The AMTC was created in March 2009 under the
Scientific and Technological Centers of
Excellence program from CONICYT.

1 Exploration & Ore Deposit Modeling: studies of ore deposits, including metalogenic and ore
genetic processes, the time-space relationships with the evolution of the Andean margin, down to ore deposit
models for applications in exploration to geo-mineral metallurgical models.
2. Design and Mine Planning: this group is a national reference in its areas of competence,
particularly underground mining planning and design in terms of the development of software tools.
3. Mineral Processing & Extractive Metallurgy: Produce Knowledge and develop new
technologies that contribute to the improvement in using available resources in current mine projects, as well as
in new mineral resources identified allowing to achieve challenges in the long term of the mining industry
4. Mining Automation: Transferring R&D results in Robotics, Automation, Semiconductor and Sensor
Technologies, Pattern Recognition, and Sensor and Data Networks to the mining industry. Currently the group
has three main areas: Robotics, Image Processing and Pattern Recognition, and Energy Efficiency and
Management.
5. Water & Environmental Sustainability: Produce knowledge and technologies that allow
detect and reduce negative impacts of mining activities from exploration to closing stages, with mainly focus in
aspect such as water and air quality, ecosystem and communities located close to the mining industry.

Continuous Converting of Copper Matte in Packed Bed Reactor
• Technological innovation in pirometallurgy of copper.
• Improvement to batch copper conversion: higher efficiency, and better capture of gases.
• Developed under FONDEF project, prior to AMTC formation.
• AMTC is now Licencing this technology
• Current status: pilot plant testing funded by ENAMI.

Ore Deposit Modeling and Mine Planning Software
Many research tools, models, algorithms and results are transferred to industry through software
• MGeoS multivariate geostatistical sofware – Innova project along with Codelco – pre competitive
• U-Fo software for geometrical restitution (unfolding) and geostatistical resource evaluation – industry funded by Yamana Gold – commercial use (12 licenses for use in Chile, Argentina and Brazil)
• U-Mine friendly univariate geostatistics package – Fondef project along with Codelco and Gemcom Software International – pre competitive and academic use (over 100 academic licenses)
• Syscave block caving data analysis, visualization and flow simulation software – developed with BCLab – pre competitive
• Dromedar image analysis for rock characterization – research use
• BOS2 Open Pit Planner with capacity, accessibility and processing constraints – precompetitive (about 30 academic licenses).
• UDESS Underground Development and Extraction scheduler – precompetitive (about 20 academic licenses).
