Latin Elephant invited InsightShare and Fotosynthesis to facilitate a participatory consultation to the Latin American community in Elephant and Castle using Participatory Video and Photography. During 8 sessions a mixed group of young and adult men and women representing a range of Latin American countries used photography and video to share their perspectives on urban development in Elephant and Castle: its past, present and future. During the workshops they explored the space and interviewed the people who live, work or regularly spend time in the area. The photographs and video were curated by the participants and shared in a final exhibition.

Este dossier presenta el material recopilado durante los talleres Mi Latin Elephant: Talleres en Video y Fotografía participativa. Los talleres se realizaron de Septiembre a Noviembre 2015 y culminaron con la exhibición Ser Latinx en Elephant en el centro comercial de Elephant & Castle del 28 Noviembre al 5 diciembre 2015.

Los talleres fueron organizados por Latin Elephant y facilitados por InsightShare y Fotosynthesis. Un total de 12 participantes trabajaron durante ocho semanas para recuperar voces y experiencias sobre la contribución de los latinoamericanos en Elephant & Castle y lo que significa vivir bajo un proceso de revitalización urbana intensa.

Latin Elephant invitó a InsightShare y Fotosynthesis para que facilitara una consulta con la comunidad latinoamericana en Elephant & Castle usando métodos participativos. Durante las ocho sesiones un grupo mixto de jóvenes (hombres y mujeres) representando la diversidad de países latinoamericanos utilizaron técnicas de video y fotografía participativa para compartir sus perspectivas sobre desarrollo urbano en Elephant & Castle, incluyendo su pasado, presente y futuro. Durante los talleres exploraron el espacio y entrevistaron a personas que viven, trabajan o pasean por el área. This dossier presents some of the material collected as a result of My Latin Elephant: Participatory Video & Photography Workshops. The workshops ran from September to November 2015 culminating in a community exhibition titled Being Latin in Elephant. The exhibition took place in Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre from 28 November to 5 December 2015.

The workshops were organised by Latin Elephant and facilitated by InsightShare and Fotosynthesis. A total of 12 participants worked throughout eight weeks to recover multiple voices and experiences about the contribution of Latin Americans to the area and what it means to live under intense urban regeneration in Elephant and Castle.

BEING LATIN IN ELEPHANT

Elephant and Castle (EC) in the borough of Southwark is home to one of the largest Latin American business clusters in London, comprising of more than 100 small inter-independent Latin American run businesses. Latin Americans make up 8.9% of the population in Southwark (Census, 2011).

Latin American retailers started setting up businesses in the EC at the beginning of the 1990s and over the years have transformed the area into a vibrant Latin place in London. Elephant and Castle is meeting point (‘Un punto de encuentro’) for many Latin Americans in London.

The exhibition uncovers multiple voices and experiences about the contribution of Latin Americans to the area and what it means to live under intense urban regeneration in Elephant and Castle.

Being Latin in Elephant means many things to different people and the degree of identification, or not, with the place varies enormously. There is not one way

of representing it and it is not our intention to do so.

The transformations in Elephant’s urban fabric presents uncertainty, fears and hopes for those who live, work and visit the area. Urban regeneration brings challenges and possibilities to different migrant and ethnic groups in the area and in particular to Latin Americans. The work presented here intends to recover some of these concerns.

The exhibition is the product of ‘My Latin Elephant’ workshops in participatory video and photography organized by Latin Elephant. A total of 12 participants, all member of the Latin American community, worked for eight intensive weeks with our partner organizations InsightShare and Fotosynthesis to recover the many stories brought to you today. The group of participants was diverse, all representing different migrant experiences, but sharing their passion about the subject!

SER LATINX EN ELEPHANT

Elephant and Castle (EC) en la municipalidad de Southwark, alberga el conglomerado más grande de pequeños negocios latinoamericanos de Londres. La población latinoamericana en Southwark constituye un 8.9% de su totalidad.

Comerciantes Latinoamericanos comenzaron a establecer negocios en la EC a principios de la década de 1990 y durante los últimos 23 años han transformado la zona en un lugar Latino de Londres. Elephant and Castle es punto de encuentro para una diversidad de latinoamericanos en Londres.

La exhibición recoge múltiples voces y experiencias sobre la contribución Latinoamericana al área y lo que significa vivir bajo un proceso de revitalización tan intenso como el que se viene dando en Elephant and Castle.

