Capt Richard Leonard, Commander MER-VA-108 Summer 2012 Editio

    FROM THE COMMANDERS DESKGreetings members:

Summer is upon us and as you are all well aware the heat and humidityoften times in summer is extreme in our area. When temperatures riseyou must constantly hydrate yourself in order not to fall victim to heatstroke or heat exhaustion. Cadets must be especially mindful whenperforming PT this time of year. If the temperature is to exceed 90 de-grees, cadets will not participate in outdoor physical testing so as not to

have heat related injuries. Remember, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

In August our unit is scheduled for a Unit Inspection. Over the courseof the next several weeks, each functional area of the Squadron mustensure that we are in compliance with all applicable CAP regulations.

Areas include Administration, Operations, Communications, Personnel,Cadet Programs and other areas. We will be having several extrameetings in order to ensure we are prepared for the upcoming inspec-tion. Each member of the Squadron is responsible for ensuring his/heruniform is in compliance and proper professional courtesy is extendedto members of the inspection team. All members must be current onSafety and have completed the CAP Introduction to Safety as this is a

critical area of the inspection in addition to being our most critical areathroughout the year. I have faith that our Squadron will be exemplary inall areas during this important inspection.

Congratulations to our Cadet Program which received the Quality Ca-det Squadron Award. Each of you did your part to fulfill the necessaryrequirements to earn this prestigious award. The Cadet Program lead-ership, both Seniors and Cadets did an outstanding job during the yearthus earning this award. Congratulations to each of you. I am ex-tremely proud of our Cadet Program and our cadets and parents.

Once again our Squadron performed in an

outstanding manner parking cars at the SullyStation Car Show. Each year we are askedto assist and earn $2,000.00 for the Squad-ron. This year your performance was recog-nized by the folks at Sully Station and the at-tendees alike. Teamwork was evident andthanks to your efforts, we successfully com-pleted the fundraiser without any injuries orissues. A Job well done to all who partici-pated in this event.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT:Lt. Col. Liz SydowBy C/TSgt Ian Woods, Alpha Element Leader

Lt. Col. Sydow was 11years old when she

joined the Civil Air Patrolcadet program. Her fa-ther who had been amember of CAP sinceher birth encouraged herto join the program. Be-fore becoming a CAPsenior member sheachieved the rank of Ca-det Colonel (Spaatz

Award). She said muchof her drive to succeedin CAP was because shewanted to prove to her-self she could accom-plish anything she sether mind to.

She used experience and knowledge gained from CAPto receive a ROTC scholarship for college. After gradu-ating, she became an officer in the United States AirForce and has risen to the rank of Colonel.

She believes that CAP gave her the confidence and theability to become the leader she is today. She wants allcadets to strive to achieve their goals and wants theFredericksburg Composite Squadron to be more pre-pared to complete the 3 missions on both the squadronlevel and national level.

She serves both senior members and cadets with herhard-earned Master Level Rating in Professional Devel-opment and Cadet Programs.

Through Colonel Sydow the Fredericksburg Composite

Squadron has a good model of leadership.

    CADET COMMANDERSCORNER

    By C/2dLt Daniel Sylvia

I feel like Im looking at a brand new squadron. Al-most six years ago when I joined Civil Air Patrol, our

squadron was a third as strong as it is today. Therehave been many changes, successes and stories, but we are still the same squadron.

My goal as Cadet Commander is to keep thissquadron on its path to greatness. I want to be ableto know each and every one of you. I want to un-derstand your personal goals for the next sixmonths and help you reach them.

As Cadet Commander, it is my responsibility to en-sure that you get the most out of your cadet experi-

ence. The Cadet Program is full of amazing oppor-tunities that I will strive to bring to our squadron. Ihave expectations for every cadet to representthemselves through Civil Air Patrols cadet oath, core values, and honor code.

We can become Americas future leaders if wefollow these basic principles. I also encourageeach cadet to takegreat value in develop-ing their leadershipskills along with their

    promotions in grade.

