Quienes viajan a Medelln por vez primera vez, presos

en la fiesta que all despliegan los colores, en el con-

cierto sutil que surge de la suma de todos los soni-

dos y merced a los rastros de una historia cultural y humana que

encarna en las calles y avenidas honda, expresiva, multiforme,

sienten que han llegado a uno de los sitios ms inolvidables de

toda Colombia y entienden por qu se trata de una regin cata-

Medelln es un sueo en flor, cuyos

ptalos se alzan como montaas

y dulce. Un sueo colectivo del que hacen par-

te todos aquellos que imaginaron esta ciudad

que los recibe.

La cercana con el campo est presente en

los paisas, que no pasan mucho sin darse una

vuelta por sus alrededores y respirar naturale-

za. Y no solo un clima primaveral los acompa-

a todo el ao; lo hace tambin la floricultura

que se produce en las veredas cercanas, her-

mosas notas multicolores que se exportan al

mundo entero.

Feria de alegra

Y fue hace ms de cincuenta aos cuando los

campesinos de la vereda Santa Elena, que ba-

jaban desde tiempo atrs a la Placita de Florez

a llevar sus ramilletes frescos, fueron invita-

dos para hacer el primer evento de exhibicin

de estos cultivos en la ciudad, que luego se remontara a la gran

feria internacional que es hoy. Ellos se preparan todo el ao

para montar la seleccin de sus mejores productos en soportes

que llevan a sus espaldas, como acostumbraban sus abuelos, y

es lo que se conoce como silletas, que pueden alcanzar tama-

os monumentales y que llevan con orgullo ante los aplausos

de los asistentes que los reciben como hroes.

Sin duda, el Desfile de Silleteros, que se celebra todos los agos-

tos, es el evento central de la Feria de las Flores. All, miles de

personas se renen en una gran manifestacin de la cultura

paisa, acompaada de artistas, msicos, grupos de danza, cabal-

gatas, desfiles y actividades que se llevan a cabo en las calles y

plazas de toda la ciudad.

Por su parte, el Jardn Botnico es la sede de algunas de las acti-

vidades imperdibles de la feria. Ya adentro, hay que visitar el Or-

quideorama, con una variada gama de orqudeas y otras flores

propias de la regin.

Toda esta fiesta proviene de la ciudad, de todo lo que la com-

pone, y es para compartirse con alegra. All no hay visitantes,

todos son parte de este corazn floreciente que es Medelln.

Medellin is a dream in bloom; its petals rise like moun-

tains surrounding this magnificent and sweet valley

bursting with nice people. The pervasive year-round

spring weather warrants its apt designation as the City of Eter-

nal Spring, as do the flowers produced in the nearby villages, lo-

vely multicolored hues that are exported throughout the world.

Fair of Joy

It was over fifty years ago that the Santa Elena village farmers

who for ages have come down to the Placita de Florez bringing

their fresh bouquetswere invited to showcase these crops in a

special event in the city, which later turned into the great inter-

national fair it is today.

It is a yearlong preparation to assemble the best selection of

their products to be borne on their backs on supports known

today as silletas or chairlets, as their forerunners did before

them, that can reach monumental sizes and which are carried

with pride before audiences applauding them as heroes.

Undoubtedly the Silleteros Parade, held every August, is the

central event of the Festival of Flowers, and it is not for gran-

ted. There, thousands of people gather in a huge demonstra-

tion of paisa culture, accompanied by artists, musicians, dance

groups, cavalcades, parades and activities in the streets and

squares of the city.

Diversity

Naturally, some of the major fair activities occur in the Joaqun

Antonio Uribe Botanical Garden. Once inside, you must visit the

Orchid dome, which showcases a great variety of orchids and

other exotic flowers of the region. Fanciful shapes and colors

are part of this exquisite show.

