sanahuja&partners is an archi-tecture studio created by Jaime Sanahuja, in the city of Castellon, in the late 80’s. From the beginning, the studio has based its projects on the criteria of quality, inno-vation and creativity.

Working at the firm’s current headquarters in Valencia, Castellon and Ibiza, the stu-dio’s multidisciplinary team approaches its projects under the following premises: careful consideration given to the location of the project; functionality of the spaces; spatial fluidity, and maximum exploitation of natural light as the main sustainability factor. Consequently, the end result is one of simplicity and clarity, in keeping with the values of the Mediterranean culture, which is the main basis of the design phi-losophy at the studio.

The studio always applies a rigorous work methodology, and all its projects include: high quality standards in its processes; network communication through its own intranet system set by the consulting firm Qmt Consulting, and a 3-D design produc-tion system (BIM, Building Information Modelling). The studio also has the neces-sary qualified technical team to conduct complete Project Management regarding the execution and development of the pro-jects, under a single command and with continuous reporting to the client.

sanahuja&partners es un estudio de arquitectura fundado por Jaime Sana-huja en la ciudad de Castellón a finales de los años 80, que desde sus inicios ha ba-sado sus proyectos en criterios de calidad, innovación y creatividad.

El equipo multidisciplinar del estudio, ra-dicado en sus actuales sedes de Valencia, Castellón e Ibiza, enfoca sus proyectos bajo las siguientes premisas: atención a la ubicación del proyecto, funcionalidad de los espacios, fluidez espacial y máximo aprovechamiento de la luz natural como primer principio rector de sostenibilidad, consiguiendo así un resultado final de sencillez y claridad acorde con los valores de la cultura mediterránea, base principal de la filosofía proyectual del estudio.

Bajo una rigurosa metodología de trabajo, todos sus proyectos incluyen: calidad de los procesos (posee el certificado de la Norma ISO 9001:2008 por la empresa TÜV Rheinland Ibérica Inspection), comunica-ción en red a través de una intranet propia implantada por la consultoría Qmt Consul-ting, así como sistema de producción de diseño de proyectos en 3D (BIM – Building Information Modelling-). Además, el estu-dio posee el equipo técnico cualificado necesario para un completo Project Ma-nagement en la ejecución y desarrollo de los Proyectos, bajo un mando único y un reporte continuo al cliente.

ENThis is an intervention project in the hi-ghest part of the historical downtown of San Mateo. The project involved refurbi-shing several adjacent houses that were in ruins, recovering the existing medieval arches, and developing a complex pro-gram that includes the living quarters as well as representation and exhibition spa-ces for the owner’s collection of antiques.

The intervention proposal was based on restoring a maximum of architectural ele-ments of interest in the building (stairs, arcades, walls, roofing and façades), and on combining those elements with a con-temporary architecture design.

At the same time, a large, internal, three-story-high empty space was projected, where traffic converges, and where all the spaces and levels are connected, lending great spatial fluidity to the overall struc-ture.

Moreover, the materials used also help to achieve the architectural harmony, so that the exposed stone, the plaster and the wood become the guiding thread of the project’s architectural proposal.

Proyecto de intervención en la parte más alta del núcleo histórico de San Mateo consistente en la rehabilitación de varias viviendas contiguas en avanzado estado de ruina, recuperando los arcos medieva-les existentes y con un complejo programa de vivienda y espacios de representación y exposición de la colección de antigüeda-des del propietario.

La propuesta de intervención se basa en la máxima recuperación de los elementos arquitectónicos de interés del edificio: escaleras, arcadas, muros, cubierta y fa-chadas, y en el intento de conjugar estos elementos con una arquitectura de carác-ter contemporáneo.

Interiormente se proyecta un gran espacio vacío de triple altura, alrededor del cual convergen las circulaciones, conectando todos los espacios y niveles y dotando así al conjunto de gran fluidez espacial.

