    Underwater Adventures

1 When Sylvia Earle was just a little girl, her favorite thing to do was spend time in the

woods near her New Jersey home. She loved being out in nature and observing the creatures

    that lived there.

2 Earle was 13 years old when her family moved to Florida, on the Gulf of Mxico. Gone

were the woods, and in their place were the coast, the ocean, and an all-new kind of wildlife to

discover. I can still feel that leap of enthusiasm, and real joy, at the prospect of finally gettingout to the beach, and running around, she recalls years later. But probably the most important

thing, to me, aside from just the freedom of it and the power of it, was the kind of creatures that

you could see along the beach that you cant find anywhere else.

3 Earles fascination with the ocean has turned her into one of the best-known marine

scientists in the world today. By 1969, she had already spent more than 1,000 hours doing

research underwater. In 1970, she and four other women dove 50 feet below the oceans surface

off the Virgin Islands. They swam down to a small enclosed structure that was built specifically

for the women to live in. The women stayed submerged below the ocean surface for two weeks. Her stay there helped make her a familiar face to the world. Many newspapers, magazines, and

television stations reported on her adventure. She became a public speaker, author, and strong

supporter of protecting the worlds oceans from pollution.

4 Her adventures were not over yet, though. In 1979, Earle walked on the seafloor at a lower

depth than any human being beforeor since. A small sub took her 1,250 feet down, off the

island of Oahu. She unfastened the rope that held her to the sub and dropped to the bottom of the

ocean. For two and a half hours, she explored all the wonders that she saw around her. It was an

amazing experience that she later wrote about in one of her books.

5 Today, Earle spends her time at the National Geographic Society. She continues to dedicate

her time and experience to her foremost passionthe mystery and beauty of the underwater

    world.

Directions: With these practice questions, you will show how well you can read and understand

written English. There are two reading selections and some questions about each one. For each

question, mark the letter of the correct answer on your answer sheet.

    Aunt Luisas Gift

1 Isabels mother was sad that Isabel did not want to go shopping with her. Worse, Isabel had

    stopped painting.

2 Isabel had learned to paint from her Aunt Luisa. Her aunt had taught art in New York City

before returning home to Puerto Rico shortly after Isabel was born. I want to meet my new niece,

she had said. Besides, theflamboyn trees will soon bloom. I have been painting the flowering

trees of New York. Their blooms are white and pink and very beautiful. However, I have been

thinking: When I was home, I never once painted aflamboyn tree. I think its time I went home and

    painted theflamboyn trees in bloom.

3 Soon, Aunt Luisa was home painting theflamboyn trees. She was still home the following

June, when once again theflamboyn trees came into bloom. At other times of the year, she paintedthe orchids in the rainforest, and when Isabel was old enough, she went with her aunt to paint. The

first time Isabel painted aflamboyn tree, she dipped the brush in crimson and orange paint and

covered the paper her aunt had given her. Paint dripped off the paper like liquid flames.

4 As the years went by, though, Isabel learned to paint with more skill. Her paintings hung

beside her aunts in her aunts little apartment. One day her aunt invited her to lunch and told her of

a wonderful opportunity that had come her way. Aunt Luisa was going to teach art in Madagascar!

Though Isabel was happy for her aunt and eagerly looked at the maps her aunt showed her, she was

sad as well. Theflamboyn trees would soon be in bloom, and her aunt would be on the other sideof the world. The time finally arrived, and Aunt Luisa moved to Madagascar where she spent some

    months working over there.

5 One day, back in Puerto Rico, just as Isabels mother was leaving to go shopping, the mail

arrived. There was a package for Isabel, and it came from Madagascar. Isabel could tell by the shape

of the package that her aunt had sent her a painting. When she opened it, she and her mother saw

that the painting was of aflamboyn tree. Aunt Luisa, without knowing it, had gone to live on

the island that gave birth to theflamboyn. Isabel forgot her loneliness. Her aunt was with the

flamboyn trees, and so was she. Her aunt would be home soon. Right now it was time for Isabel

to go shopping with her mother.
