FORMACION ESPECIAL DE ADJETIVOS

Algunos adjetivos pueden derivar directamente de verbos. Los estudiantes hispano- parlantes suelen confundir esta modalidad del inglés y, con frecuencia, se cometen

errores en los exámenes. Observa:

Ron's war experience was depressing: it made him depressed.(La experiencia de Ron en la guerra fue deprimente: lo dejó depresivo)

Ramiro's friends were encouraging: he was encouraged.(Los amigos de Ramiro fueron alentadores: él se sintió alentado).

De acuerdo. La diferencia parece tan sutil que es fácil confundirte si no analizas un poco, pero aquí vienen las explicaciones y creemos que vas a entenderlo mejor:

ADJETIVOS TERMINADOS EN -ING

Estos adjetivos generalmente describen el efecto que algo genera:

The television programme was ...

annoying (molesto)  / boring (aburridor) / disappointing (decepcionante)frightening (alarmante, aterrador)  / interesting (interesante)

ADJETIVOS TERMINADOS EN -ED

Estos adjetivos generalmente describen cómo dicho efecto te hace sentir:

I was completely ...

annoyed (molesto)  / bored (aburrido) / disappointed (decepcionado)frightened (alarmado, aterrado)  / interested (interesado)

GRAN FINAL

¿Ya lo has comprendido verdad? Seguro que si te pedimos dos ejemplos nos dirías:

OM Personal is an interesting website to learn English.

I am completely interested in learning English with them.

► Europe, Africa, New York, Buenos Aires, Lake Michigan, Lake Geneva,Mont Blanc, Mount Aconcagua, Fifth Avenue, Florida Street.

Page 8: Inglés - Grammar

7/28/2019 Inglés - Grammar

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ingles-grammar 8/47

Pero utilizamos el artículo con estos lugares geográficos: nombres de ríos, canales,océanos, mares y cordilleras o cordones montañosos:

► the Amazon, the Parana, the Panama Canal, the Atlantic,

the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean, the Andes, the Alps, the Himalayas.

REGLA 2  No se utiliza el artículo para referirse a sustantivos no contables (o sustantivoscontables en plural) de una manera indefinida.

► the advice (el consejo) ◄ no es correcto ► the love (el amor, el cariño) ◄ no es correcto ► the letters (las cartas) ◄ no es correcto

Pero, sin embargo, utilizamos el artículo 'THE' en la estructura 'THE' + noun + aphrase para indicar a quién o a qué nos estamos refiriendo específicamente:

► the advice of a counsellor► the love (that) Martha gave her children► the letters on Manuel's desk.

REGLA 3  No se utiliza el artículo en ciertas frases preposicionales con 'instituciones' (por ejemplo. church (iglesia), college (colegio), home (hogar), hospital (hospital), prison (cárcel), school (escuela), university (universidad):

► My wife's in hospital.► They go to church every Sunday.► He's in prison for armed robbery.► Go to bed immediately!!

En los ejemplos anteriores estamos pensando en la función de la institución. Perocuando cuando pensamos en la institución como lugar específico, entonces utilizamos el artículo 'THE':

► Susan's in the hospital round the corner.► I want to go to the church where the poet is buried.► The conditions in the old prison were really bad.► Don't put your shoes on the bed.

REGLA 4  No se utiliza el artículo con nombres de persona:

Page 9: Inglés - Grammar

7/28/2019 Inglés - Grammar

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ingles-grammar 9/47

► Jane Fonda, Dr Valladares, Pope Paul.

Pero utilizamos el artículo 'THE' para enfatizar que alguien o algo es el más famoso desu especie o categoría:

You mean the Jane Fonda?Asimismo utilizamos el artículo 'THE' con títulos de persona:

► the Pope, the doctor, the Emperor of Japan.

Utilizamos los artículos 'A' o 'AN' con trabajos y profesiones (un aspecto gramaticalque muchos hispano-parlantes no suelen recordar):

► Sandra is a doctor, Mike is an engineer.

REGLA 5  No se utiliza el artículo para referirse a sustantivos contables en plural, pero utilizamos la estructura 'THE' + an adjective para referirnos a una categoría de personas enforma global:

► the old, the handicapped, the homeless, the Argentinians, the Chileans.

REGLA 6  No se utiliza el artículo con determinadas expresiones de tiempo:

► at night, at sunset, before sunrise, after sunrise.

Pero con muchas expresiones de tiempo comunes, utilizamos el artículo 'THE':

► in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, in the past,at the moment, during the day.

REGLA 7  No se utiliza el artículo cuando hacemos referencia al nombre de un deporte:

► I don't like tennis, Do you play football?

