Notes on the Program

Camino del Indio (3 minutes)ATAHUALPA YUPANQUI (1908-1992)

Here the author, the great AtahualpaYupanqui, becomes the spokesman for theIndians who live in the countryside andmountains in a miserable reality, illustratedby his early compositions. His intimateknowledge of the people, landscapes, ancestral customs and the Indian soul nour-ishes his inspiration.

Malambo (5 minutes)ÉBER LOBATO (1931-2014)

Malambo is the only Argentine folk dancenot danced by a couple. It is energetic and virile. “Leaving their cows and horses andtransforming themselves into dancers, themost intrepid of gauchos would take theirplace in the center of a round they hadformed, to begin a frantic zapateo rhythm(foot tapping that often reminds us of gal-loping horses).” In this interpretation, therhythmic voices mingle with the “bombo”to recall this cadence.

Viva Jujuy (3 minutes)RAFAEL ROSSI (1896-1982)

This song illustrates the “carnavales”: thegreat feasts of the Andean highlands, where the joy and madness of the momentmake one forget the harsh living conditionsin these countries.

Doña Soledad (4 minutes)ALFREDO ZITARROSA (1936-1989)

A “Candombe” the typical African-Americanrhythm of the Rio de la Plata region, in its textreflects a social reality of the “sixties”. Thecontrast between poverty and wealth, cultureand illiteracy constantly opposed an underes-timated working class and a high-level classthat delighted in its “facilidades”, or its easy life.

El Huajchito (2 minutes)POCHA BARROS / ENRIQUE N. FARIASGOMEZ

This rhythm called “gato” (cat) is truly thenational dance of Argentina, recreated andappropriated in vocal rhythm and har-monies close to jazz. First by the group“Los Huanca Hua”, then “Jairo” and yearslater by “Cuerda y Voz” to convey the joyof “the man of the fields”. This dance trulyrepresents Argentina.

Misa Criolla (22 minutes)ARIEL RAMÍREZ (1921-2010)

The Misa Criolla, composed by ArielRamírez in 1963, is a synthesis of popularand liturgical styles. It is based on SouthAmerican folk music, particularly therhythms and melodies of Argentina. Theopening Kyrie is in the rhythm of the vidala-baguala. This music, characteristic of north-ern Argentina, depicts the feeling of loneli-ness one has from living on a deserted highplateau. The Gloria rhythm, the carnavalito,is also from the same area, but evokes thesense of rejoicing. The two sections of theGloria are separated by a recitative (Yaraví),which makes the cadence of the carnaval-ito more brilliant when it returns with a fullrhythmic accompaniment. The chacereratrunca, a folk theme of central Argentina, isthe basis of the Credo. Its obsessiverhythm accentuates the profession of faith, and the section ends with the final wordsof the prayer, which reaffirms the triumphof everlasting life. One of the most beauti-ful and unusual Bolivian folk rhythms, thecarnaval cochabambino, is used for theSanctus. It has a subdued but marked beat. The Agnus Dei is written in a typical styleof the pampas (estilo pampeano). As in theKyrie, a feeling of solitude and distance iscreated. A simple recitative expresses theuniversal longing for peace. This work haswon the unprecedented admiration of thecritics and public of Argentina and otherSouth American countries. It proves thatindigenous musical forms can communi-cate the highest values of life and that

religious beliefs can be conveyed through apopular medium of expression.

Tango Credo (38 minutes)MARTÍN PALMERI (b. 1965)

Tango Credo follows the aesthetic line ofits predecessor, the Tango Glory which Ihad the honor of premiering in Basel,Switzerland in December 2014 withKirchenchor St. Stephan Therwil. Similar tothe works that I’ve written in recent years,Tango Credo is led by the sonority of thetango-typical orchestra: strings, bandoneónand piano. The continuing challenge is tocombine this organic representative ofBuenos Aires with the contrasting soundsof the choir and, in the case with TangoCredo, with a soprano soloist. Tango Credodiffers from Tango Glory in that it is com-posed mainly of arias and choral numbers.

The piece is a concertante where the solosand the choir have a constant dialogue. Theconnection between numbers is fluid andgives continuity to the work. Tango Credoalso contains the reworking of melodicmaterial by repetition of the main theme. This is presented in the first number andcited several times throughout the work asa demonstration of the perseverance offaith. It is also worth mentioning the impor-tant role of the bandoneón in the death andresurrection of Christ. The low notes in theleft hand and pauses in the music theatri-cally represents the drama. Thank you,DCINY, for giving the title of Composer-in-Residence to me and for the opportunity tointroduce this new work with wonderfulinterpreters in the prestigious setting ofDavid Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center.”

Meet the Artists

Cuerda y Voz, Guest Artists

Cuerda y Voz presents a musical perfor-mance full of colors and harmonies that tran-scend you to the magic of the Andes. Thesefive men's voices mingle with the sound oftwo guitars, percussion, charango andAndean flutes. Their recent show, recordedlive at the Toulouse Salle Nougaro, wasstaged in a warm decor of bamboo, sur-rounded by translucent leather drums, resembling animated moons. This decora-tion, with its special symbolism, illustratesthe music being played; flexible, original androbust... songs of friendship, joy, and peacethat the group wishes to convey to the pub-lic. Through a diverse repertoire, Cuerda yVoz offers new life to the music of LatinAmerican folklore and songs often little-known. Far from the stereotypes of com-mercial Latino music, these musiciansarrange and "re-arrange" their songs creatingoriginal material. They have left an indelibleimprint and brought an authentic, moving, and sincere sound to the ears of those fortu-nate enough to hear them.

Cuerda y Voz is above all a story of friendshipbetween Danny, François, Rodrigo, Sergioand Vidal. Their story has been woven intime around a common passion for LatinAmerican folklore and music. Despite theirdifferent origins and paths, these five musi-cians have "paved the way" thanks to anatypical sound. On the guitar, Vidal andSergio vibrate their strings and mix their

voices with those of the charango, flutes andpercussions interpreted by the other musi-cians. While the history of the group hasbeen marked by the Misa por a Continente(Francisco Marin and Ruben Bareiro Saguier)and the Misa Criolla (Ramírez), the life of thequintet and exploring new music remains atthe heart of their work. Cuerda y Voz is work-ing on a new album with new arrangementsand new compositions. Their repertoire witha majority of composers from LatinAmerican, will definitely shine a new light onLatino music, often forgotten or unknownand far from the common places of musicaltourism.
