Vacuum Distillation
• This presentation Focus • What is distillation• The purpose of distillation • The purpose of vacuum distillation
What is distillation:
• Distillation is the process of evaporating a liquid, then cooling the vapors to condense and collect them
• The purpose is to purify the liquid leaving behind all the other contaminants
• The distillation as a purifying method is based on the difference of the boiling points of the oil or liquid to be distilled from that of the contaminants.
Vacuum Distillation:
• Distillation under reduced pressure to below atmospheric pressure is called vacuum distillation.
• The boiling point of the liquid will decrease as the pressure decreases. The lower the pressure or (the higher the vacuum) the lower the boiling point.
• Lowering the boiling point reduces the heat of vaporization or the amount of energy needed to purify the desired liquid
