nacionalidades (saharauis, brasileños, chinos, bolivianos, peruanos, argelinos, rusos...) y
residencia a nuestra localidad.
áreas de inglés e Historia y Geografía sobre las migraciones y persecuciones religiosas;
bajo el nombre “Life by the Water”.
− Teleformación: Aulas virtuales, plataformas, formación on line, etc.
− Formación permanente: doctorados, nuevas carreras, masters, etc.
− Formación en TIC, derivada del Proyecto TIC 2.0
− Licencias por estudios
− Formación en Programas Europeos, participación en iniciativas Comenius, Erasmus y
similares.
oportuno.
16
Respecto a promoción y titulación.
Además, he comprobado cómo se avisa

Falta
grave de hábitos de estudio. Conducta agresiva. Desmotivación total.

progresa poco a poco.

2. UNIDAD DIDÁCTICA
Let’s go to the Olympics!
DIDACTIC UNIT

Máster Universitario en Formación del Profesorado de Secundaria Obligatoria y
Bachillerato, Formación Profesional y Enseñanza de Idiomas
Especialidad: Lengua Extranjera (inglés)
Curso 2013/14

2.1 INTRODUCCIÓN
2.1.1 CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS
This didactic unit has been created to be implemented to a group from year 7 in
Rodrigo Caro Secondary School, which is situated in the centre of Coria del Río, at the
southwest of Seville. This institution is an ICT and bilingual one. However, only part of
the students belongs to bilingual groups. In the case of the target group of this didactic
unit, the students belong to two other different groups, but whilst their bilingual
classmates gather in one classroom, these former ones gather in another for the main
subjects and English classes.
This target group is composed of 31 students, half of them born in 2001 –they
are 13 years old, but another half was born in previous years, what means they are retaking
the year. This gives an idea of how diverse the class is, not only in terms of age, but effort
or motivation. Although it is true that some of the repeater students are doing very well,
and seem to be working hard, others are usually expelled, or don’t pay attention in class
and lack many of the skills, sharply lessening the level of the class. Besides, there is also
a clear case of absence, since the student has never attended the class, and others near-
absence cases in which students rarely go to class and when they do, they just sit and even
try to distract their classmates.
Moreover there are also some nationality and ethnic differences among the
students. There is a boy from Latin America, who has had certain difficulties adapting to
the environment and his mates, although he seems to have made a huge progress, since
he is starting to talk to some of their mates and even studying from time to time, although
he is quite shy and does not usually like speaking in class. Apart from him, there are also
students who do not usually study or do the activities, and some who, moreover, have
deficiencies and therefore cannot follow the rest of their mates.
In spite of all this, most of the rest of students are average students, who normally
do what they are asked to and usually pass the exams. In fact, there are also some
dedicated students who highlight for their marks and work. Among these, there is a girl
who was advanced one year, and whose level of English, in fact, is quite good. I have
noticed that she usually knows most of what is explained in class or most of the answers
25
to the activities they are asked to do, so she gets kind of anxious when her mates take
more time to answer to something they have been asked.
Even though it is a considerably diverse group, the teacher of English –that is
my advisor, has been able to build strong relationships among all of them, based on
respect and friendship, what has contributed to a great environment within the classroom.
Generally, students seem to like the classes and so they pay attention, laugh and usually
participate voluntarily in the activities carried out. Although there are some who do not
even open their books and just sit, looking everywhere but the teacher. Even though there
are good students, their level of English is quite low in most of the cases.
2.1.2 JUSTIFICATION
As I previously said, this didactic unit has been elaborated for a group of thirty
one year 7 students. One characteristic to be highlighted in this case is that most of them
are barely motivated, not only regarding English class, but classes in general. Some of
them have been expelled during most part of their primary school years and others simply
do not want to study or pay attention, and this influences not only their learning, but their
mates’. Besides, as I said above, although the school is a bilingual institution, students in
this class are not. They belong to two different groups who are gathered together for
English classes, and some others such as Spanish Language and Literature, and Maths.
Therefore, their level of English is low and in some of the cases I also mentioned
previously, almost none.
However, I think the topics we will be dealing with in this unit will help them,
at least to motivate themselves and engage in the activities. Regarding these, I have
prepared a great variety of them. I have also tried to create activities which are appealing
to them and modify some of the topics in a way they will get interested. For some of the
activities, I have selected articles to read, or videos to watch, but all of them will be
dealing with famous sportspeople or athletes who I know they like.
Moreover, taking into account that most of the students are girls and that this
topic may be delicate in that sense, I have chosen some topics also dealing with female
athletes and not only male ones. This will not only help them to also be interested in what
we are doing, but will allow me to promote respect and tolerance, and to eliminate
stereotypes or prejudices they may have. This would be one of the main objectives of the
unit. Other purposes will be enabling the students to learn English in an enjoyable way,
using the language to communicate their main interests and opinions regarding the topic
26
and motivate all of them to keep trying and not to abandon. In fact, I will be promoting
oral communication all the time, since I will be speaking English to them and trying to
make them speak too.
I see no better way to achieve these aims than dealing with cross-cultural topics
such as particular stories about women in the arena of sports, or cultural worldwide
competitions, which gather together people from many different nationalities, no matter
their bodies, skin colour or skills, such as the Olympics –and Paralympics, movies and
videos dealing with famous athletes, and sports, and at the same time promoting healthy
life. The selection of topics therefore has been selected not only because of the interest it
may raise, but also to build up a sense of the awareness and principles of equality,
tolerance and respect to others, no matter their nationalities, or physical appearance.
The topic of this unit coincides with that on the book. According to the Didactic
Course Plan of the English Department, units will follow the scheme of the book,
although lessons will not be so accurate in that sense, and some extra material and
activities will be often implemented in class. In the case of this didactic unit, I have
created most of the activities and tasks we are going to carry out, although I have also
taken some of the activities from the book, adapting them to be able to accomplish the
objectives of the unit.
2.2 LEGAL FRAMEWORK

2.6 TIMING
This didactic unit has been elaborated to be implemented within a 13-session
period during the beginning of third trimester. The English language department at that
school follows a system of continuous evaluation, so although this didactic unit will be
implemented during the third semester, the results in terms of evaluation and assessment
will be linked to those of previous ones.
Lessons at the school are normally 60 minutes long, although classes end 5
minutes earlier, since students have to move to another classroom. Thus, the arrangement
of lessons and activities in this unit will follow that pattern, being timing and activity
sequencing always open and flexible, since they will depend on the specific necessities
of students in each moment, considering that the process is learner-centred. However, as
a general norm, the arrangement of sessions will be as follows:
Warm-up activities (from 5 to 10 minutes)
Learning activities (from 30 to 40 minutes)
Closure activities (from 5 to 10 minutes)
Anyway, within each didactic unit, time will be arranged as pertinent and it will
be also specified in each specific case. (See annex 1)
2.7 ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
The assessment of students will measure whether they achieve the objectives of
this unit or not, and this will be determined in accordance with four parameters –exams,
skills, group work, and attitude. Therefore assessment will be based on their ability to:
Write short texts about different topics.
