Henry Clifford
Clifford.

ACT ONE
Scene 1
(Palm Sunday 1461. A dell in the north of
England)
Prelude
(A chorus of children, men and women enter
right and cross the stage in festive procession.)
CHILDREN, MEN, WOMEN
Sloes are blossoming in the hedges,
warbles singing in the sedges;
Spring returning to the dingle
brings the palm,
Winter s balm,
while the merry bells, merry bells jingle.
Starry celandine is blowing,
late unfettered streams are flowing.
Cherub children from the dingle
bear the palm,
Lenten balm,
while the merry bells, merry bells jingle.
Scene 2
PRIMER ACTO
Escena 1
(Domingo de ramos de 1461. Un valle al
norte de Inglaterra)
Preludio
(Coro de niños, hombres y mujeres cruzando
la escena en alegre comitiva)
NIÑOS, HOMBRES, MUJERES
Las endrinas florecen en los matorrales,
las currucas cantan en los cañaverales.
La primavera, al regresar a las cañadas,
las inunda con sus ramos,
bálsamos de invierno,
mientras que las campanas repiquetean alegres.
La estrellada celidonia flota al viento
y los arroyos, súbitamente liberados, resuenan.
Los angelicales niños del valle
llevan los ramos,
bálsamos de la Cuaresma,
mientras que las campanas repiquetean alegres.
Escena 2
(Lady Clifford and her retinue appear stage right.
They are closely followed by Lady Clifford's son
Henry)
Duet
LADY CLIFFORD
Our Lady of Bolton preserve thee,
Henry mine!
HENRY
A messenger
arrived but now. At Towton,
through the live-long night
in blinding snow, in driving sleet,
their forces meet!
LADY CLIFFORD
May God support the right!
HENRY
The stream is choked with bodies of the dead.
The waves run red!
Lady Clifford
Alas! Thy father... What of him?
HENRY
He lives and leads.
Lady Clifford
Ah!
The Holy Saints be praised!
HENRY
False Saint John leads against him.
LADY CLIFFORD
Recreant knight!
HENRY
And Gloucester!
LADY CLIFFORD
Name of dread.
He in whose breast, implacable, resides
the poison of revenge,
whose flooding tides,
an ever broadening horror, first arose
when York slew Clifford at St. Albans;
thence it took a gathering wave,
till Clifford's son, at Wakefield,
vented vengeance on that York
and now, alies!
the outraged blood of York
maddens this Gloucester,
crying: "Blood for blood!"
HENRY
O, Mother, why
aguijonea a Gloucester gritándole:
"¡Sangre por sangre!"
HENRY
¡Oh, madre!
didst thou deny
my longing for the fray?
I was no knight
to shun the fight,
my mother to obey!
LADY CLIFFORD
Ah! Who have I
if Clifford die
at yonder fearful fray?
Thou art my might,
my fife, my light!
Desert me not, I pray!
HENRY
Someone approaches.
CHILDREN
(returning)
Sloes are blossoming in the hedges,
warbles singing in the sedges;
Spring returning to the dingle
brings the palm,
Winters balm,
while the merry bell, merry bells jingle.
Scene 3
(Enter Lady Saint John. She approaches Lady Clifford.)
Duet
LADY SAINT JOHN
So am I quite unknown?
LADY CLIFFORD
Thy voice is like an echo from the past.
LADY SAINT JOHN, LADY CLIFFORD
(alternately)
For we were playmates when the world was young.
(Lady Clifford looks more closely at Lady Saint
John and recognises her.)
LADY CLIFFORD
The Lady Saint John!
HENRY
This the famous witch!
LADY SAINT JOHN
Say rather "Sibyl", as thou Margaret art.
Those names ran
riot over every heart
when we were playmates
and the world was young.
LADY CLIFFORD, LADY SAINT JOHN
O happy days
¿Por qué no quisiste
que partiera al combate?
¡Me avergüenzo de ser un caballero
que rehuye la lucha,
por obedecer a su madre!
LADY CLIFFORD
¡Ah! ¿Qué sería de mí
sí Clifford muriera
en esa terrible batalla?
¡Tú eres mi fuerza,
mi vida y mi luz!