No hay una manera de ‘Ser Latinx’ en Elephant, significa cosas diferentes para cada cual y los niveles de identificación o no con el lugar varían enormemente. Tampoco existe una forma de representarlo, y no pretendemos hacerlo.

La transformación en el tejido urbano de Elephant presenta incertidumbre, miedos y esperanzas para residentes, trabajadores y transeúntes. El impacto de tales cambios representa retos y posibilidades para diferentes grupos migrantes y étnicos en el área y en particular para los latinoamericanos. El trabajo presentado pretende recoger algunas de estas preocupaciones.

La exhibición es el producto de los talleres en video y fotografía participativa ‘My Latin Elephant’ organizados por Latin Elephant. Un total de 12 participantes, todos latinoamericanos, trabajaron de manera intensa por ocho semanas con InsightShare y Fotosynthesis, organizaciones asociadas al proyecto, para recuperar las historias que hoy le traemos. Es un grupo de participantes diversos, todos representando experiencias migratorias diferentes, pero compartiendo su pasión sobre el tema!

50 years of history in the elephant and castle shopping centre

In March 1965 the shopping centre opened its doors presuming

to be the first covered shopping mall in Europe. And although

some have considered it architecturally as a pretentious

disaster, people who regularly visit it, know that despite the

façade, the shopping centre is one of the most important and

symbolic elements in Elephant & Castle.

The front has gone from green to pink and to blue and

red but what remains is that it has always been a hub for

entrepreneurship and culture. As described in the analysis,

Underinvested Ingenuity, the shopping centre has gained

flexibility, adaptability and the aptitude of its users to

appropriate the space in creative ways, despite not being the

most well designed building.

The evolution of the shopping centre is evident. During the

1980s and 1990s the influx of migrants to London transformed

it into a multi-ethnic centre. In 1991 the area surrounding the

building was transformed into a market and in 1992 weekly tea

dances were organized to gather the community. For traders

and regular customers, the shopping centre is a place where

people from all places and backgrounds come together.

According to the research, Trading Places, more than 26

languages are spoken inside the shopping centre, primarily

English, Spanish, Arabic and Urdu.

Regardless of what the future holds, the shopping centre will

always be crucial in the history of Elephant and Castle.

En marzo de 1965 el centro comercial abrió sus puertas jactándose

de ser el primer centro comercial techado en Europa. Y aunque

algunos lo consideran un desastre arquitectónico, la gente que

regularmente lo visita sabe que a pesar de la fachada, el centro

comercial es uno de los elementos más simbólicos de Elephant &

Castle.

La fachada se ha pasado de ser verde a rosa y azul y rojo pero lo

que no ha cambiado es el hecho de ser siempre un centro cultural

y de emprendedores. El análisis, Underinvested Ingenuity, describe

cómo el centro comercial ha adquirido flexibilidad y adaptabilidad,

así como el ingenio de sus usuarios para generar más espacio

de forma creativa, a sabiendas de no ser el centro comercial con

mejores espacios.

La evolución del centro es evidente. Durante la década de los

ochenta y noventa, el alto número de inmigrantes lo transformó en

un centro multiétnico. En 1991 el área que rodea el centro comercial

se convirtió en un mercado y en 1992 sesiones semanales de té y

baile se llevaron a cabo en el centro comercial para generar una

mayor convivencia entre los vecinos. De acuerdo al estudio Trading

Places, más de 26 idiomas se hablan dentro del centro comercial,

principalmente el español, árabe y urdu.

Independientemente de lo que el futuro le depare, el centro

comercial siempre será clave en la historia de Elephant &

Castle.

Delancey, owners of the existing shopping cen-

tre since end of 2014, did a public consultation

on July and showcased designs of a proposed

new town centre for the area.

According to the exhibition, the new shopping

centre will have an open air space that will

include restaurants and convenience, high

street, and leisure shops. The town centre

will also include a new campus for the

London College of Communication. A second

consultation and exhibition took place in

November 2015 2015 and expects to begin with

the development in late 2017.

As for the development in Elephant Road,

Delancey plans to deliver the project by the

spring of 2016 and will incorporate homes,

student units, and a Sainsbury’s supermarket

as well as restaurants, leisure and outside

space.

Lend Lease, developers in charge of Elephant

Park, what used to be Heygate Estate have

ambitious plans of creating Central London’s

largest new park.

The developers intend to create nearly 3,000

new homes and 160,000 sq ft of retail space.

The South Gardens, Elephant Park’s first phase

will include three landscaped courtyards whilst

West Grove, second phase, comprises 593

homes set around two garden squares and a 31

storey building.

