Comenzamos el año nuevo celebrando la introducción de la propuesta legislativa del Congresista Gutiérrez para una legalización justa conocida Como el Acto del 2009 por la Reforma Inmigratoria Comprensiva para la Prosperidad y Seguridad de America o CIR ASAP (HR 4321).

A base de muchas llamadas de parte de residentes en Milwaukee la Congresista Moore de Milwaukee es nuestra primera representante federal de co-patrocinar esta legislación tan esperada. De acuerdo a la recepcionista en la oficina de la Congresista Moore “explotaron las líneas telefónicas y se lleno el buzón de mensajes” en solamente una hora.

Para que la propuesta de Gutiérrez se convierta en ley se necesita obtener una mayoría de votos, 218 votos, en la Cámara de Representantes para darle vida a esta propuesta legislativa. En el Senado la legislación es anticipa ser introducida a fines de enero o en febrero. En el lado del senado se necesita 60 votos. Una vez que hay un acuerdo entre las dos versiones del Senado y la Cámara de Representantes, pasa al escritorio del Presidente. Es decir, es una de campaña nacional de llegar a un total de 279 votos incluyendo el voto del presidente.

En Wisconsin, nuestra tarea para contribuir al movimiento nacional es de conseguir seis votos más de nuestros Congresistas; llamándoles o escribiéndoles pidiendo que “co-patrocinen la propuesta de Gutiérrez para la reforma inmigratoria”.

Cuando llame a la oficina de su representante debe dar su nombre y apellido, dirección incluyendo código postal, y mensaje. No importa su estatus inmigratoria lo que es importante es que viva en el distrito del representante. En algunos casos, es necesario mandar una comunicación escrita en inglés o dar un mensaje simple en inglés por teléfono si no tiene alguien que habla español.

I am writing to ask for your co-sponsorship of C.I.R. A.S.A.P. HR 4321. Thousands of Wisconsin’s families have been trapped in a failed system of laws that cruelly separates family members, many

of which include US citizen children and spouses; leading to psychological trauma and economic hardship. CIR ASAP (HR 4321) is a bill that protects both workers and families.

It is also an important opportunity to help boost the economy. As a recently released study, "Raising the Floor for American Workers, The Economic Benefits of Comprehensive Immigration Reform” by the Center for American Progress and the Immigration Policy Center demonstrates; legalization of America's undocumented immigrants will result in $1.5 trillion in economic growth over the next 10 years, lift the wages of native born workers, and create hundreds of thousands of jobs.

A key industry for Wisconsin - the dairy industry- reports that immigrants represent 40% of its workforce and are an essential workforce to our State.

We are writing to ask for your support for a federal fix that is long overdue. We believe this bill represents that fix. Please co-sponsor HR 4321.

We start the New Year celebrating the introduction of Congressman Gutierrez’s legislative proposal for a just legalization known as the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2009 for America’s Security and Prosperity or CIR ASAP (HR 4321).

Due to the many calls made by Milwaukee residents, Congresswoman Moore is the first federal representative to co-sponsor this long awaited legislation. According to the receptionist at Congresswoman Moore’s office, “the lines were exploding and the voice mail was full” in just one hour.

To turn Gutierrez’s legislative proposal into law we need to reach a majority of votes in the House of Representatives, 218 votes, to breathe life into this bill. In the Senate, the legislation is expected to be introduced at the end of January or in February. On the Senate side, 60 votes are needed. Once there is a final version between the Senate and House versions; the bill moves to the President’s desk. That is to say, the national campaign is to achieve a total of 279 votes; including the President’s vote.

In Wisconsin, our task to contribute to the national movement is to get six more votes of our Congressional representatives; calling them or writing them and asking them “to cosponsor the Gutierrez bill for immigration reform.”

When you call the office of your elected official give your first and last name, address including zip code, and message. Your immigration status is not important; what is important is that you live in the district of your representative. In some cases, it is necessary to send your verbal or written communication in

English if there is no staff that speaks Spanish.

What is happening with the commercial licenses?

On January 5, 2010 the License Committee took the decision to not pass (put on file) an ordinance which would have required a verification of immigration status process for any person or business that wants to renew or obtain a business or professional license from the City of Milwaukee. This initiative is by the State Attorney Van Hollen and the City Attorney Langley who ran their election campaign on an anti-immigrant platform.

This positive result was a result of a meeting at Voces de la Frontera between local business owners and members of the License Committee, representatives from the Mayor’s office and Alderman Witkowiak.

However, the problem has not yet been resolved because independently of the City Council the City Attorney Langley wrote a letter on December 3 stating that he would continue to purse this matter; demanding at a minimum a sworn declaration from an applicant of business or professional license regarding their immigration status.

If this were to take effect Milwaukee would be one of a handful of cities in the nation that enforces this policy. Currently, we are collecting signatures from business owners throughout the city to invite the City Attorney to a meeting on February 13. ¿Que esta pasando con el asunto de las licencias comerciales?

El 5 de enero del 2010 el Comité de Licencias tomo la decisión de no pasar (“place on file”) una ordenanza cual hubiera requerido un proceso de verificación de estatus migratorio para cualquier persona o negocio que quería renovar u obtener un permiso comerciante o profesional de la Ciudad de Milwaukee. Este iniciativo es por el Abogado Estatal Van Hollen y el Abogado de la Ciudad Langley que corrieron sus elecciones con una plataforma anti-inmigrante.

