Sixth Sunday of Easter
My dear friends in Jesus, as you have all heard and most likely concluded, at the heart of today's readings was
the proclamation of the Divine Presence of the Holy Spirit. During the Gospel Reading (Jn. 14:15-21) that
concerned the discourse on the departure of the Lord and His return in the Spirit, we heard Jesus say, "I will
not leave you orphaned." (Jn. 14:18) When Jesus spoke these words, did His disciples perceive the in-depth
meaning and richness that was found in this Divine promise?
For what purpose was the Holy Spirit sent into the world? In John 14:26, we learn that the Holy Spirit was
sent to teach us everything, and to remind us of all what Jesus has said to the Apostles. In John 15:26, we are
told that the Holy Spirit was sent to testify on behalf of Jesus. And in John 16:7-14, we learn that the purpose
of the coming of the Holy Spirit was to prove the world wrong about sin, righteousness and judgment: about
sin, because some did not believe in Jesus; about righteousness because Jesus was going to the Father and the
Apostles would no longer see Him; about judgment, because the ruler of the world had been condemned.
Jesus promised that He would not leave us as orphans. (Jn. 14:18) He would be coming to us. Some may ask,
"How can that be so?" Believing that the Holy Spirit has made His indwelling in us, where is Jesus? We
cannot see Him? The arrival of the Holy Spirit in the world included the arrival of Jesus and the Father
because of their shared life in the Holy Trinity. For the Father is in Jesus and Jesus is in the Father. (Jn. 14:20)
Today's First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 8:5-8, 14-17) was an historical recount of the event surrounding the giving of the gift
of the Holy Spirit to the Samaritans. Accepting Jesus as the promised Messiah, many of the Samaritans received the Holy Spirit in their lives
through the laying of the hands of Peter and John.
This very special event can be viewed as the second or Samaritan Pentecost. The first Pentecost is documented in (Acts 2:1-4) when the Jews
received the Holy Spirit. A third Pentecost took place when the Gentiles heard the good news and received the Holy Spirit. (Acts 10:44) Similar
to this, every year a Pentecost takes place on a smaller scale in most dioceses of the world, when the baptized faithful and the new converts,
receive the Holy Spirit at the moment of their confirmation in the Catholic Church. Filled with the Holy Spirit, these members of the Church no
longer need to feel alone.
Jesus promised that He would not leave us orphaned. As a sign of His infinite love for each and everyone of us, He has opened the door to our
adoption as children. And because we are children, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" So we are no
longer a slave but a child, and if a child, then also an heir, through God. (Gal. 4:6) May the grace of God always be with you all.
Sexto Domingo de Pascua Mis queridos amigos en Jesús, como todos ustedes han oído y muy probablemente concluido, el centro
de las lecturas de hoy fue el anuncio de la presencia divina del Espíritu Santo. Durante la lectura del
Evangelio (Jn. 14:15-21) que trata del discurso sobre la partida del Señor y Su regreso en el Espíritu,
oímos a Jesús decir: "No los dejaré huérfanos." (. Jn 14:18) Cuando Jesús dijo estas palabras,
percibieron sus discípulos el significado en profundidad y riqueza que se halló en esta promesa divina?
¿Con qué propósito fue el Espíritu Santo enviado al mundo? En Juan 14:26, vemos que el Espíritu Santo
fue enviado para enseñarnos todo y recordarnos todo lo que Jesús había dicho a los apóstoles. En Juan
15:26, se nos dice que el Espíritu Santo fue enviado a dar testimonio en nombre de Jesús. Y en Juan
16:7-14, vemos que el propósito de la venida del Espíritu Santo era acusar al mundo de pecado, justicia
y juicio: de pecado, porque algunos no creyeron en Jesús; de justicia, porque Jesús iba al Padre y los
Apóstoles ya no lo vería; de juicio, porque el príncipe de este mundo había sido condenado.
Jesús prometió que no nos dejaría huérfanos. (Jn. 14:18) Él iba a venir a nosotros. Algunos pueden preguntarse, "¿Cómo puede ser así?" Creer
que el Espíritu Santo ha hecho su morada en nosotros, ¿dónde está Jesús? No podemos verlo? La llegada del Espíritu Santo en el mundo incluye
la llegada de Jesús y el Padre a causa de su vida en común en la Santa Trinidad. Porque el Padre está en Jesús y Jesús está en el Padre. (. Jn
14:20)
La Primera Lectura de hoy de los Hechos de los Apóstoles (Hechos 8: 5-8, 14-17) fue un recuento histórico del evento en torno a la entrega del
don del Espíritu Santo a los Samaritanos. Aceptando a Jesús como el Mesías prometido, muchos de los samaritanos recibieron el Espíritu Santo
en sus vidas a través de la imposición de manos de Pedro y Juan.
Este evento muy especial se puede ver como el Pentecostés Samaritano. El primer Pentecostés se documenta en (Hechos 2:1-4), cuando los
Judíos recibieron el Espíritu Santo. Un tercer Pentecostés tuvo lugar cuando los gentiles oyeron las buenas nuevas y recibieron el Espíritu Santo
(Hechos 10:44). De manera similar a esto, todos los años un Pentecostés tiene lugar en una escala más pequeña en la mayoría de las diócesis del
mundo, cuando los bautizados fieles y los nuevos convertidos reciben el Espíritu Santo en el momento de su confirmación en la Iglesia Católica.
Llenos del Espíritu Santo, estos miembros de la Iglesia ya no tienen que sentirse solos.
Jesús prometió que no nos dejaría huérfanos. Como una señal de su amor infinito por todos y cada uno de nosotros, Él ha abierto la puerta a
nuestra adopción como hijos. Y porque somos hijos, Dios ha enviado el Espíritu de su Hijo a nuestros corazones, clamando: "¡Abba, Padre!" Así
que ya no somos esclavos, sino hijos; y si hijos, también herederos por voluntad de Dios. (Ga. 4:6) Que la gracia de Dios siempre esté con todos
ustedes.
