    PRODUCT INSTALLATION GUIDE

    ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS

    Update: September/1999

Maccaferri reserves the right toamend product specifications without notice and

specifiers are requested to check as to the validity

of the specifications they are using.

    TerrameshSystem

MATERIAL DELIVERYTerrameshSystem units are manufactured with all compo-nents mechanically connected at the production facility. Allunits are supplied in the collapsed form, folded and bundled. The bundles are compressed and strapped together at the fac-tory for easy shipping and handling. Each bundle is labeledwith a tag reporting the sizes of the units contained. Lacingwire is supplied in coils and ring fasteners are shipped inboxes.

FOUNDATION PREPARATIONThe foundation on which the TerrameshSystem units are to

be placed shall be cut or filled and graded to the lines andgrades shown on the construction drawings. Surface irregu-larities, loose material, and vegetation shall be removed dur-ing the preparation of the foundation.

INSTALLATION PHASESCarefully remove the unit from the bundle and position it on aflat hard surface. When the units are unfolded for assembly, they will have one or two shipping folds. They can be re-moved by placing the fold over a 2 x 4 board and walkingalong the sides.

1.) A single unit taken from bundle.

2.) Assemble thefacing section by erecting the front, backpanel, and diaphragm. Ensure that all panels are in the cor-rect position, and the tops of all sides are satisfactorilyaligned.

4.) Stone Filling of the facing section shall occur so that eachcell be filled to a depth not exceeding 1-foot (0.30 m) higherthan the adjoining cell. For vertical or near vertical structuresthe exterior of the basket may be carefully hand placed to give aneat, flat, and compact appearance. Care shall be taken whenplacing fill material to assure that the sheathing on the PVCcoated baskets will not be damaged. It is also recommended toslightly overfill (1-1.5 inch) the baskets to allow for settlement ofthe rock. (Fig.1)

ROCK SPECIFICATIONRock for the facing section of a Terrameshunit shall be hard, angular to round, durable and of such quality that they shall notdisintegrate on exposure to water or weathering during the life ofthe structure. The rocks shall range between 4 inches (0.10 m)and 8 inches (0.20 m). The range in sizes shall allow for avariation of 5% oversize and/or 5% undersize rock, providedthat it is not placed on the exposed surface. The size shall besuch that a minimum of three layers of rock must be achievedwhen filling the 3 feet high Terrameshunits and a minimum oftwo layers for the 1.5 feet high units.

    For constructionease, connectpanel edgesperiodically.

3.) Connect with ring fasteners between adjacent units. Spac-ing of rings must not exceed six (6) inches. (Fig. 2) Connec-tions made along the panel edges assure a flat surface for fillplacement.

5.) Internal Connecting Wires shall be provided as shownbelow, fixed at 1/3 and 2/3 of the height for 3 foot (1m) Ter-rameshunits as the cell is being filled. In 1.5 foot high unitsstiffeners may be fixed at the half height level. Internal con-necting wires shall connect the exposed face of a cell to theopposite side of the cell. Lacing wire or prefabricated internalconnecting wires may be used.

6.) Backfill structural embankment. Prior to starting this op-eration, a geotextile filter shall be placed at the facing section

and backfill interface. The geotextile should have a 12-inchreturn at both top and bottom. (Fig.3)Compaction within three feet of the face should be carefullyperformed with a walk-behind compactor to prevent any distor-tions in the wall or slope face. (Fig. 4)

SOIL COMPACTIONPlace soil fill in approximately 1-foot lifts and compact it to therequired level. Mechanically stabilized earth structures shallbe made of a good quality, free draining, granular and/or se-lected fill. The recommended soil gradation is in the range of0.02 mm to 6 mm, or as indicated by AASHTO T-27 andFHWA-SA-96-071. Soils outside of this range may be suit-able, providing they have been approved by a geotechnicalengineer.Compaction shall be performed to 95% of Standard Proctor,by use of conventional compaction equipment.

7.) Installation of additional units requires that the rowsabove and below are to be connected together at the contactedges of the face.