Este resultado positivo fue a base de una reunión en Voces de La frontera entre varios comerciantes locales y representantes del Comité de Licencias, la oficina del alcalde Barrett, y el Concejal Witkowiak.

Pero aun no el problema no esta resuelto porque independientemente

del cónsul de la Ciudad de Milwaukee, el abogado de la ciudad Langley escribió una carta el 3 de diciembre indicando que seguirá con este iniciativo; exigiendo, al mínimo, una declaración de un solicitante para una licencia comercial o profesional acerca de su estatus inmigratorio.

Ayuno en Solidaridad-Jill Vonnahme, Coordinadora del Movimiento Nuevo Santuario

Desde el primero de enero, miembros de la comunidad del Nuevo Movimiento de Santuario en el sur de Florida empezaron un ayuno para levantar conciencia de nuestra necesidad desesperada de una reforma inmigratoria. Lo están haciendo como una parte de un movimiento llamado “Ayune Para Nuestras Familias.” Ese mismo día, un grupo de estudiantes apasionados y dedicados empezaron “El Camino de Sueños.” Los cuatro estudiantes están caminando 1,500 millas desde el sur de Florida hasta Washington DC, esperando llegar en cuatro meses. Al llegar a la capital, los estudiantes buscaran reuniones con líderes políticos y cívicos, reunirse en mítines y vigilias, y se comunicaran con la prensa—movilizando apoyo para reforma inmigratoria. Solidarity Fast-Jill Vonnahme, New Sanctuary Movement Coordinator

As of January 1st, members of the New Sanctuary Movement community in South Florida began fasting to raise awareness of our desperate need for comprehensive immigration reform. They are doing so as part of a coordinated movement called “Fast For Our Families.” That same day, a group of passionate and dedicated students began the “Trail of Dreams.” The four students are walking the 1,500 miles from Southern Florida to Washington DC, hoping to arrive in four months. Upon their arrival to Washington, the students will be seeking meetings with political and civic leaders, joining in rallies and vigils, and reaching out to the media - galvanizing support for immigration policy reform in communities that might otherwise be without a voice. Those “Fasting For Our Families,” now numbering seven with the addition of Immigrant Rights leader Jean Montrevil, who fasts from his jail cell while fighting his own deportation to Haiti, have consumed only liquids since their last meal on December 31st, and will continue to do so indefinitely. They are

doing so until the Obama administration “agrees to use its executive authority to stop separating immigrant families while awaiting a resolution of our broken immigration system.” They are also calling President Obama to send Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, to South Florida to hear about the struggle and why we need to take such a drastic step for the safety of our families.

In order to stand in solidarity with our friends in Florida, members of the New Sanctuary Movement in Milwaukee will be fasting every Friday until the demands of those in Florida are met. In addition to fasting, we will meet every Friday evening from 6:00 to 6:30 at Church and Chapel (19th & Becher) for group prayer. We hope that many of you will join us in support of our brave friends in Florida.

Aguantando velas, reunidos en el frío frente a la oficina de Voces de la Frontera miembros de Voces y el Movimiento Nuevo Santuario cantaron líricas con las melodías de los himnos de posadas. Ellos se reunieron para celebrar Las Posadas, la celebración tradicional de nueve días la cual vuelve a representar le búsqueda de alojo de María y José después de su viaje a Belén. Cada una de las nueve noches, grupos de personas viajan a casas designadas o iglesias y en la canción piden “posada”.

El 18 de diciembre, el Día Internacional del Migrante, representantes de Voces y el Movimiento Nuevo Santuario llevaron tarjetas firmadas por gente de fe pidiendo una reforma inmigratoria comprensiva a las oficinas del Senador Kohl y Feingold, y de la Congresista Moore. Cada visita comenzó con la música tradicional de Posadas y las tarjetas fueron entregadas por niños vestidos como María y José. Muchas personas hablaron con los representantes de los Senadores y de la Congresista explicando que su fe les pide que sean hospitalarios con los inmigrantes en nuestro país. Adicionalmente Deisi Puerto, Herlinda Damian y Alejandra Acevedo dieron testimonios personales de cómo las presentes leyes de inmigración han separado a sus familias causando un gran dolor.

Durante la celebración de Las Posadas en Voces más tarde esa noche, fueron pronunciados los nombres de los detenidos y deportados mientras el grupo

caminaban hacia la puerta de Voces para pedir “posada”. Después de cada nombre la multitud dirigida por niños vestidos como María y José, dijeron juntos: “¡presente!”. Después de que la Posada terminó, todos reunidos celebraron juntos y los niños cerraron la noche rompiendo una piñata. Para todos, la noche fue un recordatorio que como María y José vagaron en busca de hospitalidad, nosotros somos llamados a ofrecer a los inmigrantes en nuestra comunidad una calurosa bienvenida.

Holding candles, gathered in the cold outside of the office doors of Voces

de la Frontera, members of Voces and the New Sanctuary Movement sang these lyrics to the tune of the traditional Posadas hymn. They gathered to celebrate Las Posadas, the traditional nine day celebration which reenacts Mary and Joseph seeking lodging after their journey to Bethlehem. Each of the nine nights, groups of people travel to designated homes or churches and in song, ask for “posada.”

