La filosofía siempre presente

Es posible que en momentos difíciles, cuando lasimple supervivencia material se vuelve prioritaria,pueda pensarse que la filosofía es un artículo de lujo,apropiado para épocas en las que todo funciona bien.Sin embargo, comprobamos, y ahora más que nun -

ca, que la filosofía es un soporte válido para todos lostiempos.Esta es la idea que sustentaron todos los grandes

pensadores y, siguiendo sus huellas, es una experien-cia muy interesante recogida por Nueva Acrópolisdesde hace cincuenta años que queremos compartircon nuestros amigos.

Philosophy: always present

It is possible that in difficult times, when simplematerial survival becomes a priority, philosophy maybe thought of as a luxury item, more appropriate fortimes when everything is going well.However, we find that, today more than ever, philo-

sophy is a valid support for all times.

This is the idea that was held by all great thinkers,and following in their footsteps, it is also the expe-rience that we, in New Acropolis, have had over thelast fifty years and would like to share with ourfriends.

A Message from the International President

En primer lugar, tengamos en cuenta que, en cual-quier período de la Historia, los seres humanos hanconsiderado que su tiempo ha sido el más difícil.Simplemente porque en ese instante han tenido queafrontar las dificultades propias de la existencia.Todos se han visto, precisamente, delante de los

problemas derivados de su estilo de vida, de sus nece-sidades, de sus ambiciones y de sus posibilidades.Así considerado, no hay momentos fáciles en la

Historia.Necesitamos un cierto alejamiento temporal, una

distancia que nos conceda objetividad, para com-prender que, a pesar de los conflictos, siempre huboluces brillantes en medio de la más terrible oscuridad.Son las luces que enciende la filosofía como ayuda

indispensable para penetrar en el fondo de las cues-tiones y hallar las soluciones más adecuadas.

En segundo lugar, y como bien decía un sabio de latalla de Albert Einstein, en épocas duras, la creativi-dad surge por reacción ante las carencias, abriendonuevas vías a toda la Humanidad. Vale la pena recor-dar sus palabras:«La creatividad nace de la angustia como el día nace

de la noche oscura. Es en la crisis donde nace lainventiva, los descubrimientos y las grandes estrate-gias. Quien supera la crisis se supera a sí mismo sinquedar ‘superado’».

Por eso decimos que la filosofía ha de estar siemprepresente:Cuando todo marcha con fluidez, porque es el ciclo

más apropiado para dar pasos adelante en todos losámbitos del saber y, sobre todo, para aprovechar elpotencial de los valores morales que, sin duda, sonlos que marcan los períodos más fructíferos de laHumanidad.Cuando los tiempos son duros, porque es hora de

buscar en la filosofía las soluciones que no vienendesde otros ámbitos, para encontrar respuestas senci-llas y prácticas a todas las necesidades humanas.Porque la filosofía, como una forma de sentir y pen-

sar, como una forma de vivir, en pocas palabras, estáen la raíz de todo lo que hacemos.

Filosofía no es complejidad de pensamiento sinoclaridad de principios y fines en la vida.

First of all, we need to realize that in any period ofhistory, human beings have always thought that theirtimes were the most difficult ones. And this is simplybecause in those moments they had to confront thedifficulties that are natural to existence.People have always been faced precisely with those

problems that arise from their way of life, their needs,their ambitions, and their possibilities.Seen in this light, there are no easy times in history.We need a certain distance in time, a distance that

can give us the objectivity to understand that, in spiteof all the conflicts, there have always been brightlights in the midst of the most terrible darkness.They are the lights that have been lit by Philosophy,

which has always helped human beings to seethrough to the essence of every question and find themost appropriate solutions.

Secondly, as Einstein pointed out, during difficulttimes, creativity arises as a reaction to scarcity, ope-ning up new paths for humanity. It is useful toremember his words:

«Creativity is born from anguish, just as day is bornfrom the dark night. It is in crisis that inventiveness,discoveries and great strategies are born. He whoovercomes crisis overcomes himself without being‘overcome’».