Work in pairs and groups, making decisions and carrying out tasks
effectively.
Read texts aloud.
Know how to use the modals must and can in all their forms.
Listen to audios and videos, being able to work on them.
Do the exercises they are set with.
Speak and write at least short sentences and give opinions.
46
Talk in English at least to say basic things.
2.8 CROSS-CURRICULAR TOPICS AND VALUES EDUCATION
The main topic of this unit will be Sports, although it will be linked to other
fields such as Biology or General Knowledge and with it, the English language and
grammar. The topic of the unit has been expanded to deal not just with sports as
vocabulary-based, but to be able to include those other themes within this broad field. To
deal with those topics, I have created different kinds of activities such as movies,
sportswomen –apart from male athletes, texts and a webquest on Paralympics and
Olympics, and some other videos.
In terms of values, this unit aims to promote good behaviour, through the
acquisition of other values such as tolerance, respect, the elimination of possible
prejudices such as discrimination of different nationalities or bodies, or either sexist or
homophobic attitudes, and cooperation. Therefore, this unit interacts with core areas of
CSE such as Language in the first place, and Biology.
2.9 METHODOLOGY
Lessons in this unit will be mainly task-based and every lesson will include a
warm-up activity, in which we will revise what we did during the previous day or connect
it to other session in some way. As a general norm, every lesson will aim to the practice
of the four skills –listening, speaking, writing, and reading, one way or another. The tasks
we will carry out during the sessions also aim to fulfil or improve most of the eight
necessary competences. Therefore, the implementation of one specific methodology or
another will be in relation with the nature of each activity.
Regarding methodology, different teaching methods have been taken into
account for the elaboration of this didactic unit, since it would be practically impossible
to focus on one single one, due to the great heterogeneity of the group. Therefore, the
techniques to apply during the teaching of this unit will consist of a mixture of the seven
existing methods and it will include some aspects from each one –traditional method,
direct, audio oral, suggestopedia, movement, silent and communicative approach.
With reference to the traditional method, the teacher will make use of
explanations about the rules of the main grammar points of this unit, such as modals and
adverbs, and will encourage students to memorize them and the vocabulary so that they
47
can carry out the activities they will be given. Some of the activities based on this method
are those where they have to write sentences using these rules, or those of drilling, we
will constantly do to help them memorize.
With regard to the direct method, some activities promoting inductive learning
in which they will practise the four skills have been prepared. In these, students will have
to relate objects or images with rules and lexicon and some examples of activities are the
gallery walk exercise and the posters-making of the first session. Everyday language will
be promoted in many situations as well, since students will have to talk about habits and
routines, or attitudes and skills regarding the practise of sport. For these activities, they
will be the only participants and the teacher will become an advisor.
At the same time, the teacher will promote students interaction throughout the
sessions, involving students in the correction of every kind of activities, as well as peers,
implementing the communicative approach in several situations, as well as the silent
method, since it will be students who correct as far as possible. Explanations related to
activities will be carried out in English, promoting listening and oral skills by means of
techniques such as question-answer or the reading of texts adapted to their level and
further questions about them. Moreover, the teacher will serve himself of some tools and
power point presentations with pictures to raise interest among the students.
In relation to the audio-oral method, both listening and pronunciation of the
different elements of the unit –grammar and vocabulary points will be pursued.
Repetitions will be also a recurrent technique throughout the whole unit since the creation
of the posters during the first session, since students will have to take into account these
norms and rules and make use of them for class talk daily.
These activities as a whole, and some others, will help the students to gain self-
confidence and to engage in the sessions willingly, showing a positive point of view
towards class work, since they are not only different kinds of activities, but also adapted
to different learning strategies that will help the diverse necessities and learning of the
students. This will also promote the use of suggestopedia, considered by Lozanov as one
of the most effective teaching methods.
The different reading and listening activities in which students will have to read
aloud or speak, as well as the teacher’s explanations will also contribute to the use of this
particular method. At the same time, the teacher’s constant questioning encouraging the
students to give opinions and suggestions is other characteristic this method defends.
Although the texts with which we will work are not too long, since they have been adapted
48
to the students’ level, they will be extensive however, considering their low level. Work
group will be promoted as well through the making of the activities through the unit,
allowing students to interact among them, encouraging their autonomy.
The fact that the unit main topic is Sports has helped to the creation and
adaptation of activities to students, being this the case of the videos and texts dealing with
their favourite sportspeople, such as Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi. This way, oral
communication will be also one of the main key components of the sessions, always
taking into account their level, and therefore activities not being highly demanding, but
focused in communication.
With regard to others methods, movement method will be implied through the
implementation of imitation activities, as the one in session 4. This method will be also
promoted by the repetition activities students will carry out when learning to pronounce,
and the rest of activities which advocate for this kind of technique. At the same time,
other peculiarity of this method will be constantly employed, since as one of the main
points of this unit will be the use of modals, students will regularly deal with orders and
mandates.
As one of the main objectives of this didactic unit is to motivate the students,
since most of them are notoriously lacking this attitude, the topics and activities have
been carefully selected and adapted to them. Moreover, with the purpose of unifying the
disproportionate level of the class, students will be mostly working in groups or pairs. As
you may see in the section dedicated to didactic units, students will be collocated in
groups and pairs by means of games and although it gives the impression it occurs
randomly, I will be controlling where to place each of them.
Apart from this, and according to the titles of each didactic unit, I will bring
something related to the topic of each day (henceforth “tool”), so that I can give it to them
to engage them on the activities and work and make them be willing to do so, at least for
getting the tool. (For more information, see didactic units, annex 1)
Regarding group work, I will give them the opportunity to organize themselves
and decide who is going to be in charge of each function within the group as long as this
method works. In case of any trouble with that decision-making, I will implement the
method of numbered heads and I will form the groups and roles myself. Either case, I will
keep a diary so that I can note down who does what each day, aiming to promote
collaborative work, and equality of opportunities. For instance, if one day a particular
student is in charge of writing, next day s/he will have to play another role.
49
In terms of teacher talk, classes will be taught mainly in English, although I will
do it in a simple way, with basic language and at a slow pace, and I will always try to use
the main grammar points of the unit when I talk. Regarding explanations of main topics
and activities, students will be told what to do in English, although I will switch to Spanish
right afterwards, and I will explain it again.
With this unit and these tasks, I am trying to make them speak English all the
time, but with that I do not intend to make them engage in long conversations, since they
cannot do that, I just try to make them answer and talk by means of short and simple
sentences or single words, but in English. I would like to insist on this, since I will be
saying we will talk in English during the whole description of the didactic units, but with
English, I will be referring to short sentences and simple questions, since their level is
quite low.