Pero utilizamos el artículo 'THE' para referirnos a instrumentos musicales:

► Jorge Essen plays the piano beautifully.

CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

Cuando deseas hablar acerca de una "posible" situación y sus resultados, debes utilizar una oración condicional. Observa estos ejemplos:

If people invite you to a party, they expect you to come properly dressed.(Si te invitan a una fiesta, se espera que vayas correctamente vestido/a)

Page 19: Inglés - Grammar

7/28/2019 Inglés - Grammar

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ingles-grammar 19/47

If I wear the green jacket, it'll go with my new shoes.(Si uso la chaqueta verde, ésta hará juego con mis zapatos nuevos)

En este tipo de oraciones condicionales existe una posibilidad real de que suceda loque en ellas se expresa. Básicamente, existen DOS tipos de estructuras:

CLAUSULA CONDICIONALIF + present simple

CLAUSULA PRINCIPALpresent simple

Se usa este tipo de oración condicional para hablar acerca de algo que siempre sucede.Es como una ley. En este tipo de condición if (si) tiene un significado similar a when(cuando):

If you put water in a cooler, it freezes.

(Si colocas agua en el congelador, ésta se congela)  (= When you put water in a cooler, it freezes)(Cuando colocas agua en el congelador, ésta se congela)

If you heat ice, it melts.(Si calientas hielo, éste se derrite) (= When you heat ice, it melts)(Cuando calientas hielo, éste se derrite)

CLAUSULA CONDICIONAL

IF + present simple

CLAUSULA PRINCIPAL

WILL / 'LL / WON'T + infinitive

En cambio, se utiliza esta segunda alternativa de oración condicional para hablar acerca de un probable resultado futuro, es decir, que no es absolutamente seguro:

If I wear the green jacket, it'll go with my new shoes.(Si uso la chaqueta verde, ésta hará juego con mis zapatos nuevos)

If you don't study, you won't pass the FCE exam.(Si no estudias, no aprobarás el examen de First Certificate) >> ;-(

En estas oraciones condicionales generalmente podemos utilizar unless (a menos que)en lugar de la estructura if... not (si... no). Observa:

Unless you study, you won't pass the exam.(A menos que estudies, no aprobarás el examen de First Certificate)  (= If you don't study, you won't pass the exam)(= Si no estudias, no aprobarás el examen)

Page 20: Inglés - Grammar

Unless I wear clothes like theirs, my friends will think I'm a bit strange.(A menos que use el mismo tipo de ropa que ellos, mis amigos pensarán que soy algoraro/a) (= If I don't wear clothes like theirs, my friends will think I'm a bit strange)

(Si no uso el mismo tipo de ropa que ellos, mis compañeros pensarán que soy algoraro/a)

Los ejemplos que has analizado arriba muestran dos patrones diferentes para esta casede condiciones. Sin embargo, son posibles también otras combinaciones de formasverbales. Aquí tienes dos ejemplos:

If you get the chance, visit Buenos Aires in spring.(Si tienes la oportunidad, visita Buenos Aires en primavera)

If you're not nervous, why is your hand shaking?

(Si no estás nervioso/a, ¿por qué está temblando tu mano?)Las combinaciones posibles pueden llevar incluso verbos modales como en estos tresejemplos.

If you have finished, you may go. >> MODAL VERB: may (Si has terminado, puedes irte)

If you're feeling ill, you ought to see a doctor.>> MODAL VERB: ought to (Si te estás sintiendo mal, deberías ver a un médico)

If Mirta, Ricardo and Miguel could do those webs, they can do anything.>> MODAL VERBS: could (past) - can (present) (Si Mirta, Ricardo y Miguel pudieron hacer esas webs, pueden hacer cualquier cosa).

COMPARATIVOS Y SUPERLATIVOS

¿Recuerdas las cinco reglas para formar el comparativo y superlativo de los adjetivos eninglés? Vamos a revisarlas aquí:

Page 21: Inglés - Grammar

7/28/2019 Inglés - Grammar

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ingles-grammar 21/47

beautiful >>  more beautiful >>  most beautiful

REGLA 5Recuerda que los comparativos y superlativos "irregulares" cambian totalmente. Aquítienes algunos:

good >>  better  >>  best bad >>  worse  >>  worst far >>  farther / further  >>  farthest / furthest

EXPRESANDO SIMILITUD

Puedes usar la estructura as ... as ... (tan ... como ...) para expresar similitud:

In this southern island it is as hot as the tropics.(En esta isla austral el tiempo es tan cálido como en el trópico)

Asimismo puedes colocar nearly (casi), almost (casi) or  just (exactamente) delante de

Page 22: Inglés - Grammar

7/28/2019 Inglés - Grammar

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ingles-grammar 22/47

la estructura as ... as ...:

London is nearly as expensive as Tokyo.(Londres es casi tan caro como Tokyo)

In summer, Tokyo is just as hot as the desert.