On December 18th, International Migrants Day, representatives from Voces and the New Sanctuary Movement delivered postcards signed by people of faith calling for comprehensive immigration reform to the offices of Senators Kohl and Feingold, and Congresswoman Moore. Each visit began with traditional Posadas music and the postcards were presented by children dressed as Mary and Joseph. Many people spoke to representatives of the Senators and Congresswoman explaining that their faith calls them to be hospitable to the immigrants in our country. Additionally, Deisi Puerto, Herlinda Damian and Alejandra Acevedo all gave personal testimony to how current immigration law has broken up their families and caused them great pain.

During the celebration of Las Posadas at Voces later that evening, names of the detained and deported were called out as the gathered crowd processed to the doors of Voces to ask for “posada.” After each name was called, the crowd, led by children dressed as Mary and Joseph, said together, “presente!” calling present all of those who have been affected by unjust immigration laws. After the Posada had finished, those gathered celebrated together and the children ended the night by breaking a piñata. For all, the night was a reminder that like Mary and Joseph wandered in search for hospitality, we are called to offer the immigrants in our community a warm welcome.

de Arpaio no es nuestra América” fue el tema del Día Nacional de Acción organizado el 16 de enero en Phoenix por el National Day Laborers Network. Miles de personas pertenecientes a iglesias, uniones y organizaciones de la comunidad alrededor del país marcharon en Phoenix para detener la campaña de terror contra Latinos y otras comunidades de color por el Alguacil Joe Arpaio del Condado de Maricopa (Phoenix, AZ), conducidas en nombre de la aplicación de leyes de inmigración. Dolores Huerta y otros líderes laborales y cívicos hablaron en contra de las masivas redadas por parte de Arpaio y su persecución en los vecindarios de los Latinos y Nativos Americanos.

“Es la primera vez desde los días de Bull Connor que este país ha visto a un oficial público abusar de su autoridad, aterrorizar e intimidar a las comunidades por causa del color de su piel”, dijo la página de la Internet del National Day Laborers Network. “El odio y extremismo que el Alguacil Arpaio crea es sentido desde Phoenix hasta Washington D.C. Después de que 5,000 personas inmigrantes marcharon el pasado Febrero en contra de la persecución ilegal y de discriminación, por parte de Arpaio, la División de Derechos Civiles del Departamento de Justicia de EEUU comenzó una investigación en relación a miles de querellas por el uso del perfil racial y discriminación contra su oficina. Arpaio tiene la política de

separar a los Latinos-incluyendo a esos que son ciudadanos-de los otros prisioneros, obligando a que los hombres marchen fuera en ropa interior rosada, encadenando sus muñecas, cintura y tobillos afuera frente a los medios noticiosos. El hace que ellos duerman a la intemperie en una “ciudad de tiendas” en vez de camas en la cárcel.

Este pasado verano el gobierno comenzó a investigar a Arpaio y su oficina por abuso de poder contra sus oponentes políticos, los que han hablado en contra de él, y la pasada semana el Departamento de Justicia reunió un gran jurado federal para determinar si hay causa probable para enjuiciarlo por fraude y retaliación ilegal contra oficiales del condado y el Alcalde de Phoenix por criticar sus acciones.

Las demandas en la marcha incluyen:

National Day Of Action In Phoenix Demands An End To Sheriff Arpaio’s Reign Of Terror

America Is NOT Our America” was the theme of a National Day of Action organized on January 16 in Phoenix by the National Day Laborers Network. Thousands of people from churches, unions and community organizations around the country marched in Phoenix in order to stop Maricopa County (Phoenix, AZ) Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s campaign of terror against Latinos and other communities of color, conducted in the name of immigration enforcement. Dolores Huerta and other labor and civil rights leaders spoke out against Arpaio’s massive raids and sweeps through Latino and Native American neighborhoods.

“Not since the days of Bull Connor has this country seen a public official abuse his authority in order to terrorize and intimidate communities based on the color of their skin,” the National Day Laborers Network’s website stated. “The hatred and extremism that Sheriff Arpaio breeds is felt from Phoenix to Washington, D.C. It is an extremism that, left unchallenged, threatens to disrupt communities, destroy lives, and undermine bedrock constitutional protections for us all.”

After 5,000 people marched

against Arpaio’s illegal and discriminatory persecution of immigrants last February, the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Justice Department began an investigation of his office of thousands of complaints of racial profiling and discrimination against his office. Arpaio has a policy of separating

Latinos—including those who are U.S. citizens—from all other inmates, parading the men outdoors in pink underwear, shackling their wrists, waists and ankles in chains outdoors in front of the news media. He makes them sleep in an outdoor “tent city” instead of on beds in the jail.

This past summer the FBI began investigating Arpaio and his office for abuse of power against his political opponents, who have spoken out against him, and last week the Justice Department convened a federal grand jury to determine if there is probable cause to prosecute him for fraud and illegal retaliation against county officials and the mayor of Phoenix for criticizing his actions.

The demands of the march included:

• Termination of Arpaio’s 287(g) contract, which grants him federal immigration law enforcement authority.