¡No me abandones, te lo suplico!
HENRY
¡Alguien viene!...
NIÑOS
(volviendo)
Las endrinas florecen en los matorrales,
las currucas cantan en los cañaverales.
La primavera, al regresar a las cañadas,
las inunda con sus ramos,
bálsamos de invierno,
mientras que las campanas repiquetean alegres.
Escena 3
(Entra Lady Saint John)
Dúo
LADY SAINT JOHN
¿No me reconoces?
LADY CLIFFORD
LADY SAINT JOHN, LADY CLIFFORD
(alternativamente)
Jugábamos juntas en nuestra infancia.
(Lady Clifford mira atentamente a Lady
Saint John y la reconoce.)
LADY CLIFFORD
¡Lady Saint John!
HENRY
¡La famosa bruja!
LADY SAINT JOHN
LADY CLIFFORD, LADY SAINT JOHN
¡Oh, días felices
when we were mays
and roamed among
the woodland ways!
No more we reck
of forest bowers,
no more we deck
our frocks with flowers.
The lovers' bird
no more is heard!
His song was sung
when the world was young!
O happy days
when we were young!
LADY CLIFFORD
But thou has bome the rebel rose of white!
My rose is rose!
LADY SAINT JOHN
My name, but not my heart
bore bastard roses.
Husbands may some reason,
but never wife nor mother,
to do treason.
LADY CLIFFORD
Then thou dost not espouse thy husband's cause?
LADY SAINT JOHN
King Henry is my king!
My husband is a renegade,
false to his vow,
to knighthood and the Throne!
Against all the stars fight in their courses.
King Henry is my king!
Henry is my king!
LADY CLIFFORD
Thou art unhappy,
I am glad thou cam'st!
LADY CLIFFORD. LADY SAINT JOHN
O happy days, etc.
Scene 4
Trio
HENRY
(to his mother)
Beware! She is a witch!
LADY SAINT JOHN
Do thou beware!
Above thy head,
detested care
and doomful dread
are downward hovering
through the air!
cuando aun éramos doncellas
y vagábamos
por los caminos del bosque!
No teníamos otra preocupación
que la de recoger
con nuestras faldas
las flores de los tibios invernaderos.
¡El canto amoroso de los pájaros
hace tiempo que ya no se oye!
¡Ese canto se escuchaba
en nuestra infancia!
¡Oh, días felices,
de nuestra pasada juventud!
LADY CLIFFORD
LADY SAINT JOHN
LADY CLIFFORD
Eres desgraciada...
Me alegro que hayas venido.
LADY CLIFFORD, LADY SAINT JOHN
¡Oh, días felices, etc.
Escena 4
Trío
HENRY
(a su madre)
¡Ten cuidado! ¡Es una bruja!
LADY SAINT JOHN
¡Tú eres quien tiene que tener cuidado!
¡Sobre tu cabeza
se agitan en el aire
malignas inquietudes;
y un terror fatal
se cierne sobre ti!
LADY CLIFFORD
Oh say not so!
HENRY
Believe her not!
LADY CLIFFORD
Oh! Cruel hour!
LADY SAINT JOHN
I come to save thee from the foe!
HENRY
Believe her not!
LADY CLIFFORD
(to Lady Saint John)
Oh! might I dare to trust thy power!
HENRY
(to Lady Clifford)
Believe her not!
LADY SAINT JOHN
(to Henry)
Do thou beware!
Scene 5
(Enter a messenger.)
MESSENGER
All is lost!
The battle's o'er!
King Henry's forces fly!
Lord Clifford's men are slain!
LADY CLIFFORD
What of my lord?
MESSENGER
I know no more!
LADY SAINT JOHN
(to Henry)
Thus I foretold thy destiny!
Worse tidings yet remain.
HENRY
But I defy unholy art and prophecy!
LADY SAINT JOHN
To fight with fate is vain!
HENRY
But I defy thy prophecy!
LADY CLIFFORD
What of my lord?
LADY CLIFFORD
¡Oh, no digas eso!
HENRY
¡No la creas!
LADY CLIFFORD
¡Oh! ¡Hora cruel!
LADY SAINT JOHN
¡He venido para salvarte del enemigo!