In terms of feedback, as what I am trying with this didactic unit is to motivate
students and to make them speak, and work, I will not correct them directly when they
make a mistake. In fact, as you can see in annex 1, in the sections “specifications”, it will
be the own students who will correct their mates sometimes. The rest of the times, I will
correct them all afterwards, explaining their general mistakes and how to solve them, but
without pointing at anyone. In case I need to talk to someone in particular, I will do it at
the end of the class or when they are doing any other activity. Regarding their
performance during reading aloud activities or talking, I will never correct them, unless
there is a very particular or big mistake, since I do not want them to be afraid or speaking,
and they do not usually do it.
As I previously said, most of the activities have been created specifically for
them and, although I have tried to include as much realia as possible, I have had to adapt
most of the materials. Anyway, these materials and tasks have been created on purpose,
to be able to achieve most of the goals this didactic unit pursues. Anyway, the methods
implemented in each particular session will be defined and described in the description
of didactic units (see annex 1).
Regarding the classroom and its layout, except from the language laboratory, the
classroom is quite big and the tables and chairs are lightweight so will be always arrange
them in form of U, so that I can be in the middle for the explanations and assessment and
every time they have to work in groups or in pairs, they will just have to move their chairs
and sit ones in front of the others. With respect to this, I am sure there will not be any
problem, since they usually sit with one another and almost never in the same seat.

(For more information, see didactic units, annex 1)
2.10 EVALUATION
Through the implementation of this didactic unit, there will be every kind of
evaluation, since everything they do will be evaluated in some way. As was mentioned
before, evaluation will be based on the assessment of the four parameters which will be
considered –exams, skills, group work, and attitude, although there will be an extra
parameter, which will help the students to raise their final marks in case they do it. This
will consist of an extra 10 % in their final mark, which will be based on a diary students
will have to write and the positives I will be giving to them in case they participate (see
below). There will be a total of 4 exams –a vocabulary test, a unit exam, a listening test,
and an oral exam, although the last one will be voluntary. Moreover, through their class
work and some at home, I will also evaluate their reading and writing skills respectively.
Until the last unit, oral exams used to be compulsory, but students never prepared
it and they always complained. Therefore, teachers decided to change it to optional, and
decided it would just serve to improve their marks. Since that moment on, everyone has
studied for it and many of them even passed it. Then, class work and activities, as well as
extra practice sheets and notebook will count as a 15% of the final mark. Group work will
count as a 10%, skills will be a 30% of the mark, and exams a 45%.
Vocabulary and unit exam will be written. (See annex 2) For the listening, I will
play an audio and students will have to fill gaps. For the listening, I will play the audio
twice, playing it sentence by sentence the second time, and repeating it after the speaker
has finished. Once they have listened to the whole audio, and finished the test, I will play
it again –without stopping.
Attitude will be measured throughout the whole period –through the activities I
will have to correct, and through class work. Moreover, they will have to create a project,
which will be the one that will serve for the vocabulary exam afterwards. Even if they do
not want to take the test, they will have to do the project. Regarding group work, I will
evaluate them through observation and results. Finally, the last day of class, I will ask
them for their notebooks and workbooks and I will also correct them, as I did with their
extra practice sheets –this will compose the last parameter.
Apart from these percentages, thinking of those who may have difficulties to
pass, although it will be applied to everyone, I have included an extra 10 % on their
51
evaluation possibilities, which will consist of a diary-making, for which they will have to
write everyday what we did during the class and which will be handed in to me the day
after the final exam. This work will be voluntary, but I think is a good idea to tell them it
will give them some extra point for their final mark, since I think they will motivate and
work on it. This way, I will also be able to assess their writing skills once I correct the
diaries. Apart from the diary, students will have the opportunity to gain positive marks,
which will also contribute to get this extra 10%. I will also give them negative marks
when they do not want to do something, and I will inform them of this fact, but it will
never rest anything from their marks.
The table below shows all these parameters, what they are composed of and the
percentages of each:

2.11 CATERING FOR DIVERSITY:
As I said at the beginning of this unit, our target group is very diverse, not only
in terms of level of English or motivation, but also in terms of strategies to learn, as I have
observed during the lessons I have attended. For that purpose, I have selected a variety of
different activities, which will help all of them to carry on and participate in some way.
As I specified in the section devoted to Methodology, students will be working
in groups and pairs most of the time, to enable those who do not want to work to reflect,
and engage in the activities, as they see how their mates work and how if he does not,
their mates will be harmed. In that sense, group or pair work will also help them to do
what is requested, since their mates will tell them so.
Moreover, some extra material has been prepared for those who need to
reinforce, as well as for fast finishers, for which a project has been created: to make up a
sport, although it will be voluntary, since they will also be able to work on some extra
activities or write their diary entries while their mates finish what they are doing. Those
who finish earlier than their mates therefore will be able to choose among some different
tasks, but in case they choose to do the project, they will have to work individually. At
the end of the unit, the projects will be collected and will count for the evaluation as well.
Besides, as you can see in annex 2.13, there is also an extension sheet, which will be
given to those fast-finishers in case they end the project and need more material.
Diversity has also be taken into account when setting the parameters for
assessment and evaluation. Since there is not one student similar to other, and their levels
are so different, I will take into account everything they do during the unit and their effort
will always considered positively. Evaluation will not be based only on exams, but it will
contemplate class and homework, extra work, attitudes towards each activity and class,
and participation.
2.12 MATERIAL AND DIDACTIC RESOURCES:
The implementation of this didactic unit encourages the use of different didactic
resources. Although I have created my own material, we will also use some activities
from the book, which I have adapted myself, and the workbook –for the extra material
set, in some occasions. Since students had to buy a set of photocopies at the beginning of
the year –which includes extra practice and vocabulary sheets for each unit, I will have
53
to use them as well. Materials therefore will be both paper and digital based. Paper-based
material will include the book, the workbook, some worksheets and their notebooks, as
well as cardboard sheets in the case of the project, the gallery art activity and the posters
activity of the first day. Digital-based material will include computers and laptops, the
digital board, a webquest, videos, audios, and power point presentations.
2.13 REMEDIAL WORK
In case a student fails to achieve the objectives of this unit, as I previously said, there will
be a set of extra material available, which will be offered to her or him, to do at home.
(See annex 2.12) To ensure the students achieve the objectives of this unit through this
work, the extra material will consist of a set of exercises through which they will have to
work on texts, activities in which they will be dealing with the vocabulary of the unit,
modals must and can and adverbs of manner and degree.
2.14 DIDACTIC UNIT AND TEACHER ASSESSMENT
During the implementation of this didactic unit, I will keep a diary where I will
be noting down how the class went, how I felt and my impressions about the lesson and
students’ response to it, both in general and with respect to each activity, so that I can
value both the didactic unit and my teaching skills.
For this last purpose, an evaluation sheet will be also handed in to the students
once they finish their unit exams, and it will contain an anonymous questionnaire where
they will be asked some questions about their impressions about the sessions and the
teacher. (See Annex 3.5)
54
2.15 ANNEX 1. DIDACTIC UNITS
2.15.1 DIDACTIC UNIT #1: LET’S DO IT!
Warm-up (10’)
The warm-up of this first session will be different to the rest since I will devote
it to introduce the topic and main English points of the didactic unit, as well as the
requirements, methodology and assessment, and the criteria for the evaluation of the unit.
