Astrónomo francés conocido sobre todo por haber recopilado el primer catálogo de nebulosas y cúmulos estelares y por haberse dedicado sistemáticamente a la búsqueda de nebulosas y de cometas, descubriendo unos 13.
Descubrió en 1.759 el cometa de Halley y al año siguiente un nuevo cometa, al que se le dio su nombre

Galileo creyó haber descubierto Neptuno en 1.642, pero después se supo que era una estrella cerca de Jupiter.Urbain Leverrier y Couch Adams fueron matemáticos que en 1.846 y 1,843 hicieron los cálculos necesarios para saber donde se encontraba Neptuno.

Fue matemático, físico y astrónomo.
Desde pequeño fabricaba sus propios telescopios, llegando a construir uno de 37 metros que tuvo que apoyar en unos postes.
Con este telescopio, en 1.655,consiguió ver por primera vez el anillo que rodea Saturno y su satélite Titán.

Su aportación más importante fue la delimitación de las constelaciones (las fijó en las 88 actuales) en 1.930.