También los materiales empleados ayu-dan a esta armonía arquitectónica. Así, la piedra vista, los revocos en blanco y las maderas, se convierten en hilo conductor de la propuesta arquitectónica.

ENThe project addresses the refurbishment of the hotel building located in an old resi-dence and the remodelling of the adjacent boarding facility.

The construction of a spa building lend quality and refinement to the complex. It is intended for the enjoyment of hotel guests and for day-customers. It will become the standard of quality in the region in terms of health and wellness with a extremely suitable location: the proximity of the Ber-gantes River, whose water can be used to meet sustainability and water use criteria.

The spa building is semi-buried, making it almost unnoticeable. Only a series of well oriented skylights emerge above ground. The spa services are organized around the main horizontal circulation axis, whose gives access to the garden. The common areas are located on the ground floor of the former Giner residence. In order to free up this level, the lobby and the re-ception desk of the hotel and spa are in the space between the two buildings. This one, the medical consulting room and the spa dressing rooms are placed next to the vertical communication shaft. Once the client crosses the check point, the diffe-rent services begin to appear, and all of them are placed around the rest area. The skylights situated in the rest area provi-de visual openings to the exterior and to the garden, while giving natural light to the interior. The aesthetic treatment and massage areas are organized around a courtyard, and the multipurpose room is located in the garden’s most quiet and secluded corner.

Se trata de la reforma del edificio hotelero y la reconversión del albergue adyacente en hotel para ampliar y mejorar la oferta hotelera existente en la antigua colonia industrial de la Fábrica Giner.

El edificio de spa será el elemento de atracción de visitantes. Así, las nuevas instalaciones estarán destinadas tanto a los huéspedes como a los clientes de día. Su situación es idónea por la presencia cercana del río Bergantes, aprovechado para satisfacer criterios de sostenibilidad y aprovechamiento de agua.

El nuevo edificio de spa se plantea se-mi-enterrado y apenas perceptible, es-cepto por una serie de lucernarios estra-tégicamente orientados. El programa se organiza a los lados del eje de circulación horizontal, que da acceso al jardín. Para li-berar la planta baja de la antigua Residen-cia Giner para zonas comunes del Hotel, se propone acabar de ocupar el espacio de acceso entre edificios ubicando el vestíbu-lo y la recepción general. Esta, la consulta medica y vestuarios del spa se sitúan jun-to a las comunicaciones verticales. Atra-vesado el punto de control, aparecen las piezas singulares del programa (piscina de hidro-masaje, jacuzzis, baño turco...), dis-puestas alrededor de la zona de descanso. Es aquí donde los lucernarios adquieren relevancia, facilitando las visuales hacia el exterior y la vegetación al mismo tiem-po que iluminan el interior. El área de es-tética, de masajes y el gimnasio vuelcan a un patio y la sala polivalente se orienta hacia la esquina más alejada y tranquila del jardín.

ES ENThis is the remodeling, refurbishing and enhancement project of the Osset Pala-ce, located in Forcall, a small village near Morella, in the interior of the Castellón Province (Region of Valencia, Spain).

This palace, built in the late 16th to ear-ly 17th centuries, had already undergone a nearly complete interior renovation in 1993 in order to convert it into a hotel for rural tourism.

It was decided to create an establishment of the so-called hotels with a personal touch, which in itself will constitute a high quality tourist attraction.

The architectural project has sought to bring out the palace’s full potential and to make the building itself into a tourist des-tination. The rooms have been made more spacious –the former 20 rooms are now 16, three of them junior suites. All of them are different and their decoration reflects the four seasons.

Proyecto de remodelación, rehabilitación y puesta en valor del Palau dels Ossets de Forcall, Palacio construido a finales del siglo XVI y principios del siglo XVII.

Con la intervención se ha decidido apostar por la creación de un establecimiento de los denominados “Hoteles con Encanto”, que por si mismo constituya un atractivo turístico de calidad.

El proyecto de intervención arquitectónica ha buscado sacar todo el potencial de este palacio y lograr que el edificio sea un des-tino en sí mismo.