This is why we say that philosophy has to be alwayspresent:Because when everything is going smoothly, that is

the most appropriate cycle in which to move forwardin all fields of knowledge; and above all, to takeadvantage of the potential of moral values which areundoubtedly the values that mark the most fruitfulperiods of humanity.And because when times are hard, that is the time to

search in philosophy for the solutions that do notcome from other areas, to find simple and practicalanswers to all human needs.Because philosophy, as a way of feeling and thin-

king, in other words, as a way of living, is at the rootof everything we do.

Philosophy is not complexity of thought, but clarityof principles and aims in life.

Filosofía para tiempos de crisis

El mundo está viviendo una época de cambios. Elhombre ve que se derrumban las estructuras en lasque siempre había confiado y que le daban seguridaden la vida. Esta nueva realidad le ha generado inesta-bilidad y desconcierto, incrementándose el temor, laagresividad, la depresión y el estrés.

Ante esta crisis que afecta a todo el globo, nos rea-firmamos una vez más en la utilidad de la filosofíaclásica que promueve Nueva Acrópolis, como unaherramienta útil para interpretar las circunstanciasque vivimos y encontrar soluciones prácticas.

Philosophy for Times of Crisis

The World is going through a time of change.People are seeing the structures in which they hadalways trusted and felt secure falling apart. This newreality has generated a sense of instability and confu-sion, with an increase in fear, aggression, depressionand stress.

Confronted with this crisis that is affecting the enti-re world, we reaffirm the usefulness of the classicalphilosophy which New Acropolis promotes, as a use-ful tool for interpreting the circumstances in whichwe are living and for finding practical solutions.

A Message from the International Deputy President

The roots of the crisis do not lie in the systems, butin human beings. What we are now going through isthe consequence of a crisis of values, of a society thatis falling apart - because its foundations are materia-listic, and because it has forgotten that a culture isbased upon human beings.

Philosophy helps us to remain serene in the face ofadversity and gives us clarity in the midst of so muchconfusion, allowing us to choose the best options thatcan benefit humanity as a whole.

It is urgent to return to the values that will allow usto live in social harmony and to go back to a simplerway of life, without so much sophistication, so thathuman beings can live in harmony with themselvesand their surroundings. We need to promote solida-rity, honesty, trust, respect, and tolerance.

We cannot expect our systems to provide all thesolutions, because they too grow old. Individuals,together with their communities, need to be creativein order to find the best alternatives to their needs,relying on their own inner strength and the strengththat comes from union. We need to restore the senseof work as a character-building process, and eradica-te the idea that there are some forms of work that aremore or less prestigious than others. All forms ofwork can be important and necessary if they are per-formed with freedom and dignity.We need to restore the spirit of idealism and fight

against selfishness, have faith that the human beingcan improve, and trust that together we can transformour surroundings to forge a different, better and morenoble future.

This yearbook is a sample of the work that NewAcropolis is doing around the world, demonstratingthat the philosophy in the classical tradition that weare proposing can bring about truly positive changesin human beings and our surroundings.

El origen de la crisis no está en los sistemas ni en latecnología, sino en el hombre mismo. Lo que vivimoses la consecuencia de una crisis de valores, de unasociedad que se derrumba porque sus cimientos sonmaterialistas y porque ha olvidado que una cultura sesustenta en los seres humanos.

La filosofía nos ayuda a mantener la serenidad deánimo ante la adversidad y nos da claridad en medio detanta confusión para saber elegir las mejores op cionesque beneficien a la Humanidad en su conjunto.

Urge retornar a los valores que permiten la convi-vencia y volver a una vida más sencilla, sin tantasofisticación, para que el hombre pueda vivir enarmonía consigo mismo y con el entorno. Debemospromover la solidaridad, la honestidad, la confianza,el respeto y la tolerancia.

No esperemos que los sistemas nos den todas lassoluciones, porque estos también envejecen. El indi-viduo, junto con su comunidad, debe ser creativopara encontrar las mejores alternativas a sus necesi-dades, sustentándose en sus propias fuerzas interioresy en la fuerza que da la unión. Debemos recuperar elsentido formativo del trabajo, erradicando la idea deque hay trabajos más o menos prestigiosos. Todos lostrabajos pueden ser importantes y necesarios si serealizan con libertad y dignidad.

