La subasta de la ciudad by Sharon Richards

Build BackgroundHelp children think about ways a community might raise money to buy or build things they need, like a new playground or a swimming pool. Build interest by asking: ¿Alguna vez fueron a una subasta o vieron una en una película o en la televisión? En una subasta, el subastador vende algo a la persona que quiere pagar la mayor cantidad de dinero por ello. Read the title and author and talk about the auction taking place in the illustration. Tell children that this is realistic fi ction, so the characters will act like real people.

Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, noting important ideas and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so that they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions:

Page 2: Explain that this is a story about two boys, Luis and Carlos, who are waiting for their town to build something special for the people who live there. Suggested language: Miren el dibujo de la página 2. ¿Qué dice el cartel que se construirá?

Page 3: Direct children’s attention to the illustration. Explain that this is Luis and Carlos. Luis asks: “¿Cuándo comenzarán a construir la piscina?” ¿Por qué creen que los niños quieren que este proyecto se termine pronto?

Page 5: La ilustración muestra una reunión del pueblo. ¿Cuál es el tema de la reunión?

Page 6: Explain that anyone from the town can speak at a town meeting. Una mujer pregunta: “Por qué no hacemos una subasta? Podemos vender cosas al mejor postor. De ese modo, podemos recaudar dinero para la piscina de la ciudad.” ¿Qué clase de cosas podría vender una ciudad en una subasta?

Ahora, vuelvan al comienzo del cuento para descubrir si al fi nal se construye una piscina en la ciudad de Carlos y Luis.

ReadHave children read La subasta de la ciudad silently while you listen to individual children read. Support their problem solving and fl uency as needed.

Remind children to use the Infer/Predict Strategy to fi gure out more about story parts.

Discuss and Revisit the TextPersonal ResponseInvite children to share their personal responses to the story. Suggested language: Hablen acerca de algo que coleccionan. ¿Creen que alguna vez donarían su colección para recaudar dinero? ¿Por qué sí? ¿Por qué no?

Ways of ThinkingAs you discuss the text, help children understand these points:

Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text

• Everyone wants to see the town pool built, but there’s not enough money in the budget.

• A town meeting decides to have an auction to raise money.

• The children donate their prized collections to the auction, and that helps raise enough money to build the pool.

• Children can have a part in raising money for community projects.

• When their collections were sold, the children proved that they had something that was worth money.

• When individuals work together, they can get something done for the community that benefi ts everyone.

• There is a twist to the ending because the children fi gure out how to get their collections back.

• The language and the plot sound very realistic, the way real people talk and act.

• The author includes details about town government.

Choices for Further Support• Fluency Invite children to choose a passage from the text to act out or use for Reader’s

Theater. Remind them to pay attention to punctuation and to read their lines as naturally as possible.

• Comprehension Based on your observations of the children’s reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind children to go back to the text to support their ideas.

• Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts, using examples from the text. Remind children many words end with the syllable -ción. Examples in the text are atención, colección, and donación. Invite children to suggest other words that end with -ción.

Writing about ReadingCritical ThinkingHave children complete the questions on Hoja reproducible 16.8.

RespondingHave children complete the activities at the back of the book. Use the instruction below as needed to reinforce or extend understanding of the comprehension skill.

Target Comprehension SkillStory Structure

Target Comprehension Skill Remind children that being able to identify setting,

character, and plot can help them to remember where a story takes place, who is in it, and what happens. Model the skill, using a “Think Aloud” like the one below:

Think Aloud

La tabla del cuento en la página 15 tiene un espacio para los “Personajes”. Voy a hacer una lista de las personas más importantes del cuento. Debería incluir a Carlos y Luis porque ayudaron a resolver el problema del cuento. El escenario del cuento ya está en la tabla: “una ciudad”. Ahora, cuando complete los detalles del cuento, diré cómo los niños ayudaron a su ciudad.

Practice the SkillHave children write one sentence that describes an adult character in the story.

Writing Prompt: Thinking Beyond the TextHave children write a response to the prompt on page 6. Remind them that when they think beyond the text, they use what they know and their own experience to think about what happens in the story.

Assessment Prompts• Find the word on page 6 that means someone who makes an offer at an auction.

• Complete this sentence in your own words: The pool project was a success because

Carlos y Luis estaban parados al otro lado de la

cerca de la obra. Tenían su mirada fija en una cinta

amarilla extendida entre cuatro estacas de madera

y meditaban. La cinta marcaba los bordes de la futura

piscina de la ciudad. Del lado exterior de la cerca, un

cartel mostraba un dibujo de la piscina. En el cartel se

leía “Piscina de la ciudad de Jackson. Próximamente”.

Luis preguntó: —¿Cuándo comenzarán a

construir la piscina? ¿Crees que podremos nadar

este verano?

Carlos respondió: —No lo sé.