Desde el punto de vista de los materiales utilizados, se ha querido ser conservador con la estética del palacio renacentista, utilizando materiales nobles como la ma-dera de iroko en las carpinterías exterio-res, madera de roble en el suelo de las habitaciones y algunas zonas comunes, y mármol travertino en el restaurante y zona de acceso.

ENThe project addresses refurbishing an old school to transform it into the town’s new civic center.

Due to its limited budget, we looked for an austere intervention which includes the maintenance of the enveloping of the building. We decided to preserve the gaps on the façade, because they are a tool of modulation and rhythm. Moreover, thanks to these gaps and the white walls, a good light-treatment of the inside is reached. The building has three floors, where the programme is organized. It is geared to the City Hall´s needs: conference hall, exhibition area, classrooms, studios, li-brary...

There are two main aspects which have to be standed out. Firstly, the recovery of the original wooden roof which is used to mo-dulate the spaces below it. The other one is the idea of achieving a very dynamic space for the library. A loft is built with the aim of extend its use.

Double floors and large, open spaces have created a polyvalent center for multiple purposes space, and the use of materials such as concrete or wood lend the buil-ding a contemporary personality, making it into an iconic point and a reference for the town.

Se trata de la rehabilitación de un antiguo grupo escolar para transformarlo en el nuevo centro cívico del municipio.

Por su presupuesto limitado, la interven-ción, austera, mantiene la envolvente del edificio y enfatiza el diseño interior. Se decidió mantener los huecos de fachada, que aportan un ritmo y una modulación organizadora del espacio interior. Ade-más, gracias a estos ventanales y al color blanco del interior, se consigue un buen tratamiento lumínico de las estancias, re-partidas en tres plantas y con un programa ajustado a las necesidades del Consisto-rio: salón de conferencias, zona expositi-va, aulas, talleres, biblioteca…

Dos son los aspectos de la intervención que cabe destacar. El primero es la re-cuperación de la cubierta original de ma-dera, que se ha tratado como elemento modulador del espacio interior. El otro es la intención de conseguir un espacio muy dinámico en la zona de la biblioteca, con un altillo que amplía su uso.

Dobles alturas y grandes espacios diá-fanos han conseguido crear un centro polivalente de múltiples usos. El empleo de materiales contrastados, como el hor-migón o la madera, aportan al edificio un carácter contemporáneo que lo encumbra como referente para la ciudad.

EN“Casa Abadia del Maestrat” Hotel is a new 6-room boutique hotel, restaurant and bar contained in the old Abadia Hou-se, in the heart of the mountains of Caste-llón. The hotel is located in the main squa-re of the village, attached to the church.

Addressing the provision of an extension in the form of a building, the project also included the restoration and refurbish-ment of the existing building for its new use as a hotel.

The aim of the project was to preserve its native Maestrat region architecture, along with its small-town character, and to create a unique atmosphere. The project maintains the local architectural features, like the typical stone walls and wood, but introducing new materials like glass, con-crete and corten steel—new materials for new uses, for the new life of the existing building.

There is a restaurant, a lobby and a rea-ding room on the ground floor, six rooms located on the first and second floors, and a small spa on the third floor. There is also a terrace with a breathtaking view of the region.

Se trata de un proyecto para un hotel rural de seis habitaciones, spa y restaurante, situado en un entorno de montaña en el interior de Castellón. Se ubica en la an-tigua Casa Abadía, que se adecúa a los nuevos usos pero manteniendo su facha-da de piedra. Quedan en planta baja las zonas de recepción, lectura y restaurante, mientras que las plantas primera y segun-da cuentan con tres habitaciones cada una. En la planta bajo cubierta se ubica el spa, con unas magníficas vistas de toda la zona y del campanario.

Se busca una distribución sencilla de acuerdo con el programa funcional plan-teado. De las seis habitaciones, dos de ellas son tipo suite y otra está adaptada para minusválidos.

