ENTREVISTA INTERVIEW
National brands provide nearly 80 percent of the supply of this department store, located inside the three largest and most important Mexican markets. Blanca stresses the importance of certification and, in general, the professionalization of Mexican firms to cope with competition from Asia, which will soon be free of retaliatory duties.
At Plaza Antara in Polanco before the start of the Sears Color Runway Parade, we interviewed Blanca Chávez. She is a woman who knows where she stands, who know her suppliers, both national and global. Blanca started in this profession in the JC Penney Company, where she served ten years in different procurement areas, then spent time in Spain and returned to Mexico once her professional alma mater became property of Sears.

What percentage of the offer you have in your windows
is imported?
Approximately 18 percent is imported, with brands like
Paris Hilton and 24 hours, both exclusive, covering the seg-
ment of fashion and comfort. The suppliers we use are of
great importance for our store windows because we offer
quality, price and service. Brands such as Flexi, Westies,
Soft Feet, Laura Est, Levi’s, Via Cattini, etc., have had an
interesting growth over 2009.
How long have you demanded exclusivity?
Approximately four years that the concept of the shoe store
has changed, before it was conservative, less fashion. Now
we want to ensure that young people visit the stores, so
we need to change and innovate in some modeling, and we
worked very well: we have young people aged 20 years buying
shoes at SEARS. The change has paid dividends, consumers
now have not previously thought to find a fashionable shoe
and now have a variety to choose from, and either by youth
brand or by type of shoes we have on the floor.

set.
WhatdoesadomesticsupplierhastofulfilltoselltoSears?
What we look for in a supplier is quality, price and service, also, to offer our customers complete
satisfaction, fulfilling our mission. that's why the national brands we have are the best and
we have always been open to study new proposals.
ifyoulikeamodelinafair,doyourequireitinexclusive?
it depends on the brand. if you have a sampler range so wide as to say “these models you
have selected are yours,” of course that benefits us both to the brand and to Sears, because
our client does not see the same shoe in other stores.
isitimportantforyouthatasupplierbecertified?
it is definitely important. it is a condition, but it gives value added to the shoe sales floor,
because having certifications will give you the confidence to invest a certain part of the budget
in that supplier, you are sure it will deliver us up to 99 percent of fulfillment. providers who
do not have this quality of service, definitely will have severely complicated negotiations
with SearS.
Whenyoumakeachoice,doyouhaveinmindtheoutfitthatagreeswiththatshoe?
Yes, it is important, you must buy for any outfit, you have to buy for every woman, and you
cannot think only about a certain profile. We think of our wide range of consumers.
Whatkindofoutfitareyouthinkingaboutnowthatyou'regoing
tothefairsSapicaandModama?
We expect that our suppliers have the trends and colors for next autumn-winter 2010.
We are always ready to look at new proposals.
Whatdoyouthinkofthedomesticsupply?
providers are much more concerned with offering us fashion and, above all, service and quality.
this is making them stronger in order to be prepared for the upcoming opening of the asian
market.
WhatdoyouthinkweshouldimproveinMexicotohavebetterquality?
to keep on working intensively on quality, service and design. this must go hand in hand with
training, and upgrading of all the equipment of each company.
Whatarethecharacteristicsoffashionalreadyinthestorewindowsforthisseason?
the collections we have in the selling floor are quite rich in all ranges of trends. right now, the
stronger is the platform, very high heel, stylized, the pumps, which are very comfortable shoes
and quite aesthetic. in this runway parade [meaning color parade spring-summer] you will
see the Brazilian brand route one that we have as exclusive of our department stores. this
brand is already positioned in Mexico, has over 40 boutiques in the main squares of the city
and within the republic. For the runway platform sandals are used for all the changes.

From January 19 through 22, the fair Intermoda was carried out attaining, with the changes
announced in its last edition, a more professional atmosphere to do business. According to
official numbers, the nearly twenty thousand buyers that attended the event placed orders
by 1,500 million pesos for the next three months in the apparel industry. Some of the national
exhibitors interviewed confirmed to have achieved a growth of orders of 20 percent in this
edition of Intermoda.
The growth of the fair by making use of an additional area to accommodate international
exhibitors was remarkable. The already consolidated Colombian delegation reported, even by
new exhibitors, such as Agua Bendita of the opening runway, better results than the expected
ones. And it is that the way to commercialize here in Mexico is quite similar to the way it is
done in Colombia. For other participants of this pavilion, nevertheless, as in the case of the
Indian delegation, the experience was not so fruitful, because they lacked information about
the Mexican market.
In effect, Asish Jain, CEO of the company Swami Textile, commented that to be able to
work in Mexico it is necessary to have a local representative, since several barriers exist. One
of them is language, since most of the buyers do not speak English and being small boutiques
they are only interested in smaller volumes of purchase in comparison with buyers of Magic
or Frankfurt, in which his company also participates. This is one of the reasons why domestic
buyers are not interested in importing from India.
The great retail buyers hold contrasting opinions about Intermoda: Ezra Kogan, of the
company Arena Continental, looked for manufacturers to satisfy volumes between five
thousand and ten thousand sportswear garments per week and realized that most of the
exhibitors are importers. On the other hand, according to the international buyer of Coppel,
Nadia Rubí, the level of the fair was surprisingly pleasing, since she found some suppliers
whom she regularly meets in fairs of Las Vegas or Hong Kong.
Well designed booths
Some domestic companies, displayed creative elements in their booths as value added to
differentiate themselves, among which we identified: Sthela, with great colors and a logo
designed with flowers; Camila Jones, with a semi opened space, and Hispania group, that
presented an aspect of boutique with the clothes exhibited in the periphery and a runway

