Radio WavesRadio Waves are a form of electromagnetic radiation that carries information such as audio and video with it.

Radio waves are used in almost everything these days to transmit information to and from different devices and locations.

To receive a radio signal the receiver must be tuned in to the correct frequency.

The way radio signals work is on one end the radio signal must be sent from a “transmitter” at a certain frequency, you must use a frequency different to someone else’s frequency so that the signals do not interchange and cause interference.

Once the signal is in the air the “receiver” must be tuned into the correct frequency to pick up that signal, once the signal has been picked up the receiver will then demodulate and collect the information from the signal and send it to the amplifier to convert it into an actual sound wave that we can hear and understand.

FrequenciesWhen a radio wave is transmitted it must be on a different frequency to other radio stations.

We use different frequencies because it helps the receiver find the correct signal the user is searching for and so that the signals do not interfere with one another.

There are two main types of frequencies, AM and FM.

AM (Amplitude Modulation) is the most basic form of radio transmission and is mostly used for local radio stations as AM radio does not have the ability to transmit a signal nationwide.

FM (Frequency Modulation) is the newer form of radio transmission and features higher sound quality than AM and it can travel much further, because of this FM radio is used for nationwide broadcasts rather than local broadcasts.

Wave Technology

Radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation.Radio waves travel at the speed of light.Radio waves are can have frequencies from 3kHz all the way till 300GHz so there is almost near endless about off frequencies you can transmit from.

Uses of RadioRadio is used in almost every device available these days.

Now the most common use of radio is to transmit data between mobile phones.

Wi-Fi internet also uses radio waves for wireless internet access.

Radio is also used as entertainment for listening to shows or music.

Radio technology is also how soldiers in the army communicate between each other and their commanders.

Importance of RadioRadio waves were first discovered by James Clerk Maxwell in 1865 and was fully demonstrated by Heinrich Hertz in 1887.

Radio waves were an amazing discovery as it lead to inventions that helped us overcome distance and allowed information to be sent and received far more quickly than ever before.

Almost everything these days uses radio technology, GPS navigation, mobile phones, TV, Internet, telephones etc.

Without radio many of todays devices and products would be rendered useless.
