“Singularity of Purpose”

My mother remembers exactly what she was doing the day JFK was shot; I remember the morning I arrived at work and on TV saw the Twin Towers on fire and falling down one September 11th. Many will remember exactly where they were and what they were doing when they learned that a missile was fast approaching Hawaii, and later in the week, Japan. Thankfully, these were false alarms! The effect, however, became an indelible memory for many, as was the effect of Jesus' words on those who first heard him say: "The kingdom of God is at hand . . . Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men."

Mark writes with a sense of urgency, immediacy and drama! We are supposed to be drawn in, engaged, and compelled to ask questions about Jesus, his message, and the story. Like dramatic moments in our own lives, we are called to take note; to ponder the meaning, and even to change. We are reminded of a singular purpose: to become active disciples of Jesus.

This means an actual encounter with Christ in the reading of the Bible; growing in knowledge of who he is and a full commitment of our lives to him as his disciples. We see in Mark's Gospel the Father gathering people around his son Jesus in order that they may share in his own divine life. "This gathering is the Church, 'on earth the seed and beginning of the kingdom.’'' (CCC 541).

Moments of singular experience can draw us to the deeper questions of who we are and cause us to seek true meaning. In Christ we find the answers. Allow yourself to be drawn into the drama as we journey with Mark, and consider how this forms our mission as Church here at Saint Mary Cathedral. Fr. Tim __________________________________________________________

Stewardship & Development

Third Sunday of Ordinary Time There is a certain urgency in today’s Gospel as Jesus calls His first disciples—

Andrew and Simon, James and John. Each one follows Jesus immediately, unhesitatingly abandoning nets and boats and father and fellow-workers. To what is Jesus calling me— at this moment, in these circumstances?

What will I need to abandon in order to follow Him?

Padre Tim

Hygiene for the Liturgical Assembly Common Best Practices:

As we enter the flu season, increased attention to hygiene due to the flu and other infectious diseases is certainly appropriate. Common sense practices and liturgical guidelines, many of which were taught to us from our earliest days as sage advice from our parents, are: cover your mouth (when you cough or sneeze); keep your fingers out of your mouth and away from your nose and eyes. Wash your hands after contact with surfaces others have touched; after us-ing the restroom; after blowing your nose. If a person has a fever, is vomiting, or has had either ailment within 24 hours of the Mass, they should not participate in Mass.

General Reminder:

Sunday Obligation: Catholics are not obliged to par ticipate in the Mass on Sunday if they are ill. It is a matter of respect and hospitality not to gather for Mass on Sunday if one is sick. Those unable to participate in Mass, if able, should still observe Sunday, the original feast day, by spending time in prayer; giving thanks to God for life, and our redemption in Christ; recalling our many blessings; praying for strength and healing, and praying for the needs of others. Reading and reflecting on the readings of the day are beneficial. The Scripture texts, as well as an audio reflection, are available at http://www.usccb.org/nab/.

Holy Communion: At this point we serve Holy Communion under both species until fur ther advice from the diocese. If choosing to receive on the tongue, extend your tongue sufficiently making it easy to receive Communion without the minister touching your tongue. Do not receive from the chalice if you have a sore throat or other symptoms of illness. Communion under both forms is a richer sacramental sign in response to our Lord’s instruction to “take and eat” and “take and drink”; however, the doctrine of concomitance reminds us that the real sacramental presence of Christ (body, blood, soul, and divinity) is present entirely under each species, bread or wine.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________