HENRY
¡No la creas!
LADY CLIFFORD
(a Lady Saint John)
¡Oh, si yo me atreviera a confiar en tu poder!
HENRY
(a Lady Clifford)
¡No la creas!
LADY SAINT JOHN
(a Henry)
¡Ten cuidado!
Escena 5
(Entra un mensajero.)
MENSAJERO
¡Todo se ha perdido!
¡La batalla ha terminado!
¡Las tropas del rey Henry han huido!
¡Los hombres de Lord Clifford han perecido!
LADY CLIFFORD
¿Y qué sabes de mi señor?
MENSAJERO
¡No sé nada más!
LADY SAINT JOHN
(a Henry)
¿Ves como te advertí sobre tu destino?
Y lo peor aun está por llegar...
HENRY
¡Desafío los maleficios impíos y las profecías!
LADY SAINT JOHN
¡Es inútil luchar contra el destino!
HENRY
¡Pero yo desafío tu profecía!
LADY CLIFFORD
¿Qué ha sido de mi señor?
LADY CLIFFORD'S MEN
Beware of the witch
and her evil eye!
Will she swim or sink?
To the pond and try!
If she float, she must swim
on the gallows high.
If she drown, she will die!
Yes, she will die!
Scene 6
(Enter Colin, one of Lord Clifford's men.)
COLIN
Sir John Saint John approaches!
HENRY
(to Lady Saint John)
This was the meaning of thy play!
Thou wouldst prepare thy husband's way!
by preaching peril and dismay!
LADY CLIFFORD'S MEN
Beware of the witch!
Beware of the witch!
LADY CLIFFORD
(to Henry)
Why anger her? She is our friend.
(to Colin)
Thou hadst not brought thy tidings to en end!
What of my Lord?
COLIN
(to point to Henry)
Edward of York sends warrant by Sir John
to seize the land and person of my liege,
Lord Clifford.
LADY CLIFFORD
Lord Clifford!
Then is his father dead?
Speak, for thy silence stabs me!
COLIN
All the night our force he led;
to left and right the foemen fled!
To Gloucester side he carved his way;
"Revenge", they cried, intent to slay.
But spent was Clifford's destrier,
he stumbled; on the field he knelt!
His harness broke!
Then Gloucester dealt
the fatal felon stroke!
LADY CLIFFORD
(faints)
HOMBRES DE LADY CLIFFORD
¡Protejámonos de la bruja
y de su mal de ojo!
¿Flotará o se hundirá?
¡Arrojémosla al estanque y lo comprobaremos!
Si flota, tendrá que nadar allá arriba,
en la horca.
¡Si se hunde, morirá!
¡Sí, morirá!
Escena 6
(Entra Colin, vasallo de Lord Clifford.)
COLIN
¡Sir John Saint John se acerca!
HENRY
(a Lady Saint John)
¡Esta era la finalidad de tu engaño!
¡Querías allanar el camino a tu esposo
predicando el peligro y la angustia!
HOMBRES DE LADY CLIFFORD
¡Apartaos de la bruja!
¡Apartaos de la bruja!
LADY CLIFFORD
(a Henry)
¿Por qué enojarla? Es nuestra amiga.
(a Colin)
¡No has acabado tu relato!
¿Qué ha sido de mi señor?
COLIN
(señalando a Henry)
LADY CLIFFORD
¡Lord Clifford!
Es que... ¿ha muerto su padre?
¡Habla, tu silencio es como una daga!
COLIN
Durante toda la noche dirigió nuestro ejército.
¡El enemigo huía en desbandada!
Gritando "venganza" él se abrió camino
hasta Gloucester resuelto a matarlo.
Pero su caballo, exhausto,
tropezó cayendo de manos...
¡El arnés se partió!
¡Entonces Gloucester le asestó
el golpe fatal!
LADY CLIFFORD
(se desmaya)
Ah!
LADY CLIFFORD'S RETINUE
Pray for the soul of a chieftain departed!
Call on the Virgin, and all the Saints call!
Fiercest of foes,
and of friends truest-hearted,
brave in the battle, and sage in the hall.
Pray for a soul of a knight
never craven!
