NATIONAL MERIT The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual competition for college undergraduate

awards in which secondary school students who rank at the top of the academic ability scale

are identified and publicly honored. Students enter these competitions by taking the Preliminary

Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test at a designated time during

the high school curriculum. Students ranking among the top 34,000 in the nation are designated

“Commended Scholars” by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Of those 34,000, only

about 16,000 of them were named “Semifinalists.” Semifinalists are eligible to continue in the

competition for about 7,600 Merit Scholarship awards.

WASHINGTON POST 2016 Riverside Brookfield High School has made the Washington Post 2016 list of America's Most

Challenging High Schools. This year RB was ranked 15th out of 71 ranked Illinois schools and 8th

when excluding private and selective enrollment schools. RB was also ranked 524th out of 2,333

national schools that made the list. This ranking is based on 2015 data. RB was also ranked in US

News and World Report's list of 2016 Best High Schools. This year RB was ranked 24th out of 94

ranked Illinois schools and 15th when excluding private and selective enrollment schools. RB was

also ranked 661st out of 2,673 national schools that made the list. This ranking is based on 2014

data.

These national rankings affirm our philosophy at Riverside Brookfield High School: By establishing

high expectations for all students and allowing open access to a rigorous curriculum taught by outstanding teachers, students can reach their full potential. Visit the Washington Post and US News

and Word Report websites for additional information on the rankings.

STUDENT OF THE QUARTER

RBHS is a place where we strive for “Excellence and Ethics in all Bulldogs Do!” Therefore, we

continued with our student recognition program this year to celebrate the good choices our

students make, from the small daily courtesies to the astonishing, large contributions. It is

important to stop and recognize these positive actions to show our appreciation and to inspire

others to follow suit. In order to become a Student of the Quarter, each student had to earn the

admiration of the teachers from a specific department by excelling in two areas: academics

and character. The ceremonies recognized students displaying the Character Counts! Pillars of

Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Trustworthiness, Caring and Citizenship. Each quarter, we honored 10 students representing each academic department, in addition to

Student Building Leaders, who exemplify our values of "Excellence and Ethics in all Bulldogs Do!"

These students were nominated by faculty for excelling in two areas: academics and

character. The following students were recognized during this school year:

WEST 40 SCOTY (SCHOOL CITIZEN OF THE YEAR) RECIPIENT

Samantha Miezio, a junior (Class of 2017) at RB, was

recognized by the West 40 Intermediate Service Center as a recipient of the

2016 SCOTY (School Citizen of the Year) Award. Samantha was recognized for her steadfast

commitment to her own academic success as well as her positive contributions to her school

community through her leadership in and out of the classroom.

West 40 Intermediate Educational Service Center #2 annually recognized students who have

been chosen by their schools as “good citizens and models for others to emulate. “Grades and

activities are important considerations, but only a small part of the selection process. RBHS uses

school and community volunteer service as criteria for selection. In addition, the student must

also hold a current leadership role in the school.

There were also a couple of contests this year. The volunteers at the Riverside Swim Club site

were the winners of the most trash collected. They picked up 26 bags of trash!

periods. The lunch period with the highest overall attendance for a

given week will earn rewards such as music, lunch on the lawn,

and/or a raffle drawing for additional prizes. An Attendance

Challenge mural representing attendance percentages was

painted in the Cafeteria by our 5th period art students. It was

presented to lunch periods last month.

ENGAGEMENT WALL / LUNCH BUZZ T.V.

The Office of Student Affairs welcomed Lunch Buzz TV to the Cafeteria. The Lunch Buzz TV is

are excited to provide another avenue in which students can see the great things RB has to

offer!

student body regarding on time arrival to school and to class. We continue to encourage

students to make efficient use of their 5-minute passing period as well as with their efforts to

arrive to school on time. For the remainder of this school year, the Deans' Office will continue to

scan the I.D. cards of tardy students and will notify parents and guardians through an

THE DAY OF SILENCE

Riverside Brookfield High School participated in the Day of Silence on Friday, April 15, 2016.

The Day of Silence is a national day of action in which students across the country vow to take

a form of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in

schools. The Day of Silence brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying, and

harassment, and effective responses. The goal of the Day of Silence is to make schools safer for

all students, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.

The day is a positive educational experience, and it is an opportunity for RB students to

work toward improving school climate for all of our students. For information

visit www.dayofsilence.org.

STUDENTS CREATE ARTFUL FENCE DESIGN IN RIVERSIDE

Art students at Riverside Brookfield High School transform the fence behind the Riverside Arts

Center.

Article written in the June 14, 2016 Suburban Life newspaper:

RIVERSIDE – The Riverside Arts Center shares its enthusiasm over what a little paint, creativity and

ambition can produce, all thanks to a challenge posed to Suzanne Zimmerman, an art teacher

at Riverside Brookfield High School.

Kim Piotrowski, RAC board member and past president, said in a news release that she recently

asked Zimmerman to invite her students to make a new mural promoting the Riverside Arts

Center.

"We have a back fence facing the Metra train and realize this is prime ad space for our arts

center," Piotrowski said, noting the students came up with over 20 designs, which the RAC Board

of Directors narrowed down to two. "We then asked Suzanne and her students to combine the

designs for our mural. We couldn't be more pleased with the results."

The artists are involved in RB Drawing + Painting classes, and Art Club.

citizens. This year, Ms. Czajka is piloting the Service Learning in an AP Computer

Science course. To prepare for this new aspect of the course, Sandy traveled to Africa this

summer to observe a school built by Free the Children. She learned more about the

organization and how it benefits the children of Africa. Teachers from AP Spanish Language
