One of Walt Disney's classic movies is an adaptation of a German fairy tale The Little
Mermaid. In the film version, a mermaid, the daughter of King Triton, the Lord of the
sea, falls in love with a human prince. Deceived by the false promise of a wicked sea
witch, the mermaid ends up selling herself into the witch's power through her efforts
to win the prince's love. When King Triton hears of his daughter's plight, he rushes to
her rescue. But since the mermaid had freely made a deal with the witch, the king has
only one option: he should let himself be locked up in the witch's prison in order to set
his daughter free.
His love is so great that, of course, he is willing to make the sacrifice. It is a beautiful
story, and it rings true - there is something right and noble about sacrificing oneself for
the good of others.
That's love - that's God's love, which goes much deeper than emotions, and we are cre-
ated in God's image, so deep down we all want to love like that. But, in The Little Mer-
maid's case, King Triton's love for his daughter was a natural love. Every father would
do the same, and we all have experienced the beauty of this natural, self-sacrificial
love at work in our fathers.
But Christ takes this natural love and super-naturalizes it. Christian love extends this
self-forgetfulness not just to members of our immediate family, but to everyone. That's
why our Church is called "Catholic." This is also why everyone calls a Catholic priest,
"Father": he has to be a living image and representative of God's supernatural, uncon-
ditional and universal love for all God’s children.
This is the strength that every Christian father is also called to embody as we cele-
brate Father’s Day!

Una de las películas clásicas de Walt Disney, es una adaptación del Cuento de Hadas
Alemán La Sirenita. En la versión de la película, una sirena, hija del rey Tritón, el señor
de los mares, se enamora de un príncipe humano. Engañada por la falsa promesa de
una perversa bruja del mar, la sirenita termina vendiéndose ella misma al poder de la
bruja, en su esfuerzo para alcanzar el amor del príncipe. Cuando el rey Tritón escucha lo
que su hija prometió, se apresura a rescatarla. Pero la princesa, que libremente hizo el
trato con la bruja, al rey no le queda otra opción más que: dejarse encerrar en la prisión
de la bruja, para dejar en libertad a su hija.
Su amor es tan grande que, él está dispuesto a sacrificarse. Es una historia bella, y sue-
na cierta - hay algo recto y noble al sacrificarse él mismo por el bien de los demás.
Eso es amor - es el amor de Dios, que es más profundo que las emociones, y nosotros
fuimos creados a imagen de Dios, así que en lo más profundo, nosotros queremos amar
de esa forma. Pero en el caso de La Sirenita, el amor del rey Tritón por su hija, era un
amor natural. Cada padre haría lo mismo, y todos hemos experimentado la belleza de
este amor sacrificado por parte de nuestros padres.
Pero Cristo, toma este amor natural y lo super naturaliza. El amor cristiano extiende el
olvidarse de si mismo no solo por los miembros de nuestra familia inmediata, sino por
todos. Por eso nuestra Iglesia es llamada "Católica." Por eso también, un Sacerdote Ca-
tólico es llamado, "Padre": él debe ser la imagen viva y representativa del amor super-
natural, incondicional y universal de Dios hacia todos sus hijos.
¡Esta es la fuerza que cada padre cristiano ha sido llamado a incorporar al celebrar ,
hoy el Día del Padre!