• An end to the controversial 287(g) program, the so-called “Secure Communities” initiative, and others that spread racial profiling and civil rights abuses across the nation.

• An end to criminalization of migrants and communities of color in the name of immigration enforcement.

• An end to family separation. • The passage of comprehensive

immigration reform legislation that provides legal status and political quality to undocumented immigrants.

• A restitution of constitutional rights to all people.

el mundo celebraban la Navidad, también hubo una conexión histórica con el Censo. El 22 de diciembre, el Pastor Ken Wheeler, Cross Lutheran Church y Christian Community Caucus de Milwaukee se reunieron con otros nueve representantes de las iglesias para enseñar la oportunidad especial que la gente de fe puede demostrar para el Censo 2010.

El Pastor Ken Wheeler, de Cross Lutheran Church se ocupó de acentuar está conexión diciendo, “El evangelio de Lucas en el segundo Capítulo nos dice como María y José viajaron desde Galilea hasta Belén por causa del Censo Romano. Aún, en ese entonces nosotros debemos ver quienes fueron dejados afuera:los pastores que estaban velando su manada esa noche. Nosotros, como los pastores, somos los que tenemos mas riesgo porque no hemos sido contados en la totalidad-especialmente hombres Afro-Americanos e inmigrantes”. Él continúo diciendo que el Censo 2010 “es una buena noticia porque trae finanzas a nuestras comunidades para hospitales, carreteras para transporte educación, alimentos y desarrollo económico. Existe un valor en cada persona… Llene el Censo y sea contado”. Cada persona

contada trae aproximadamente $12,000 a sus comunidades para los próximos diez años.

El Pastor Walter Baires, de la Ascension Lutheran Church del lado Sur de Milwaukee también habló de la importancia de que la población Latina sea contada. Él quiere que los inmigrantes sepan que nadie debe ser dejado sin contar y que nadie tiene que temer sobre lo que va a pasar si llenan el formulario. Es seguro y confidencial. celebrated Christmas, there was also an historical connection to the census. On December 22, Pastor Ken Wheeler, Cross Lutheran Church and Christian Community Caucus of Milwaukee gathered together with nine other church representatives to show the special opportunity people of faith can demonstrate for Census 2010.

Pastor Ken Wheeler, Cross Lutheran Church emphasized the Christmas connection by saying, “The Gospel of Luke in the 2nd Chapter tells us how Mary and Joseph traveled from Galilee to Bethlehem because of a Roman census. Even then we must look at who was left out – the shepherds watching their flock by night. We, like the shepherds, are the highest risks because we are usually undercounted- especially African American men and immigrants.” He went on to say that the 2010 Census “is good news because it brings finances into our communities for hospitals, transportation roads, education, food, and economic development. There is value in every person. ..Fill out the census and be counted.” Each person

counted brings approximately $12,000 to their community over the next 10 years.

Pastor Walter Baires, Ascension Lutheran Church of Milwaukee’s south side also spoke about the significance of the Latino population being counted. He wants immigrants to know that no one should be left out and no one has to fear what will happen by completing the form. It is safe and confidential. It cannot be shared with immigration, the police, employers or landlords. District Superintendent, Jorge Luis Mayorga of the United Methodist Church concluded, “The goal is simple…The task is challenging because people will not think it is important. We are here to tell you that you do count. We are here to tell that you are important. We are here to tell you not fear but rather believe that something good will come out of this. Fill out the census and everybody wins.”

The Census counts everyone who is living in the U.S. – regardless of citizenship. The forms will be mailed to households in March 2010 and must be mailed back on or before April 1, 2010. For more information, call Voces de la Frontera at 414.643.1620.

organization has come to life in Milwaukee. Students from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Marquette University have been meeting as of November of 2009 to

establish a new chapter of MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán).

MEChA was founded on the principles of self-determination for the liberation of Chicano people. Mechistas believe that political involvement and education is the avenue for change in our society. On campuses, MEChA and Mechistas are among the only groups on campus Raza and non-Raza alike that seek to open the doors of higher education for our communities and strive for a society free of imperialism, racism, sexism, and homophobia.

Some of the current topics of discussion for Milwaukee Mechistas are: accessing higher education,

university student retention, encouraging and supporting new programs that focus on Latino studies at

the university and other topics such as, immigration reform work and involvement in the CIW (Coalition of Immokalee Workers) campaigns for farm and food workers, that demand

fair wages and better working conditions for our people.

The new student chapter, MEChA de Milwaukee is currently led by students also involved in SUFRIR

(Students United for Immigrant Rights). SUFRIR is the student youth sector that works alongside Voces de la Frontera for higher education issues, such as the DREAM Act and the current fight for Comprehensive Immigration Reform.

Milwaukee Mechistas believe that this is a great opportunity to reach out to all students, regardless of whether they've ever been involved in anything in the past. Our issues deal specifically with problems within our communities. We acknowledge that we are the ones that will have to deal with the consequences. We must act now. With policies and so many new changes happening, this is the ideal time to learn, grow and prepare to secure a better future for all Chicanos/ Latinos in the United States.

estudiantil ha nacido. Estudiantes de la Universidad de Wisconsin-Milwaukee y la Universidad de Marquette se han estado reuniendo desde Noviembre 2009 para establecer un nuevo capitulo de MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán).