of three levels, where they presented their own fashion runway parades displaying integral
fashion. We also want to highlight the fact that in this area devoted to national supply, the
voice of the businesses could be heard over the maddening noise of other editions. Good for
intermoda, a change that makes it still more professional!
at the opening of the fair the chairmen of the national apparel industry chambers were
present, in addition to officers of the different levels of government that emphasized the
necessity to focus the efforts on innovation and re-invention. as of this year, the fair has at-
tained the certification iSo 9001-2008 and the creation of a center of Fashion intelligence
to take care of the specific necessities of companies was also announced, which includes,
among other things, the creation of technical careers.
the lecture and runway parade program contributes the useful elements to show the
buyers the main commercial trends of the spring-summer season. With a total of 16 runway
parades, the season collections of the main exhibiting brands were successfully displayed,
during the four days that lasted the fair. these exhibitions had a correct balance of all the
exhibitors and proposals that went from the most commercial to the most avant-garde.
the international runway of this event stands out for being of the best ones of the coun-
try. it fulfills qualities that project it as an indispensable reference of fashion and design;
for example, it always draws international designers: this time it had the participation of
Blessed Water of colombia, and Meche correa of peru, alternating with domestic designers:
in this occasion, the Mancandy brand and the designer Daniel andrade, whom KS magazine
presented as a new talent in its 47th issue.
the commercial capacity contributed by this runway parade is granted by the same
event; designers show their creations before attending buyers and before a more and more
numerous group of mass media and special guests. that is, it is at the same time a runway
show and a commercial hit.

externo, a finales del año anterior, fue el contexto desde el cual se celebró la edición 2010 de ANPIC;
the excellent performance of shoe sales in the domestic
market, and relatively abroad, at the end of last year, was the
context from which 2010 edition of anpic was carried out;
indeed, the association of Department Stores and Super-

Guanajuato, Juan Manuel oliva, said during the inauguration
of the event that the industry fully recovered the jobs lost to
the crisis in the last quarter of last year and during the first
months of this one.
regarding the environmental issue, the note was given by
the green pavilion, a novelty at the fair. Here, we present the
most remarkable features that were presented in this space,
with respect to leather, supplies and shoes.

recycling them. they are manufactured for export to europe,
where attention to the environment is much higher, coupled
with the fact that its parent company is in italy. the costs,

y luego poder procesarlos”.

made out of 20% solid content and 80% solvent, i.e., for every 100 kilos of traditional
adhesives that are manufactured, 80 are released to the air, but Henkel has the mission and
vision of being a sustainable company friendly to the environment and the health of workers.
With their technology of water-based adhesives, they have eliminated all solvents, both toxic
and non toxic, and therefore the emissions to the atmosphere. Furthermore, the idea of this
company, in addition to the above, is to provide technologies that have performed equally
well or better than solvent-based ones.
"the domestic market does not require water-based adhesive, because in Mexico there
are not standards as in europe or asia, where the big brands such as nike, adidas and reebok
have been asked not to use toxic solvents anymore," said Francisco pérez, of Henkel. "We have
products that are free of toluene, which already meet the standards that large companies are
demanding, we have Simon-resistol toluene-free ancillary products” he concludes.
especialsolidsseparationfortanneries
With special technology of French origin, this machinery is used to separate solids, hair
and compact them to obtain a final disposition, according to andrés Flores explains, eMo.
“Unfortunately,” he says, “the tanneries have no treatment to download their waste. What
we offer is a proposal consisting of accessible equipment, so that the tanneries can separate
solids, which are highly polluting and are not controlled now, and then process them.”
Solarradiationtoheatwaterandair
With Mexican patented technology, this thermo solar equipment is using thermal radia-
tion from the sun to heat water and thus eliminate the emission of greenhouse gases due to
burning fuel. this product can be used by any company in need of heating water or air. “the
initial investment is considerable, but its operation is very cheap because it uses solar energy,"
reveals Jaime Videgaray of captasol.

