Objetivos generales de la Propuesta para la Reestructuración de Espacios y Servicios (2007)

• Reubicar al personal en base a sus áreas de especialidad y experiencias laborales previas.

• Completar la plantilla de Bibliotecarios en las áreas de mayor demanda.

• Atender las peticiones del estudiantado referentes al horario extendido.

• Replantear la naturaleza y función de las colecciones actuales de la Biblioteca.

• Proveer facilidades adecuadas para los empleados que laboran en las diversas áreas.

• Proveer espacios adecuados para albergar las colecciones.

Objetivos generales de la Propuesta para la Reestructuración de Espacios y Servicios (2007)

• Facilitar al investigador la tarea de localizar la información que necesita.

• Optimizar la gestión bibliotecaria a favor de los servicios otorgados a los usuarios.

• Recomendar la creación de nuevos espacios y/o servicios.• Recuperar espacios físicos que han sido mal aprovechados.• Diversificar y ampliar los servicios que la Biblioteca

ofrece.• Optimizar el uso del espacio físico remodelado,

redistribuyendo la actual planta física de la Biblioteca.

Justificación

• Según el documento Standards for Libraries in Higher Education de la ACRL (2004), “The library facility and its branches should be well planned, it should provide secure and adequate space, conducive to study and research with suitable environmental conditions for its services, personnel resources and collections. The library’s equipment should be adequate and functional”.

Alternativas propuestas en el 2007

• Ampliar el espacio para el crecimiento de la Sala José Luis González, Colección Puertorriqueña

• Creación de un espacio para la proyección de Recursos Audiovisuales y un espacio destinado a la preservación y conservación de recursos.

• Integrar los servicios de investigación a un mismo espacio.

• Inicia el proceso de vender la idea.• Reuniones con los decanos, rector, directora

de planificación y bibliotecarios.• Se deja en pausa el proyecto para iniciar el

autoestudio de ACRL.

Visita de reconocimiento Association for College and Research Libraries (ACRL)

• Esta visita de reconocimiento se da en el año 2008.

• Se realizó un autoestudio en consideración a los12 estándares de ACRL.

• Se presenta a los evaluadores la Propuesta para la Reestructuración de Espacios y Servicios.

• Los evaluadores nos hablan por primera vez de los “learning commons”.

¿Qué es un learning commons?

• “Un learning commons es un espacio dinámico que se encuentra a menudo físicamente en la biblioteca y que promueve ambientes de aprendizaje colaborativo. Desde este espacio se provee asistencia a estudiantes que tienen alguna necesidad de información o investigación” (York University, 2008).

• Por lo regular combina espacios de estudio grupal e individual, con servicios de referencia profunda e instrucción ofrecida por personal bibliotecario o técnico. Los elementos más importantes de estos centros de ambientes de aprendizaje colaborativo son los servicios de investigación, redacción, y uso de tecnologías. El fin es pues proveer a los estudiantes las herramientas necesarias para aprender y ser más exitosos.

Information Commons

“Information commons have drawn students by offering environments that address their needs, bringing together technology, content, and services in a physical space that results in an environment different from that of a typical library”(Lippincot, 2006).

“Perhaps most importantly, the commons invites students to devise their own approaches to their work and to transfer what they learn in one course to the work they do for another. A well-equipped learning commons says to a student, -Here you have tools, room to collaborate, equipment, advice, research options, and access to expert information. Now it is up to you to build something worthwhile: a paper, a presentation, an education-” (‘7 Things you should know’, 2011).

Autoestudio ACRL (Año 2008)• Services- Areas for Improvement

“At the Library in Cayey these suggested actions will have great impact on the student population. It is very important that attention be paid to redesigning services and spaces within which those services take place as things change in the external environment. There has been significant change in pedagogy and methods of engaging students since the 1980’s when the current library building was created. This change has caused a greater requirement for group learning and group study and projects. The Library is a natural location for such learning and activity and librarians should begin thinking about how they can meet such a need as it increases. The issue of services is difficult to separate from the issues of facilities which are addressed later in this report…” (ACRL Report, 2008, p.3).

