A NOTE TO THE READER
This novel contains a manageable amount of
level-one vocabulary and countless cognates
(words that are similar in two languages), making it
an ideal read for beginning students. All words are
listed in the glossary at the back of the book. Keep
in mind that many verbs are listed numerous times
throughout the glossary, as most are listed in var-
ious forms and tenses. (Ex.: I go, he goes, he went,
etc.)
Cultural words/phrases and any vocabulary that
would be considered beyond a ‘novice-mid’ level
are footnoted at the bottom of the page where each
appears. These words are also listed in the glossary.
Although the locations and situations are real,
the story itself is fictitious, as are the characters. The
story parallels real-life issues that modern day Costa
Rica faces. We hope you enjoy reading it! ¡Pura
vida!

men horrible.
i
Ciencias Ambientales. Alex y Gabriel van a Costa Rica

¡Me parece imposible!

distancia estaban unos cafetales.

Carolina estaba nerviosa. Realmente no quería pe-
– Me parece excelente. Gracias, Jacques. Nosvemos entonces.
6
Seguramente iban a ir a un restaurante fino. Carolina

a Carolina.