Through the mêlée how bravely he bore!
Pray for his soul
that it reach a fair haven;
for the bow'r and the battle
shall know him no more!
Pray for the soul of a chieftain departed!
HENRY
To arms! this mandate to resist
writ with my father's blood,
borne by his murderer's dog!
Revenge! Revenge for the dead!
LADY CLIFFORD'S RETINUE
A Clifford! Revenge for the dead!
To arms! To arms!
To arms! To arms!
HENRY, LADY CLIFFORD'S RETINUE
To arms, to arms!
In field and street
now throb all hearts
with joyous pain.
To arms! To arms!
Fond brides repeat
the martial strain!
To arms! To arms!
The mother starts,
the lovers 'plain.
To arms! To arms!
Again! Again!
The warrior cries again, again!
To arms!
Scene 7
Duet
LADY SAINT JOHN
What feeble wit is here
to fancy thou canst dam
this Yorkist deluge with thy fifty pikes?
HENRY
I do not ask thine aid,
but heaven's alone!
LADY SAINT JOHN
All power is God's.
The stars have said,
¡Ah!
¡Venganza! ¡Venguemos al difunto!
SÉQUITO DE LADY CLIFFORD
¡Por Clifford! ¡Venguemos al difunto!
¡A las armas! ¡A las armas!
¡A las armas! ¡A las armas!
HENRY, SÉQUITO DE LADY CLIFFORD
¡A las armas, a las armas!
En los campos y en las ciudades
todos los corazones
palpitan al unísono
transidos de dolor:
¡A las armas! ¡A las armas!
Gritan las esposas:
¡A las armas! ¡A las armas!
y las madres sobresaltadas,
y las desventuradas amantes:
¡A las armas! ¡A las armas!
¡Adelante! ¡Adelante!
Y el guerrero vuelve a gritar:
¡A las armas!
Escena 7
Dúo
LADY SAINT JOHN
¡Qué insensato eres si crees que
podrás detener a los partidarios de York
con tus cincuenta lanzas!
HENRY
¡No he pedido tu ayuda,
sino sólo la del cielo!
LADY SAINT JOHN
¡Todo está en manos de Dios!
He leído en las estrellas
no vengeing brand
can harm thy head,
if thou their high behest obey,
if thou from thoughts of vengeance stay.
HENRY
Away, black beldame! Away!
I do not ask thine aid,
but heaven's alone!
My murdered sire is beckoning,
the foemen are arrayed!
I court the bloody reckoning!
I come, indignant shade!
LADY SAINT JOHN
O take a path more glorious
than war - the path of peace!
From vengeance wild and furious,
from lust of battle cease!
HENRY
(ignoring her)
I take thy weapon gory,
my heritage today!
The blade is stamped with glory;
the hilt is 'graved: "Repay!"
LADY SAINT JOHN
(prophetically)
Love shalt thou find in huts
where poor men lie,
thy daily teachers shall be
woods and rills,...
HENRY
Away! Away!
LADY SAINT JOHN
... the silence that is in the starry skies,
the sleep that is among the lovely hills.
I have a daughter fair, whose sprite
is full of unalloyed delight!
With hers thy better fate is bound!
HENRY
Who duty finds, his fate has found.
LADY SAINT JOHN
To win her love shall be thy task.
HENRY
Away!
No love I give, no love I ask.
LADY SAINT JOHN
Who wins her love must don these weeds.
HENRY
Away! black beldame!
Return again when Clifford needs
que ninguna espada
podrá herirte
si sigues mis consejos,
si reprimes tus deseos de venganza.
HENRY
¡Vete, bruja siniestra! ¡Vete!
¡No he pedido tu ayuda,
sino sólo la del cielo!
Mi padre, asesinado, grita:
¡el enemigo está cerca!
Él tiene sed de venganza...
¡Ya voy, sombra indignada!
LADY SAINT JOHN
¡Oh, emprende un camino más glorioso
que el de la guerra: el de la paz!
¡Renuncia a la terrible venganza,
renuncia al ansia de combatir!
HENRY
HENRY
¡Vete! ¡Bruja siniestra!
¡Vuelve cuando Clifford
to cheat his peril with a base disguise!