Recomendaciones evaluadores ACRL

• “The current reference area is not appropriate for a number of reasons: not visible enough, not spacious enough being the main reasons. The reference point should be combined with current periodicals and placed in the Sala Familia. The Sala Familia collection and service should be moved to another space. That program does not need the kind of visibility that Library departments do – especially those where the mission is to service the students.”

• “A Learning Commons should be placed in a visible place. Learning Commons are spaces where technology, information, and expert assistance come together. Good examples of effective Learning Commons can be found at: Emory University (Atlanta, GA), Brooklyn College (Brooklyn, NY), and Loyola University Cudahy Library (Chicago, IL). At Loyola an entire building was dedicated as a Learning Commons with each floor having a different level of noise acceptance” (ACRL Report, 2008, p.3).

Recomendaciones evaluadores ACRL

• “Students we spoke with were generally happy with Library hours – with the exception of the large space with the most computers which closes at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. This is a matter of experimentation and creativity to find the best possible solution. Also there should be focus groups conducted to further explore why students believe they need longer hours and what they would be doing during those hours. While generally happy with hours of access, the single most commonly requested enhancement of service we heard from the students was expansion of hours (see the Access Standard in this report).”

• “One of the strongest complaints students had about the library is the noise level around them when they are trying to study in the library. Perhaps in reconfiguring space, collections, services, and user space, this complaint might be resolved. Reorganizing where things are may allow the library to create quieter spaces understanding that the 21st century library is increasingly interactive and a location for conversation rather than pure silence. Complaints related to other students as well as library staff” (ACRL Report, 2008, p.4).

Recomendaciones evaluadores ACRL• “ The Library should begin to plan for more group study space as this trend in teaching

and learning is increasing world-wide. Professors are assigning more and more team assignments where students need to accomplish work together. This will be a challenge to all libraries and their facilities in the future”(ACRL Report, 2008, p.8).

• “Establish a learning or information commons in the library. Information/learning commons are areas that have both computing resources, information resources, access to librarians, and work spaces in an integrated environment ”(ACRL Report, 2008, p.8).

• “Take advantage of the top floor open space to make it the most attractive space possible. It is a space so attractive that would be the envy of library directors and campus administrators everywhere. However, we believe the current furnishing and their arrangement do not bring out the potential of the space. Study carrels are lined up along the perimeter, squandering the spectacular view. Though not mentioned in the self-study, we noticed evidence of rain water coming into the area. This should be addressed before it becomes an even more costly project ”(ACRL Report, 2008, p.8).

Recomendaciones evaluadores ACRL• “An AV projection space is needed and perhaps building

and service redesign will allow for such a space”(ACRL Report, 2008, p.9).

• “Furnishings should be replaced and there should be a five-ten year plan for cyclical restoration or replacement of furniture. Ideas for library furniture and their arrangements are available at Steelcase.com” (ACRL Report, 2008, p.9).

Acciones tomadas

1. Se discutió con la administración y el personal bibliotecario las recomendaciones de los evaluadores.

2. Se inició una fase de estudio y evaluación sobre el concepto de “learning commons”y que implicaciones tendría para la Biblioteca.

3. Se diseño una nueva propuesta para la restructuración de espacios y servicios.

4. Se discutió la propuesta con la administración Universitaria.5. Se inició el proceso de cotizar y evaluar los costos

relacionados al proyecto.6. Se sometió una nueva propuesta con un estimado de los

costos relacionados.7. Se inició el proceso de búsqueda de fondos.

Acciones tomadas8. Se inició el proceso de planificación con la Oficina de Planificación

y Avalúo Institucional.9. Se hicieron ajustes en el presupuesto de la Biblioteca para intentar

alolegar fondos relacionados con la planificación del proyecto (contratación de un arquitecto).

10. Se presentó el proyecto a diversos grupos de la Comunidad Universitaria.

11. Se contrató al Arquitecto Carlos Ferrán.12. Se hicieron incontables reuniones con el arquitecto, el equipo de

trabajo y la Oficina de Planificación.13. Se aprobaron los planos finales14. Se inició un arduo proceso de búsqueda de fondos externos por la

Oficina de Recursos Externos del Recinto.15. Se pone en pausa el proyecto…..