Finally, students will be given a timetable with the unit lessons and sessions specified on
it, as well as information about the contents and activities designed for each session. Thus,
although warm-up activities will usually last approximately 5 minutes, this specifically
will take 10’.
Pre-task (15’)
During this task, I will explain the rules of must and can, their formation and
syntactic order, as well as their pronunciation. Students are used to the teacher writing
brief schemes on the blackboard with the rules about the grammar points they are seeing.
Thus, I will also do it when explaining the formation of must and can and their respective
negative and interrogative forms. Afterwards, I will play an audio in which they will be
told how to pronounce must and its negative form, as well as can, depending on if it
appears in a short answer or a normal sentence, and its negative form.
Task (20’)
For the main task, students will have to make posters on which they will write
some of the rules or things we all must or mustn’t and can or can’t do in the classroom.
In order to do so, I will ask the students to tell me things that we can or can’t and must or
must do in the class –in English. I will be writing the sentences they tell me on the
blackboard as they do so –but I will write them in Spanish. Afterwards, I will divide the
class in two halves, and ask the students in one of them to tell me a number from 1 to the
number of sentences written on the blackboard –since there are 30 students, I intend to
write 15 sentences on the blackboard, but it will depend on the number of students
attending the class that day.
That way, I will assign one sentence to each of them. Later on, I will ascribe a
number to each student in the other half of the class. According to the numbers they have
been appointed, they will have to work in pairs for the activity. Once the pairs have been
settled on, I will hand some cardboards in which they will have to write the sentences
55
they have been designated with and make a drawing which represent the meaning of the
sentence. I will explain to them that both the drawing and the sentence must be big
enough, since we are going to hand the cardboards on the wall afterwards, so that they
speak English during next sessions.
Post-task (5’)
For the post-task, students will show their mates what they have made and the
rest will try to correct any mistake they made. For this purpose, I will call the pairs to the
front of the class in a numerical order from 1 to 15 –in case there were 15 sentences.
Closure (5’)
For the closure of the session, I will give the students some tape so that they can
stick the posters on the walls. After they have finished, I will tell remind them they have
to bring the Vocabulary sheet for the next class.
Specifications:
I will provide the cardboards and the markers for the elaboration of the posters, and
will have some spare cardboards to give them in case they do something wrong and
they need another one.
During the warm-up and the pre-task, I will be speaking Spanish, since I want
everything to be understood clearly and they do not usually speak English in class,
just the teacher when the class starts, when she corrects and asks the students about
something. However, as I previously said, the students will have to speak in English
at least for the basic. (See above)
The purpose of this task –or lesson, is that they learn the main rules related to proper
behaviour in the classroom –you must study, you must be quiet during explanations,
etc., at the same time they create something that is going be useful for them for the
rest of the unit, since I intend them to speak in English, at least to express the main
things they will probably want to –i.e. Can you explain it again?, Can you move? I
can’t see the blackboard…
Although it will seem I am putting them in pairs randomly, I will not do it so. I intend
to gather those who are less motivated with those who work hard so that the last ones
influence the others in some way. These last ones usually finish earlier and usually do
things right, so in some way I will balance the group.
56
With this session, I have tried to make them practice the four skills, i.e. listening to
the pronunciation of the main grammar points, writing –what I write on the
blackboard and their sentences, speaking –since they will have to tell me the sentences
orally, and reading –what I write on the blackboard.
57
2.15.2 DIDACTIC UNIT #2: LET’S WATCH SPORT!
Warm-up (5’)
To connect what we did the day before to this lesson, I will ask the students to
tell me about the rules for the use of modals can and must, and about their collocation
within a sentence and meaning. As they tell me so, I will write it on the blackboard.
Pre-task (10’)
As they were told at the end of the previous session, this didactic unit will deal
with the vocabulary of the unit –Sports. To start with, I will tell them to have a look at
the vocabulary sheets they should have brought and to try to find as many Spanish terms
–equivalent to the ones in English they have got, as they can.
Task (20’)
Up to now, they have usually done this task either at home looking the terms up
in a dictionary, or in class with the help of the teacher. But today, we will work with a
video. (See CD1) In the video, they will be presented with the different sports we will be
dealing with during this unit, as well as the vocabulary we will work with. I have created
the video and subtitled it so that the students can see something –i.e. a tool, an action, a
person, and its name in English will appear on the screen. This way, they will have to
deduce what does the word refers to, and write it on their sheet in Spanish –next to its
equivalent in English.
As I previously said, the students bought the vocabulary sheet at the beginning
of the course and so the vocabulary that appears on it is the same that appears on their
book. (See annex 2.1) So, as I have included some extra vocabulary –which will help the
students to do all the activities I have planned for the rest of this didactic unit, I will hand
out another sheet to each of the students, so that they can note down the rest of the
vocabulary.
Post-task (15’)
After working on the vocabulary sheets, I will ask the students to exchange their
papers and we will correct what the students have done all together. I will ask the students
what each word means and telling them to correct the sheets they have been ascribed –
when necessary. In case I ask someone and s/he does not know the answer or s/he is
wrong, I will ask the rest. I will not say the right one unless no one knows it.
58
Closure (5’)
To finish, I will collect the vocabulary sheets they have been working on, I will
give them back to their owners and I will ask them to do the rest of the sheet at home.
Later on, I will thank them for their work and I will say good-bye.
Specifications:
I will take some copies of the vocabulary sheets, so that I can provide the students
with them in case they forget theirs at home, and to bring it done for next day.
As I said in the previous didactic unit, the students will have to speak in English, at
least when they want to express basic things. So, for instance, if while we are watching
the video someone want me to stop it, s/he will have to tell me so in English.
Regarding the explanation of the main task, I will also say it in English, although I
will repeat it in Spanish afterwards.
As we will follow the video, they will be no fast-finishers in this lesson.
As with the rest of lessons, I have tried to make them practice the four skills. They
will have to listen and watch the video, and they will have to work on their vocabulary
sheets as to write the glossary.
The main objective of this unit is to motivate all of them. I think this activity will be
very appealing for them, since the video shows most of their favourite athletes, as
well as part of a movie, which is very funny and children usually like it –at the same
time they learn the vocabulary.
59
2.15.3 DIDACTIC UNIT #3: LET’S PLAY BASKETBALL!
Warm-up: (5’)
This session will start with a brainstorming of the vocabulary we learnt
yesterday. I will ask the students to tell me every word they can remember and I will be
writing them on the blackboard. Afterwards, I will play an audio with the pronunciation
of the names of the main sports we saw the previous day. (See annex 2.2)
Pre-task (15’)
This pre-task will be different to the rest, since it will be composed of two
activities. Firstly, we will do exercise number 3, through which I will explain the meaning
and differences of the verbs do, play, and go –the three verbs related to practising sports.