(En verano, Tokyo es exactamente tan caluroso como el desierto)

EXPRESANDO DIFERENCIA

Cuando comparas puedes expresar diferencia de tres formas:

A) not as/so ... as

Life in the countryside is not as fast as it is in Tokyo.(La vida en el campo no es tan agitada como lo es en Tokyo)

También puedes agregar nearly a la estructura not as/so ... as:

Kyoto isn't nearly as busy as Tokyo.(Kyoto casi no tiene tanto movimiento como Tokyo)

B) as ... as ... con twice, three times, half, a third, etc.

Japan's car exports are twice as high as Britain's.(Las exportaciones de autos de Japón duplican [son dos veces más que] las de GranBretaña)

Rice-growing is only half as important as it used to be.(El cultivo de arroz es apenas la mitad de lo importante que solía ser)

C) -er than ... o more/less ... than ...

The mountains are generally fresher than the cities.(Por lo general, las montañas son más frescas que las ciudades)

Most people think spring is more beautiful than summer.(La mayoría de la gente piensa que la primavera es más bonita que el verano)

England is less mountainous than Japan.(Inglaterra es menos montañosa que Japón)

También puedes anteponer much, far, a lot, lots, a little o a bit a la forma comparativadel adjetivo:

The south of the country is a lot warmer than the north.

Page 23: Inglés - Grammar

(El sur del país es mucho más cálido que el norte)

Their products are much less important than they used to be.(Sus productos son mucho menos importantes de lo que solían ser)

………………..

GRADOS DE UN ADJETIVO

Los grados de comparación del adjetivo son tres:

POSITIVO: Es el adjetivo en su forma simple, básica: nice, lindo; big, grande;COMPARATIVO: Establece la relación o comparación entre dos cosas;SUPERLATIVO: Denota el más alto grado de una cualidad.

Estos dos últimos grados se explican a continuación y tienen siempre como punto de partida el adjetivo en su grado positivo:

COMPARATIVOS

DE IGUALDAD

AFIRMATIVO  AS + adjective + AS = TAN + adjetivo + COMO

This book is as interesting as that magazine.Este libro es tan interesante como esa revista.

Buenos Aires is as expensive as TokyoBuenos Aires es tan cara como Tokio.

NEGATIVO  NOT AS + adjective + AS = NO TAN + adjetivo + COMO

This flat is not as big as that house.Este departamento no es tan grande como esa casa.

Paris is not as expensive as TokyoParís no es tan cara como Tokio.

DE SUPERIORIDAD Los monosílabos y los bisílabos terminados en sonido vocálico o con acento en la segunda

sílaba forman el comparativo añadiendo -er al adjetivo:

ADJETIVOSHASTA

2 SILABAS adjective + ER + THAN = MAS + adjetivo + QUE

This book is cheaper than that magazine.Este libro es más barato que esa revista.

Page 24: Inglés - Grammar

Con los polisílabos se antepone more (más) al adjetivo seguido de than (que comparativo):

ADJETIVOS DEMAS

DE 2 SILABAS MORE + adjective + THAN = MAS + adjetivo + QUE

Paris is more interesting than Los Angeles.París es más interesante que Los Angeles.

DE INFERIORIDAD Se antepone less (menos) al adjetivo seguido de than (que comparativo):less expensive than, menos caro que; less intelligent than, menos inteligente que.

SUPERLATIVOS

ALTERNATIVA 1

CONTRASTAN LA ORACION

PRECEDENTE ◄

however / but

nevertheless / yet

RECUERDA QUE:

HOWEVER (sin embargo), BUT (pero, sino), NEVERTHELESS (sin embargo, noobstante) y YET (aún así) introducen un contraste o contraposición a la oración precedente:

Page 28: Inglés - Grammar

Katty couldn't cash her paycheck ...Katty no pudo cobrar el cheque de su sueldo ...

►  However, she managed to buy a new TV set.Sin embargo consiguió comprarse un televisor nuevo.

►  But she managed to buy a new TV set.Pero consiguió comprarse un televisor nuevo.

►  Nevertheless, she managed to buy a new TV set. No obstante consiguió comprarse un televisor nuevo.

►  Yet she managed to buy a new TV set.Aun así consiguió comprarse un televisor nuevo.