Delancey, dueños del centro comercial desde

finales de 2014 llevaron a cabo en Julio una consulta

pública y presentaron diseños de la propuesta del

nuevo centro de recreación y comercial para el

área.

De acuerdo a la exhibición, el nuevo centro

comercial contará con un área al aire libre que

incluye restaurantes y tiendas de conveniencia,

marcas de lujo y de entretenimiento. El nuevo

centro también cuenta con un nuevo campus para

el London College of Communication. Una segunda

consulta y exhibición se llevó a cabo en Noviembre

de 2015 y se espera comenzar con la segunda fase

a finales de 2017.

En cuanto a los planes en Elephant Road, Delancey

se ha propuesto terminar el proyecto a finales

de 2016 el cuál integra vivienda, complejos para

estudiantes y un supermercado Sainsbury’s, así

como restaurantes, entretenimiento y espacio al

aire libre.

Nowadays, Elephant and Castle (EC) is home to one of the largest Latin American business clusters in London, comprising of more than 100 small inter-independent Latin American run businesses. There are four clearly identified zones in the core commercial area of EC: the EC shopping centre, the Arches in Elephant Road, the Arches in Eagle Yard and Tiendas del Sur in Newington Butts.

Latin Americans have transformed the previously derelict spaces on the railway arches and inhabited empty shops in the area, creating in the process a distinctive Latin business cluster in EC. These shops are part of an entire social network and support system for many Latin Americans living in London. Economically these shops are important because they provide employment and income for many families in London and contribute to diversify the retail offer in EC.

Latin American retailers are now at the centre of a multi-million pound regeneration plan that will see the area transformed into what has been described by developers and the council as a ‘vibrant quarter of Central London’.

The redevelopment plans for EC has been received with scepticism by Latin American local retailers who, despite welcoming some of the changes, fear for their sustainability and future presence in the area. Text by Patria Román-Velázquez

The EC shopping centre was one of the first in Britain when it opened in 1965. However, given its location amongst the ‘… hurtling traffic on a life-threatening system of roundabouts in Southwark’ (Hall, 1992: 18), and in one of the areas of highest unemployment, the Centre was also strongly affected by the economic recession at the end of the 1980s.

By 1991, for example, the first floor of the shopping centre was nearly vacated with shops either closing down or ceasing operations. A year later Latin Americans started opening shops on the first level of the shopping centre. La Fogata opened in June 1992, followed by Inara Travels (now Inara Transfers) and by 1994 there were ten shops owned by Latin Americans including food shops, fritter stalls, a travel agency, a jeweller, an employment agency, a hairdresser and a tailor’s shop, with snack places filtering to the outside of the shopping centre.

Estos comercios son parte de un sistema de apoyo social y comercial para muchos latinoamericanos. El centro comercial de EC fue uno de los primeros en Gran Bretaña cuando se inauguró en 1965. Sin embargo, dada su ubicación entre el “... bullicioso tráfico en un sistema mortal de rotondas en Southwark’ (Hall, 1992:18), y en una de las zonas de mayor tasa de desempleo, el centro fue también fuertemente afectado por la recesión económica de finales de la década de 1980.

En 1991, por ejemplo, muchos establecimientos del centro comercial estaban desocupados o a punto de cesar operaciones. Un año más tarde latinoamericanos comenzaron a abrir tiendas en el primer nivel del centro comercial. La Fogata abrió sus puertas en junio de 1992, seguido por Inara Travels (ahora Inara Transfers); en 1994 había diez tiendas propiedad de latinoamericanos, incluyendo tiendas de comida, frituras, una agencia de viajes, un joyero, una agencia de empleo, una peluquería y una sastrería, con varios establecimientos comenzando a establecerse en las afueras del centro comercial.

Colombia. It is to guess the outcome of a lottery

or draw. The success may be one, two, three

and four numbers.

Many Latin Americans play the luck game to

Elephant & Castle, every day with the hope of

earning “extra money “. In Elephant and Castle,

you can find Nora, a Colombian whose smile and

charisma give us the chance to play the game

as if we were in the park of our town.

Meeting Nora in Elephant & Castle is to revive

our identity and culture.

“Which numbers won yesterday? “ It is the most

heard phrase every morning in the hallways of

Elephant and around....she has many questions

related to the renovation of the area

Colombia. Consiste en acertar el resultado de

The shop assistant comments that almost everyone comes in

looking for their own flag. And if someone doesn’t find theirs,

they feel sad.