En una breve síntesis, recogemos las intervenciones más sobresalientes de panelistas y público asistente, referentes a siete temas.thanks to intermoda that continues sponsoring this activity and its coordinator, arturo rodríguez, the second panel on apparel and textiles was carried out in the city of guadalajara. in a brief summary, we extracted the most outstanding interventions of panelists and audience, regarding seven items.
Guadalajara, participante).
culture and education
Jorge de León (Manager of Gerber Technology, a panelist). Education must
start from the principle of universality; design schools should not teach the same
thing, they should have a common core and then allow them to develop their
regional domestic markets. Education is crucial in order to cover ground, as an
example, he exposes the Colombian case, where fashion per capita income is
four times that of Mexico.
Salvador Contreras (Assistant Manager Maqui Agujas, participant).
Regarding education, we must think in a more integral way to really make grow
the apparel industry in Mexico. We must think of other areas of expertise that
are needed, such as mechanics, production management, and quality control.
We have to develop technology centers too, not only design centers - and have
more people trained in all areas of the industry.
Raúl Galindo (Productive Projects Director of FUNTEC, participant).
Culture is the basis of design: it provides the path to innovation and quality.
Art and culture are modern weapons to conquer markets. We must exploit the
culture of the country’s south. - Applied culture to achieve a more dignified and
progressive society.
Noelia Agulló (Director of the Design Faculty of the University of Guada-
lajara, participant). This institution will open a bachelors’ degree in fashion
design very soon, whose aim is that graduate students achieve a cultural rescue
to design and brand concept with a clear niche market. For this purpose, it
will offer a core curriculum with subjects such as design, economics, business
management and marketing.
María Rosario Mendoza (designer and advisor of CNIV, panelist). The main
topic when speaking about homologation is that there is a curriculum with the
core subjects. This comment stems from an external analysis, in which a strong
criticism towards Mexico was passed: that is, students are extremely creative,
but their general culture is very poor.
Pablo Guerrero (Director of the Glam Show, participant). There is a boom of
fake design schools. Chambers are required to make a certification of the schools
to have a certain control and that their real interest is creating and promoting
industry designers and not just for the money. After that certification has been
given the students proceed to specialize themselves.
Sergio López (President of the CANAIVE, Jalisco delegation, pane-
list). EU unified in a common core design studies. What is certain to happen
in Mexico is that the Secretary of Education will certify the schools that have
a core curriculum for these studies because it is not legally able to require it to
all institutions.

PROPRIETARY BRAND AND INDUSTRIAL INTEGRATION
Simon Feldman (Chairman of the CANAIVE, panelist). The domestic
apparel industry has grown through the efforts of Mexican manufacturers, but
not thanks to the support of government: As long as the government has no
interest in this industry it will be difficult to make it grow.
In Brazil, what are most consumed are products with proprietary brand,
something that is missing in Mexico. To create a brand requires a vertical inte-
gration fiber-textile-clothing; in the domestic market the necessary textiles that
we can combine to reach the brand itself do not exist.
Gustavo Millet (President of the CANAIVE, Yucatán delegation, panelist).
Fashion should be regionalized, and this requires a joint effort. It needs to be
modernized and to set up parameters about how to do it, establish a collective
brand, with quality control. In Yucatan, a certification is being developed for
the guayabera.*
* A light open-necked cotton shirt, often with large pockets and pleats down the front
that is typically worn outside the pants.
MARKETING FOR STORES
Gustavo Miller. Mexico is already into fashion design; but we have not learned
how to sell it. In schools visual merchandising is not taught. It is difficult to
find professionals who can put a decent window; department stores hire the
service abroad.
Pablo Guerrero. The few professionals trained in visual merchandising earn a low
wage (8,500 pesos; around 680 US dollars). In Mexico, there is no institution with
the academic curriculum; to study virtual merchandising, you must go abroad.
INTERMODA AND MINERVA FASHION
Jaime Barba (Intermoda president, panelist). An essential task to make
consumption grow is bringing buyers of Central and South America, USA, Puerto
Rico. Mexico is in a favorable stage to promote exports and many manufacturers
support this view. It is also important to improve the culture of design. A pla-
tform for this is Intermoda, as seen in the New Talent Pavilion. There are reports
informing that in Jalisco some companies have hired professional services of
up to 16 designers.
Pablo Guerrero (Director de The Glam
Show , participante).

