Gearing UpIn this chapter, students will read some new vocabulary words. Use this

“Gearing Up” activity to help get repetitions of some of the key verb structures before you begin!

Vocabulary: agarra, mirar un programa, le dice, ganar(While it is up to the teacher to decide how to establish meaning of the new vocabulary, a fast and easy way is to use the English translation with each new word. Students will be able to glance quickly at the words to confirm meaning while maintaining engagement in the story.)

Instructions: Print each of the 4 vocabulary structures on a sentence strip or white sheet of paper. Student groups of 4 should each have a copy of the four papers. Read the Vocab in Context prompts and have student groups hold up the correct word to fill in the blank. To make it competitive, just keep score!

Alternative activity: Use individual white boards and have all students write the correct answer and hold it up. Points on an individual basis and kept in the corner of the white board.

Social Media ShareThe idea behind the Social Media Share activities is to target ACTFL’s 5th C, Communities. How can we encourage our students to use the target language both inside the classroom and out? While it would be difficult to make a social media assignment worth points, it is not difficult to keep students engaged in posting by projecting and sharing what they post for the class. Knowing that their photos, tweets, and replies may be displayed in class is a powerful motivator.

Instagram:Instagram is a social media app that allows users to share photos and like or comment on photos of the people they follow. It is common to post a photo with one (or several) hashtags. A typical hashtag begins with the number sign (now known as the hashtag) and a few words with no spacing. For example #Brandoneshonesto (for “Brandon es honesto”) or #Brandontiraelcelular (for “Brandon tira el celular”).

Have students use the blank page below to “take a picture” of Brandon from chapter 2. In the rectangle, they should use 4 hashtags to describe what the picture shows.