Therefore, this furniture shop tries hard to find the flags of every

country so that everyone is represented and feels happy!

Comenta el dependiente que casi todos entramos buscando

nuestra propia bandera. Y que si alguien no encuentra la suya,

entonces se entristece.

Por eso este negocio de muebles hace esfuerzos por encontrar

las banderas de todos los países, así todos estamos represen-

tados y felices!

Elephant & Castle is an area in South London, which hosts a well-

known shopping centre. It is also famous thanks to its historic

residents Charles Chaplin and Michael Caine.

Throughout the years, this zone became the meeting point of

many communities, specially the Latin American. Nowadays

Elephant & Castle is facing regeneration, where many local

retailers are at risk. Most of the owners are members of our

community.

The area is going through important changes of urban

regeneration and recovery of public space, which paradoxically,

is an improvement for London but our community will pay a high

price: what has been the livelihood for many families, is now

affected by the renovation. .

We are surrounded by architectural changes and new luxurious

buildings that obscure the feeling and living of many people who

struggle every day to build a better life with their families.

Elephant & Castle es un sector al sur de Londres, y un reconocido

centro comercial. Muy famoso por los residentes históricos

Charles Chaplin y Michael Caine, vecinos de la zona.

Con el paso del tiempo esta zona se convirtió en el punto de

encuentro de varias comunidades, en especial de la comunidad

latinoamericana.

En la actualidad el sector de Elephant & Castle se enfrenta a una

remodelación, donde se pone en riesgo una gran cantidad de

locales y negocios comerciales. La mayoría de los propietarios

pertenecen a nuestra comunidad latina.

En la actualidad el área presenta cambios importantes para la

renovación urbana y recuperación del espacio público. Lo que,

paradójicamente, es un avance para la ciudad; a nuestra querida

comunidad latina le cuesta un alto precio. Ya que el esfuerzo

de muchos años, el cual ha sido el sustento diario para muchas

familias, ahora se ve afectado por dicha reestructuración.

Nos vemos rodeados de cambios arquitectónicos con lujosas

edificaciones que opacan el sentir y el vivir de muchas personas

que luchan día a día para salir adelante con sus familias.

“I work in those buildings,” a proud Mr. Raghbir Singh told is, showing us his helmet with his name on.

He is not aware of the local controversy surrounding reloca-tions and speculation in the area and he doesn’t want to know. He works on the construction of the new buildings in the area.

He has no concept of the local circumstances. He doesn’t live in London, he just came to work and he will leave when he’s finished.

“This building will have 18 floors and the one next to it will have 24,” Mr Singh told us. “These new buildings are adjacent to where the Heygate Estate once was.”

Desconoce la polémica local en cuanto a los desplazamientos y especulación del área y no le interesa saber.

Trabaja construyendo los nuevos edificios del área. No tiene noción de las circunstancias locales. No vive en Londres, vino a Londres solamente a trabajar se irá cuando termine.

Notice the university, the church, the restaurants, the

charity organisation, the bingo club, the day nursery,

the fake art store, and the local market. Notice the ways

in which graffiti exceeds the frame of an ordered and

designated space for writing. Notice the sex ad in the men’s

toilet wall. Notice the corset model and her voluptuous

features on display dis/ordering the female body. Notice

the “Out of Order’ sign followed by an apology. Notice the

jack-of-all-trades, immigration services related. Notice

the outline of a blue face on the white wall. Notice the

torn apart protest and demonstration announcements.

Notice the ads for room rentals and home removals

ads. Notice the Strata letting agency office. Notice the

security guards. Notice the privatisation. Notice how all

these elements collide.

The multiple palimpsests found at Elephant and Castle

signal movement and ex/change, mixed economies of

pleasure and business, and the business of pleasure

all in the context of intensive urban erasures. They are

to be written upon once more, perhaps with a new and

more expensive frame. Their new writers will be under

continuous monitoring and surveillance. It is unlikely that

those writing with pens, pencils, markers, and graffiti

paint will no longer qualify as writers of palimpsests.

Elephant and its

palimpsests

A palimpsest is a parchment that has been erased and written

upon repeatedly over time. Peering through its surface are

spectres of time-space, ghosts of marked pasts and of

erased futures. A palimpsest has the memory of an elephant.

An elephant has many palimpsests.