After explaining to them, we will all together do what the exercise requires on the digital
board. (See annex 2.2)
Right afterwards, we will do exercise number 5, on the same page, in which they
will be told about the most common verbs which define the actions made in the sports.
They will have to listen to the audio, and later on, repeat, as well as match the verbs with
the images in exercise 1. However, there will be some variation in the activity, since I
will tell them to explain the verbs in terms of how, what, or where, so that they can so use
what they have just been explained in exercise 3 –i.e. to play basketball, you throw a ball;
you swim moving your hands and feet; or you play tennis in a tennis court. (See annex
2.2)
Task (20’)
The last fragment of the video we saw the previous day, which belongs to the
movie “Space Jam”, includes some parts in which the basketball players break the rules
of the sport. I will play this last piece again and tell them to pay attention to what the
players do. (See CD1) Later on, the students will be asked to reflect upon it, and to write
things that you can or can’t, and must or mustn’t do during a basketball match. For this
task, they will have to work in pairs. They will be using most of the verbs we saw in
exercise 5 –during the pre-task, so they will barely need other verbs to do the activity.
60
Post-task (10’)
Afterwards, students will have to read their sentences aloud, so that the rest can
listen to what their mates did, contribute with different ideas, or debate in case the former
ones said something they do not agree with. To encourage them to participate, I will be
asking questions, such as do you all agree? why? With this, I expect them to say at least
“yes, I do”, and to contribute reading their sentences. I do not expect them to open a
discussion, but just to say something in English.
Closure (5’)
To finish the session, I will collect what they have written, as well as the
vocabulary sheets on which they should have worked at home, so that I can correct them
at home and give them back the next day. I will later on thank them for their work, and
say good-bye.
Specifications:
I will be usually collecting everything they write in class, since part of their mark will
depend on the diary, so that I can see if there has been any progress during the unit
and assess it, comparing with the diary.
For the pairs, I will again try to gather those who are less motivated with those who
are more and who usually work without any effort, so that the former ones learn from
the others. Anyway, if some of the pair finish faster, as difference on time with respect
to the others will not be much, they can work on their diaries and complete it with
what we have done in class today. Still, as I will always have with me the set of extra
material and activities, if they want to do any other activity, they will just have to ask
me and I will give something to them.
Again, I have tried to make them practice the four skills upon which they will be
evaluated at the end of the unit.
As one of the main objectives of this unit is to motivate them, with this session, that
is one of the aims, and that is why I am making them working on the movie, which is
quite funny and amusing for them, at the same time they learn.
The tool today will be a small basketball and a basket, so that every time a student
wants to speak they will have to score. This way, they will get motivated.
61
2.15.4 DIDACTIC UNIT #4: LET’S PRACTISE SPORT!
Warm-up activity (5’)
Today, as a way to connect what we did in the previous session, I will start the
class with a small game. I will say the verbs we saw yesterday and they will have to mimic
the movement. For instance, if I say: (you must) kick the ball, they will have to pretend
they are playing football, etc. If they show themselves engaged in the game, I will take
the opportunity to ask some of them to play my role and they will be the ones commanding
and the rest and I will do the movements.
Pre-task (10 minutes)
For this activity, I will randomly hand some cards out, which will contain some
pictures related to some of the sports we have been seeing, as well as others containing
the names of those pictures. Once they have the cards, I will tell those who have got the
cards with pictures on them to get up and look for their partners –those with the name of
the objects on the pictures, and to sit together. So, those students with the images will
have to go around the class asking their mates “Who has got the name…?” and those with
the names will answer. (See annex 2.3)
My intention with this activity is to form groups of about five people –depending
on the number of students who attend the lesson that day, to later on, work on the main
task. For this task to not be a total mess, I will tell the students to get up in groups of four
people, and once they have all found their partners, they will sit and another group of four
will get up to look for their mates. Once they all have got their partners, I will tell them
to sit in groups according to the sport their cards are related to. In the end, there will be
six groups of five people –again, depending on the number of students, and we will
proceed to do the main task. Taking into account that some of them do not come to the
class, I will arrange the groups differently –in terms of components.
Task (25’)
Already in groups, I will tell them to write a short text about the sport the words
and the images they have on the cards refer to. As the activity will be carried out in group,
each of them will have to say, at least, one sentence or idea about what they can write.
These will have to include everything we have seen related to each specific sports –i.e.
vocabulary regarding names of the sport and tools and verbs. Later on, for the post-task,
62
they will have to read aloud their composition, so that their mates try to guess which sport
they are dealing with. Thus, among the components of each group, they will have to
decide who will write the text, who will present it later on and who will be watching the
time, since I will tell them they have 25 minutes to make the composition and to prepare
it for its oral exposition.
Post-task (10 minutes)
As we previously mentioned, for this task, they will have to read what they have
written, trying to omit as many words as they can, so that their classmates have to guess
what sport they are dealing with. As for the instructions to omit those words, I will tell
them they can just omit single words that directly relate to the sport, such as “swim” in
the case of “swimming” and instead, they will have to replace it by something like: “do
something on the water”. For this task, I will also hand out some sheets with an evaluation
rubric on them, so that each group can evaluate their classmates’ performances. (See
appendix 3)
Closure activity (5 minutes)
For this activity, I will collect the rubrics the students will have previously filled
–with their impressions about what their classmates have done. After scanning them, and
looking at the punctuation they have got, I will congratulate the group which “has won”
and I will give them a small plastic trophy –which I will keep afterwards. Finally, I will
thank all of them for their work and I will say goodbye, reminding them of the fact that
the vocabulary test will have place in the next session. To ensure that they at least, look
over what we have been doing in the previous sessions, I will tell them to make one of
the extra-practice sheets they bought at the beginning of the year and to hand it in next
day.
Specifications:
The rubric is just for entertainment and it is a basic one, which I thought may be
useful, since they will have to pay attention to what their mates are saying.
For the pre-task, I intend to give them the cards under the impression that I am doing
it randomly, and they will not be totally wrong about it. But taking into account that
some of them are quite shy, and won’t probably dare to start speaking, the cards
containing the name of the objects placed in the other cards will be the ones I give to
63
those. Moreover, I will have into account which are the students who are less
motivated and usually distracted as to try to sit them with those more hard-workers so
that the groups are balanced.
Regarding fast-finishers, if any group finish earlier than others, they will be able to
choose between keeping on rehearsing for their oral presentation, doing the activities
from the set of extra material or writing on their diaries.
Again, as in the rest of sessions, I have tried to make them practice the four skills.
They will have to listen to either me or their mates during the warm-up and the pre-
task, later on they will have to write and talk –although this will take place in Spanish,
at least they will have to say the sentences in English, and finally, they will have to
read aloud, practicing therefore two of the skills.
The main objective of this lesson will be to make them work collaboratively and to
get on with speaking aloud –when they read their texts.
As I mentioned before, the tool for today will be a small plastic trophy, which will be
given to them once they have finished working.