MEChA dfue fundado con los principios de determinación propia para la liberación de la gente Chicana. Los Mechistas creen que el envolvimiento político y la educación son el camino hacia el cambio en nuestra sociedad. En las universidades, MEChA y los Mechistas están entre los grupos de la Raza y que no son de la Raza que están buscando el abrir puertas de educación superior para nuestras comunidades y luchan a favor de una sociedad libre del imperialismo, racismo, sexo y homofobia.

Algunos de los tópicos de discusión en este momento para los Mechistas de Miwaukee son: acceso a la educación superior, retención de estudiantes universitarios, alentar y apoyar nuevos programas enfocados en los estudios Latinos en las universidades y otros tópicos tales como, trabajo y envolvimiento en reforma inmigratoria en el CIW (Coalition of Immokalee Workers) campañas apoyando a los trabajadores de fincas y alimentos, las cuales demandan salarios justos y mejores condiciones de empleo para nuestra gente.

El nuevo capitulo estudiantil, MEChA de Milwaukee está al momento dirigido por estudiantes que también están involuicrados en SUFRIR (Students United For Immigration Rights). SUFRIR es la sección de estudiantes jóvenes que trabajan junto a Voces de la Frontera en asuntos de educación superior, tales como el Acta DREAM y la presente lucha a favor de una Reforma Inmigratoria Comprensiva.

Los Mechistas de Milwaukee creen que esta es una gran oportunidad para alcanzar a todos los estudiantes, sin importar si ellos no han estado envueltos en algo en el pasado. Nuestros asuntos tratan específicamente con problemas dentro de nuestras comunidades. Nosotros reconocemos que nosotros somos los que tendremos que enfrentar las consecuencias. Voces de la Frontera, en colaboración con el Senador Feingold, la Congresista Moore, Centro de Trabajadores en Madison, el AFL-CIO estatal y nacional, One Wisconsin, el Proyecto Nacional de Leyes de Empleo, y varios abogados laborales y abogados de inmigración, estan trabajando con la familia de Omar Damián Ortega para que el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional quita su Espera de ICE, lo que garantiza una comienza de sus procesos de deportación, como fue aplicado en una manera que debilita sus derechos como trabajador. Estamos contentos anunciar que después de mucho trabajo, la oficina regional de Inmigración de Chicago está revisando el caso de Omar y la posibilidad de quitar la Espera de ICE. Tenemos mucha esperanza que el trabajo de todos involucrados, especialmente Omar, esta recompensado como la familia ha sufrido tanto.

Animamos a todos de nuestros lectores que manden una carta a la aseguranza de West Bend Mutual Insurance Company describiendo su indignación de su indiferencia de los derechos laborales de Omar.

Mi nombre es Marissa y es difícil tener que expresar en pocas palabras el dolor que ha causado a mi familia esta situación. Mi esposo, Omar Damián, ha trabajado para la misma empresa por más de 9 años y el 24 de marzo tuvo una lesión en el trabajo. El manager lo llevo a una clínica y al entrar en la clínica el manager dijo que eso no era referente al trabajo. Omar no dijo nada ya que es limitado en el ingles pero entiende un poco. Por eso fue que el manager hablo por él. Omar solo se quejaba el dolor de espalda que tenia. Ellos fueron racistas con el ya le dijeron que no lo podían atender si antes no pagaba. El tuvo que pagar $50 dólares para recibir atención médica. Le dijeron que solo era un musculo y que todo

estaría bien pero mi esposo decidió ir con otro médico ya que el dolor era muy fuerte. El otro médico que vio mi esposo le dio terapias y le dio restricciones de no trabajar hasta que la infamación de la espalda disminuyera y le dijo que eso era worker’s comp que ellos lo iban a ayudar a llenar los papales necesarios.

Worker’s comp respondió y envió cheques pero solo hasta mayo 18, ellos después enviaron una carta diciendo que ya no le darían cobertura médica ya que según los records que le facilito la clínica donde lo llevo el manager de su trabajo decían que cuando Omar fue a la clínica el dijo que el dolor no era referente al trabajo. Pero quien dijo eso fue el manager, aparte el manager lo llevo a la clínica eso quiere decir que Omar estaba en el trabajo cuando tuvo la lesión. El doctor le dijo que el tenia derechos como trabajador y que él podía demandar la aseguradora así que mi esposo los demando y ellos al entrarse de la demanda quisiera averiguaron su estatus legal y al darse cuenta de que mi esposo es ilegal lo acusaron con la policía de robo de identidad diciendo que el número de seguro social con el que pidió trabajo pertenecía a otra persona. Esto lo hicieron porque no querían pagarle ya que sabían que por ley ellos tenían que pagar a mi esposo por su incapacidad.

Un sábado 22 de agosto a las 8:00 de la mañana la policía llego a mi casa y mi hija de 5 años abre la puerta y ellos se meten a la casa. Omar sale del baño y se sorprende de verlos adentro en la sala. Ellos lo interrogan y le dicen que un investigador quiere hablar con él. Cuando salgo de mi cuarto me espanto al ver a la policía. Me interrogan a mí también y me dicen que llame al investigador que quiere hablar con mi esposo.

