Why the study the Microbiome is important?
Procariotes y Eucariotes
ANIMALES:
Gran número de genes (20.000-30.000) en núcleo
protegido: transmisión vertical.
Pero carecen de genes para sintetizar compuestos
esenciales (amino-ácidos, vitaminas) y para extraer
energía de sustratos complejos.
BACTERIAS:
Sin núcleo, pocos genes (500 a 4.000), un cromosoma
y elementos móviles: transmisión horizontal de genes.
 Forman comunidades multispecies.
La comunidad obtiene energía metabólica de
múltiples substratos, sintetiza compuestos esenciales, y
se adapta a cambios ambientales.
Las comunidades microbianas del
intestino contribuyen a la extracción de
energía de sustratos indigeribles, y a la
síntesis de vitaminas y amino-ácidos

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS OF THE GUT MICROBIOTA
• Metabolic functions: fermentation of
nondigestible dietary residue and endogenous
mucus: salvage of energy as SCFA, production of
vitamin K, absorption of ions.
• Defensive functions: protection against
pathogens (the barrier effect).
• Trophic functions: control of epithelial cell
proliferation and differentiation; development
and homeostasis of the immune system.

Contribution of Microbial Amino Acids to the Human Host
Up to 8-10 grams of lysine and threonine derive daily from gut microbial sources in adult humans with an adequate protein intake

o Competencia Funcional (metabolismo y trofismo)
o Biodiversidad (mutualistas, comensales y exclusión de
patógenos)
o Ecología estable (resistencia a ‘stress’ y recuperación)
