FUNDED

2012 Jan - 2014 Jan Site Investigator. 4 Repeat Tauopathy Neuroimaging Initiative. University of California, San Francisco. PI: Boxer, Adam. 94,647 CAD. [Grants]This study is a longitudinal biomarker trial to identify markers of disease progression in 4R tauopathies (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) and Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD). This study will enroll 40 patients with PSP, 40 patients with CBD, and a control group of 120 cognitively normal subjects, each of whom will be seen at timepoints 0, 6, and 12 months. At each visit, each participant will have a clinical evaluation, oculomotor testing, and an MRI scan. Blood and urine biomarkers will be collected annually (at 0 and 12 months) for all participants, and immortalized cell lines will be established from all subjects at baseline. Approximately 80% of subjects will undergo lumbar puncture (LP) at baseline and the final (12mo) visit for analysis of cerebrospinal fluid. The overall objectives of the study are to identify rates of change in biomarkers for 4R tauopathies by repeating measures at multiple timepoints, and to store data for future analyses.

2011 Jul 1 - 2012 Jun 30 Clinical Harmonization, Faculty Development, Faculty of Medicine, Dept of Medicine, Neurology, University of TorontoI was responsible for creating a clinical intake tool that will be used by the 5 academic memory clinics associated with the university of Toronto. This tool will enable a uniform data acquisition when conducting an interview with a patient with cognitive complaints. As well, there will be a standard neurological exam. The standardisation of approach to the patient with cognitive complaints will facilitate research amongst the cognitive behavioral groups at UofT. As well, this tool will help residents rotating in our clinics learn about the different cognitive domains and how to probe for changes in personality, cognition and social cognition. This tool will initially be rolled out to the UofT memory clinics but the plan is to have this used across Ontario and perhaps across Canada so that a nationwide registry of patients with cognitive could be established and queried for epidemiological research on health care necessities, outcomes etc.

2011 Jul 1 - 2012 Jun 30 Neuropsychological Harmonization, Faculty Development, Faculty of Medicine, Dept of Medicine, Neurology, University of TorontoI was involved in a committee to harmonize the neuropsychological assessment of patients presenting with cognitive complaints to the 5 academic memory clinics associated with the university of Toronto. The aim was to create a short battery that could be used by physicians and residents to assess all cognitive domains without having to wait for a full neuropsychological assessment. The tool will enable a uniform data acquisition. The standardisation of the battery will facilitate research amongst the cognitive behavioral groups at UofT. As well, this tool will help residents rotating in our clinics learn how to test the different cognitive domains and we use this information to help make a diagnosis and assess functional impact.

1. CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES

2011 Jul - present Harmonized Neuropsychological Assessment.I was involved in a committee to harmonize the neuropsychological assessment of patients presenting with cognitive complaints to the 5 academic memory clinics associated with the university of Toronto. There is a necessity for cognitive assessments for making an accurate diagnosis in neurodegenerative disease. This tool is easy to administer and provides domain specific information so as to not only help in the diagnosis of the specific neurodegenerative disease but also provide avenues for compensation. In addition to its clinical utility, it has great potential as a research tool since research questions can be posed of these large datasets.

2011 Jul - 2013 Jun Clinical Harmonization - Standardized Dementia assessment (History and Neurological exam).I was responsible for creating a clinical intake tool that will be used by the 5 academic memory clinics associated with the university of Toronto. This tool will enable a uniform data acquisition when conducting an interview with a patient with cognitive complaints. As well, there will be a standard neurological exam. The standardisation of approach to the patient with cognitive complaints will facilitate research amongst the cognitive behavioral groups at UofT. As well, this tool will help residents rotating in our clinics learn about the different cognitive domains and how to probe for changes in personality, cognition and social cognition.Standardized assessments have been recognized as a necessity for pooling data and being able to ask questions of large datasets.
