Human Development
(Graduated on 10 June 2015, average 3.5 out of 4, rating very good)

Thesis: “Women's Rights, Islam and Cultural Relativism: The Case of Contemporary Jordan.”
(Successfully Defended and approved without corrections: 5 March 2015). Supervisors: Dr. Shadaab
Rahemtulla.
The thesis tackles a pressing issue in the contemporary Muslim world: it examines how culturally relativist
arguments are deployed by religious authority figures in order to maintain women's discrimination. Focusing
on my own national context, I systematically analyze three contentious areas: gender equality; marriage; and
the right to the custody and guardianship of one's children. Supplementing this analysis, I explore how Islamic
texts can be interpreted in gender egalitarian ways. The thesis is well-researched, logically organized and
lucidly written, and makes an important contribution to the existing literature, especially by focusing on the
often ignored Jordanian context. The nature of my Master Degree has prepared me for this position. It involved
a great deal of independent research, requiring initiative, self-motivation and a wide range of skills.