Omar llama al abogado que está llevando el caso en contra de la aseguradora privada de worker’s comp

y le comenta lo sucedido y el abogado llama al investigador y hacen una cita para el 22 de septiembre. Ese día Omar llega a la cita y lo interrogan y después lo arrestan culpándolo de robo de identidad, acusación que no es cierta ya que Omar siempre ha usado su nombre para trabajar. Le pusieron una fianza de $2,500 y le dicen que no podrá salir libre ya que después que termine su caso será entregado a migración. El ha tenido ya tres cortes y su siguiente cesión es el 8 de diciembre.

Desde que Omar fue detenido nuestra vida no ha sido igual. Él era el que mantenía la casa y ahora todo es tan difícil. Tengo que trabajar en las tardes limpiando oficinas y cuido una niña en las mañanas para poder mantener mi casa, pero solo me alcanza para lo indispensables, no tengo lo suficiente como para contratar un abogado así que el abogado que lo está defendiendo es un abogado público. Me siento tan mal como una impotencia terrible al saber que no puedo hacer nada por sacarlo de allí. Yo lo extraño tanto y mis hijos también. No puedo creer que este tipo de cosas ocurra en este país que dice que hay libertad y derechos de igualdad para todos. Me siento tan mal cuando mis hijos lloran por su papa y preguntan que cuando regresara que ya lo quieren ver, que desean abrazarlo. Mi hijo el mayor de 12 años dice que se quiere ir a trabajar para ayudarme y tener más dinero para sacar a su papa de la cárcel. Me ha bajado las calificaciones cuando él ha sido un excelente estudiante. Dice que no quiere ver a su papa en la cárcel porque cuando nos fuimos y lo vio vestido con ese traje anaranjado se puso a llorar y en la noche no podía dormir y tenía pesadillas. Y mi otro hijo de 10 años a veces lo encuentro en vuelto en las cobijas llorando por su papa y la maestra me dice que está demasiado distraído y que luego llora en clase. Y la más pequeña de 5 años

me dice llorando: mama perdóname por abrir la puerta. Yo no quería que se llevaran a mi papa. Es mi culpa mama. Yo ya no voy a abrir la puerta a nadie nunca mas pero que regrese mi papa.

Ahora los tres no quieren ver a la policía y dicen que ellos son malos. Yo me siento tan mal al ver sufrir a mis hijos y al no poder hacer nada por aliviar su dolor. Cada noche me invade la tristeza, la impotencia, la soledad, saber que ya no está a mi lado y que volteo a mi costado en la cama y no está allí saber que está preso y que no puede dormir por el intenso dolor que le produce su espalda ya que no le quiere dar su medicamento. Todo esto es tan difícil yo solo le pido a Dios fortaleza para seguir, le pido a Dios que termine todo esto pronto.

Le quiero dar las gracias primeramente a Dios que ha puesto personas en mi camino para ayudarme a mí y a mi familia en esta situación. Doy las gracias a Voces de la Frontera por el apoyo que me han brindado. Ellos están teniendo un interés en el caso de mi esposo y mi familia ya que me siento escuchada. Y a mis pastores que han estado pendientes de nosotros, al pastor Eusebio Acevedo que va a visitar a mi esposo cada semana y le brinda apoyo moral y espiritual que, doy las gracias a toda la gente que me ha brindado su apoyo moral y económico. Yo gano solo para lo indispensable, y yo necesito juntar $7,500 de los cuales $5,000 son para el abogado de migración y los otros $2,500 para la fianza o multa que le pusieron a mi esposo. Reclamación de indemnización laboral lleva a la deportación

Voces de la Frontera, in collaboration with Senator Feingold, Congresswoman Moore, the Madison Worker Center, the National and State AFL-CIO, One Wisconsin, the National Employment Law Project, and several labor and immigration attorneys, have been working with the family of Omar Damian Ortega to see that the Department of Homeland Security remove their ICE Hold, which would guarantee the beginnings of deportation proceedings, as it was administered in a manner which undermines his rights as a worker. We are happy to announce that after much work, the Chicago ICE Field office is reviewing Omar’s case and the possibility of removing the ICE Hold. We are hopeful that the hard work of everyone involved, especially Omar, is rewarded appropriately as the family has suffered so much.

My name is Marissa and it is very difficult to have to express in a few words the pain that this situation has caused my family. My husband, Omar Damian, has worked for the same company for more than 9 years, and on March 24th, he was injured at work. The manager took him to a clinic and upon entering the clinic the manager told those there that it was not an injury related to work. My husband did not say anything since his English is limited, but he understands a bit. It was for that reason that the manager spoke on his behalf. Omar just complained about the back pain that he had. They were racist with him since they told him that they couldn’t attend to him if he didn’t pay. He had to

pay $50 in order to receive medical attention. They told him it was only a muscle and that everything would be fine. My husband decided to go to another doctor since the pain was so strong. The other doctor who saw my husband sent him to therapy and gave him work restrictions which said that he should not work until the inflammation in his back diminished. Also, he told him that it was a workman’s compensation issue and that they were going to help him fill out the necessary paperwork.