Always remember oursquadrons motto,Famam ExtendimusFactis, - we spread ourfame by our deeds. This is how the com-munity should know ofus.C/2dLt Rachel Sydow, a third generation CAP member,

THE GSAR COLLEGE EXPERIENCEBy C/TSgt Conor Roberson, Public Affairs NCOICThe first weekend of GSAR College was crammed with note tak-ing and classes. Years of experience came pouring out of Power-Points all within two sessions. After lunch it was back to thebooks. A class on knot tying distracted everyone from their handcramps. The evenings were more relaxed as the cadets quizzedeach other on notes, talked outside the barrack, or played guitar. On the last day Ground Team Members and Ground Team Lead-

ers came together to practice grid searching in the woods sur-rounding the barracks.

Much to everyones delight the second weekend at Fort Pickettwas more hands-on. However, there were also thoughts of thetests to come. The entire first day was spent out in the field. Thestudents, both ground team members (GTMs) and ground team

leader (GTLs),were broken intogroups andcompeted to lo-cate emergency

beacons in FortPicketts woods. At night the same teams were assembledto rescue a lost Lt. White. He was later located and hadto be evacuated on a litter. Thankfully they got him homeokay. Finally the day of testing had come. Everyone wasseated in the classroom and began their tests. Afterwardsstudents waited nervously for the results. Once everyonefound out their scores, cleanup and departure com-menced. On the way home the Fredericksburg cadetswere treated to a well deserved meal at Cicis pizza.

FROM PAGE 1Our next fundraiser is Wreaths across America. As you know, our Squadron donation isbased upon the total number of wreaths sold during the fundraiser. The more we sell the more money thatis donated to our Squadron. Lets make this year the best year so far. It only takes a little effort on our

part to support this worthy cause and earn valuable funds for the Squadron.

The reason our fundraising efforts are so important is that we receive no funding from the Virginia Wing,National Headquarters or the Air Force. The funds we raise must support the Squadron. Items such asuniforms, office supplies and Squadron activities must be paid for through these funds. This year we in-creased funding for cadet scholarships since we had been able to raise additional funds over the past year. Our Cadet Program is the largest recipient of our funds since our cadets are very important to our Squad-ron. The more funds we raise through these efforts, the more funding that is available to send cadets toencampment and other activities. Keep up the great work over the next few months in order to keep ourSquadron funds at acceptable levels.

This year we have had a large number of Squadron members who have completed Emergency Services

training. This enables us to provide ground teams and aircrews to support real world missions. Hopefullymore of our members will attend the training that is available which is valuable not just to CAP and ourcommunities, but to the individuals themselves.

Our new Cadet Command Staff has assumed command of the Cadet Program. I want to thank the previ-ous command staff for their outstanding leadership during their tenure. They performed admirably andtheir leadership and initiative was nothing short of exceptional. The Cadet Program continues to grow andthe quality of our cadets has improved immensely. Teamwork is the key as is proper leadership and guid-ance in continuing the outstanding program that we have in place. The senior member leadership has alsoperformed in an exemplary fashion providing outstanding support to our cadets. I wish to congratulate theprevious cadet command staff for their efforts and welcome our new command staff to their leadership po-sitions.

Lastly please remember that we are guests at the Fredericksburg Armory. We are able to utilize the facili-ties belonging to the National Guard and we must treat the facility with care and respect. We must ensurewhen we complete our meetings and training, the area is cleaner then it was when we arrived. We mustensure we put back any items we use, any chairs or tables we set up or move and be good guests. Ourwork in this area is necessary to retain use of the facility and more importantly reflects on our Squadron asa whole.

Remember safety is our number one priority in all that we do.

I recently created a mobile app for our squadron. Thisnew app will allow members of our squadron to have one-site access to Squadron Tweets, Squadron YouTubeChannel Videos, Squadron Facebook Page Photos, andGeneral Squadron Contact information. In order to loadthe app on your ipod/iphone, you must first open yourbrowser and type in the following web address:www.fburgcap.mobapp.at This will bring up the appthat you can then save to your home screen. Androids willneed to go to the web address above, then your phone/tablet will automatically start the installation. However, theinstallation may not finish without allowing non-marketapps to be installed in your settings, if so, you must re-start the installation. Messages will still go out via eser-vices email and yahoogroups email but we will try totweet important things as well for easy access to quickinformation regarding meeting agendas, uniforms of theweek, etc.

We will still have a Facebook Group that is private toFacebook-user squadron members only but the mobileapp will link to our Public Squadron Facebook Page fornon-Facebook users that we can send recruits to in orderto view photos and videos of our activities and generalsquadron information.
