HISTORY OF “KISWA” The kiswah was

first introduced during the pre-islamic era. It is disputed whether the kiswah was made by Ishmael, or the great-great grandfather of Muhammad, Adnan bin Ad.

The Kiswah in the reign of Muhammad

Muhammad and the Muslims in Mecca did not participate in the draping of the Kaaba until the conquest of the city at 630 CE (7

AH), as the ruling tribe, Quraish, did not allow them to do so. When Mecca was taken by the Muslims, they decided to leave the Kiswah as it was until a woman lighting incense in the Kaaba accidentally burned the Kiswah. Muhammad then draped it with a white Yemeni cloth.

“MAKING OF KISWA” “Kiswa” Kaaba Cloth

This is a piece of the “Kiswa,” a specially adorned black silk cloth which covers the entire Kaaba housing in Mecca. Talented artisans embroider the cloth with real gold plated silver threads into amazing intricate Arabic writing designs of verses from the Quran. Each year a new cloth replaces the old one and the old ones is cut up into smaller pieces. This piece is approximately 4 feet square and is quite heavy as the gold threads are heavy like wire. The craftmanship is astounding.

"Every year the old Kiswa is removed, cut into small pieces and gifted to certain individuals, visiting foreign Muslim dignitaries and organisations. Some of them sell their share as souvenirs of Haj. Earlier Umar bin al-Khattab would cut it in to pieces and distribute them among the pilgrims who used them as shelter from the heat of Makkah