This fiesta originates in the city and in everything that compri-

ses Medellin, and it is to be shared with joy. Nobody is a visitor

here; all are part of this thriving heart that is Medellin.

verde de coquetas montaas que

apuntan a un sonriente cielo. El pasado y el

presente se entrelazan y se hacen evidentes

con construcciones eclcticas que mudan de

barrio a barrio, y le dan vida a nuevas y sofis-

ticadas zonas empresariales. Una muestra de

ello, son el tradicional cerro Nutibara con el re-

tazo histrico que es el Pueblito Paisa, reminis-

cencia de la vida tpica de nuestros abuelos; y

el cerro El Volador, un espacio renovado con in-

teresantes rutas arqueolgicas y ecotursticas,

donde el horizonte de la ciudad se conecta con

los indgenas que la habitaron originalmente.

Desde el cerro-mirador se aprecia a plenitud

cmo serpentea el metro de extremo a extre-

mo del Valle. Este destacado medio de trans-

porte es sinnimo de calidad de vida y pro-

greso, y con sus extensiones de metrocable

(telefricos que llegan a los habitantes de los

sectores menos favorecidos en las empinadas

laderas), ha sido un protagonista importante

en la transformacin social lograda en los lti-

mos aos en la capital antioquea.

De hecho, las lneas del metrocable han tras-

cendido su importancia de medio masivo de

transporte, para convertirse en verdaderos

lefricos se aprecia la inmensidad de la ciudad,

mientras lleva a propios y extraos a espacios

educativos y culturales, merecedores de reco-

nocimientos internacionales, como los parques-

bibliotecas Espaa y San Javier, al nororiente y

al occidente de la ciudad, respectivamente.

Una visita obligada, sin duda, es el centro

de la ciudad, al que se puede llegar a travs

como el majestuoso Palacio de la Cultura.

Y muy cerca de aqu, se pueden apreciar exhibiciones de talen-

tosos artistas nacionales e internacionales en el Museo de Arte

Moderno, siempre activo y sorprendente. Para los amantes del

cosmos, el Parque de los Deseos ofrece unas muestras sobre

astronoma y la relacin histrica del hombre con el universo.

Contiguo est el Planetario Municipal, para que el contacto con

las estrellas sea aun ms cercano.

El majestuoso Parque Explora est ms al norte, cerca al campus

de la Universidad de Antioquia. Es un centro interactivo de cien-

cia y tecnologa para inquietos de todas las edades, poseedor

del acuario ms grande de agua dulce de Latinoamrica. A pocos

metros de all se encuentra un oasis de paz vegetal: el Jardn Bo-

tnico, un espacio abierto que estimula momentos de armona

con la naturaleza, en el que se refugia uno de los sitios icnicos

de Medelln: el Orquideorama, que brinda la oportunidad de co-

nocer la inexplicable belleza de las orqudeas.

Cuando se hace necesario un momento de paz y armona, ah

est El Parque de los Pies Descalzos, con sus jardines zen que

invitan a los visitantes a despojarse de los zapatos para cami-

nar entre bambes y sobre piedrecillas relajantes. Desde all se

observa el edificio inteligente de las Empresas Pblicas de Me-

delln, una de las entidades ms destacadas de Latinoamrica.

Y para finalizar esta breve resea de los muchos lugares para

conocer, estn el Teatro Metropolitano y Plaza Mayor, donde se

dan los ms importantes eventos de la ciudad. No obstante, es

preciso detenerse antes en la Plaza de la Alpujarra para admi-

rar las variadas esculturas y obras de arte, grandes y pequeas,

como la Plaza de la Luz y el Monumento a la Raza.

Esta es Medelln, una ciudad pletrica de sitios para visitar y de

barrios emblemticos, como El Poblado, Laureles y Estadio, con

sus encantos tradicionales y sus proyecciones hacia el futuro.

Medellin is established in the Aburr Valley, surroun-

ded by a green horizon of dainty mountains poin-

ting to a beaming sky. Past and present intertwi-

ne and emerge with eclectic constructions that come up from

neighborhood to neighborhood, and give life to sophisticated

new business areas.

An example of this are the traditional Nutibara hill, featuring

the historical remnant that is the Pueblito Paisa, reminiscent of

the typical life of our forefathers, and El Volador hill, a renova-

ted space with interesting archaeological and ecotourism tours,

where the city horizon line connects to the Indians who lived

there originally.