pablo Guerrero.
salarios (8 500 pesos). En México, no hay ninguna institución que tenga esta currícula académica;

a atacar.
MariarosarioMendoza.Design is important to move forward
(the end consumer requests fashion and design). [It is neces-
sary] that fashion events are organized for designers, [they
should be] places where they can introduce their products
and promote sales.
Joseplascencia(ChairmanofCTo,panelist). The state
government and the four chambers are, at this moment, trying
to unite in order to promote stronger and more unified events.
There is significant potential for improvement in Mexico; it
also needs more support to raise competitiveness. In the pre-
sentations, demand is always forgotten, [we have] to choose
the niche we are going to attack. It is not enough, just to think
about exporting, we have to visualize that it will be achieved,
we need to be more aggressive and apply greater resources than
we currently have, seek an engaged entrepreneurial class that
understands the value chain.
Sergiolópez. He will propose to the Fashion Council of Jalisco
that Minerva Fashion incorporates itself in Intermoda and other
commercial events, because so far it has no connection with the
market; raise the level of the collections of students presented
in this event, and set up a national runway commemorative of
the Bicentennial in Guadalajara.
THeinduSTryinTHeSTaTeoFJaliSCo
Sergiolópez(presidentoftheCanaive,Jaliscodelega-
tion, panelist). The government is not interested in developing
a plan for the textile-apparel industry, but it may be interested
in what manufacturers propose and do about the subject –It
has to be seduced with facts and specific proposals-. In Jalisco, a
design center capable of reporting on fashion trends, 24 months
before the start of the season.
[Additionally, a study reports that 40 percent of companies
in the industry shows that 60 percent do not believe in the future
of the industry and that the educational level of entrepreneurs
is limited and is located on the basics. So they will focus on
entrepreneurial training to enable the use of the expertise
gained and developing interest in design].
guillermoespinoza(JaliscoStategovernment,pane-
list).Of the nine points of the first manifesto, eight have been
achieved. In Jalisco programs such as Jalisco Undertakes operate
permanently; certificate courses to develop business models fo-
cused on businessmen in the industry, common branding, export
programs, and to incubation business. The general approach is
to develop products to satisfy niche markets.
naTionaldeSignerS
Christianlayolle(FashionMag,Frenchinternetpublica-
tion, participant). He posed a question to the panelists: Why
if the idea is to encourage national designers, the runway parade
opening the Intermoda was opened by a foreign brand?
anaMárgararodríguez(fashionconsultant,participant).
There are spaces in the national media, especially television and
prints, where you can submit design pieces, part of the apparel
of celebrities or models. She urged to consider this opportunity
because she has applied for products many times and has
received little response from businesses and designers.

We present our readers a distance interview with ale rentería on the characteristics and reasons for the new collection.
Why did you choose denim as the most important material in your
collection?
Denim is part of our lives; we all have some clothes made out with this fabric in
the closet, regardless of age, taste, status or lifestyle. Denim is so common and
yet so versatile to suit all personalities. Everyone uses it and combines a taste
for that personal touch, up to the point of making it the favorite piece.
does it obey to an international trend or it is just for using a fiber produc-
tion of intensive use in the domestic market?
In international trends denim is always present; in some seasons it dominates
more than in others, but never left out. My proposal in this collection is an
interpretation of these trends applied to denim. The results are very funny,
innovative and commercial designs and also because, as you say, denim is
used intensively in our market.
What are the treatment and the use you give to denim?
When I decided to develop this proposal, my father [Mexican designer Felipe
Rentería] and I started an exploration into the world of this textile. We learned
a lot in recent months about all that can be done with denim, and the dif-
ficulty has been to choose between a myriad of possibilities to get the most
attractive for this release.
The interesting thing about this learning is that I will continue to develop
proposals for denim, so this does not end here, rather, I can say that this is
just beginning.
do you know who the mexican designer first used denim in international
events?
I know the career of Ramón Valdiosera, who was the first to bring cotton and
denim designs to a runway parade in Paris, and his designs have transcended
beyond our borders in all the arts which he maters. I also admire the work of
Mexican designers like Jorge Lupercio, who has earned recognition for his
designs in cotton cloth and, of course, Rosario Mendoza, of Takasami, who
makes her collections with handmade Mexican fabrics and textiles for export
to the United States and to several European countries. I think they are a great
example for new generations of designers.
have you any plans to export the collection or exhibit it in some inter-
national fair?
Our priority remains the domestic market, but we are working together with
a Spanish company to export to the European Union.