Necesitamos recuperar el idealismo y combatir elegoísmo, tener fe en que el hombre puede ser mejory que, juntos, podemos transformar nuestro entornopara forjar un futuro diferente, más bueno y másnoble.

Este anuario es una muestra de la obra que realizaNueva Acrópolis en todo el mundo, demostrando quela filosofía a la manera clásica que proponemos pue -de realizar verdaderos cambios positivos en el hom-bre y en nuestro entorno.

OINA Organización Internacional Nueva Acrópolis

Nueva Acrópolis es una organización internacionalde carácter filosófico, cultural y social.

Fue fundada en 1957 en Buenos Aires (Argentina)por el Prof. Jorge Ángel Livraga Rizzi (1930-1991),historiador y filósofo.

La filosofía que promueve la OINA es, sobre todo,una manera de vivir al alcance de cualquier persona,poniendo en práctica las enseñanzas de los grandessabios de todos los tiempos. La aplicación del conoci-miento trae como consecuencia un individuo mejor,capaz, por consiguiente, de construir un mundo mejor.

La experiencia filosófica sustenta un modelo de cul-tura activa y participativa, que pone en juego las cua-lidades de cada persona, amplía el horizonte mental yse abre a todas las manifestaciones del espíritu.

Ese estilo de cultura nos hace libres y mejores.

La vocación de servicio a la Humanidad se concre-ta en un decidido compromiso con la sociedad de hoyy con el futuro, una voluntad de responder a los gran-des interrogantes que provoca en nosotros un mundocargado de contradicciones y desafíos.

Principios de la OINA

1. Promover el respeto a la dignidad humana sin dis-tinción de creencias, culturas y condiciones sociales,reuniendo así a hombres y mujeres en torno a un idealde fraternidad y solidaridad.

2. Despertar una visión global y el pensamiento crea-tivo ante los problemas del mundo actual, mediante elestudio comparado de las filosofías, las ciencias, lasreligiones y las artes.

3. Desarrollar las capacidades del individuo paraque pueda integrarse en la Naturaleza y ampliar lascualidades de su personalidad a través de su acciónen el entorno.

New Acropolis is an international organization of aphilosophical, cultural and social nature.

It was founded in 1957 in Buenos Aires (Argentina)by historian and philosopher Jorge Ángel LivragaRizzi (1930-1991).

The philosophy promoted by New Acropolis is,above all, a way of life which is accessible to all,which consists of putting into practice the teachingsof the sages of all times. The application of knowled-ge results in a better individual, who will therefore becapable of building a better world.

Philosophical experience forms the basis for a modelof active and participative culture, which brings outthe qualities of each person, broadens the horizons ofthe mind and fosters all expressions of the spirit.

This type of culture makes us free and better.

The sense of service to humanity takes the form ofa firm commitment to today's society and to the futu-re, and a determination to answer the great questionsthat arise from living in a world full of contradictionsand challenges.

Filosofía a la manera clásica

El corazón de la OINA se encuentra en su Escuelade Filosofía, entendida como una forma de vida, esdecir, como una vía de acceso al conocimiento espi-ritual y a la realización individual y colectiva. EstaEscuela de Filosofía desarrolla un programa de estu-dios, común para todos los países, impartido en nive-les sucesivos. Se trata de una actualización de losconocimientos tradicionales de Oriente y Occidenteque, siguiendo el humanismo clásico, relaciona cien-cias, artes, religiones y filosofías, de manera compa-rada.

Si la filosofía –como búsqueda de la verdad– consi-gue acercarnos a la raíz de las cosas, a su porqué pro-fundo, todo adquiere un nuevo significado. Es impor-tante saber por qué actuamos y a quién queremosbeneficiar con nuestras acciones y lo que queremoslograr.

Una filosofía práctica, que sirva para vivir, para ar -monizar al ser hu mano con los demás y con elmundo, para aceptar lo que uno es y luchar por lo quese quiere ser.