I will have into account that I may find some difficulties during the task, and so I will
be prepared for them:
As I may be told by some of the students that they do not know what to
write, I will have some sheets containing some verbs, names, and adjectives prepared, so
that I can give them in case they tell me so. But, I will have theses sheets out only in cases
like this one, since by the time of this lesson, they will have worked with all the verbs,
adjectives, or nouns they may need to write the composition.
I will have some spare blank sheets of paper and pens, as I usually do.
64
2.15.5 DIDACTIC UNIT #5: LET’S GO FOR IT!
Today, the session will be devoted to the vocabulary test. (See annex 2.4) It will
be entirely written, although there is rich variety of activities. The punctuation students
will get in the exam is a maximum of 10. Regarding the evaluation of the student
throughout the whole unit, this exam constitutes a 13 %. (See table on the evaluation
section)
Specifications:
Those who finish faster will be able to choose between writing on their diary what the
vocabulary test was about and their impressions, or to do any extra activity from the
set.
The objective of these test is to see if they have been able to catch up on what we have
been doing during the previous sessions and see if I can continue with the
methodology I have been implementing up to now.
Moreover, this will also constitute a way of revising what we have been doing, more
than a difficult or very important exam, since its percentage of the final mark will not
be high.
65
2.15.6 DIDACTIC UNIT #6: LET’S PLAY FOOTBALL!
Warm-up (5’)
As this session will take place after holidays, I will start by informing the
students of their marks and we will revise the most common mistakes. When I correct an
exam, I always comment on every single mistake so, although the general revising of the
mistakes is not so important in that sense, it will be good for everyone to look over the
common errors, as well as looking for the solution together. Anyway, I will tell the
students to take their exams home and revise them at the same time they copy the mistakes
they made in a sheet of paper, write the explanations referring to why they are mistakes
–in Spanish, and their correct forms. Next day, they will have to bring me that work in a
sheet of paper.
Pre-task (5’)
As I previously said, this session will take place after a holiday week, so we will
revise must and can again, so that we can continue working with them. I will be asking
them for rules to use those grammar points, and writing schemes on the blackboard, so
that every kind of learner can refresh their memories –i.e. some by listening to the rules,
other by seeing them written on the blackboard, and others by copying them on their
notebooks.
Task (25’)
Regarding the video students watched in the second session, and the characters
who appeared in it, today, we will be learning some things about them. I will hand out
some texts on which they will have information about these athletes and they will have
to do a basic Gallery walk activity. For this activity, I will let them sit with whoever they
want, since the main objective will be a different one this time. (See specifications section
below).
Students will be working with these texts and they will create a poster with the
names and some facts about the lives of these athletes on them. I will also give them some
photographs, so that their posters look more appealing. The posters will have to contain
simple and basic information about the sportspeople they have been reading about.
Students will have to decide which information they will write on their posters and which
information is not necessary.
66
Post-task (15’)
After they have finished, I will call one from each group according to numbers
and form groups. Afterwards, they will have to go around the class, approaching the
posters which will be hanging on the walls and explaining to their mates who is who. This
task will be carried out in English, but it will be very basic and simple, since students will
have to give the information by repeating the same structures we have been working with
up to now –i.e. This is…, s/he can do…, s/he is famous because s/he can…
Closure (5’)
To finish, I will ask the students which poster they liked they most and why and
I will give a small trophy to the group who made it as a reward.
Specifications:
As I mentioned above, the main objective of this activity is a particular one.
Although there are other purposes such as to work collaboratively and develop
some skills, this task aims to eliminate possible stereotypes or attitudes of
discrimination. Thus, as boys will probably sit together most in most of the cases,
I will try to give them texts about sportswomen and with girls, I will do it the other
way around.
Anyway, I will make an exception. With those students who are less motivated,
who are usually boys, I will try to give them the texts about their favourite athletes
such as Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi, to motivate them and make them want to
work.
The texts I give them will not be too long, but still, there will be some information
they will not need to include in the posters. My intention is to tell them they should
look for the athletes’ age, favourite sports, habits, abilities, etc.
As with the rest of sessions, I have tried to make the students use all their skills
and to help every kind of learner –visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic.
As today session is called Let’s Play Football, I will give the students some yellow
and green cards and when they make a mistake, students will have to raise one of
the cards. That way, students will have to pay attention.
67
2.15.7 DIDACTIC UNIT #7: LET’S DO JUDO!
Warm-up (10’)
For a start, in this session we will play a small game called Who is Who, with the
help of the posters on the wall. Each student will choose one of the athletes on the posters
they made, and the rest will have to be asking them questions until they find out who they
chose. I will tell them they should ask their classmates some questions about what they
can do and once they know who their mates have chosen they must say it using must –
“you must be…”
Pre-task (10’)
Now, students will have to read a text about judo rules and fill the gaps with
must or mustn’t. Afterwards, I will project the exercise on the digital board and we will
all read it aloud, correct, and translate it. I will be calling students to the board, so that the
activity becomes more dynamic. (See annex 2.5)
Task (15’)
For the main task, I will show them a power point presentation where a lot of
signals and pictures will be presented to them, and they will have to tell me when to use
must and when we must use can. At the same time, I will be asking them to tell me
sentences referring to the meaning of the picture, and they will have to copy them on their
notebooks so that everyone pay attention and do the activity. (See CD1)
Post task (15’)
Our last activity will be to establish the rules for other sport. I will suggest
football since it is the most known to everyone but if they prefer, we can do the exercise
about any other sport. I will be calling one student to the blackboard per rule, to write the
sentence while other says the rule, so that everyone participate.
Closure (5’)
To finish, we will look for mistakes in the sentences on the blackboard and we
will correct them all together.
Specifications:
As we usually work in groups or pairs, today we will work collaboratively among
all of us, so those students who like studying and usually work well work at their
rhythm but without leaving the rest behind.
68
The main objective of this session is to make them use the main grammar points
of the unit in a dynamic way, so that they can learn and revise them all together,
implementing them in activities such as the power point one, and the one in the
pre-task, in which they will apply this new knowledge –rules for must and can, to
the one they have from before –vocabulary and general knowledge.
As we all will be doing the same together, there will be not fast finishers.
Again, I have tried to implement the four skills during the lesson.
The tool today will be a yellow belt –a karate belt I have at home, and I will take
it to the class. Every time a student wants to speak, he will have to take the belt
and tie it to her/his waistline.
69
2.15.8 DIDACTIC UNIT #8: LET’S DO IT RIGHT!
This session will be different to the rest in terms of activities, since it will include
two main tasks and their respective pre and post-tasks. (For the reason, see specifications
section below)
Warm-up (5’)
As today we will start with something new, we will do a previous brainstorming
about everything we have seen in the unit, to make sure they remember what they have
learnt.