Workman’s comp responded and sent checks but only until May 18th, afterwards they sent a letter saying that they were no longer going to give him medical coverage since, according to records they received from the clinic where Omar’s manager took him, Omar had said at that appointment that the pain was not resultant of his work. But, the person who said this was the manager, additionally,

it was the manager who took him to the clinic obviously showing that Omar was at work when he was injured. The doctor told him that he had workers rights and that he could sue the insurance company. So, my husband sued them. Upon being sued by my husband, they investigated the legal status of my husband, and upon realizing that my husband is undocumented, they called the police accusing him of identity theft, saying that the social security number he used at work belonged to another person. They did this because they didn’t want to pay since they knew that by law they had to pay my husband for his disability.

One Saturday, August 22nd at 8:00 am, the police came to my

house. My five year old daughter opened the door and they came

into my house. Omar came out of the bathroom and he was shocked

El Padre Eleazar se ordenó el 8 de Agosto del año 1988 en Cuauhtémoc Madera, Chihuahua México, y por 11 anos sirvió a esta región Mexicana evangelizando donde hubiera necesidad, desde la cumbre de la sierra a los planos mas áridos de Chihuahua. Su camino eclesiástico lo llevaría aun más al norte hasta Milwaukee, Wisconsin donde el destino lo marcaría por el resto de su vida.

Desde su llegada en Octubre 28 del ano 1999, el padre reconoció las necesidades de un pueblo lejano de su nido natal. Su primera tarea en ésta ciudad fue en la parroquia de San Antonio donde se necesito la colaboración de cinco iglesias católicas de la arquidiócesis de Milwaukee para pagar su sueldo, debido a la crisis económica de la diócesis. El padre aunque contento con su asignación, estaba buscando un lugar para ejercer su visión propia.

Su transferencia a la iglesia de San Adalberto en Agosto del 2003 fue instrumental y fue el comienzo de transformar su misión espiritual. La iglesia de 200 feligreses aumento a más de 8,000 miembros durante su administración, compartiendo su tiempo con la iglesia San Rafael. Bajo la organización y permiso del Padre San Adalberto se convirtió en un centro de guianza y comunicación. Se llevaron a cabo diversas reuniones prestando atención a las diferentes necesidades de la comunidad. Cuando empezó el ataque al pueblo inmigrante mas rígido en unión con voces de la frontera se inicio una serie de juntas enlazando a representantes de la policía y al pueblo inmigrante, abriendo las líneas de comunicación y demandando un alto a la discriminación racial.

Su alianza a voces de la frontera fue fundamental ofreciendo y extendiendo ánimo al movimiento inmigrante. El Padre tomo un papel activo en las marchas y manifestaciones. Escuchando a las necesidades de la comunidad se convirtió en portavoz de un pueblo sediento de justicia. Desafortunadamente su doctrina sacerdotal en San Adalberto llego a su conclusión en Octubre de este ano, festejándolo y bendiciéndolo con una misa de despedida el 28 de Octubre día de San Judas Tadeo.

El destino de nuevo extendió sus brazos abriéndole otro camino para ejercer sus talentos iniciando su nuevo proyecto, Spirit Missión. Fue un sueño hecho realidad fundado y reconocido como organización sin fin de lucro el 17 de Agosto de 2009. Su misión es simple, facilitar valores humanos y otorgar consejos espirituales las 24 horas para que aquellos en necesidad tengan a

donde acudir. El padre lo llama un centro de servicio sin fronteras donde no hay distinción de cultura o religión, buscando una unidad en la diversidad del pueblo. El padre es el fundador y sirve como guía espiritual y está compuesto de 15 miembros de la mesa directiva. El centro esta ubicado en el exconvento de San Vicente de Paúl.

Para que quede bien claro, el Padre Eleazar sigue siendo sacerdote católico apoyado por su

Obispo de la diócesis de Cuauhtemoc Madera Chihuahua, Juan Guillermo López Soto, el cual mando una carta oficial declarando, “el Padre Eleazar no tiene impedimento para ejercer su ministerio Sacerdotal”. Sin embargo cualquier persona que necesite de sus servicios, como dar misa, tiene que ser autorizado por el párroco de la iglesia o del obispo. De acuerdo al Padre no haría algo que vaya en contra de la iglesia católica a la cual pertenece y con fé actuara conforme a la ley canónica. Es bueno señalar que aunque compartirá su tiempo entre Milwaukee y la ciudad fronteriza de El Paso, Texas, su residencia se encuentra aquí y esta comprometido con nuestra región para darle éxito a su nueva misión y seguirá sirviendo y apoyando a nuestra comunidad.

His path would eventually take him even further north to Milwaukee where destiny would mark him for the rest

of his life.From the onset of his arrival on

October 28, 1999, Father Eleazar recognized the necessities of a province far away from his native nest. His first assignment in this new city was in St. Anthony’s parish where it took the collaboration of five Catholic churches to pay for his salary due to the economic crisis of the time. Even though he was content, the quest for a higher calling to fulfill his heart and profess his own vision was quenching his soul.

The transfer to St. Adalbert’s church in August of 2003 was instrumental in renewing his spiritual mission. The parish increased it’s membership from 200 to more than 8,000 parishioners during his administration, while sharing his time with the church of St. Raphael. Under his leadership St. Adalbert’s

was transformed into an epicenter of guidance and community awareness. In this setting various diverse summit meetings took place and focused on the immediate needs of the community. While the assault on the immigrant community was more visible, in conjunction with Voces de la Frontera, a series of community forums were initiated connecting representatives from the police department with immigrant leaders, henceforth opening up the lines of communication and demanding an immediate halt to racial profiling and racial discrimination.