School of Philosophy in the Classical Tradition

At the heart of the activities of New Acropolis is itsSchool of Philosophy, which we understand as a wayof life, that is, as a means of access to spiritual knowledge and to individual and collective realiza-tion. This School of Philosophy has a Program ofStudies which is common to all countries and istaught in successive levels. It provides an updatedversion of the traditional knowledge of East andWest, which, in accordance with classical humanism,combines the study of sciences, arts, religions andphilosophies in a comparative way.

If philosophy –as a search for the truth– manages tobring us closer to the root of things, to their deepestcause, everything takes on a new meaning. It is impor-tant to know why we act and who we want to benefitwith our actions and what we want to achieve.

Día Mundial de la Filosofía

Una parte muy importante de los programas forma-tivos de la OINA se dedica a la promoción de la filo-sofía, como una actividad altamente beneficiosa paralos seres humanos de nuestro tiempo.

Merece destacarse el eco que encuentra en los cen-tros de todo el mundo la invitación de la UNESCO aconmemorar el Día Mundial de la Filosofía a lo largodel mes de noviembre: tertulias filosóficas, debatesentre especialistas, escenificación de episodios rele-vantes de la historia de la filosofía, homenajes a lossabios de todos los tiempos, son algunos ejemplos dela extraordinaria variedad que la imaginación de losjóvenes filósofos de Nueva Acrópolis son capaces deponer en acción.

Jornada Anual Internacional de Filosofía

Siguiendo su programa de investigación, se celebróen la ciudad de San Salvador la Jornada Anual Inter -nacional de Filosofía, coincidiendo con la AsambleaGeneral anual de la OINA. Se presentaron medio cen-tenar de trabajos, que fueron seleccionados de entrelos elaborados por los grupos de estudio de los dife-rentes países en los que la OINA se encuentra implan-tada. En esta ocasión el tema propuesto era «Los valo-res morales y el conocimiento. Virtud y sabiduría».

World Philosophy Day

A major part of I.O.N.A.'s educational programs con-cerns the promotion of Philosophy as an activity thatcan bring great benefits to people today.

Many New Acropolis centres around the world res-ponded enthusiastically to Unesco's invitation tocommemorate World Philosophy Day throughout themonth of November: philosophical cafés, debatesbetween specialists, plays featuring episodes fromthe history of philosophy, tributes to the wise menand women of all times - these are some examples ofthe extraordinary variety of events generated by theimagination of the young philosophers of NewAcropolis.

Annual InternationalPhilosophy Conference

In line with its program of research, the AnnualInternational Philosophy Conference was held inSan Salvador, coinciding with I.O.N.A.'s AnnualGeneral Meeting. Around 50 academic papers werepresented, out of a selection of papers written bystudy groups in different countries where I.O.N.A.has branches. On this occasion, the common themewas "Moral Values and Knowledge. Virtue andWisdom".

El Instituto Tristán está desarrollando diversas dis-ciplinas artísticas en torno a una inquietud común:retomar los valores humanistas del arte. Sus camposde actividad abarcan ámbitos no sólo técnicos, sinotambién educativos, culturales y filosóficos.

Líneas de investigación

Dentro del ámbito educativo y filosófico, se ha inda-gado en la filosofía y en la estética del arte, recopi-lando material pedagógico-didáctico (música, danza,teatro), tanto en la actualidad como en las antiguascivilizaciones.

Actividades

Una de las especialidades de este Instituto es la deunir música, danza y teatro en una misma actuación,buscando que el público experimente y participe másprofundamente en esta acción conjunta.

Como contribución a la Fiesta Internacional de laMúsica («Fête de la Musique») el 21 de junio, se pro-movieron conciertos gratuitos en muchas ciudadessede de la OINA, demostrando que las diferencias deestilos musicales del mundo enriquecen y ayudan a laconvivencia y la amistad.

The Tristan Institute practises different artistic dis-ciplines, but they all share a common goal: to restorethe humanistic values of art. Its activities cover notonly technical development, but also include educa-tional, cultural and philosophical aspects.

Lines of research

Within the educational and philosophical area, theInstitute has carried out research into philosophy andaesthetics, compiling teaching material in the areas ofmusic, dance and theatre, both from the present dayand from ancient civilisations.

