Personal Development Plan

The tables below will help you to go through three steps to arrive at such a plan:

Step 1 -The requirements of your current and/or future role

Step 2 - Identify your strengths and development areas

Step 3 - Build up a SMART action plan to bring about change and development

Step 1- The requirements of my role

Start by thinking about your role and the elements of your job that require you to work. Depending on your situation, you may wish to concentrate on your current role or perhaps on a future anticipated role if this has a greater international context. For example:

- What are the key relationships that will be important for success in this role?

- What will be the key tasks that you will be performing?

- What additional knowledge and understanding will you need?

- With whom, and how will you mostly be communicating?

- How clearly wi l l your goals be defined?

- What personal pressures will this role impose on you?

In the light of your answers to these questions complete the table below:

To fulfill the requirements of my role I need to:

1.

2.

3.

Robert Taylor

Communicate with my Teacher, in order to verify that I am following instruction correctly. I must make sure that I am doing the right task and to a suitable level of skill for my target grade. If I communicate with my teacher I will be able to achieve a better grade as they will be able to tell me where I can improve so that I am able to correct any mistakes that I have made.

Be Punctual, making sure to get my coursework in by the deadline. I will have to work at a diligent speed in order to be able to finish my tasks within the time allocated by my instructor. If I am able to finish my task within the deadline time then I can begin to start the next task, this will allow me to get further ahead in the coursework and allowing me to produce higher quality work.

Evaluate my own work, this will allow me to correct any mistakes such as misspellings or grammar issues before I deliver the work to my teacher. I can proof read my own work so that it is of a better standard and quality.

Step 1- The requirements of my role

Personal Development Plan

Area of Strength Ways to use it more extensively1. Formal and informal communication to a select

audience. I can use this strength to create more purposeful documents involving the written communication to a target audience.

2. Creation of house styles and custom logos. I will be able to make documents seem more professional if I use the same styles and fonts on my work.

3. Verbal communication presentation to an audience. I am able to talk to an audience with confidence and speak about a specified subject area in detail. I can communicate the necessary information from a presentation I created to a group of people.

Area for development Ways to address it

1. Poor understanding of the different communicative techniques.

Learn the different types of communication and how they affect different people.

2. Occasional misspelling of words. Have spell checking software that will automatically correct any mistakes made in my text.

3. Improper use of grammar in places causing some incomprehensible language.

Make sure that I proof read my work meticulously to alert me of any errors that I have made.

Step 3- A SMART Action Plan

Working with the areas you have selected in Step 2, identify the specific actions you are going to take to bring about change and development for yourself. The plan you make should be a SMART plan, i.e.

1 SpecificIs your goal well-defined? Avoid setting unclear or vague objectives; instead be as precise as possible.

Instead of : "To listen more"Make it specific: "To use the next meeting of the European marketing managers as an opportunity toPractice listening b e h a v i o r s and to reinforce this by writing a detailed minute of the meeting"

2 MeasurableBe clear how you will recognize when you have achieved your goal. Using numbers, dates and times is one way to represent clear objectives.

Instead of : "To find out about South Africa"Make it measurable: "To use the internet and the local library to identify and read key references andMake notes on the history, economy, and politics of South Africa. This to be completed b y the end of next month."

3 AttainableSetting yourself unrealistic goals will only end in disappointment. Make your goals challenging, but attainable.

Instead of : "Learn German by Christmas"Make it attainable: "Register with a language school and attend classes to learn German on a weeklybasis for the next 12 months. Then review progress and set new goals"

4 RelevantEnsure that any development actions that you plan are directly relevant to the international context tha tyou are currently, or will be, operating in. Test them for relevance against the answers you gave in Step1 above.

5 Time-boundSet a time scale for completion of each goal. Even if you have to review this as you progress, it will helpto keep you motivated.

Now use the table on the following page to finalize an action plan in three areas.

Personal Development Plan ( PDP) During My Coursework

Development Objective Have I used Specific Actions? Have the Blockers been removed

Am I Using Any Support Have I Progressed at Achieving My Development Goal?

Improve the literacy in my essay technique.

I was able to successfully use more advanced words in my essay writing.

By proof reading all my documents, I was able to edit out any mistakes that were made in the production of that assignment.

I got my parents to look through the assignment after I have edited any mistakes out.

I have been able to spot and correct any misspellings throughout all my documents.

Stand in front of an audience with confidence.

I will have to perform a presentation about a specific subject in front of my peers and teacher.

I was able to become more confident by presenting my PowerPoint to friends/family.

I Had to ask my friends and family to take the time to listen to my presentation and then give me feedback.

I become a-lot more confident by presenting to my friends and it allowed me to rehearse my speech and communication towards my peers and teacher.

Make sure that my house styles are consistent.

I will be making professional business forms for a fake company, including a business letter, e-mail, flyer, business leaflet and an Invoice.

I wasn’t able to remove this blocker as it I hadn’t created the final documents at the time.

Support wasn’t required at this time in development.

I didn’t make any immediate or visible progress towards my target goal.

Development Objective What Actions Did I Undertake?

What support did I require? Did I achieve my Development Objective?

Improve the literacy in my essay technique.

I used advanced literature as-well as spelling, grammar and punctuation checks.

I was able to reduce the amount of illiteracy in my work by checking my SPAG.

Asked both my family and my teacher to check my work for mistakes.

I was able to achieve my development goal.

Stand in front of an audience with confidence.

I practiced my presentation in front of friends and family.

I had to become outgoing and use appropriate tone of voice so that people would appreciate my presentation better.

I needed to ask my friends and family to listen to my presentation.

I was able to perform my Presentation in front of my audience with confidence.

Make sure that my house styles are consistent.

I created a house style to keep consistent throughout all my business forms.

I would have to become more organised and keep a track of all my documents and their intended content.

I used my own initiative to complete the work and as a result didn’t receive any assistance.

I was able to create extremely professional work with appropriate formats and house styles consistent throughout all the necessary documents.
