and the Church to come together in a call to end the "us" versus "them" mentality. Turning to the Catechism, he draws on the three criteria at the heart of the Christian ministry—"respect, compassion, and sensitivity"—as a model for how the Catholic Church should relate to the LGBT community.

On Thursday, May 16th, Fr. Martin will be here at Ascension to speak about his book Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and the LGBT Community Can Enter Into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity. The talk will take place right after the 7:00 PM Spanish Mass (approximately 7:40.) All are invited to come and hear Fr. Martin. His book has been very well received in many different circles. Fr. Martin will also take questions. A light reception will take place immediately following Fr. Martin’s talk. During the reception, Fr. Martin will be available to sign books as well.

I would also like to congratulate the 58 boys and girls from Ascension parish who received their First Holy Communion this weekend. The children were excited and enthusiastic about the day. The children read at the Mass, they learned their songs well and they sang together beautifully. After the mass, all the first communicants and their families were invited to the school auditorium for a party hosted by Darren and Patrice Jean and some generous parents. I’d like to extend a special word of thanks to Madison who helped the children with the music as well as Preston and Margarita. I would also like to thank our wonderful Religious Ed. teachers who prepared the children for First Communion -- Mary Baird, Miriam Ortiz, Rosie Heras, May Deldagillo, Gladys Perez, Margaret Bellon. I also wish to thank Jonathan Casilla, Ed Oscar and Tom Ortiz, and the teen volunteers as well. Also special thanks to Julia Soledispa and Teresita Navarro for help with flowers and decorating.

Thanks to Robin Klueber, the children were extremely well prepared for their First Communion and for this very beautiful celebration. Thank you Robin for your dedication and hard work! The fruits of her work were clear! Thank you again!

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,

El padre James Martin, S.J. es un sacerdote jesuita, un editor con-tribuyente de la revista America, y un autor más vendido del New York Times de varios libros, incluyendo Tiene gracia... Erin Lothes Biviano will be presenting to the parish’s RCIA group on Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si, and the con-nection between our faith and care for the environ-ment. Erin is a longtime parishioner and is Associate Pro-fessor of Theology in the College of St. Elizabeth. She re-cently presented at the Ethics in Action Conference in Rome. Erin will present to the RCIA group on Tuesday, May 7th at 7 PM in the Rectory Dining Room and all pa-rishioners are invited to attend.