Activities

One of the specialisms of this Institute is the unifi-cation of music, dance and theatre in a single perfor-mance, with the aim of enabling the audience toexperience and participate more profoundly in thiscombined form of expression.

As a contribution to the International Festival ofMusic ("Fête de la Musique") on 21 June, free con-certs were organized in many cities where I.O.N.A.has branches, showing that the different musicalstyles of the world enrich one another and support thecause of social harmony and friendship.

El enfoque filosófico de las artes marciales propor-ciona medios para enfrentarse a las diversas circuns-tancias de la vida con un espíritu positivo, alejado demiedos y ansiedades. Sus practicantes descubren quelas disciplinas marciales no solo ofrecen precisión demovimientos o dominio de la energía, sino otras des-trezas más profundas, como el control de los deseosy el descubrimiento de valores como la valentía y laserenidad, tan necesarios en nuestras sociedades.

The philosophical approach of the martial arts pro-vides ways of facing the different circumstances oflife with a positive spirit, instead of with fear andanxiety. Its practitioners discover that the martial dis-ciplines offer not only precision of movements ormastery of energy, but other more inner skills, such asthe control of desires and the discovery of valuessuch as bravery and serenity, which are so necessaryin our societies.

Instituto «Hermes» de Ciencias Humanas

Esta iniciativa de la OINA se propone rescatar elideal atemporal del humanismo renacentista, quecontempla a los seres humanos y a la sociedad en sucompleja dimensión bio-psicológica y espiritual, de -sa rrollando proyectos de estudio y actividades forma-tivas con quienes estén interesados en profundizar enlos variados aspectos de la realidad humana y social.

En el marco de su programa internacional de inves-tigación sobre la geografía sagrada, se realizó unviaje de estudios a la zona arqueológica de Copán, enHonduras, en el curso del cual se analizaron las par-ticularidades de este importante centro ceremonialmaya y sus elementos de conexión con otras civiliza-ciones.

Un grupo de investigadores ha aportado al institutouna interesante investigación histórica sobre la civili-zación hitita en Anatolia. El equipo de Austria ha lle-vado a cabo un análisis de la obra de Jung y sus refe-rencias al simbolismo hermético. También en Israelse ha conformado un nuevo equipo de estudiosos delinstituto.

Por otra parte, en el curso de la celebración de sus jor-nadas anuales en Francia, se pusieron en marcha dosnuevos programas de investigación: el proyecto de las«Rutas de la sabiduría», que estudiará las formas dedifusión del conocimiento a través de la historia y lageografía, y la preparación para la conmemoración delos 25 siglos de la Academia platónica, mediante elseguimiento de la influencia del gran filósofo griego queha inspirado a tantos pensadores a lo largo del tiempo.

"Hermes" Institute of Human Sciences

The aim of this initiative of I.O.N.A. is to recoverthe timeless ideal of Renaissance humanism, whichsees human beings and society in their complex bio-psychological and spiritual dimension. It does this bycarrying out study projects and educational activitieswith people who are interested in going deeper intothe varied aspects of the human and social reality.

Within the framework of its international researchprogram on Sacred Geography, the Institute organi-zed a study trip to the archaeological site of Copán,in Honduras, where participants studied the particularfeatures of this important Maya ceremonial centreand its elements of connection with other civiliza-tions.

A group of researchers contributed an interestinghistorical research paper on the Hittite civilization inAnatolia. The Austrian team carried out an analysisof the work of Jung and his references to Hermeticsymbolism. In Israel a new team of researchers of theInstitute has been formed.

In the course of its annual Conference in France,two new research programs were initiated: the"Routes of Wisdom" project, which will study howknowledge has spread through History andGeography; and preparations for the commemorationof the 25th centenary of the Platonic Academy, byfollowing the influence of the great Greek philoso-pher who has inspired so many thinkers over time.

