Signs are everywhere. There are street signs, hand signs, facial signs and a plethora of other types that are utilized to convey a message when seen. Sometimes people ignore those signs or refuse to obey them because they limit their “freedom” or stand in their way. Today’s Liturgy of the Word conveys the importance of Divine signs and their consequences. These signs are God’s method of communication to the very creatures He endowed with free will. Their willingness to recognize the signs and to follow their instructions will result in what is truly important to human beings – their eternal destiny.

In the Old Testament, God proclaims His knowledge of mankind’s works and thoughts. In the Book of Isaiah, God reveals His intention to send a sign in order to include all nations in His Redemptive Plan. Despite the fact that the Hebrews are His “Chosen People”, the Lord desires to extend His love to all through intermediaries whose mission will be to bring all “to Jerusalem”. These new family members will become His priests and Levites. In order to fulfill this desire, it will be mankind’s responsibility to respond to the sign and accept the Lord’s offer.

Sometimes the signs of God involve pain and suffering. Like all signs, the meaning or intent of these Divine signs can be challenging. In the Letter to the Hebrews, mankind is reminded that negative signs can produce positive effects. The author of Hebrews reminds them that God’s love is fatherly and should be viewed in that manner. Just as a father discipline’s his children to improve them and make them strong, so, too, does our Heavenly Father. Thus, trials and tribulations should not produce despair within mankind; rather, these same events should strengthen and bring healing and wholeness resulting in righteousness as exemplified in Jesus – the suffering servant.

It is in today’s Gospel by Luke that the fruit of the Divine Redemptive Plan is discussed. While traveling, Jesus is asked by a person if only a few people will be saved. As today, in Christ’s time, there were different theories regarding how many people will enter the Kingdom. Since only the Jews were considered God’s “Chosen People”, and

not all were just, the question was extremely poignant and the answer found in relation to those who kept the Covenant. Instead of answering directly, Jesus chooses to respond obliquely. Knowing the difficulties that mankind experiences, Christ responds that an individual should attempt to enter through the “narrow gate”. Christ

continues to say that people will discover this entrance difficult and laborious to pass through. In antiquity, this reference or sign was easily understood. It would be a constant struggle and not all could succeed. Jesus elaborates

further by telling them that not all who approach and claim they know the master will enter. The Messiah is clearly stating that it is not a person’s desire that will determine entrance. It is not their choice that will determine their entrance but, rather, only their actions and choices during their limited life-time will be the basis for recognition and entrance. Jesus makes it abundantly clear that these “signs” or things they do will reap reward or punishment. Entrance will not be just for the Jews but for all who recognize the Divine graces and signs from God and live their life accordingly. Finally, Christ reminds all that their time is limited and that they unexpectantly will stand before the gate seeking admission.

Holy Mother the Church reminds us that, like the Jews, we are the “Chosen People”. Like the Jews, we will find ourselves standing before the Master when we least expect it. Like the Jews, our use of God’s signs, the sacraments, will help us endure the struggles of life as children of God. Likewise, the signs we show our brothers and sisters that reflect the depth of God’s love and our actions will determine our ability to pass through the narrow gate. Jesus clearly states that our entry is not easy or guaranteed; rather, difficulties will be encountered and we must not ignore the signs of God, the sacraments, but use them to strengthen ourselves for this final test. The primary gates of Heaven were locked through the sins of Adam. Jesus, through the Cross, has opened the narrow gate and has given us the tools to use in order to enter.