From the hill viewpoint you can fully appreciate how the metro

meanders from one end of the Valley to the other. In fact, the

metro cable lines have transcended their importance of mass-

transport to become true tourist icons. From these cable car

booths, the vastness of the city sprawls before the onlooker,

while carrying locals and outsiders to educational and cultu-

ral spaces, recipients of international recognition, such as the

library-parks Espaa and San Javier, to the northeast and west

of the city, respectively.

A must, without a doubt, is downtown, which can be reached

through the modern metro. There we find the heavy-set sculp-

tures of universal artist Fernando Botero, at the Plazoleta Bote-

ro. And, surrounding this temple of culture, in open air we find

both the beautiful Museum of Antioquia, which tells the story

of the province since before its inception until today, and majes-

tic Palace of Culture.

And very close by, you can see exhibits of talented national and

international artists at the Museum of Modern Art, always acti-

ve and surprising. For lovers of the cosmos, Wishing Park offers

samples of astronomy and the historical man - universe relation-

ship. The Municipal Planetarium is adjacent, for contact with the

stars to be even closer.

Majestic Parque Explora is further north, near the University

of Antioquia campus. It is a science and technology interactive

center for the curious of all ages, bearing the largest freshwater

aquarium in Latin America. A few meters away is a peaceful

plant oasis: the Botanical Garden, an open space that inspires

moments of harmony with nature, taking refuge in one of the

iconic places of Medellin: the Orchid dome, which provides an

opportunity to experience the inexplicable splendor of orchids.

When you crave a moment of peace and harmony, theres Barefoot

Park, with Zen gardens that invite visitors to shed their shoes and

stroll between bamboo areas over relaxing pebbles. From there

you can see the smart building of the Medellin Public Utilities.

And to conclude this brief review of the many places to visit are

the Metropolitan Theater and Plaza Mayor, where the most im-

portant events in the city take place. Before, however, you must

stop at the Alpujarra Square to admire the many sculptures and

artwork, such as Plaza de la Luz and the Monument to the Race.

This is Medellin, a city replete with places to visit and with land-

mark neighborhoods such as El Poblado, Laureles and Estadio

with their traditional charm and their projections to the future.

After winning many battles in the past, today Medellin

is a case study where representatives from various

countries come here to learn of social strategies, pu-

blic interventions and city management. The efficient transport

service, renewed public spaces, prestigious schools and artistic

and cultural events, accompanied by a strong business and tra-

de sector, have created a better quality of life for its inhabitants,

to the point where, in 2012, Medellin was distinguished in the

Smart Cities Global Awards.

Thousands of visitors keep returning to Medellin. For example,

the Flower Fair attracts some 18,000 visitors. Meanwhile, the

again, under a sea of lights; an event that generates wealth to

La cocina paisa es deliciosamente tradicional. En ella

productos autctonos de las tierras montaeras,

cordillera andina.

Antioquia ha popularizado en todo el pas la bandeja paisa, una

generosa vianda que viene con siesta incluida. Frjoles, arroz,

maduro, aguacate, chorizo, hogao y hasta ensalada, se distri-

cocidos en leche y acompaados de panela rallada.

La arepa est siempre presente. Es un redondo pan de maz asa-

tes. De las abuelas vienen recetas de sopas como el mondongo

The paisa cuisine is delightfully tradi-

tional. Native products of the moun-

tains simmer here, preferably on wood

stoves, and accompanied with ingredients that

are no longer exotic, given their easy adapta-

tion to the climatic zones of the rugged Andes.

Antioquia has popularized the paisa tray na-

tionwide, a bountiful meal that comes with a

nap. Beans, rice, ground beef, pork rind, rice,

fried egg, slices of ripe plantain, avocado, sau-

sage, hogao salsa and even salad are dispensed

appetizingly and colorfully on a large oval plat-

ter. The paisa tray is served with peeled corn

porridge, which is cooked in milk and served in

a cup with grated panela (brown sugar).