Nuestro voluntariado, en sus variados sectores deactividad, ha representado un testimonio concreto decoherencia con los principios que mueven al serhumano hacia los demás. Es una experiencia viva desolidaridad y participación que, gracias al esfuerzomeritorio de tantos jóvenes voluntarios, animados deun entusiasmo filosófico y ciudadano, han llevado acabo de manera auténtica y tangible una acción coti-diana para plasmar y promover los principios de latolerancia, la solidaridad y el respeto a la dignidadhumana y la atención a los más débiles.

El trabajo de los voluntarios está adquiriendo unvalor considerable, puesto que este fenómeno estágestando la base de una cultura del voluntariado pro-pia de una sociedad más justa, más humana. Tambiénnosotros, los voluntarios de Nueva Acrópolis, en másde 60 países en el mundo, estamos ofreciendo nues-tra contribución para conformar esta cultura delvoluntariado, más allá de las diferentes tradicionesculturales, políticas y religiosas. No se trata de unamoda, sino de la necesidad y el deseo de volver a sernaturales, echando por tierra tantas máscaras que elconsumismo y la comodidad han creado en estosaños, para volver a ser lo que realmente somos.

Nosotros formamos parte de ese núcleo de la socie-dad que no se limita a hablar de solidaridad, toleran-cia, dación, generosidad, gratuidad, sino que practi-camos estos valores y tratamos de construir un esti-lo, un modelo de vida, necesario para caminar ennuestro interior hacia el descubrimiento de nuestraverdadera realidad.

In its varied areas of activity, our volunteering is atangible proof of the principles that move humanbeings to come together with others. It is a livingexperience of solidarity and participation which,thanks to the worthy effort of so many young volun-teers, motivated by philosophical and civic enthu-siasm, has resulted in regular and consistent activi-ties to promote and give tangible expression to theprinciples of tolerance, solidarity, respect for humandignity and care for the weaker members of society.

The work of volunteers is acquiring increasingvalue nowadays, and this phenomenon is beginningto build the bases of a culture of volunteering charac-teristic of a more just and humane society. We too,the volunteers of New Acropolis in more than 60countries around the world, are offering our contribu-tion to creating this culture of volunteering beyondthe different cultural, political and religious tradi-tions. It is not a passing fashion, but arises from theneed and the desire to become natural again, by put-ting aside so many masks that consumerism and com-fort have created in recent years, in order to becomeagain what we truly are.

We form part of that core of society that does notconfine itself to talking about solidarity, tolerance,giving, generosity and doing things free of charge,but practises these values; we are trying to constructa way or model of life which is necessary if we are towalk within ourselves towards the discovery of ourtrue reality.

El voluntariado de Nueva Acrópolis ha trabajado deforma responsable, interviniendo allí donde las res-puestas institucionales no llegaban a tiempo o demanera insuficiente. Verdaderamente, somos unrecurso muy útil para la sociedad y, sobre todo, paralas instituciones, pero debemos aclarar que nuestrovoluntariado no es un instrumento para cubrir lascarencias institucionales, sino también un modelo decolaboración para que puedan definirse mejor suscontenidos estratégicos y operativos.

Formación

Con el fin de que nuestro voluntariado sirva comoinstrumento de educación para la vida, resultanimprescindibles nuestros cursos de formación, quevan integrándose cada vez más en las variadas reali-dades de los países en los que Nueva Acrópolis seencuentra implantada. De hecho, no hay que dar porsupuesta la adquisición de valores por parte de losvoluntarios ni de las motivaciones que se encuentranen la base de la acción, si no queremos reducir la con-ciencia de este enriquecedor esfuerzo de formaciónen una simple teorización que acabe estancando a losjóvenes.

The volunteering of New Acropolis has been carriedout in a responsible way, intervening whenever insti-tutional responses could not arrive on time or wereinsufficient. We are indeed a very useful resource forsociety and especially for institutions, but we mustclarify that our volunteering is not a means to fill thegaps left by institutional shortcomings, but also amodel of collaboration so that their strategic and ope-rational contents can be better defined.

Education and Training

In order for our volunteering to become a useful toolfor educating people for life, our training courses,which are increasingly integrated into the varied rea-lities of the countries in which New Acropolis is esta-blished, are indispensable. In fact, it should not beassumed that volunteers will naturally acquire valuesor motives as the basis of their actions; if we fail togive due importance to an awareness of these factors,the enriching effort of volunteer training could bereduced to a mere learning of theoretical principles,which will end up holding back the enthusiasm of theyoung.