Let thy false husband come!
Reserve thy charms to turn him back
again from false to true!
To arms! To arms!
LADY SAINT JOHN
Beware! Beware!
(Lady Clifford comes over to them, having recovered
from her fainting fit. Henry goes to meet her.)
LADY CLIFFORD
O woe! O woe!
O dreadful hour! Oh!
(to Lady Saint John)
If within this holy place
of heavenly guerdon, heavenly grace,
thou mayst aid my labouring heart
to bring forth hope,
grudge not thy art!
LADY SAINT JOHN
Oh! Bend a moment from thine awful throne,
thou angel of the universal chime!
Vouchsafe a vision of the future, thrown
like shadows forward on the clouds of time!
(Annie Saint John appears.)
ANNIE
Sweet are the visions, mysteriously stealing
out of the future on wings of happy dreams!
Sweet is the comfort that spirits come revealing,
showing the promise that on the pathway gleams.
Let the youth follow the spirit of the maiden,
her who is destined alone to be his mate.
She will protect him, eternally love-laden,
be his wing, fairy, the guardian of his fate!
LADY CLIFFORD'S RETINUE
Follow the woman spirit!
Onward and upward flash!
Far, far away the demons,
plying their pinions, gnash!
Follow the spirit through the noxious night!
Follow the woman spirit!
Follow her like the swallow
seeking for love and light!
LADY CLIFFORD
The foe draws near!
HENRY
(to Annie)
O maiden dear,
I'll win thee if I may!
tenga necesidad de vencer el peligro
con un disfraz de cobarde!
¡Que venga el traidor de tu esposo!
¡Guarda tus sortilegios para tenerlo a tus pies!
¡A las armas! ¡A las armas!
LADY SAINT JOHN
¡Cuidado! !Ten cuidado!
(Lady Clifford se incorpora tras recuperarse
del desmayo. Henry va a su encuentro.)
LADY CLIFFORD
¡Misericordia! ¡Ay!
¡Oh, hora terrible! ¡Oh!
(a Lady Saint John)
Si en este lugar sagrado
de recompensa y gracia celestial,
puedes socorrer a mi afligido corazón
haciendo nacer en él la esperanza,
¡sé generosa con tu magia!
LADY SAINT JOHN
¡Oh, ángel de la harmonía celestial,
sírvete inclinarte, por tan solo un instante,
desde tu trono terrible!
¡Envíanos una imagen del futuro!
(Aparece Annie Saint John.)
ANNIE
LADY CLIFFORD
¡El enemigo está cerca!
HENRY
(a Annie)
¡Oh, querida doncella,
intentaré conquistarte!
LADY SAINT JOHN
Then doff the silk and satin,
And don the serge and say!
There is none other way.
HENRY
I would not doff mine honour!
LADY SAINT JOHN
I swear by yonder holy shrine:
in feast and field it shall be thine!
LADY CLIFFORD
Hear her, for mother's sake!
HENRY
For thee I'd take
more shameful garments!
and, that maid to win,
go barefoot ev'ry day!
LADY CLIFFORD
Come hither, Colin, faithful henchman, thou!
Be thou his guardian, 'til our roses grow
unbleached again!
(To Henry)
Upon Blencathara fells,
a lonely cottage stands, 'tis thine! Away!
May heaven confirm the right
when I am dispossessed!
LADY SAINT JOHN
I'll make it sure with spells.
(horns offstage)
LADY CLIFFORD
Blissful Mary, mother mild,
maid and mother undefiled,
save a mother and her child!
(Saint John's troops come into view.)
SIR JOHN'S MEN
Edward the king! March with a swing!
Follow the falcon and swift be his wing!
Hey for rose white, Warwick's delight!
Leave the red rose to the crow and the kite!
Margret may dance back into France!
Edward Plantagenet comes to his right!
SIR JOHN
(approaching them)
Where is the Lady Clifford?
LADY CLIFFORD
I am here!
LADY SAINT JOHN
¡Entonces quítate la seda y el satén
y ponte la sarga y la estameña!
No hay otro camino.
HENRY
¡No quiero mancillar mi honor!