ALTERNATIVA 2

althougheven though

though ►  CLAUSULA (SUJETO + VERBO)

RECUERDA QUE:

a)  THOUGH (aunque) y EVEN THOUGH (aun cuando)  pueden utilizarse en lugar de ALTHOUGH (aunque).

b)  EVEN THOUGH (aun cuando) es una forma más fuerte o reforzada de expresar ALTHOUGH (aunque).

►  Although it rained a lot,Aunque llovió intensamente,

►  Even though it rained a lot,Aun cuando llovió intensamente,

►  Though it rained a lot,Aunque llovió intensamente,

... we enjoyed our vacation.

... disfrutamos de nuestras vacaciones.

c)  En el inglés hablado, especialmente en la versión americana, se utiliza confrecuencia THOUGH (a pesar de ello, no obstante) como cierre de una oración.Esta modalidad suele confundir al estudiante hispano-parlante.

►  It rained a lot. We enjoyed our vacation though.Llovió intensamente. Disfrutamos de nuestras vacaciones a pesar de ello.

Page 29: Inglés - Grammar

ALTERNATIVA 3

in spite of  / despite ► NOUN► PRONOUN

►   – ING VERB

RECUERDA QUE:

DESPITE (a pesar de) puede utilizarse del mismo que IN SPITE OF (a pesar de), pero generalmente sólo se lo encuentra en el inglés formal. En su reemplazo, puedesusar también las expresiones DESPITE THE FACT THAT... (a pesar de que...) o IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT... (a pesar de que...):

►  In spite of the rain, / In spite of raining all day,A pesar de la lluvia, / A pesar de llover todo el día,

►  Despite the rain, / Despite how much it rained,A pesar de la lluvia, / A pesar de cuánto llovió,

►  Despite the fact that it was raining,A pesar de que estuvo lloviendo,

►  In spite of the fact that it was raining,A pesar de que estuvo lloviendo,

... we enjoyed our vacation.

... disfrutamos de nuestras vacaciones.

ALTERNATIVA 4

although  ◄ VERSUS►  in spite of  / despite

RECUERDA QUE:

ALTHOUGH (aunque), IN SPITE OF (a pesar de) y DESPITE (a pesar de) pueden utilizarse para expresar ideas similares, pero la construcción de la oración es

muy diferente:

►  Although the traffic was bad, I arrived on time.Aunque el tránsito estaba pesado, llegué a tiempo.

►  In spite of the traffic, I arrived on time.A pesar del tránsito, llegué a tiempo.

Page 30: Inglés - Grammar

►  I couldn't sleep, although I was very tired. No pude dormir aunque estaba muy cansado/a.

►  I couldn't sleep, despite being very tired. No pude dormir a pesar de estar muy cansado/a.

EXPRESANDO DESEOS DEL PASADO CON "WISH"

Estudia atentamente estas tres estructuras gramaticales y sus ejemplos:

1) Subject + WISH + that + Subject > HAD + Participle

I wish that Marisa had called yesterday.

(Ojalá / Fue mi deseo que Marisa llamara ayer).

2) Subject + WISH + that + Subject > COULD HAVE + Participle

I wish that Marisa could have called yesterday.(Ojalá / Fue mi deseo que Marisa hubiese podido llamar ayer).

3) Subject + WISH + that + Subject > WOULD HAVE + Participle

I wish that Marisa would have called yesterday.(Ojalá / Fue mi deseo que Marisa hubiese llamado ayer).

REGLA BASICA: Recuerda que aunque el verbo WISH se encuentra en presente, esta estructuragramatical se refiere a deseos en tiempo pasado.

EXPRESANDO DESEOS DEL FUTURO CON "WISH"

Analiza ahora atentamente estas tres estructuras gramaticales y sus ejemplos:

1) Subject + WISH + that + Subject > VERB (past)I wish that Marisa called every day. (Ojalá / Es mi deseo que Marisa llame todos los días).

2) Subject + WISH + that + Subject > COULD + VERB (infinitive)

Page 31: Inglés - Grammar

7/28/2019 Inglés - Grammar

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ingles-grammar 31/47

I wish that Marisa could call tomorrow. (Ojalá / Es mi deseo que Marisa pudiera llamar mañana).

3) Subject + WISH + that + Subject > WOULD + VERB (infinitive)

I wish that Marisa would call tomorrow. (Ojalá / Es mi deseo que Marisa llamara mañana).

REGLAS BASICAS: a) Recuerda que aunque el verbo WISH se encuentra en presente, esta estructuragramatical se refiere a deseos de hábitos o eventos futuros. b) No utilices esta estructura para expresar deseos en tiempo pasado.c) No utilices WILL en lugar de COULD o WOULD.

