Narratives and Perspectives in Sociology: Understanding the Past, Envisaging the Future
Narratives and Perspectives in Sociology:
Understanding the Past, Envisaging the Future
The theme of 8th Annual Conference, Hong Kong Sociological Association, Narratives and Perspectives
in Sociology: Understanding the Past, Envisaging the Future, was chosen because it embodies the
dynamic and diverse nature of the discipline. The Conference is designed to encourage us to reflect upon
emerging trends and futures for sociology and individuals working in the social sciences. One such
possible future may be found in the recent emergence of narrative or story construction as an influential
and integrating perspective in sociology that builds upon the interpretative sociological tradition in
sociology. However, there are other futures that await our exploration. What these will become depends
among other things on the kinds of individuals we manage to attract to the discipline, the quality of our
theories, and the degree to which sociologists co-operate in trying to make sense of the social world - past,
present and future. We have entirely serviceable perspectives and tools at our disposal that have withstood
the test of time. As we more forward into the 21st century it is simply a question how we use them to
continue to produce new theoretical insights and outstanding examples of research. To the extent that the
8th Annual Conference succeeds in promoting a critical discussion of our theoretical and methodological
approach to the practice of sociology we will have contributed to this enterprise.
The 8th Annual Conference is hosted by the Department of Sociology at Hong Kong Shue Yan College.
In addition, the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies and the Centre of Qualitative Social Research,
also at Shue Yan College, have provided invaluable inputs into developing the Conference. We would also
like to take this opportunity to thank Air China for agreeing to serve as sponsor for the Conference.

Rediscovering Chinese Society in the Socialist Era:
‘Using the Past to Serve the Present’
Jonathan Unger
Australian National University
The 1950s, 1960s and 1970s witnessed tumultuous social change. Nevertheless, little sociological research
about China was carried out during the period of Mao’s rule, when it was impossible to do so from within
China. If additional research is not done soon, through interview surveys and oral histories, a lot of
potential insights and valuable knowledge about the recent socialist past of Chinese society will be lost
forever. An example, drawing upon the speaker’s recent fieldwork, involves interviews on the social
history of a small urban factory, from before the revolution up to the present day. The employees
developed a “moral economy” type of perspective during the socialist era, and it will be shown how their
situations and attitudes of that time help us to understand the worldview that employees still hold today.
Jonathan Unger, a sociologist, is Director of the Contemporary China Centre at the
Australian National University. He edited The China Journal from 1987 through 2005.
His research interests include rural social and political change, social stratification,
family life, education, industrial relations, and associational activity. He has published
more than a dozen books about China, including Education Under Mao: Class and
Competition in Canton Schools (1982); Chen Village Under Mao and Deng
(co-authored with Anita Chan and Richard Madsen, 1992); and, most recently, The
Transformation of Rural China (2002).