LADY SAINT JOHN
LADY CLIFFORD
¡Escúchala, por el amor de tu madre!
HENRY
¡Por ti vestiría
las prendas más despreciables!
Y para conquistar a esta doncella,
¡caminaría descalzo todos los días!
LADY CLIFFORD
¡Acércate, Colin, fiel escudero!
¡Sé su protector hasta que nuestras rosas
dejen de empalidecer!
(A Henry)
En los páramos de Blencathara
hay una casita solitaria... ¡Es tuya!... ¡Ve!
¡Que el cielo confirme este regalo
ahora que ya no poseo nada!
LADY SAINT JOHN
La protegeré con mis sortilegios.
(se oyen cuernos fuera de escena)
LADY CLIFFORD
Bienaventurada María, dulce madre,
virgen y madre inmaculada,
SIR JOHN
(acercándose a ellos)
¿Dónde está Lady Clifford?
LADY CLIFFORD
¡Estoy aquí!
SIR JOHN
King Edward...
LADY CLIFFORD
He was never king of mine!
SIR JOHN
But Towton placed the sceptre in his hand!
King Edward bids me to deliver these.
By these it is commanded, thine estates
of Bolton, Barden and Blencathara
are forfeited to me,
Sir Saint John, knight!
By these, a thousand pounds upon the head
of Clifford have been set, alive or dead!
Where is thy son?
LADY CLIFFORD
Safe! Safe beyond the seas!
LADY CLIFFORD'S RETINUE,
SIR JOHN'S MEN
Safe! Safe! Beyond the seas!
Ah!
LADY CLIFFORD'S RETINUE
Safe, safe may Clifford float
beyond our island moat!
No foe of his shall make us
sow or reap
until his banner
finds again its native wind,
and burgeon o'er the land from Barden keep!
Safe! Safe! Beyond the seas!
SIR JOHN'S MEN
Safe, safe beyond the seas!
What lying tales are these,
o man of arrows, and o man of sheep?
A lesson learnt by rote,
that droning children patter, half asleep:
"Safe! Beyond the moat!"
HENRY
(to him)
Though safe beyond the foam,
revenge would bring him home
to scourge the cowards
that make widows weep!
Though safe beyond the seas
while winter fortune freeze,
the young world bear him
fiercely o'er the deep!
No foe of his shall make us
sow or reap, etc.
Safe! Safe! Beyond the seas!
LADY CLIFFORD
Safe, safe beyond the seas
of fortune and the grave,
SIR JOHN
El rey Eduardo...
LADY CLIFFORD
¡Él nunca ha sido mi rey!
SIR JOHN
me sean entregados a mí,
¡Mil libras vivo o muerto!
¿Dónde está tu hijo?
LADY CLIFFORD
¡A salvo!... ¡A salvo al otro lado del mar!
SÉQUITO DE LADY CLIFFORD,
HOMBRES DE SIR JOHN
¡A salvo! ¡A salvo! ¡Al otro lado del mar!
¡Ah!
¡A salvo! ¡A salvo!
como niños buenos;
"¡A salvo! ¡Al otro lado del foso!"
HENRY
¡A salvo! ¡A salvo! ¡Al otro lado del mar!
LADY CLIFFORD
o husband, only for thy child I pray!
Ah! My child! Preserve him saints on High!
O, hear the widow's cry!
Restrain his courage
lest his words betray!
No foe of his shall make us
sow or reap, etc.
Safe! Safe! Beyond the seas!
SIR JOHN
(to him)
The nesting plover's cry!
The fledgling must be nigh!
She pipes to lure the falcon from her nest!
Bring hither yonder youth.
Strange words are these, forsooth,
to break the fold of any shepherd's breast.
Safe! Safe! Beyond the seas!
Safe! Safe! Beyond the moat!
¡Oh, esposo mío, sólo rezo por tu hijo!
¡Ah, santos del cielo, proteged a mi hijo!
¡Oh, escuchad el grito de la viuda!
¡Haced que refrene su valor
para que sus palabras no lo delaten!
Ningún enemigo nos hará
sembrar o recolectar, etc.
¡A salvo! ¡A salvo! ¡Al otro lado del mar!