EJEMPLOS:

INCORRECT I wish that I received this letter before the office closed.

CORRECT I wish that I had received this letter before the office closed.I wish that I could have received this letter before the office closed.I wish that I would have received this letter before the office closed.

NO ES TAN DIFICIL. PRACTICALO CON PACIENCIA !!

PARTE INECESIDAD (GENERALMENTE PARA REPARAR O MEJORAR)

Observa esta estructura gramatical: Subject + NEED + -ing form

This paragraph needs revising.(Este párrafo necesita verificación)

REGLA BASICA 1:Evita utilizar un infinitivo o participio en lugar de un gerundio o forma -ing.

Observa esta segunda estructura: Subject + NEED + to be > participle

This paragraph needs to be revised(Este párrafo necesita ser verificado)

Page 32: Inglés - Grammar

7/28/2019 Inglés - Grammar

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ingles-grammar 32/47

REGLA BASICA 2:Evita utilizar un gerundio o forma -ing en lugar de un participio.

EJEMPLO:Incorrecto:  His car needs to fix

Correcto: His car needs fixing  o también His car needs to be fixed.

PARTE IIHABILIDAD O CONOCIMIENTO

Analiza esta primera estructura gramatical: Subject + KNOW + noun

I know the answer.(Sé/Conozco la respuesta)

REGLA BASICA: Evita utilizar un infinitivo después del verbo "know".

Y ahora compara ésta con la anterior: Subject + KNOW + how > infinitive

I know how to answer the question (Sé cómo responder la pregunta)

REGLA BASICA: Recuerda que "how" debe utilizarse con el infinitivo de unverbo.

EJEMPLO:Incorrecto: If she knew to drive, he would lend her his car.

Correcto: If she knew how to drive, he would lend her his car.Es éste último un error muy común entre los hispano-parlantes que aprenden inglés yque hay que tratar de eliminar antes que se convierta en "muletilla". Y como OMPersonal es muy insistente y busca que el hispano demuestre su capacidad, aquí vamás práctica:

¿Como dirías "Mi esposa sabe cocinar"? ¿"My wife knows to cook", verdad?PUES NO. Lo correcto es: "My wife knows HOW to cook ".

…………………….

¿QUÉ SON LOS "FALSOS AMIGOS"? Los estudiantes hispano-parlantes suelen utilizar indebidamente ciertas palabras eninglés que, en su idioma natal, se escriben o pronuncian de modo parecido.

EJEMPLO 1:Para expresar: "Compré dos carpetas en la papelería", un hispano-parlante suele decir:"I bought two CARPETS at the stationery's". "Carpet" en inglés significa "alfombra",

Page 33: Inglés - Grammar

7/28/2019 Inglés - Grammar

mientras que la "carpeta" del ejemplo se traduce como "FOLDER".

EJEMPLO 2: Para decir: "Compré este libro en la librería", suele expresarlo como "I bought this book at the LIBRARY".

I will be lying on the beach tomorrow. (Estaré descansando en la playa mañana)We will be arriving at 5.30. (Estaremos llegando a las 17.30)Marcela will be meeting us there. (Marcela nos estará esperando allí)

Page 35: Inglés - Grammar

7/28/2019 Inglés - Grammar

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ingles-grammar 35/47

En el habla informal cotidiana, la contracción del verbo auxiliar will es 'll:

I'll be lying on the beach tomorrow. (Estaré descansando en la playa mañana)We'll be arriving at 5.30. (Estaremos llegando a las 17.30)Marcela'll be meeting us there. (Marcela nos estará esperando allí)

La forma negativa se obtiene colocando la partícula not después del auxiliar will, esdecir will not y la contracción de will not es won't.

Silvia will not (= won't) be studying tomorrow. (Silvia no estudiará mañana)

La forma interrogativa se obtiene invirtiendo el orden del sujeto y del auxiliar will:

Will you be coming tonight? (¿Vendrás esta noche?)How long will you be staying? (¿Cuánto tiempo te quedarás?)

USO DEL FUTURO CONTINUO EXPRESADO CON "WILL BE + ING VERB"

Esta estructura se utiliza para referirse a hechos o actividades futuras que ya han sidodecididas o acordadas previamente. No conlleva ningún énfasis o intención particular, sino que se refiere simplemente a hechos o actividades que acontecerán con toda probabilidad.

Aquí tienes ejemplos de los casos en que se utiliza esta estructura:

1) Para hacer referencia a un hecho individual que tendrá lugar en el futuro.