Los programas de voluntariado de la OINA se dise-ñan de acuerdo con las necesidades sociales de cadalugar, donde el desarrollo de la estructura operativade nuestra organización permite una eficaz coordina-ción de los grupos de voluntarios. Cuando los casoslo requieren, la estructura internacional de NuevaAcrópolis coordina los apoyos necesarios para llevaradelante proyectos de mayor envergadura y comple-jidad.

En algunas oportunidades, los grupos de voluntariosde la OINA llevan a cabo acciones coordinadas conGEA, una organización de voluntariado independien-te surgida en el seno de la OINA y que actúa en variospaíses, desarrollando programas de cooperación coninstituciones públicas y privadas.

La Asamblea General de la OINA, en su reuniónanual de 2008 en la ciudad de San Salvador (ElSalvador) desea resaltar que:

En el pasado año de 2007 se han cumplido cincuen-ta años de actividades ininterrumpidas en beneficiodel pensamiento filosófico, de la cultura, del entendi-miento entre los pueblos, la tolerancia y la proteccióndel medio ambiente.

Y resuelve:

a) Reafirmar nuestra voluntad de seguir trabajandoen el desarrollo de la filosofía como un comporta-miento vital, que busca alcanzar un mayor grado deconciencia social y conocimiento personal. Continuarasimismo actuando en el campo de la cultura, puescomo ya hemos señalado en reiteradas ocasiones, lasexpresiones culturales de la Humanidad sirven defundamento a unas mejores relaciones humanas y unamejor compresión y acercamiento entre los pueblos.Y continuar también en la promoción del voluntaria-do, como una expresión del inegoísmo y la solidari-dad entre las distintas manifestaciones de la sociedad,que sirve para afianzar los lazos de convivencia y res-peto en el marco de la ayuda mutua.

b) Continuar con el desarrollo de nuestros progra-mas internacionales, que coordinan actividades rela-cionadas con las manifestaciones artísticas, musica-les, las ciencias humanas, la formación del carácter yla voluntad, tal como se reflejan en el Anuario que seentrega en cada Asamblea General, en el cual se reco-gen todas las actividades que la OINA acomete enmás de cincuenta países en el mundo.

c) Destacar el apoyo de la OINA a la conmemora-ción del sesenta aniversario de la DeclaraciónUniversal de los Derechos Humanos (1948-2008),promovida por la Organización de las NacionesUnidas, y a la iniciativa de la Unión Europea que hadeclarado al año 2008 como Año Europeo del Diálo -go Intercultural.

At its 2008 annual meeting in the city of SanSalvador (El Salvador), the General Assembly ofI.O.N.A. wishes to highlight that:

Last year –2007– it completed fifty years of uninte-rrupted activities in the service of philosophicalthought, culture, international understanding, tolerance and protection of the environment.

It therefore resolves:

a) To reaffirm its intention to continue to work forthe development of philosophy as a way of life, withthe aim of attaining a higher degree of social aware-ness and self-knowledge. Also to continue to act inthe field of culture, since, as we have already pointedout on many occasions, the cultural expressions ofhumanity provide a foundation for better human rela-tionships and a better understanding and rapproche-ment between nations. And to continue to promotevolunteering as an expression of unselfishness andsolidarity between the different parts of society,which will help to strengthen the bonds of harmo-nious coexistence and respect within a framework ofmutual co-operation and support.

b) To continue to develop its InternationalPrograms, which combine activities related to thearts, music and human sciences, character buildingand the development of will-power, as is reflected inthe Yearbook which is distributed at every GeneralMeeting and contains all the activities undertaken byI.O.N.A. in over fifty countries world-wide.

c) To highlight I.O.N.A.'s support for the comme-moration of the Sixtieth Anniversary of the UniversalDeclaration of Human Rights (1948-2008) promotedby the United Nations, and the European Unioninitiative which has declared 2008 as the EuropeanYear of Intercultural Dialogue.