El inicio del proyecto es la premisa del respeto a la arquitectura del lugar, ya que se encuentra ubicado junto a la Iglesia. Por ello, se emplean materiales como la piedra vista, el acero corten, la madera, el vidrio y el hormigón, en busca de un con-junto armónico. El interiorismo se plantea como complemento esencial de la parte arquitectónica, utilizando elementos acor-des a su carácter rural.

ES ENThis is a former palace, built in 1883 by the architect Paul Dechard. It consists of two blocks enclosing a small service court in the back. Its entrance is on Ave-nue Marceau, which is located within the so-called Parisian “Golden Triangle”.

The building already works as a library, but it requires an urgent intervention that will allow it to keep fulfilling its function and meet the upgrades in security, acces-sibility and functionality which are requi-red nowadays.

The aim of our refurbishment project is to improve its function as a library and to meet the needs now required for this type of facility, while respecting as much as possible the existing architectural typolo-gy, and maintaining its volumetric, spatial, morphological and artistic characteristics. The goal is also to turn this library into the cultural place of reference in the city of Paris for the Spanish language and for the other official languages of Spain.

El proyecto consiste en la Reforma y Ade-cuación Funcional del Edificio sede de la Biblioteca Octavio Paz, poniendo al día esta importante infraestructura cultural. Se trata de un antiguo palacete cons-truido en el año 1.883, formado por dos bloques que encierran un pequeño patio de servicio.

El edificio, que actualmente ya funciona como biblioteca, precisa de una urgente intervención con las condiciones de se-guridad, accesibilidad y funcionalidad que actualmente se demandan.

Nuestro proyecto de rehabilitación pre-tende mejorar su funcionamiento como biblioteca, respetando al máximo posible la tipología arquitectónica y posibilitando cubrir las necesidades que requiere este tipo de uso. Se conservan las característi-cas volumétricas, espaciales morfológicas y artísticas del inmueble. El objetivo es también el transformar la biblioteca en un lugar de referencia para la ciudad de París para el castellano y las demás lenguas cooficiales de España.

ENIt´s a contemporary architecture in a rural Mediterranean atmosphere. The project raises the renovation of a country house group. One of the start points and promo-ter’s main requirement was to keep the country house’s original esthetics, which had an important sentimental value for him.

The group houses 4 buildings: main hou-sing, guest housing, landlords’ housing and an area of common spaces (also known as choco) with living-dining room, rest area and barbecue. The main house was the most damaged building, and the-refore, where a higher intervention had to be carried out. The aim has been to try to produce a project which kept that rural nature, but at the same time that was re-cognized as a contemporary architecture action. All that has been achieved through the use of double heights, with bid win-dow panes that flood the rooms with light, and the use of materials such as steel, concrete and stone.

The developed program is a typical high standing house. The complex is articula-ted through the outside spaces, which have also been designed with a specific project, with coherence to the group.

Se trata de una Arquitectura contemporá-nea en un entorno rural mediterráneo. El proyecto aborda la rehabilitación de una agrupación de masías (masada). Uno de los condicionantes de partida y exigencia principal del propietario era mantener la estética original de la masada, de impor-tante valor sentimental para éste.

El conjunto alberga 4 edificios: vivienda principal, vivienda de invitados, vivienda para caseros y un área de espacios comu-nes con salón-comedor, zona de descanso y barbacoa. La vivienda principal era el edificio más deteriorado, y por tanto, en la que se ha realizado un mayor grado de intervención. Se ha tratado de realizar un proyecto que conservara ese carácter ru-ral, pero que a la vez se reconociera como una actuación de arquitectura contempo-ránea. Todo ello se ha logrado mediante la utilización de dobles alturas, con grandes acristalamientos que inundan de luz las estancias y el uso de materiales como el acero, el hormigón o la piedra.

Los distintos edificios se articulan a través de los espacios exteriores, de los que se ha realizado un proyecto específico, con el fin de otorgar al conjunto de la coherencia proyectual necesaria.