We will be landing in a few moments. (Aterrizaremos en unos momentos) We will be arriving at about 5.30. (Llegaremos aproximadamente a las 17.30) We will be meeting Mrs. Caceres in Galicia, Spain. (Nos reuniremos con la Sra. Cáceres en Galicia, España)

2) Para hacer referencia a hechos que tendrán lugar repetidamente en el futuro.

I'll be getting up early every day next week.

(Me levantaré temprano todos los días de la semana)

3) Para hacer referencia a actividades que se desarrollarán durante un período de tiempoen el futuro.

We will be flying at a height of 30,000 feet.(Volaremos a 30.000 pies de altura)We will be staying for three weeks.

(Nos quedaremos durante tres semanas) This time next week, I'll be lying on the beach.(A esta hora la semana entrante estaré descansando en la playa)

Al sugerir que la actividad futura ya ha sido acordada, la estructura WILL BE + ING

VERB constituye una útil manera de preguntar por los planes de alguien. Observa estosdos mini-diálogos:

- How long will you be staying? (¿Cuánto tiempo te quedarás?)- Just one night. (Sólo una noche)

- Will you be staying at home all afternoon? (¿Estarás en casa toda la tarde?)- Sure!! (Claro!!)- OK. I'll phone you at 3.30. (De acuerdo. Te llamo a las 15.30)

Asimismo, la estructura WILL BE + ING VERB se emplea cuando es necesario que la pregunta sea cortés porque la persona que habla está por pedir un favor ("manguear algo", como decimos muy coloquialmente en Argentina):

- Will you be using your new digital camera? (¿Usarás tu cámara digital?)- No. I don't believe so. (No, creo que no)- Could I borrow it? (¿Podría pedírtela prestada?) ;-(

PULSANDO AQUÍ podrás leer más acerca de este tiempo verbal en la sección OMVERBS.

ALGO PARA RECORDAR

En un anuncio del subterráneo londinense, con referencia al servicio de trenes duranteun día en el que tenía lugar una famosa maratón en la ciudad, apareció un ejemplo deuno de los usos arriba enumerados:

W E ' L L B E R U N N I N G A L L D A Y

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ingles-grammar 37/47

Actualmente el uso de esta forma en frases afirmativas está restringido al lenguaje y a laescritura formales. En el habla informal cotidiana sólo se usa shall para iniciar preguntasen las que se hacen ofrecimientos, se piden sugerencias o se hacen invitaciones. En esecaso, la traducción al español suele corresponder a la del tiempo Presente Simple.Observa estos ejemplos:

HACER OFRECIMIENTOS:Shall I make some coffee? (¿Preparo algo de café?)Shall I carry your case? (¿Te llevo la maleta?)Shall I open the window? (¿Abro la ventana?)

PEDIR SUGERENCIAS o HACER INVITACIONES:Shall I take a picture of you? (¿Te tomo una foto?)Shall we dance? (¿Bailamos?)Who shall we invite? (¿A quiénes invitamos?)

The fans continued to shout / shouting at the referee.Helen started to cough / coughing because of her bad cold.It began to rain / raining.

Otros verbos pueden tomar el gerundio o el infinitivo en la mayoría de los tiemposverbales (aunque el inglés británico prefiere el gerundio, el infinitivo es muy comúnen inglés americano), pero sólo se los usa con el infinitivo cuando se encuentran encondicional. Estos verbos son: hate (odiar, no gustar), love (amar), can't bear (nosoportar), like (gustar), dislike (disgustar) y prefer (preferir).

I hate talking to her.

Page 38: Inglés - Grammar

I like to get up early on Sunday mornings and go riding.

... but:

I like getting up early on Sunday mornings to go riding.

I couldn't bear to live in that country.I'd prefer to see the manager early tomorrow.

CUANDO EL SIGNIFICADO CAMBIASin embargo, con algunos verbos el significado de las oraciones se altera, si se utilizangerundios o infinitivos. Es interesante analizarlo:

Remember/Forget (recordar/olvidar) Con los verbos remember (recordar) y forget (olvidar), el gerundio hace referencia a una

acción que ocurrió ANTES QUE el hecho de recordar u olvidar. Veamos...

I remember giving him the key significa...I remember having given him the key o lo que es lo mismo...I remember the moment in which I gave him the key.

I will never forget going water rafting in Africa significa...I will never forget the occasion on which we went water rafting in Africa.

Sin embargo, con remember y forget, el infinitivo hace referencia a una acción queocurrió DESPUES QUE surgiera el hecho de recordar u olvidar. Veamos...

I remember to feed the cat significa...I remember that it was my responsibility to feed the cat and I fed her.

