UNIDAD 4. EL ADJETIVO:

- Adjetivos atributivos y predicativos. - El orden de los adjetivos. - Los grados del adjetivo. - Los modificadores del adjetivo: el adverbio.

ALGUNAS CONSIDERACIONES:

• ADJETIVO: es una categoría de palabra que determina al nombre al que acompaña o expresa alguna de sus propiedades o cualidades.

• Según su significado y la forma de modificar al sustantivo los adjetivos pueden ser determinativos o calificativos.my horse / those bags / two biscuitsnew computer / thin boy / wet towel

• Los adjetivos en inglés son invariables, no tienen género ni número:a red shirt / two red shirts / three red cars

• Se colocan delante del sustantivo (función atributiva):They live in a modern house / Today is a nice day

• En algunos casos van detrás del verbo (función predicativa):The weather is nice today / You look tired /It tastes good / It seems easy

EL ORDEN DE LOS ADJETIVOS:

• A veces las oraciones contienen más de un adjetivo. En este caso suelen aparecer en este orden:

• 1º los que describen opiniones subjetivas beautiful, ugly, unkind, clever, dirty, important…

• 2º los que describen características reales, por este orden: tamaño, antigüedad, forma, color, procedencia y materialan ugly old house / a tall young man / a newred London bus / long straight blonde hair/ old black Italian leather shoes

LOS GRADOS DE LOS ADJETIVOS:

• COMPARATIVO: comparamos dos cosas a tres niveles: grado de igualdad (tan…como)grado de superioridad (más… que)grado de inferioridad (menos… que)

• SUPERLATIVO: comparamos al menos tres cosas y una destaca sobre las demás (el /la más…de)

COMPARATIVO DE IGUALDAD:

as + adjetivo + as

The Grand Hotel is as good as thePlazaMy marks are not as high as yours

COMPARATIVO DE SUPERIORIDAD:

adjetivos una sílaba: –er + thanadjetivos de tres o más sílabas: more + adjetivo + thanadjetivos de dos sílabas acabados en –ful / -re: more + adj + thanadjetivos de dos sílabas acabados en –y / -ly / -er: –er+ than

This house is older than mineHe is cleverer than his brotherThis book is more interesting than the othersI am more hopeful today than I was last weekYou look happier today than yesterday

*Excepciones: - Si es de una sílaba y acaba en vocal + consonante, dobla la consonante.

I will give you a bigger steak than that- Si acaba en e muda, sólo añade r.

You will be safer here than in your house.- Si acaba en l, dobla esa letra.

His character in the play is crueller than hers

COMPARATIVO DE INFERIORIDAD:less + adjetivo + than

He is less efficient than OliviaYou are less tall than I thought

SUPERLATIVO:adjetivos una sílaba: the + adjetivo + -estadjetivos de tres o más sílabas: the most + adjetivo adjetivos de dos sílabas acabados en –ful / -re: the most + adjetivo adjetivos de dos sílabas acabados en –y / -ly / -er: the + adjet + -est

This is the smallest town in the countryThis is the easiest test we have hadHe is the most expert doctor I knowWe went to the most expensive hotel in townMy graduation day was one of the happiest days of my life

*Excepciones: - Si es de una sílaba y acaba en vocal + consonante, dobla la consonante.

She is the saddest person I know- Si acaba en e muda, sólo añade -st.

This is the safest place in your house.- Si acaba en l, dobla esa letra.

ADJETIVOS CON FORMAS IRREGULARES PARA COMPARATIVO Y SUPERLATIVO:

LA FORMACIÓN DE LOS ADJETIVOS.

• Terminaciones (sufijos) más frecuentes del adjetivo:-ed / -ing / -ful / -less / -able / - ous / -ive / -al / -ic / -yinterested / interesting / useful / useless / comfortable / nervous / effective / comical / optimistic / sporty

• Prefijos más frecuentes del adjetivo:il- / im- / in- / un- / ir- / dis- / anti- / bi- / hyper-/ inter- / multi- / pre- / ultra-illogical / impossible / inconvenient / unhappy / irresponsible / disorganised / antisocial / biannual/ hypersensitive / intercontinental / multicultural / prehistoric / ultra-modern

ADJETIVOS CON PREPOSICIÓN

Ciertos adjetivos van seguidos de preposición. Los más comunes:• afraid / ashamed / conscious / proud / sure + OF• kind / nice / polite / impolite / rude + OF/TO• good / bad / talented + AT• different + FROM• interested + INI am interested in selling my car.He is very nice to me.James is proud of his beautiful garden.Peggy is afraid of dogs.

LOS MODIFICADORES DEL ADJETIVO: EL ADVERBIO

• ADVERBIO: parte invariable de la oración que califica al verbo, a un adjetivo o a otro adverbio.My brother is very tall / My children are quite pleasant /