A veces me

at this moment there is a fashion revolution. it can be said that there is a good-sized
group of peruvian designers already. Definitively, there is something happening in our
countries and somehow also in Mexico. i believe that within our genes that spark
exists. We are creative, we are artists by nature.
there was a time of a very depressing crisis and that caused that peru had a
delay of 20 years in everything. We have awakened, but it seems we got used to the
slowness. Suddenly the world was experiencing the globalizing trend and we realized
what was going on around and that we were light-years behind. We got going and
now already there exists a large and strong fashion industry in peru.
also because, once again comparing ourselves with Mexico, we have a land that
is a blessing, we have wonders and jewels. in my country we have the alpaca, the
vicuña, the pima cotton, and in metals: gold, silver… that’s what makes us different
and of course to have at hand such wonders to work with.
Howdidyoustart:byfosteringeducation,orhowdidyoudoit?
the process was that a small group of people impelled it, among which i can say i
collaborated and contributed with my grain of sand. the truth is that i felt so sad
whenever i saw that the art of china, Mexico and india was clearly identified, and
peru’s art did not exist. that one was the first thing that drove me. Behind and side
by side there were other people with the same ideal, and i believe that way heroic
deeds began.
i went from a community to another and saw what they were making, what were
the prettiest things than they could do, and i started building a small collection of
wallets or belts or whatever, producing pieces to sell to the limeans. in the past this
popular art was not regarded with so much love and, nowadays, the average peruvian
man or women has undergone an incredible change, i believe that so far there is not
a peruvian man or woman that does not adore the importance and the wealth of
our country; but that’s why our small group has stood out and began to work on it,
attaching a value to it, bringing it to a more fashionable world.
i said to myself “how is it possible that in these communities, with so many people
endowed with wonderful manual abilities, can be starving, while having this gift in
their hands”. and this way large groups have sprung up that have work today and
that’s how they earn a livelihood, because through this effort work can be generated
for them; and, so i have many communities working with me. of all the pieces that i
present in intermoda, 80 percent is made by diverse communities of my country and
in lima only the final assembly is made.

around five designers, more or less, started it. So far there are hundreds. there’s a
piece of fabric called la yiya, which for me is the most important piece in the clothes
of the peruvian andean woman that used to be despised; it’s in that piece of cloth
in which the babies are wrapped up and carried, it’s a custom. it was one of the first
things that i made. i took that fabric and made a pretty bag with it, and a revolution
was touched off: the girls collected them by color, it was something astonishing.
Soon i launched another bag which i called the cholita. the andean women can
be very poor, but they always wear a small hat and they carry their bag in the wrist
very coquettishly. i went after them and beg them to sell them to me; they were the
source of my inspiration and launched my own collection with great acceptance,
and soon thereafter many other women jumped into the bandwagon and said “that
is business”, but what satisfied me the most was to have struck the heart of the
peruvian women, convincing them that what is ours is beautiful. Sometimes they
say to me that i lack ambition, because my mission is not selling in great amounts,
for i do it out of passion and love of my country, and that combination was the basic
ingredient for my passion not to wither away, but a way to set the point so that other
women could do the same.

i have a very important market in europe. through a representative in Madrid, i sell
in diverse boutiques in Spain, australia and in Japan. Within Madrid, in the museum
thyssen - i know because every year they celebrate a painter. last year it was Matisse,
and i, through the pictures, presented a collection for them to sell, because they
are with reserved rights. it has many striped elements and i presented handmade
handkerchiefs made out of pima cotton that have been sold successfully.

i have known this fair for approximately seven years. Back then i
was in the Guadalajara buying office of domestic products. the
last time i came was one and a half years ago, because i went to
calexico, california, to the buying office of imports. Honestly, this
time i had a chance to come i am most impressed, we entertained
the idea that the level of quality of the suppliers was declining,
since it was clear to us that the fair was getting smaller, the crisis
had an adverse effect on it. this time we were really taken by it.
the truth is that it has improved a lot; we are awfully pleased
with this edition.
Forwhatsegmentdoyoubuyinintermoda?coppel is a company that caters to the middle and low classes;
there are certain suppliers completely out of our range. i found
lots of domestic and international suppliers. What it is best for us
is the fact that many of the suppliers i buy from and that i used
to get in touch with in Magic in las Vegas, and in Fashion Week
of Hong Kong attend this trade show. it is easier and cheaper for
me to see them here, because the trips to Hong Kong usually take
two weeks, besides the jet lag and the overall fatigue you have to
endure, so for me it is fantastic to meet them here.

Yes of course. We have tried many suppliers, even some ones i
have found here, and sometimes these suppliers are not mature
enough to provide the amounts that coppel needs. However, i
have to recognize in this trade show very strong coppel suppliers,
which i think they are quite strong in other chains as well.

in general terms, we seek to take advantage of the strengths
of the supplier. that is, if the company makes products for
children and is stronger in goods for baby, this is where we
focus our purchases and the comments we do. if this supplier
wants to shift to another area, then it might lose its relative
strength and our interest might wane.
it has to be a responsible supplier interested in attending
this type of events, where, it can learn about new trends, colors,
techniques. Most of them seek suppliers’ fairs fit for them,
that is, prints, fittings… and he or she has to be genuinely
committed to improve the company.