Pre-task (5’)
Today we will work on the adverbs of manner and degree, and how the former
ones change from adjectives to adverbs, as well as the rules for their collocations within
a sentence –i.e. word order. Therefore, I will explain it during the pre-task helping myself
with small schemes on the blackboard, and students will have to copy them. This way
every kind of learner will make the most of the explanation and will understand it. (See
annex 2.6)
Task (10’)
Today, students will be writing about the posters again, but this time, they will
be working not only with the ones from the gallery walk exercise, but with the posters
from the first session too. They will have to work in pairs about two of the posters. Every
student will have to choose one of the posters and they will have to make a short dialogue
asking each other what can or must you do in the classroom or what can the athlete do–
since they will be working with all the posters they have made. Thus, one student will ask
her/his pair something related to the poster s/he has chosen and vice versa. They will be
writing their “dialogues” down on their notebooks –the students will write their questions
and the answers of their partners.
Post task (1’)
Finally, I will collect their dialogues so that I can correct them at home.
70
Pre-task (10’)
Now, we will do an exercise about a typical Scottish sport, in which students
will have to choose between must or can. We will do it all together and once we have
finished, I will ask them to find the adverbs used in the text. Once they tell me, I will ask
them for the adjective they come from and to tell me how they have been formed. (See
annex 2.6)
Task (20’)
Now, in groups of 3, students will have to make up a similar game or sport and
they will be told that each of them must contribute with, at least, 2 ideas. They will be
able to write it down once or each on their notebooks, I do not mind, but I will collect
them afterwards, since next day they will be tested on their writing skills. The only rule
will be that they have to include adverbs.
Post-task (3’)
For the post task, I will collect the writings but I will do it in a different way. I
will give them instructions to pass their texts to the front, using some of the adverbs. For
instance, I will tell them to put their names on the work and to write clearly so that I can
understand them well, to quietly and carefully pass their sheets of paper to the front and
to not do it fast.
Closure (1’)
To finish the session, I will ask them if the exercise was difficult, and tell them
to quietly collect their school-bags, since they are going to another classroom for the next
session.
Specifications:
The main objective of this lesson is to make them work under some pressure to
help them get on in situations like that, to get used to the final exam, since they
usually complain and say they do not have time enough to finish it. I will collect
both activities work, but just to see how they are improving, since I will evaluate
their writing work two sessions later, but it will not be important if they finish or
not today.
71
I have also tried to make them practice the four skills. They will have to read aloud
the first text, so that listening, reading, and oral skills will be practiced and they
will have to write afterwards.
As the main objective of today was to learn how to work under some pressure and
be efficient, they will be the ones to decide who they want to work with for both
activities.
Although I do not think there will be students finishing faster, but in that case,
they will be able to get any extra activity from the set.
72
2.15.9 DIDACTIC UNIT #9: LET’S GO SKIING!
This session will be also different in terms of activities, since it will include two
main tasks and their respective pre and post-tasks.
Warm-up (4’)
For a start, they will have to brainstorm the adverbs they learnt in the previous
session.
Pre-task (5’)
Afterwards, we will watch and listen to a short video in which they will be told
about sky-jumping. The video has been created for a kids program, but even though the
language is adapted to children in some way, I have also subtitled it, in case they do not
understand it well. I will play it twice. (See CD1)
Task (10’)
The main task will consist of some questions which students will have to answer
individually, and which will be later on given to me, since I would like to assess their
listening skills. This will help me for when I have to evaluate them on their listening test.
Post-task (1’)
I will collect the questions to the listening. Again, as I did in the previous session,
I will ask them to hand in their sheets of paper by means of instructions, using the adverbs
we saw in the previous session.
Pre-task (10’)
For the second activity, we will listen to another audio but this time, only to the
sound, so that I can assess their listening skills and capacity of understanding this time
without watching what they are listening to at the same time. So I will play a short
recording and they will have to listen to it, and fill some gaps on the script I will hand out
to them. (See annex 2.7)
Task (20’)
For the task, we will read the text all together and translate it. Afterwards, they
will have to answer some questions, but this time in pairs, so that the session becomes
73
more dynamic. This time, I will be writing numbers on the blackboard and covering it
with my hand, and they will have to guess. For make this process shorter, I will only write
numbers from 1 to 3 and those who guess the numbers will be sitting together. Afterwards,
they will have to answer to some questions related to the text, so that I can check if they
understood it.
Post-task (1’)
Later on, I will also take their sheets so that I can correct them at home. Again,
I will be telling them to pass their work to the front by means of instructions and adverbs.
Closure (4’)
To finish, I will tell them they will have to write a text at home and I will help
myself with a scheme on the blackboard, to tell them what exactly they have to write. The
idea is that they talk about their favourite sport, or any other they want to and the
information it should contain will be: name of the sport, number of players, where it is
played –indoors, outdoors, or both, equipment, rules, how to win, and why they have
chosen to write about it, and why can it help to be healthy. They will have to hand it in to
me the next day.
Specifications:
The main objective of this session was to assess their listening skills, at the same
time they practice and prepare themselves for the final listening test.
In case there are any fast-finishers, they will be able to choose between writing on
their diaries and doing any other extra activity from the set.
I have also tried to include other skills in this session, although there will be less
oral skills practice, since today main goal was to work on their listening skills,
since we will have the listening test in the next session.
74
2.15.10 DIDACTIC UNIT #10: LET’S LISTEN TO SPORT!
Today, the session will be different in terms of teaching methodology, since it
will not be task-based. This lesson will consist of the listening test and afterwards,
students will be working on their oral test for next session.
As today is the final listening test, I will take this five minutes so sit them
separately and to explain to them the instructions for the exam. The audio has been taken
from their book material, so it is adapted to their level and is not too difficult. Besides,
the audio deals with a computer game, and it talks about the same points with which they
should have been working at home when writing their texts to hand in today.
First of all, I will play the audio once and they will have to listen to it without
writing anything on the script I will have given to them. Afterwards, I will play it a second
time, but this time, I will be stopping the audio and repeating what the speaker said. On
their scripts, there will be some gaps and they will have to fill those with what they listen.
At the end, I will play the audio one more time so that they can check if what they have
written is correct and I will collect their tests. (See annex 8)
After they have finished the text, I will explain to them what they have to do
next. And this will be to prepare themselves for their oral test. As it is an oral test, they
are not used to speak much English and students usually get nervous about it, I will let
them to choose the partner they want to.
Once they have chosen and sit together, I will explain them the rules for the
activity and these will be: they will have to find one sport or thing they both can do and
one they can’t do, as well as one thing they must do at home and one they mustn’t do at
school, and they will have to explain why. I will write this on the blackboard to clarify
and make sure they understand what they have to do. (See annex 2.8 for an example of
the activity)
Once I have explained the rules, they will have to write their dialogues and write
it on their notebooks, so that they can revise it at home and prepare themselves for the
exam, since they will not be able to look at it during the oral test. If they finish, they will
be able to practice and prepare for it. I will be looking at their dialogues so that I can
correct possible mistakes. If they want to, they can also practice them aloud, so that I can
listen to them.
75
Specifications:
As I previously said, teaching methodology won’t be task-based as it has been for
the rest of the lessons, mainly because it will consist of an exam.
Anyway, I have also tried to make them practice all their skills, since I consider it
to be very important, no matter which is the goal of the lesson.