SIR JOHN
¡A salvo! ¡A salvo! ¡Al otro lado del mar!
¡A salvo! ¡A salvo! ¡Al otro lado del foso!
ACT TWO
Scene 1
(The curtain rises to reveal a magical vale, in which
is set a shepherd's hut. Dance of the fairies.)
HENRY (mournfully)
Woe is me to love a fairy!
Lovely Annie is my fate!
Far from me she holds her state;
sprites attend her, gay and airy!
Mortal maids are apt to mate,
of their favours not so chary.
Woe is me to love a fairy!
Lovely Annie is my fate!
Maiden, wilt thou never vary?
Must I always vainly wait?
Never find thee, soon or late,
in a melting mood unwary?
Woe is me to love a fairy!
Woe is me to love a fairy!
Three weary years
cooped up within this dell
have I endured unknightly,
narrow days.
With groans and tears do I,
immured from joyous ways,
my lesson spell of patience and of poverty!
My enemy is yet within my gate;
no hope appears.
Love that dear maid, and yonder stars
that join our fate!
1 see her in my trances,
SEGUNDO ACTO
Escena 1
Muchacha, ¿no cambiarás nunca?
¿Debo esperar en vano?
¿No te encontraré nunca
confiada y dulce?
¡Acá he aprendido a vivir pobre y pacientemente!
El enemigo continúa merodeando,
ya casi he perdido la esperanza.
¡El amor, dulce cómplice, y estas estrellas,
nos unirán!
Cuando te veo en mis sueños
then Heaven unbars!
Her form is mortal, yet
in yonder glade she dances,
with fairy sprites beset!
Woe is me to love a fairy!
Lovely Annie is my fate!
Dance of the fairies
(Henry tries to pursue them. Some gnomes enter,
and by degrees the gnomes and fairies disappear.
Henry endeavours to follow and overtake them.
Once they have disappeared, Henry is left alone.)
FAIRIES (offstage)
Spirits of the flowers
truant from honeyed cages,
haunt the moonlit bowers,
Oberon's maids and pages!
HENRY Alas! A spell my voice oppresses!
I cannot tell my passionate distresses!
Scene 2
(Annie appears stage rear as in a vision.)
Duet
ANNIE Sweet are the visions, mysteriously stealing
Out of the future on wings of happy dreams!
Guardian fairies, haunting
night by night the dell,
guardian fairies, daunting
foemen from the fell,
now the triple time is done,
ceasing with the rising sun!
Farewell!
FAIRIES Farewell! Farewell! Farewell!
(Annie gazes at Henry, who is enraptured.)
HENRY Lovely vision, dream delightful,
wilt thou vanish with the dawn?
Surely lovers' vows are rightful
e'en on fairy forest lawn!
Art thou mortal? Art thou real?
Darting pleasure! Darting pain!
If thou'rt but a form ideal,
never let me wake again!
ANNIE Mortal and immortal, twine
Is my nature, as in thine!
(Henry intenta perseguirlas. Entran algunos
gnomos y desaparecen con las hadas. Henry
se esfuerza por seguirlos. Cuando desaparecen,
Henry se queda solo.)
HADAS (fuera de escena)
Los espíritus de las flores,
escapados de sus doradas prisiones,
deambulan entre los arbustos bajo la luna,
¡Son los pajes y doncellas de Oberón!
HENRY ¡Ay! ¡Un hechizo apaga mi voz!
¡No puedo expresar mis apasionadas angustias!
Escena 2
ANNIE ¡Mortal e inmortal,
doble es mi naturaleza, como la tuya!
HENRY But when man and woman meet,
Loving lip with lip shall meet.
ANNIE I will give thee kisses three,
our eternal bond to be!
But my spirit still is free,
still it walks in robes of white
underneath the forest tree.
Soul with soul may hand in hand...
HENRY ... wander o'er enchanted land!
ANNIE Soul with soul, like children fair...
HENRY ... innocent delight may share!
ANNIE, HENRY Share the rosemary or roses,
share the lesson or the play,
bitter herb or fragrant posies,
balm or burden of the day.
ANNIE My mother made this charm
to do thy foemen harm;
the Yorkist never found
this spot of magic ground.