indispensable, we can have very good suppliers without

i believe that in coppel, as in every other company, we
prefer the domestic supplier for its time of response. if we

más importante de investigación de España, INESCOP, presentó su prototipo de zapatería virtual;

the health factor is becoming more important. the technology that corrects the lumbar posi-
tion, protects the joints and tones up muscles, it is already present in models of daily use.
Heeled shoes that do not hurt: with this attractive slogan the european brand cotton Walk
drew the attention of buyers in the recent edition of the fair of footwear and leather M+i. the
buyers expressed their amazement at seeing the signature models in the treadmills and, of
course, using high-heeled shoes. "the most comfortable shoe in the world" and "the softest
footwear in the world" are other examples of phrases used by the exhibitors, this trend of
bringing comfort and health to a level beyond fashion.
another novelty shown in this event of leather and footwear is that the most important
research institution in Spain, ineScop, presented a prototype of a virtual shoe store, this is
a shop for the immediate future, in which customers, thanks to two biomechanical systems
that analyze the motion and the plantar pressures, may have its own Dni of the foot, i. e., an
identification document that collects untransferable personal and non anatomical and func-
tional data of the user foot, so that he or she can know what shoe best fits his or her needs.
the twenty-fifth edition of this european event is gaining ground to the global economy
downturn and achieves a positive balance, which exceeded the initial expectations of the
organizers; 314 exhibitors with 702 brands, which means a slight increase of two percent in
space hired for the show, but more important was the growth of 10 percent attendance of
buyers, both in comparison with the previous edition. now, 9,934 buyers toured the exhibition,
which first introduced footwear, leather and fur.
Glam Space, meanwhile, achieved the highest growth by doubling the number of participat-
ing firms; many of them have already expressed interest in participating in the next edition.
in this space exhibited the most fashionable and elegant designers.
the next season autumn-winter 2010-2011 will be marked by classic sobriety, with a color
palette tinged with violet, dark gray, blue, brown, maroon and bottle green, among others.
Sober skins dominated in this sample, but we also saw a lot of models with long hair fur and
some combinations of reptiles. the ornaments of porcelain, embroidery and lace strap with
beads gave a touch of luster to this collection.
Meanwhile, Fice (Federation of Spanish Footwear industries) gave a good use of their
space within the exhibition and remounted ideaslab, innovation space for trade ideas. this
area offered a full program of lectures by leading experts in different areas of retail. "the
success of buyers translates into success for our members," said to KS imanol Martínez of
Fice, project manager.
"Visual marketing to win," was the theme with which the specialist carlos aires, of
Marketing Jazz, warned attendees about the importance of a good display of products in
an appropriate environment. Sergio Sanchez-Quiñones, FicoeM, developed the theme of
human resources and treatment to the client. the lectures lasted for the 3 days of the event
and became an invaluable tool for attendees.

Milan, Italy. The edition hosted more than 1,500 exhibitors,
including the symbolic participation of Mexican brands.
The foreign presence occupied more than a third of the
fair, without overshadowing the local representation, which
aims to revive business through MICAM. The industry suffered
in 2009 a fall of 13% in terms of production among ANCI
(Italian Association of Footwear Producers) members, but
their "Made in Italy" pride have lead them to participate
more forcefully to overcome the crisis.
Vito Artioli, president of ANCI, said that "innovation at
all levels to transform challenges into opportunities is the
key to overcoming the crisis", and at the end of the event, he
said: "We are pleased with the results of MICAM Shoevent;
they can be interpreted as one of the first signs of recovery
expected for a long time.” The success of MICAM was rated,
not only by the number of visitors, which this year came to
36,623, but by the comments of the exhibitors agreeing that
the results were positive.
Mexico was present again at this fair with children's shoes
and boots. Odett Polo, of Boots Rudel, mentioned from the
first day of the event that the results were appearing faster
and that certainly they would participate in later editions.
An important factor that played in this edition was to
demonstrate how technology and the environment are not
two incompatible elements in the shoe industry. The industry
is working for it and shows a great sensitivity on the issue of
eco-compatibility.
The trend is marked by the application of technology in
materials. The shoe is influenced by the colors of the nine-
ties (black and gray), all in an austere minimalist style; the
same style applies also for men’s shoes, but influenced by the
design of the twenties and highlighting the contrast between

COLOMBIATEXDatos claros de recuperación clear signs of recovery
a comprar insumos y diseño.ThelasteditionofColombiatexFashionShowchangedthemoodofbothbuyersandexhibitorsregardinglastyear’seconomicsituation

the positive outlook started with the meeting that Álvaro Uribe, president of
the republic of colombia, held with manufacturers and the press corps the first
day of the fair. in a straightforward way, the problems that affect the sector
were exposed in order for the involved parties, by indication of the president,
could analyze each one and even some solutions therein could be offered.
During the press conference about results, carlos eduardo Botero, execu-
tive director inexmoda, highlighted the fact that the number of international
buyers grew considerably. the most numerous delegations were Mexico’s
and ecuador’s with a respective increase of 35 and 28 percent, with respect
to the 2009 edition.
the global result as provided by the organizers of the colombian fair was
8,879 international buyers from 22 countries that in turn represented 426
companies, of which 206 attended for the first time the fair and therefore
for the first time they visited the city of Medellín.
the target was clear: to achieve half as much again of international buyers,
for which 3,959 business appointments were scheduled; 425 were carried on
in the business center and the rest in the fair booths.

