    Homework 1

    Date: February 14

Relate the statement of the left column with the statement of the right column by means ofone line

CENTRALIZATION: Work should be divided among individuals and groups to ensurethat

effort and attention are focused on special portions of the task. Fayolpresented work specialization as the best way to use the human

    resourcesof the organization.

ESPIRIT DE CORPS: The concepts of Authority and responsibility are closely related.

Authority wasdefined by Fayol as the right to give orders and the power to exact

obedience.Responsibility involves being accountable, and is therefore naturally

associatedwith authority. Whoever assumes authority also assumes responsibility.

INITIATIVE: A successful organization requires the common effort of workers.Penalties

should be applied judiciously to encourage this common effort.DISCIPLINE: Workers should receive orders from only one manager.

ORDER: The entire organization should be moving towards a commonobjective in a common direction.

UNITY OF DIRECTION: The interests of one person should not take priority over theinterests of the organization as a whole.

SCALAR CHAIN: Many variables, such as cost of living, supply of qualifiedpersonnel, general business conditions, and success of the business, should be considered in

determining a workers rate of pay.

AUTHORITY: Fayol defined centralization as lowering the importance of thesubordinate role. Decentralization is increasing the importance. Thedegree to which centralization or decentralization should be adopteddepends on the specific organization in which the manager isworking.EQUITY: Managers in hierarchies are part of a chain like authority scale.

Each manager, from the first line supervisor to the president, possesscertain amounts of authority. The President possesses the mostauthority; the first line supervisor the least. Lower level managers shouldalways keep upper level managers informed of their work activities. Theexistence of a scalar chain and adherence to it are necessaryif the organization is to be successful.STABILITY OF TENURE OF PERSONNEL: For the sake of efficiency and coordination, all materials andpeople related to a specific kind of work should be treated as equally aspossible.

DIVISION OF WORK: All employees should be treated as equally as possible.

UNITY OF COMMAND: Management should encourage harmony and general good feelingsamong employees.