Regarding the goal, my main goal is to evaluate their listening and to make them
see that they can do it. The difference with the previous lessons is that they were
working with the questions to the listening, and it could have been more difficult
for them, but I did it on purpose. I wanted them to get along with listening to
recordings and work on them, so that they realize they can do it. And that is why
today I they have to only fill the gaps.
Another goal for today session is to work on their oral exam and I think that to
make up their texts themselves and with the classmates they feel more comfortable
with is a good way to get along with it.
In case the number of students is not even I will let them to do it in groups of
three, as they usually do.
In case of fast-finishers, they can keep on practicing for their oral exam or they
can do any other activity from the set. They will be also able to write on their
diaries about their impressions about the exam.
At the end of the session, I will remind them they have to bring their laptops for
next session.
76
2.15.11 DIDACTIC UNIT #11: LET’S GO TO THE OLYMPICS!
Warm-up (5’)
To start with, I will tell the students their marks on their listening tests and we
will briefly revise it so that they can see where they failed.
Pre-task (5’)
Today, we will work on a webquest about the Olympics and the Paralympics.
Firstly, I will play a video about the opening ceremony of the Olympics winter, which
belongs to the same programme for children that I played two sessions before. After it, I
will ask them what the speakers have been talking about and I will pass to explain the
rules for the main activity.
Task (25’)
During the master, concretely for the module of Innovation, one of my mates2
and I have created a WebQuest aiming to be able to apply it in class. So, today, students
will be working on it. An amount of 9 questions have been selected for them to answer.
These will appear on the screen –once they have opened the link to the webQuest. To be
able to answer them, they will have to click on the links that are also provided below the
questions. All the answers except for 1 have to be found in the pages to which the links
drive you. That exception will be called The Big Question and students will have to
manage themselves to look for the answer –i.e. looking it up on the Internet. They will
have to copy their answers on a sheet of paper. (See CD1)
Post-task (18’)
After they have finished, they will have to write a summary of what they have
learned about the Olympics and they should include at least, the information they have
needed for their answers to the previous questions.
Closure (2’)
To finish the session, I will collect their work so that I can assess if they have
managed to extract the basic information from a text and are able to make a summary of
what they have read, demonstrating that way that they were able to see what is important
2 Marta Pérez Sánchez
77
and what is not. I will also tell them to do their extra practice sheet at home so that they
can revise all the grammar points and vocabulary we have seen during the unit for the
exam, which will be in two days.
Specifications
The main goal of this session was to make them practice their reading and oral
skills, developing autonomy and decision-making skills at the same time. I want
to make the students work with texts and be able to discern between primary and
secondary information. I think they themselves will be able to realize that if they
have done the questionnaire well, they will be then able to write a complete
summary or otherwise they would not able to do so.
As I previously said, this activity was supposed to let students work alone and
autonomously develop those skills I mentioned before, but in case that not
everyone brought their computers, I will put them in pairs.
At the same time, I will be able to test their reading skills, since I will take their
work home.
In case of fast-finishers, today they will only be able to do some extra activities,
since the exam is approaching and they should revise what we have been doing
for it.
Again, I have tried to include the four skills in this session.
78
2.15.12 DIDACTIC UNIT #12: WE MUST DO IT!
This session will be also different in terms of teaching methodology. Since we
will be doing different activities all the time. Although it will follow a logical order and
the arrangement of exercises will be as follows:
1. Firstly, I will collect the extra practice sheets and I will give one to each
students regardless of who did it, so that they can correct their mates’ work. Later on, we
will correct the sheets all together and students will have to correct what their mates have
done when necessary. For this, I will assign names of sports, verbs, and parts of the
equipment necessary for those sports to the students, so that instead of calling them by
their names, I call them by those other names, and that way we revise the vocabulary once
again.
2. Later on, we will work on the digital board with some interactive activities
which will deal with both vocabulary and grammar points of this unit. For this activities,
I will divide the class in two halves by means of numbered heads and they will form two
teams, so that every time one student does the exercise right, her/his team gets a point.
(See annex 10)
3. At the end of the session, we will recount the points and I will give a small
plastic trophy to the team that wins. Later on, I will remind them of the fact their unit
exam will take place in the next session, and that they should bring me their notebooks
so that I can correct and evaluate them.
Specifications:
The main goal of this lesson was to revise everything we have been doing, since
the final test will take place during the next session.
As we will be all working together, there will not be fast-finishers, but I will still
have the set of extra material on the table.
I have also tried to include some practice for the four skills.
I did not want to apply the task-based methodology to this lesson because although
it will be task-based, it won’t be focused on a main one, but on different sets of
activities, depending on students’ efficiency.
79
1.15.13 DIDACTIC UNIT #13: WE CAN DO IT!
Warm-up (5’)
As this lesson will be focused on the unit exam, I will take 5 minutes to sit the
students separately and calm them, at the same time I hand the exam sheets out. (See
annex 2.11)
Pre-task (5’)
For the pre-task, once every student has got the exam, I will explain the
instructions for the exam, and we will all read the questions and translate them.
Task (40’)
Students will have to do the exam. There will be different types of questions but
they will be all focused on the use of English.
Post-task (3’)
I will collect the exams and ask them how it went.
Closure (2’)
I will tell them that they will have their marks next Monday and it will be also
then when I tell them their final marks for the unit.
Specifications:
The main goal of this test is to test the effectiveness of this unit and to check what
students have learnt so far.
As it is an exam, students will be working alone and separated from their mates.
For those who do not pass the exam, it does not mean they fail, since there are
other features I will evaluate as well. (See annex 3)
As there were other tests such as listening, oral, reading, and writing, this time, I
will mainly test their use of the language regarding different types of activities.
In case of fast-finishers, they will work on their last entry of their diary, and talk
about their impressions about the exam.
I will collect the diary on the next session.

The Horse Versus Man Marathon is a popular sports event in Wales. It is very unusual because
people and horses run in the same race! The marathon is every year in June in the Welsh town
of Llanwetyd Wells. Hundreds of people and horses from all over the world participate in the
race.
The marathon has got very simple rules. Humans and horses can run in the race, but each horse
must have a rider. Humans and horses run for 35 kilometres and the first person or horse to pass
the finish line wins the race. The race starts in the town centre and then the runners race over
roads, up hills and across fields and streams.
Horses can run very fast so they usually win the race. Huw Lobb, from London, is the first
human to win a Horse Versus Man Marathon. Lobb often runs in marathons, but he doesn’t
usually run with horses. He is very happy about his amazing success.

por can.
atrás no veían.
esperar bastante mientras terminaban.
empezar con must, aunque algunos no habían terminado. En este caso ocurrió lo mismo,
así que esperé un poco –aunque menos–.
111
mayoría, iba a llevar mucho tiempo.
estuvieron tranquilos y trabajando.
querían volver a escucharlo.
115
He de

Y no
128
lectivo, he podido aprender muchas cosas que antes no había imaginado, he tenido la
130
presenta a nivel individual.
