Las estaciones alrededor del mundo by Brendan Jameson

Build BackgroundRead the title to children. Help them use their knowledge of seasons in their own area. Build interest by asking questions such as the following: ¿En qué estación estamos? ¿Cómo es el tiempo en esta estación? ¿Cuál es la próxima estación?

Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, noting important ideas and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Here are some suggestions:

Pages 2–3: Explain that this is a book about seasons around the world that are different from the four seasons we usually think about.Suggested language: Vayan a las páginas 2 y 3. Hay cuatro fotos con las cuatro estaciones que tenemos en muchas partes del país. ¿Pueden nombrar las estaciones que ven en las fotos?

Page 4: Have children look at the photos and the section heading: Estaciones secas y de lluvias.

ReadHave children read Las estaciones alrededor del mundo silently while you listen to individual children read. Support their problem solving and fl uency as needed.

Respond to the TextPersonal ResponseInvite children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting.Suggested language: ¿Qué estación les gustaría tener donde viven? ¿Por qué?

Ways of ThinkingAs you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points.

Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text

• In the wet season, it rains for many days. In the dry season, it does not rain much.

• A tornado is a storm with fast winds that spin in a circle.

• A hurricane is a storm with strong winds and lots of rain.

• In día polar season, the sun does not set for many weeks. In noche polar season, the sun never rises.

• There are many different kinds of seasons around the world, not just the four we think about.

• Weather can be very powerful and scary.

• The photos show different kinds of seasons in places around the world.

• The author includes lots of details about the different seasons.

Choices for SupportFluencyInvite children to choose a page from the text and demonstrate phrased fl uent reading. Remind them to group words into phrases that show meaning.

Phonics and Word WorkProvide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:

• Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables in words from the book (estación, tornados, huracán, diferentes, América). Have them clap on each syllable: es-ta-ción, tor-na-dos, hu-ra-cán, di-fe-ren-tes, A-mé-ri-ca, etc.

• Word Wall Materials: words on word wall, index cards. Have children choose fi ve weather words from the word wall and read them. Then have children write the words on cards. Have partners build sentences using some of their words, and adding other words.

Writing About ReadingCritical ThinkingRead the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 13.7 and guide them in answering the questions.

RespondingRead aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities.

Target Comprehension SkillCause and Effect

Target Comprehension Skill Tell children that as they read they can think about what

happens and why it happens. Model how to think about cause and effect:

Think Aloud

Usemos el diagrama de causa y efecto para refl exionar sobre la temporada de huracanes. ¿Qué ocurre en una temporada de huracanes? Hay muchos días ventosos y lluviosos. ¿Por qué ocurre esto? Un huracán es una tormenta con vientos fuertes y mucha lluvia. Eso hace que la temporada sea ventosa y húmeda.

Practice the SkillHave children tell what happens during noche polar and tell why it happens.

Writing PromptRead aloud the following prompt. Have children write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6.

Write about one season we don’t have where we live. Tell what would happen if that season happened here.

En cada estación hay cambios deltiempo. En otoño, el tiempo es frío ylas hojas se caen de los árboles. Eninvierno, hace más frío todavía. Enalgunos lugares, cae nieve. Puedesresbalar en la nieve.En primavera, el aire se sientemás cálido. Las flores brotan y elcésped se pone verde. En verano, elaire se calienta más y crecenlas plantas.

Pero el tiempo no es igual en todas partes del mundo.