The arepa is always present. It is a round grilled

corn meal patty served with any dish, with

butter, and cheese, but it also can also be the

main course as a support for any variety of in-

gredients. Grandmothers have handed down

recipes such as mondongo (tripe soup) and san-

cocho (hearty soup), which, along with beans,

are often the center of many family dinners.

La Capital de la Montaa est asentada en el Valle de

Aburr. Sin darse cuenta, el viajero puede abandonar la

ciudad y adentrarse a otros municipios, que ms parecen

barrios, pero que no pierden su carcter propio de pueblo monta-

ero. Envigado, Itag, La Estrella, Caldas, Bello, Copacabana, Gi-

rardota y Barbosa conforman el rea Metropolitana de Medelln.

Para iniciar el paseo, est el Parque Arv, un santuario natural

encaramado en el corregimiento de Santa Elena, arropado por

la niebla y por un fresco clima. Para llegar aqu solo hay que

abordar el metrocable en la zona norte. Lo cierto es que desde

todos los puntos cardinales de la ciudad, se desprenden recorri-

dos agradables.

La Ruta del Sol

A pocos kilmetros de la ciudad, el Tnel de Occidente, el ms

hculos de los viajeros para llevarlos a la regin donde el Sol se es-

La Vuelta a Oriente

Esta ruta de clima fresco y comidas tpicas serpentea por la Va

Las Palmas y se interna en los paisajes idlicos del oriente antio-

queo; pasa luego por el corregimiento de Santa Elena, para re-

gresar al norte de la ciudad. La recomendacin es desprenderse

de este circuito y viajar hasta Guarne, Marinilla, El Peol, San Ra-

fael, San Carlos y Granada, municipios que se ubican en los alrede-

fincas productoras de caf, en los municipios

de Caldas, Amag, Fredonia, Ciudad Bolvar y

Jeric. El regalo mejor guardado de esta ruta

es Jardn, la ciudad ms bella y pacfica de An-

tioquia, con su enorme iglesia y sus casas y so-

The Capital of the Mountain is posi-

tioned on the Aburr Valley. Unsus-

pecting travelers may leave the city

and not realize that they are venturing into

other municipalities; they may seem neighbor-

hoods but they still cling to their mountain

town character. Envigado, Itag, La Estrella,

Caldas, Bello, Copacabana, Girardota and Bar-

bosa are towns that make up the Metropolitan

Area of Medellin.

To start the surrounding tour, there is Arvi Park,

settled up in the village of Santa Elena. This

wildlife sanctuary is swathed in a fog and cool

climate. To reach this place you only need to

board the metrocable in the north. These pleasant paths emerge

in all areas of the city to make your stay even more enjoyable.

The Tour of the East

This route winds along the way to Las Palmas and delves into

the idyllic backdrops of eastern Antioquia, amidst cool weather

and typical food, then passes through the village of Santa Elena,

to return north of the city. However, the recommendation is to

depart from this circuit and travel to Guarne, Marinilla, El Peol,

San Rafael, San Carlos and Granada, municipalities that are lo-

cated around large reservoirs. Outstanding here is the Peol

Rock, an impressive monolith that rises 220 meters above the

ground. This trip would not be complete without a visit to Rione-

gro, La Ceja and El Retiro, with a rich colonial architecture.

The Coffee Route

The southwest of Medellin is dotted with rich cold, warm and

hot lands, including precious coffee farms in the towns of Cal-

das, Amaga, Fredonia, Ciudad Bolivar and Jerico. The best-kept

secret on this route is Jardn, the most gorgeous and peaceful

city in Antioquia, with its colossal church, homes and expanses

that live up to their name.

The Sun Route

A few kilometers from the city, the Tunnel of the West, the lon-

gest and most modern in Latin America, literally engulfs trav-

elers vehicles to take them to the picturesque region where the

sun goes down. Sopetrn and San Jernimo are the first munici-

palities welcoming folks to a land rich in fruits and landscapes,

and luscious green. Miles below is the beautiful colonial town of

Santa Fe de Antioquia.