The metaphor of a palimpsest is applied broadly to this

collection of photographs. Together these representational

spaces highlight different spatial practices of everyday life at

Elephant & Castle. They constitute cartography in the making,

awaiting its imminent erasure.

The notice boards, both formal and informal, are remnants of

materiality that inscribe and are inscribed by its users.

Fíjese en la universidad, la iglesia, los restaurantes, la

organización sin ánimo de lucro, el club de bingo, la guardería,

la tienda de arte de imitación, y el mercado local. Fíjese la forma

en que los grafitos exceden el marco de un orden y un espacio

designado para escribir. Fíjese en la publicidad de sexo en el

baño de hombres. Fíjese en el corsé de la modelo y sus curvas

voluptuosas des/ordenando la figura femenina.

Fíjese en el aviso de “Fuera de Servicio” seguido de una disculpa.

Fíjese en el local lo-sabemos-todo, relacionado con servicios

al inmigrante. Fíjese en contorno de una cara azul en la pared

blanca. Fíjese en los anuncios cuasi destruidos de protestas

y demostraciones. Fíjese en los anuncios de habitaciones

en arriendo y servicio de mudanzas. Fíjese en la agencia de

arrendamientos del Sorata. Fíjese en los guardias de seguridad.

Fíjese en la privatización. Fíjese en la forma en que estos

elementos chocan.

Los múltiples palimpsestos en Elephant & Castle señalan

movimiento e intercambio, economías mezcladas de placer

y negocio, y los negocios de placer todos en el contexto de

eliminaciones urbanas. Estas serán rescritas una vez más, quizá

en un marco nuevo y más caro. Sus nuevos escritores estarán

bajo continuo monitoreo y vigilancia. Es muy probable que los

que escriben con bolígrafos, lápices, marcadores, y aerosol de

graffiti ya no calificarán como escritores de palimpsestos.

Un palimpsesto es un pergamino que ha sido borrado y

reescrito repetidas veces a través del tiempo. Traspintados

por la superficie hay espectros de tiempos espaciales,

fantasmas que marcan el pasado y borran el futuro. Un

palimpsesto tiene la memoria de un elefante. Un elefante

tiene muchos palimpsestos.

La metáfora de un palimpsesto se aplica ampliamente

a esta colección de fotografías. Juntas estos espacios

de representación juntos realzan diferentes prácticas

espaciales del día a día en Elephant & Castle. Ellas

constituyen una cartografía en proceso, esperando su

eliminación inminente. Los tableros de noticias, de forma

formal e informal, son remanentes de la materialidad que

escribe en los cuerpos de los usuarios; y estos a su vez, son

los mismos que escriben la materialidad.

A través de esta serie de fotografías quise hacer

un paralelo entre los negocios de Elephant Road

y Harper Road. Me pareció importante resaltar

que aunque la estética de los almacenes no es

la más lujosa, abastecen las necesidades de las

minorías étnicas en el entorno.

Through this series of photographs I wanted

to draw a parallel between the businesses

on Elephant Road and Harper Road. It seemed

important to me to note that although the shops

don’t look very luxurious, they meet the needs of

the local ethnic minorities.

Participants were also involved in producing a short documentary about the meaning of Elephant and Castle for those who live, work and visit the area. The video together with the photographic material add to the participatory methods used by Latin Elephant to extend its consultation with a wider segement of the population.

Epílogo

El proceso participativo del cual el grupo participo para curar la exhibición consistió de una selección colectiva de las grabaciones para producir su documental y la de crear ensayos fotográficos. Ese proceso ayudo a que los participantes profundizaran en los temas que surgían y que luego fueron incorporados en la exhibición final. Durante el evento los participantes guiaron a los asistentes y lideraron una sesión de preguntas y respuestas después de cada una de las presentaciones del video. Estas conversaciones ayudaron para que los asistentes reflexionaran sobre la complejidad del proceso de desarrollo urbano, los riesgos de la gentrificación así también como la importancia de la acción colectiva para influir en la política pública que afecta a grupos étnicos que contribuyen a la economía local.

The interesting participatory process in which the group engaged to curate the exhibition involved collectively selecting footage to craft their documentary as well as creating photo essays alongside explanatory text. That process supported the group to go deeper into the issues that emerged from the exploration of the themes which reflected into the final exhibition. During the event, the participants guided the public through the space and led Questions and Answers sessions post projection of the documentary. In each conversation, the public was able to reflect on the complexities of urban development, the risks of gentrification as well as the importance of collective action to influence public policy that affects ethnic minorities who highly contribute to the local economy.
