town on Oct. 20, 1944.“The first to volunteer were
the 23 fliers of the 201st AirFleet Imperial Nippon Naval AirForce under Capt. Sakae Ya-mamoto then stationed at Ma-balacat. The first kamikazegroup was called the ShinpuSpecial Attack Corps under Lt.
Yukio Seki. The corps was divid-ed into four units: The Shikisi-ma unit, Yamato unit, Asahiunit and the Yamazakura unit,”
the accounts said. According to the account of historian Daniel Dizon inscribedat the West Airfield, the Shik-ishima unit took off from theMabalacat East Airfield at 7:25a.m. on Oct. 25, 1944, and hitUS targets near Tacloban inLeyte about four hours later.
“Lt. Seki hit first and sank the carrier USS Saint Lo. Hismen also hit and heavily dam-aged the carriers USS Sanga-
mon, USS Suwanee, USS San-tee, USS White Plains, USS
Kalinin Bay and USS KitkunBay. Some kamikaze pilots fromCebu and Davao also joined inthis successful attack,” the in-scription said.
“Their initial success popu-larized kamikaze tactics to themajority of Japanese pilots inthe Philippines, Taiwan, Oki-nawa and Japan,” it said.
The last kamikaze missionfrom the Mabalacat airfield, theaccount said, took off at 4:45
p.m. on Jan. 6, 1945, and at-tacked the US landing armadaat Lingayen Gulf in Pangasinan.
The memorial does not glorify the kamikaze pilots, MabalacatMayor Marino Morales said.
The Mabalacat West Airfield, adjacent to the Clark firingrange, was built by Clark Devel-opment Corp. and inauguratedin 2004. It is said that Seki took off from this area on Oct. 21,1944.

MABALACAT CITY—However they are regarded—assuicide bombers or brave young pilots—the kamikazepilots of 70 years ago are now the link of this northernPampanga city to present-day Japanese and to peaceadvocates.
Memorials for the World WarII fighter pilots, collectively called kamikaze (divine wind),have become popular destina-tions for Japanese visitors toMabalacat.
“They come in busloads andthey stop by the airfields beforethey proceed to Baguio City,”Guy Hilbero, Mabalacat City tourism officer, said.
The Kamikaze East Airfield inCacutud village was built by thelocal government in 1998. On apedestal stands a life-size figureof a kamikaze pilot secured by aTori gate. The site lies below theMabalacat segment of theSubic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway.
Hilbero said the spot was the“central frontage” of the firstJapanese airfield during WorldWar II.
By 1944, the United States was retaking the Philippines af-
ter the Japanese invasion in1942. The Japanese held theformer Clark Air Base up tonearby Mabalacat, making thetown the birthplace of thekamikaze fleet.
The east and west airfieldsshare the same inscription: “Air-field where Kamikaze Special
Attack Corps aircraft first took off in World War II.”

LOVE.LIFE.
Why I’m single
By Gary Mondejar
“SIR, don’t you have adate this Valentine’s Day?It’s Saturday and here youa r e i n t h e o f f i c e , s t i l lworking.”
The security guard in our of-fice politely threw me that ques-tion because it was a special day and yet I came in to work. My usual response to this questionor any question alluding to my
singleness has always been, “notime for love.”But that day, I was able to
summon a completely differentresponse and, in hindsight, it
was pro babl y the most hone stanswer I could give: “I don’thave someone right now. Al-though I’ve been putting myself out there, no one seems to beright yet.”
For the past several months,I’ve been devoting all my energy to my career, having been desig-
nated last year as head of a sec-
tion in my department. It ’s a
very stressful and mentally tax-ing new responsibility, one in
whic h I find myse lf cons tant ly struggling to strike a balance be-tween work and “life.”
Most days, I end up workinguntil 10 p.m., even on week-ends. When I’m not working, allI want to do is sleep. So I’vebeen telling myself that, really, Ihave no time for love.
I’ve been single for almostfour years now. After my last
committed relationship, I feltthat I wanted to be single so Icould be free. Commitments andall the things it entailed suffo-cated me, so I resolved never tobe in a committed relationshipagain.
Which is why I had been inone friends-with-benefits setupafter another, telling myself it
was OK since I had been excruci-atingly honest with the womenabout what I wanted from thearrangement.
Not one of those no-strings-
attached arrangements, howev-er, lasted for more than a fewmonths. The culprit was alwaysthat one of the two parties in-
volved had breached a vital con-dition for the setup to work: Noemotional attachments and nosense of entitlement to the otherparty’s affairs.
The friends-with-benefits set-up, I now realize, won’t ever
work. I have to admit to myself that although I’m very capable
of compartmentalizing my emo-tional and sexual needs, the oth-er party probably won’t. There-fore, I will always end up hurt-ing people even if it wasn’t my intention to do so. And the real-ity of being able to hurt otherpeople hurts me—if that makesany sense—because I don’t ever
want to hurt anybody. So, at the start of this year, I
made a resolution never to al-low myself to hurt another girla g a i n , w h i c h m e a n s t h a t I
s h o u l d n e v e r e n t e r i n t o afriends-with-benefits setupagain.
Just recently, I met a girl atthe gym whom I really liked. Ia s k e d f o r h e r n u m b e r a n dfriended her on Facebook. I triedasking her out, twice, but all ef-forts were in vain.
That I was rejected wasn’tmuch of a surprise, after all. Iam fully aware of my penchanttowards l ik ing unattainable
women. What came as a surprise to
me was that I could see myself in a committed relationship. Thenotion that commitments suffo-cated me no longer held true.
Maybe I’ve become more ma-ture, whatever that means. But Isee now that if I want a real rela-tionship—one that’s founded ontrust and love—I must be willingto invest in it, to be vulnerable, togive everything I’ve got.
But the other side of this will-
ingness to share one’s self com-pletely must be to find someone
who’s worth it, someone who’sequally willing to be vulnerableand willing to give everythingshe’s got. And there’s the rub.Finding that someone.
That’s the reason I think why I’m still single. It ’s so rare tomeet someone who’s worth allthe risk, who’s worth everythingI’m willing to give, because Iknow what I can give—loving is
all about giving—and I knowthat I’ll do my best to be the best

man I can be.I k now my worth; I k nowhow beautiful I am in my own
weir d and impe rfec t way. Thisk nowledge of my value andstrength as a man compels menot to sell myself short, not tosettle, not to rush.
So if I like someone, I take my chances. The worst thing thatcan happen is to get reject-ed—that’s just a part of life Ihave to deal with. But more thantaking chances, I try to choosemy battles. If a girl I like isn’t in-terested, I let go. I’ve been com-fortable letting go because I’vealso learned to be comfortable
just being with myself.I’m comfortable in my own
skin and I’ve learned to acceptmy average look s, my high-pitched voice and all my imper-fections. I love myself and willkeep on doing so. I’m happy justbeing who I am and I won’t everallow myself to be with someone
who won’t accept me for who Iam.
Isn’t that the whole point of being in a relationship—to be
with someone who truly knows y o u a n d l o v e s y o u j u s t t h esame?