I forgot to post that letter significa...I did not post the letter because I forgot.

Regret (lamentar/se) El verbo regret (lamentar/se) es similar. La estructura regret + gerund (ing) hacereferencia mientras que regret + infinitive se usa para prsentar malas noticias (I regret tosay..., I regret to tell you..., I regret to inform you...). Por lo tanto, decimos...

I regret telling him the secret significaI regret having told him the secret o lo que es lo mismoI wish I hadn't told him the secret.

I regret to say that I just ran over your dog! significaI'm very sorry but I just killed your dog with my car.

Page 39: Inglés - Grammar

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ingles-grammar 39/47

I regret to inform you that your car is missing significaIt is my sad responsibility to inform you that your car is missing.

Stop (dejar de) La estructura stop + gerund (ing) expresa que se ha interrumpido la acción mencionada

en el gerundio. Veamos...You must stop smoking.

Sin embargo, stop + infinitive expresa que se interrumpel la actividad que se estárealizando para llevar a cabo la actividad mencionada en el infinitivo. Observa...

The window-cleaners stopped to smoke. significaThey stopped cleaning the windows in order to have a cigarette .

Go on (seguir, continuar) La estructura go on + gerund expresa lo mismo que continue + gerund/infinitive:

He went on talking about himself, even though nobody was listening.

Sin embargo, go on + infinitive significa to start something new:

He went on to talk about his children significaHe was talking about one thing and then he changed the subject and started to talk about his children.

Try (tratar, intentar) Existe una ligera diferencia entre try + infinitive y try + gerund. La estructura try +infinitive sugiere que la acción del infinitivo es difícil y posiblemente la persona nollegue a realizar la acción:

Try to open the window. I can't because I'm not very strong and it has recently been painted. He tried to climb the cliff.

Sin embargo, try + gerund sugiere que la acción del gerundio no es compleja perodesconocemos si la consecuenciade esa acción será lo que buscamos o deseamos. Seutiliza la estructura try + gerund cuando realizamos algo para descubrir cuáles serán lasconsecuencias. Observa...

A: Phew! It's hot in here!B: Try opening the window. Although it's probably just as hot outside!

Need (necesitar, tener necesidad de) Con el verbo need, el infinitivo adquiere un significado activo y el gerundio uno pasivo.

I need to talk to you significa I must talk to you.

Page 40: Inglés - Grammar

7/28/2019 Inglés - Grammar

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ingles-grammar 40/47

My shoes need cleaning significa My shoes need to be cleaned. The car needed servicing significa The car needed to be serviced.

………………

La forma GOING TO seguida de infinitivo se utiliza:

1) Para expresar la intención de realizar en el futuro alguna acción que ya está decidida. What are you going to do at the weekend?  ¿Qué harás durante el fin de semana?I'm going to visit a friend near Bogota.Visitaré (Tengo intenciones de visitar) a un amigo cerca de Bogotá.

2) Para predecir acontecimientos futuros basándose en una evidencia presente. (Estosacontecimientos suelen estar situados en un futuro próximo.)Look at those clouds. It's going to rain. Mira esas nubes. Lloverá. (Va a llover.)Este último uso no debe confundirse con el del tiempo Present Continuous el cualindica una acción que está realizando en el momento en que se la menciona.

Compara ahora estas dos frases:Going to + infinitivo: I'm going to answer it. (Lo responderé; Voy a responderlo.)Present continuous: I'm answering it. (Lo estoy respondiendo).

FORMACION DE LA ESTRUCTURA "GOING TO + INFINITIVO".

Esta estructura se construye con las formas del tiempo Present Continuous del verbogo (I'm going, She's going, etc.) más el infinitivo del verbo principal precedido de la partícula to (to visit, to answer, etc.).

Practica un poco leyendo en voz alta estos ejemplos:I'm going to visit some friends this afternoon. He's going to watch TV tomorrow. She's going to leave in ten minutes. We're going to play tennis at six o'clock. You're to paint the kitchen on Friday. They're going to go to the movies next week.

PRESTA MUCHA ATENCION AHORA !!Cuando el verbo en infinitivo que sigue a la forma going to es el mismo verbo go, lafrase puede parecer un poco confusa a causa de la repetición verbal. Este tipo de frasesse suelen abreviar de la siguiente manera:

Page 41: Inglés - Grammar

7/28/2019 Inglés - Grammar

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ingles-grammar 41/47

En lugar de: We're going to go to the cinema on Friday. Se omite to go y se dice: We're going to the cinema on Friday.

Y en las preguntas suele omitirse también, a fin de evitar la redundancia verbal con el

verbo go. Observa:En lugar de: Where are you going to go? Se omite to go y se dice: Where are you going to?