For the textile-apparel industry, of colombiatex is the starting point to locate
the most innovative and demanding supplies of the season.
at the closing of the fair, according to information provided by the proexport
committee, total business transactions reached 84 185 900 dollars, quite
above those of the past edition, estimated in 68 million dollars.
the countries that bought the most were ecuador, with quite a large
delegation; USa; Mexico; central america, and peru.
Business expectations with the USa increased from 4 percent last
year to 18 percent in this edition; in the meantime, Mexico registered an
increase of more than 100 percent, that is, from 7 to 17 percent; peru, on

its part, went from 5 to 7 percent; central america from 8.4 to 11.7 percent,
and ecuador from 7.2 to 19 percent. the surprising note was struck by Brazil
that registered transactions for the first time in this fair with 2 percent of
total expected business.
Mexicanbusinessmenbuysuppliesanddesign
For Mexican buyers, their presence in this event was useful to know about
colombian fashion, trends, the variety of denims and closing deals with
colombian suppliers. that is the case of Daniel Shehoa of carranza Jeans.
So far this is his second visit to the fair, and he realized that the greatest
inconvenience to do business was the foreign exchange disparity: “i know the
prices are going up; i think that the prices in Mexico are slightly lower.”
regarding quality, he is certain it is quite similar to the Mexican one, but
anyway he attends the colombian fairs seeking fashion and proposals: “we
expect to be able to buy denims, and other supplies that we might not find
in Mexico. this year this will mean an investment of one million dollars, only
in colombia”.
With respect to the differentiation between the Mexican textile-apparel
industry and the colombian one, he said: “i believe our industry is frankly
growing, the whole world is watching Mexico, thanks to the design and qual-
ity that we have incorporated into our products during these past years. now
more than ever, being in a country such as colombia, i realize that the Mexican
industry is on the right track.”
in general terms, both the apparel industry and exports and tourism
the 2010 edition of colombiatex showed clear signs of recovery, besides
providing excellent business opportunities.

and it became clear in May or June of 2009 that the banking situation and consumer confidence
in asia as well as the confidence generated by the governments in asia was strong enough to
continue growth in the GDp. that’s not to say that in manufacturing countries such as china
or Korea or india or indonesia were not affected by and are still affected by the crisis in the
United States and europe. But what it has meant is that the internal markets of asia have been
stimulated more, which i believe is the beginning of the new asian era.

i think that certainly this is an opportunity for them. now for instance in footwear you’ve got
the high end which is already there but that is a very small percentage. the challenge is for
european and american brands is now to retail in asia, particularly in china. there is a very big
frustration, for instance, for chinese manufacturers that they do not have strong enough brands
but that is not to say that there are not some reasonably successful brands in china and they
are getting stronger. the shift i am describing is not something that will happen in one or two
years; in fact it could happen over the next ten years. For instance you have seen in india this
year – rather last year – that they have sold for the first time more than 2 million motor cars.
in china last year they sold some 13.6 million. it is the biggest demand ever. the average price
of the motor cars is quite low but these are new consumers who will increase the average price
of their cars as they get more money.

if you take the italians for instance, they have been exporting finished leathers to china for many
years and products using italian leather and accessories have been exported from china for many
years, so there is no problem in the production or utilization of finished leathers in china and in
india is very good today and will be in the future. i cannot see it changing for quite some time.
if you take Brazil today, argentina and Mexico are all exporting finished leathers which pass
through Hong Kong and Shanghai. For finished products Brazil has a terrific opportunity because
they have a lot of branded finished goods here and if they are marketed correctly they will have
a very good market (in asia). not only china but into Japan, india and Korea or anywhere in asia
since everywhere in asia the consumers are looking for new products, new ideas….i think that
one of problems though (in Brazil) is that the local market is too active but for those companies
that want to take the opportunity and get their brands to these new markets, now is the time
to be starting. Do not expect it to happen overnight; you will need to take a good four or five
years of consistent marketing and gain the links with distributors, agents and also retailers in
the region. and it is not something, for instance, where you say that you are going to china and
sell your brand there through one agent. it is not going to happen like that. the development
of the distribution system in china and india is still very basic but it is changing fast. the people
involved are getting more experience and are growing: there is an opportunity for companies
to export their brands to those countries now and to start to get them into the market. But
at the same time you have to be able to match your brand marketing with marketing design
which is different. in other words you need to adapt your product to the market and have a USp
No preveo
nados a Hong Kong y Shanghái.
No

(unique selling point). You just can’t export and leave it since you will not gain any traction. it is
not about just respecting local tastes it is also a question of fashion. in the past these people
(distributors, for example) had no idea as they were working in the factories.
to give you an example - last year there was a big UK tannery that got a contract with Volvo
china to produce finished leather for the car upholstery. this factory in china is producing the
Volvo 70 but only for the chinese market. all of the production in china of this model will have
leather upholstery whereas the production in europe only has about 20%-30% with leather
upholstery. now why is this? Because the new chinese buyer believes that if he buys a Volvo it’s
an up-market brand and it can only have leather in it and they will only ask for leather upholstery.
and this is the market where just twenty years ago people were still riding bicycles.

