Vectors A Weekly Newsletter of the Lubbock Civil Air Patrol Squadron SWR-TX-293

    Edition #18 May 1, 2011

From the CommanderWe had a very productive ES training on Saturday! Not a big turnout, but enoughto keep it manageable. The training focused on UDF (Urban Direction Finding),so participants practiced locating a practice ELT, obtaining and plotting GPScoordinates, shooting azimuths and a few other tasks. Some lessons learned:read email more than once per week, ALWAYS bring pencil and paper to trainingand bring your SQTR if you want a task to be signed off!

During the last senior meeting, Lt Vernon recommended a book entitled OnSilver Wings, by Marianne Verges. This is a story about the Womens Air

Service Pilots (WASPs) of World War II. Its an easy read, and quite honestly, avery good book! I bought it used a hardback in excellent condition - fromAmazon.com for an amazing $1.34 + $3.99 shipping. Capt Maroste had given apresentation on the WASP museum in Sweetwater in preparation for our visit tothe museum on 28 May, so this book will give some background prior to the visit. An Ops Plan and request for a mission number has been submitted to TexasWing for 3 - 4 June so that we may conduct training as a mission in conjunctionwith the Slaton Airshow. If approved, this would be a USAF funded ground teamexercise.

Remember, ALL ES qualified personnel and trainees need to bring their 24 hour

packs for inspection. You wont be whacked on the head for not havingeverything, as this is an opportunity to learn what you are lacking, or what maybe unnecessary. The purpose is to help all of us be prepared to respond whennotified to do so.

From the Deputy Commander of CadetsIt is my sad duty to report that the New Mexico Encampment has cancelled their 2011Leadership Lab for returning cadets. At this time I don't know a reason, but for those ofyou wanting to go a second time it doesn't look good. Nothing has changed for thosegoing for the first time to New Mexico. The Texas Encampment has stopped acceptingapplications, but other states may have openings if you want to travel a bit.On a good note I am glad to report that Cadet Crabb has successfully taken and passedtests on the new online cadet testing system, making him the first cadet in our squadronto do so. Also, I learned that every test, including the Mitchell has a new drill portion tothe exam. Apparently, no matter what your rank, you must be able to either drill or bedrilled. New challenges for our program. As always I know we can adjust the inputs tocompensate for this. No turbulence is expected . . .

    PROMOTION!

    Congratulations!C/2Lt Johnson

    on your Mitchell Award

Congrats to Everyone that picked up an Achievement Award for Wreaths AcrossAmerica
