Estilo indirecto
Dora said: “I am hungry.”
“I am hungry”, Dora said.
ESTILO DIRECTO: forma de hablar en la que el hablante reproduce exactamente las mismas palabras que dijo una tercera persona.
Fíjate: Cuando se cita las palabras de otra persona, se usa “…”. No son nuestras propias palabras sino las de otra persona.

Compara:1.Ted says: “I live here.”2.Ted says that he lives there.3.They said: “We are here.”4.They said that they were there.
Si el V1 (el que introduce el estilo indirecto) está en pasado (lo más frecuente), además de los pronombres o adverbios, cambia el tiempo del V2.Nos referimos a lo que se dijo en el pasado.

No hay regla fija. Sólo sigue la misma lógica que seguirías en Español.

En un statement (oración enunciativa) el hablante transmite una información sin más.
Normalmente van introducidos por los verbos SAY y TELL.
1) Joaquin said: “I don’t like Betis.”
2) Joaquin said that he didn’t like Betis.
3) Joaquin told the reporter that he didn’t like Betis.

SAY (TO SOMEONE) THAT…
He said that he was ill.
He said to Jane that he was ill.
Con o sin complemento de persona. Si lo lleva se usa la preposición TO.
TELL SOMEONE THAT…
Jerry told me that he loved English.
Jerry told that he loved English.
Jerry told to me that he loved English
Con complemento de persona. Se usa sin la preposición TO.
ESTILO INDIRECTO STATEMENTS
Además de say y tell, los statements pueden ir introducidos por otros verbos como:
ANNOUNCE, DECLARE, EXPLAIN, INFORM, INSIST, MENTION, REMIND, STATE…
Todos tienen en común que el hablante simplemente transmite una información, sin más.

En los statements la conjunción THAT puede omitirse. Es lo más normal cuando hablamos:
- He said he would be late
- They explained they didn’t open the door.
- Sara mentioned she had forgotten to put salt in the meal.

El estilo indirecto lo usamos constantemente.
Cuando quieras reproducir lo que dijo otra persona piensa siempre si:
a) Dijo algo sin más.
b) Preguntó algo para saber algo.
c) Dijo algo para que el que le oía hiciera algo.
