T e a c h i n g t o u n l e a r n

► LEARNER AUTONOMY

“Do you mind if I just listen in?My speaking level is too low to participate.”

• Give opportunities for learner-driven choices• Set clear learning outcomes and discuss them• Reflect on learning experience

Learners are at the centre of the learning experience.

T e a c h i n g t o u n l e a r n

► INCLUSION

“I am the stupid one.”

•Teaching learning skills

• Activities: Experts, Fishbowl, Jigsaw

• Scaffold, provide exemplars, model

Setting high expectations for all learners: socially disadvantaged students.

T e a c h i n g t o u n l e a r n

► GROUPWORK AND COLLABORATION

• Scaffolds keep students on track

(speaking frames, visual guides, time limits)

• CALP and L1

• Translanguaging

• Social and emotional values of L1

• Think-Pair-Share

• Organize physical space / flexible groupings

• Gradual transfer of responsibility

I don’t do pair work or group work because

my students speak too much Spanish.”

CALP: Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (Cummins)L1-first language

T e a c h i n g t o u n l e a r n

► ACTIVATE CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

“Can I activate HOTS with primary school students?”

Set cognitively complex tasks.

•Analyze: classify, compare, organise information•Evaluate: ask good questions-justify, argue, judge(Socratic seminars )• Create: brainstorming and brainwriting

T e a c h i n g t o u n l e a r n

► CHALLENGING OUR BELIEFS AND ASSUMPTIONS: UNLEARNING

“One enemy of robust science is our humanity— our appetite for being right, and our tendency to find patterns in noise,to see supporting evidence for what we already believe is true, and to ignore the facts that do not fit.”

Nature 526, 163 (08 October 2015) based on Jon Ronson in So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed (Picador, 2015)