i don’t agree that the fairs have ever been tourist attractions. However, when marketing funds
were a little more liberal in previous years companies spent their marketing funds in a different
way. there was more money spent on taking more employees to fairs and there were more par-
ties, for instance, to get a better feeling about buyers’ attitudes towards a company’s brands.
But after several economic crises the attitude has been to limit the number of people who went
to the fairs to those who actually do the business. and certainly from our fairs i can say that
in the old days and even now they are places where you can gain a reference and a feel of the
attendance, of the market, of the colors, of the trends.
this last year, as we mentioned earlier, has shown that the major fairs have not been af-
fected by the crisis because the marketing funds of those companies have been limited. So to
make the most of those funds, they only go to the larger fairs where they know that they will
meet the most important buyers and exhibitors.

Going back about fifteen years tokyo had the possibility to do that but they did not take the
opportunity and because they went into a recession for many years they lost that chance. But
there is a position today where in Hong Kong – and it’s not there yet – that there are fashion
designers, buyers – international buyers who are based in Hong Kong…that i feel could make
Hong Kong an international reference in the future to be the “paris of the east”, for instance.
So if you take the designers in tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok and those coming up in
india – they are all too small at present – in terms of a “critical mass”…i believe that in time all
these will come together and form what could be another new “design hub”. london and new
York. this also makes me think of South america where there are good possibilities for Buenos
aires and São paolo in terms of design driving fashion trends.

Honrarás a tu cliente y a tu proveedor
no rematarás
cradas: proveedor, tienda, cliente.
inclusive tendencias.
no cometerás actos desleales
no estafarás
youshallloveyourstoreaboveallotherstores
there is no better way to teach our associates a sense of belonging, than being
proud of ourselves and of what we sell. to be able to represent the company (as
if they were owners themselves) does not mean only to believe in the products
we sell, but also wear them proudly.
youshallnottakethenameofyourbrandinvain
the name is paramount, since it is the label with which our consumers will remind
us and, above all, with which they will recommend us through word-of-mouth
advertising. the name should reflect the personality of our store and should
denote its style when it is mentioned. remember we are not just mere suppliers
of textiles or footwear; we are creators of a shopping experience and we carry a
pride that should permeate the consumer.
youshallsanctifythebrands
For cheaper or generic a commodity is, we must always give it the right place
so its exposure becomes exponential, up to the point to be coveted by our cus-
tomers. never underestimate the new brands or the national ones, since, with
proper promotion and marketing, they can become a bestseller and, therefore,
an extraordinary source of revenue and profits.
youshallhonoryourcustomerandyoursupplier
the service we provide must always focus on loyalty, not only to our customers
but also to our suppliers. Having good relations with them will ensure a correct
and constant supply of goods and obtaining discounts and scoops ahead of the
competition. also, never underestimate a client: there is no small consumer or an
austere customer, the sense of belonging and the aspiration ideology are always
present in any social stratum. remember that perhaps in those drab pants or that
worn bag, there is a credit card ready to be devoured by our payment terminal.
youshallnotauctionoffgoods
the auction of goods is never good for any of the three parties involved: sup-
plier, store, and customer. the first has to absorb part of the rebate, or receive
the goods back that were on consignment. the store, in turn, reduces its profits
and encourages the rotation of products, and the client, meanwhile, stresses
himself looking for his or her size in a pile of clothes of all colors and textures,
and even trends.
youshallnotcommitunfairacts
But the reality is that as the foam, that which rises fast disappears fast. let us
put aside the unfair practices and perform an ethic work in our stores. it not only
will benefit us but also it will help us to improve the internal atmosphere. as it is
said, "what the boss does, the clerk imitates."
youshallnotcheat
We should never try to sell pirated merchandise as original, when we know that it
is not. Such action is not only a crime that is punished with prison. the credibility
of our customer is an intangible asset, but of great value to the operation of our
company. its loss could be catastrophic.
youshallnotmakefalsepromisesortelllies
it is easy to make false promises to close a sale, but when you have to fulfill them,
things can go wrong. the best shopping experience for a customer is one in which,
over time, he or she feels satisfied with the investment, however small it was.
youshallnotcondoneexcessivebudgetsorunnecessaryorders.
it is common for emotions to master us and to think more with the stomach than
with the brain. Spending more than what you have or ordering goods that we
know they are not going to be sold.
youshallnotcovettheconceptofforeignbrands
We are constantly aware of what is going on in the market, and there is nothing
wrong with doing it because it keeps us informed and updated, the problem lies
in trying to do, or have exactly the same as the store that we have idealized.
each store has its own personality, which it was developed after a survey and an
in-depth image analysis.