The father’s alliance with Voces de la Frontera wan fundamental in offering hope to the immigrant movement by embracing and taking an active role in the marches and manifestations. In listening to the outcry of a community in need of guidance the Father was converted into the voice of a people in thirst of justice. Unfortunately his time as a priest at St. Adalbert’s came to it’s conclusion in October of this year. On October 28th there was a going away mass in his honor blessing his departure on St. Jude’s day.

Destiny would however once again branch out it’s arms illuminating and leading him to a different path, hence initiating his new project, Spirit Mission. For this non-profit organization to become reality on August 17th was a dream come true. It’s mission is simple and concrete, to provide and restore human values and offer spiritual council 24 hours a day for those in need. Father Eleazar calls it a service center without borders in search of unity in a diverse society without distinction to culture or religion. The Father is the founding member and serves as the spiritual guidance counselor within its 15 member steering committee, and is located in the ex-convent of St.Vincent de Paul.

To make it clear, Father Eleazar is still a Catholic priest belonging to the Archdiocese of Cuauhtémoc Madera Chihuahua and supported by Bishop Juan Guillermo Lopez Soto, which sent an official letter declaring, “Father Eleazar is not hindered from exercising his ministry as a priest.” Whoever requires his services, like offering mass, must receive a written letter of authorization from the parish priest or bishop. According to Father Eleazar he would never do anything contrary to the doctrine of the Catholic Church in which he’s a part of, and in good faith will act according to the canon laws. In conclusion, it’s vital to point out that even though the Father will share his time with the border city of El Paso, Texas his residency will remain here in Milwaukee and is very much committed to our region in offering his services and supporting our community.

1-Acta de nacimiento del menor, en versión larga y apostillada.2-Identificación del menor: Cartilla de vacunación (con firma

del pediatra y/o sello del hospital del hospital) para menores de 6 años; identificación oficial vigente (Identificación del estado, pasaporte o credencial de la escuela) para mayores de seis años.

3-Ambos padres presentar: Acta de nacimiento en original o Identificación oficial vigente. Quien transmite la nacionalidad mexicana deberá presentar Mexicana (como pasaporte, matricula consular, credencial IFE o cartilla militar).

see them inside of the living room. The police interrogated him and told him that an investigator wanted to speak with him. When I came out of my bedroom, I was startled upon seeing the police. They interrogated me as well and told me to call the investigator as he wanted to speak with my husband.

Omar called our attorney which was handing our case against the private insurance company related to the workman’s comp issue and told him what had happened. The attorney called the investigator and made an appointment for September 22. That day, Omar arrived to the appointment, they interrogated him, and later arrested him charging him with identity theft; an accusation which is not true since Omar always used his lawful name to work. They gave him bail in the amount of $2,500 but also tell him that he won’t be able to leave freely since as soon as his case with identity theft is complete, he will be handed over to Immigration. He has already

had three different court hearings, his next being December 8th.

Since Omar has been detained, our lives have not been the same. It was he who maintained our home and now, everything is so hard. I have to work in the afternoons cleaning offices and take care of a little girl in the mornings in order to be able to maintain my family. And even then, it’s only enough for the bare necessities. I don’t have enough to hire an attorney; the attorney who is defending him is a public defender. I feel awful and helpless knowing that there isn’t anything that I can do to get him out of jail. My children and I miss him so much. I can’t believe that such things would happen in a country which claims freedom and equal rights for all. I feel awful when my children cry for their father and ask when he is coming home so they can see him and hug him again. My oldest son who is twelve years oldsays that he wants to go work to help me and have more money to get his dad out of prison. He was an excellent student but now his grades have dropped. He

says that he doesn’t want to see his dad in jail because when we went to see him and my son saw him in the orange jumpsuit he began to cry. In the night he can’t sleep and he has nightmares. My other son who is ten years old I found wrapped up in his bed sheets crying for his father and his teacher told me that he is very distracted in school and that he cries in class. My smallest little girl who is five years old tells me crying, “Mommy forgive me for opening the door. I didn’t want them to take my daddy. It’s my fault Mommy, now I’ll never open the door for anyone ever again. I just want my daddy home.”

Now the three of them don’t want to look at the police and they say that they’re bad people. I feel bad to see my kids suffer knowing that I cannot do anything to alleviate their pain. Every night I am overwhelmed with sadness, helplessness, and loneliness knowing that he is no longer at my side. I toss and turn at night knowing that he’s locked up in jail and can’t sleep because of the intense pain he has in his back since they don’t give him his medication.

This is all so hard, I only ask God for strength to continue on and that it all ends soon.

I’d like to first thank God for putting people in my path who have helped me and my family in this situation. I thank Voces de la Frontera for the support that they have given me and for having such an interest in my husband’s case. To my family who help me feel heard and to my pastors who have been so available to us, to the pastor Eusebio Acevedo who goes to visit my husband every week and gives him moral and spiritual support that for him is indispensable. I somehow need to gather $7,500, $5,000 for which is for my immigration attorney and the other $2,500 which is for the bond or find that they have given my husband.
