• Business plan.Elaborate on which user needs have been identified and will be met upon completion of the action, and on the way in which the proposed innovation will outcompete current state-of-the-art solutions in the same sector of activity. Compare your solution with solutions offered by competitors (if any), using a cost-benefit analysis.

Describe the type of market targeted (e.g. niche or high volume). What is the estimation of total available market size and growth rate? What are the market trends? What are you planning to use as main selling points? Describe the most relevant market segments for initial introduction of the new solution, and its potential early adopters / users (both in terms of profile and geographical location).

Elaborate on economic relevance of your solution, in particular with respect to growth of the industry partner(s) in the consortium (turnover, market share, employment creation, longer-term sales expectations, return on investment and profit). In addition, describe the expected economic return on investment of your action for the economy at large, with particular attention for the possible creation of growth and jobs, and possible changes in the main sector of economic activity of the industry partners of the consortium.

IK4-TEKNIKER has always been concerned with friction, lubrication and wear, working in the field of Tribology for over 30 years. The Functional Materials Applied Research Group at COVENTRY UNIVERSITY brings a wealth of expertise and knowledge in the research of electrochemistry, sonochemistry, surface modification, metallisation processes, and patterning of materials. Researchers within the Functional Materials Applied Research Group have a wide experience in industry to develop methods to enable high speed electroplating

BeLEADFREE aims to deliver novel Lead-free journal bearings to large-bore engine builders worldwide, ranging from medium and heavy-duty diesel engines (e.g. commercial road vehicles) to large four-stroke medium-speed engines (e.g. ships, engine generators or gensets). This will be achieved by optimising novel manufacturing approaches that have proven successful at TRL6 and designing and building a pilot line to manufacture Lead-free journal bearings to be validated in real engine working conditions.

DAIDO’s Bismuth-bronze lining materials and manufacturing methods for journal bearings are protected with several patents granted worldwide. Some of these are included below as an example of the IP already in place:

1. K. Kawakami et al, GB patent 2355016, 2001. 2. K. Sakai et al, GB patent 2374086, 2002. 3. S. Ochi et al, EP patent 2135964, 2009. 4. T. Imai et al, GB patent 2478069, 2011. 5. R. Sato et al, EP patent 2561940, 2013.

For the more recent development of novel Tin-based overlays, 2 patents have already been filed in UK and overseas. More IP is currently being generated to further extend the protection of the technology and ensure commercial exploitation. It is expected that, by the time the BeLEADFREE project starts, this IP will already be in place.

Novel Bismuth-bronze exhibits significantly higher strength than Aluminium-based materials currently available in the market, making it the best option in high-load bearing applications, as already proven by the wide use of DAIDO’s Bismuth-bronze in the automotive diesel market.

Al mercado en menos de 36 meses:

• The BeLEADFREE project will design and construct an optimised plating line capable to manufacture novel Lead-free journal bearings for the large-bore engine market.

• The development of a commercialisation roadmap will provide the consortium partners with versatile tools to support DAIDO in the final step to the introduction of the Lead-free technology into the market.

• New technical skills developed during the project by ELSYCA, TEKNIKER and COVENTRY will allow them to expand their expertise and explore new business areas and applications for their consultancy services.

DAIDO will commit a substantial capital investment on Innovation activities in the EU. €400k will be dedicated to improve R&D facilities in UK during the BeLEADFREE project and establish a ‘Centre of Excellence in Bearing Electroplating Research’. In Czech Republic, will be invest in setting new test equipment to support future implementation of the technology in production. In terms of manufacturing capabilities, DAIDO will progressively invest in the 36 months following the completion of the project to expand/update production capabilities in Czech Republic and UK. 70% percent of DAIDO’s capital costs in the BeLEADFREE project would come from FTI funding, while the rest would be funded by DAIDO itself.