Las formas negativas e interrogativas se construyen de acuerdo con las normas queseguramente ya conoces. Las formas negativas se construyen colocando la partícula not entre el verbo auxiliar y la forma going to. Observa:

I'm not going to play tennis tomorrow. He's not / He isn't going to watch TV this evening.

Las formas interrogativas se construyen invirtiendo el orden del sujeto y del verboauxiliar. De este modo:

Are you going to stay at home tonight?  Is it going to rain? What is he going to do?

A: What are you gonna do tonight?B: I'm gonna stay home.A: What are you gonna do for your birthday?B: I'm gonna go out with some friends.

A: Where are you gonna go?B: We're gonna go to a restaurant.

USED TO - BE USED TO >> EXPLICACIONES GENERALESOfrecemos por separado ambas gramáticas porque --aunque parezcan similares-- sondos estructuras diferentes.

1) When I was a child I used to walk  along this avenue.[solía caminar]

2) I am used to walking, so I walk from work to my house every day.[estoy acostumbrado a caminar]

MEMORIZANDO Tienes que recordar que son dos estructuras diferentes:

a) En la primera (I used to walk ) la forma verbal es USED TO y se utiliza únicamenteen pasado y no lleva nunca el verbo BE.

 b) La segunda (I am used to walking) lleva siempre el verbo BE delante de USEDTO.

ANALIZANDO SITUACIONES

Desde luego, si desde niño sigues teniendo (y no has perdido) el hábito de caminar, no podrás decir:

I used to walk when I was a child.(Solía caminar cuando era niño)

En ese caso, tendrás que expresarlo de este otro modo:

Page 43: Inglés - Grammar

7/28/2019 Inglés - Grammar

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ingles-grammar 43/47

I am used to walking since I was a child.(Estoy acostumbrado a caminar desde que era niño).

PARTE ICOSTUMBRE O HABITO EN EL PASADO

USED TO (solía, acostumbraba a)

Observa esta estructura gramatical: Subject + USED TO + verb

Robert used to live in the country.(Roberto solía vivir en el campo)

REGLAS BASICAS:

1) Puedes utilizar la forma infinitiva sin "to" del verbo BE después del sujeto pero no puedes utilizar las formas was, were, been o being del mismo verbo. Ejemplos:

I used to be a waiter when I was young. << correctoI used to was a waiter when I was young. << incorrecto

I used to be a waiter three years ago. << correctoI used to was a waiter three years ago. << incorrecto

2) Es incorrecto utilizar la forma básica o común del verbo use (usar).

BE USED TO (estar acostumbrado a)

Ahora presta atención a esta otra estructura: Subject + BE + USED TO > ING form

Robert was used to living in the country(Roberto estaba acostumbrado a vivir en el campo)

REGLAS BASICAS:

1) Si utilizas el verbo BE después de be used to, el verbo debe llevar el formatobeing. Ejemplos:

I was used to being a waiter when I was young. << correctoI was used to be a waiter when I was young. << incorrecto

2) No utilices un verbo sin ing form después de to.

3) Es incorrecto utilizar la forma básica o común del verbo use (usar).

a wish of being so... but it isn't. In IF sentences -and also after WISH- we alwaysuse WERE instead of WAS.

Se utiliza WERE en lugar de WAS cuando se expresan situaciones hipotéticas(suposiciones), es decir muy alejadas o diferentes de la situación real. Desde yaimplica el deseo de que así fuera... pero no lo es. En las oraciones IF (condicionales) -y también después de WISH- siempre usamos WERE en lugar de WAS.

SOME EXAMPLES:

If I were you, I wouldn't buy that coat. (... but I am not you)

(Si estuviera en tu lugar, no compraría ese abrigo... pro no estoy en tu lugar)

I would go out if it were not raining. (... but it is raining)

(Saldría si no estuviese lloviendo... pero está lloviendo)

I wish my bedroom were larger. (... but it's so small !!)

(Ojalá mi dormitorio fuese más grande... pero es tan pequeño!!)

I wish it were warm. (... but it's winter and I hate cold weather)

(Ojalá hiciese calor... pero es invierno y odio el tiempo frío)

FOR EACH SENTENCE WRITE A HYPOTHETICAL COMMENT.

1. I'm not going to buy that book because it's expensive.

But if that book wasn't expensive, I would buy it

.

(Pero si ese libro no fuese caro, lo compraría).

2. I am living in New York (and I hate this city).

I wishI wouldn't be l iving in Nueva York

.

(Ojalá no estuviese viviendo en Nueva York).