By Jack o'link decoyed,
by bramble-thorn annoyed,
he wandered round and round.
HENRY So has thy beauty kept my will
from all the circling crowd of ill!
ANNIE I will give thee kisses three,
our eternal bond to be!
HENRY Lovely vision, dream delightful,
wilt thou vanish with the dawn?
Surely lovers' vows are rightful
e'en on fairy forest lawn!
ANNIE Soul with soul, may hand in hand ...
HENRY ... wander o'er enchanted land!
ANNIE, HENRY Bitter herb or fragrant posies,
balm or burden of the day.
HENRY ... compartiendo inocentes gozos!
siempre vagaron a nuestro alrededor.
Scene 3
(Enter Lady Clifford and Lady Saint John.)
LADY CLIFFORD Children, let the plighted troth
like a ring enfold you both;
perfect vow the single twain
god of nature doth ordain.
(Horns sound offstage.)
HENRY (turning and looking in the direction from
which the sound is coming)
'Tis Colin and his merry foresters.
OUTLAWS Merry are we, foresters free,
over the sward and under the tree!
(coming forward)
Sailors may roam over the foam,
the sea is not free as the forest at home.
Who would not be,
in forest free,
a cavalier of luck,
o'er plain and grove
to reign and rove
and shoot the bonny buck?
Hark, comrades a mort!
Hurrah for the sport!
Fat venison down in the valley!
A haunch we will roast
and the damozel toast,
with whom we love dearest to dally.
Hark, comrades a mort!
Hurrah for the sport!
Hark! Hark! They are sounding a rally!
Wind horns in reply o'er the valley!
Hark! Hark! They are sounding a rally!
COLIN (to Henry)
These honest men against their will
are outlaws, but they love thee still!
I am not glib of tongue. In brief,
they fain would have thee for their chief!
HENRY I thank you, friends. To Clifford's name
is welcome any kind of fame.
If Fortune, still a jade unkind,
my prayer should whistle down the wind,
I'll stake upon your desperate chance
to bear the bow and leave the lance.
LADY SAINT JOHN
Escena 3
(aparecen Lady Clifford y Lady Saint John.)
LADY CLIFFORD Queridos, que esa promesa solemne
os ciña como un anillo;
COLIN (a Henry)
Estos proscritos, contra su voluntad,
son hombres honestos y muy de fiar.
Yo soy hombre de pocas palabras... En suma...
¡Ellos estarían orgullosos de tenerte como jefe!
HENRY Os doy las gracias, amigos. Todo el que apoye
a Clifford será bienvenido, sea quien sea.
uniéndome a vosotros.
LADY SAINT JOHN
(to Colin)
Take heed to me!
Be near at noon!
Danger is nigh!
I see, I see,
before the moon
remounts the sky,
the fairy glen
alive with armed men!
Be near at noon!
(Lady Saint John, Lady Clifford, Henry and Annie
withdraw to the shepherd's hut.)
COLIN So mischief brews! Disperse, my men,
but lurk within the echo of my horn!
OUTLAWS (dispersing)
O'er plain and grove
to reign and rove
and shoot the bonny buck!
Scene 4
Ballet and Chorus
(Enter shepherds and peasant girls. They have
prepared a simple meal and are carrying provisions.
The older members of the company sit on the
ground while the youngsters dance)
PEASANT GIRLS, SHEPHERDS When the breezes are still,
and the sheep on the hill
are feeding their fill,
and the merry birds flute,
to dance on the sward
is the shepherd's reward,
ah, ah,
to the tap of the tambour,
the lilt of the lute.
Ah, ah.
(The dancing continues during the chorus, at the
beginning of which Lady Clifford, Lady Saint John,
Annie, Henry and their retinue emerge from the hut;
the peasants finish their dance in front of them.)
Scene 5
(Suddenly, Lady Clifford catches sight of
soldiers approaching.)
LADY CLIFFORD (going over to Henry and embracing him fearfully)
My son! They come to seek thee! Look!
Wilt thou not save thyself and fly?
(a Colin)
¡Escúchame!
¡Estáte cerca al mediodía!
¡El peligro está próximo!
¡Lo veo, lo veo!
Antes de que la luna desaparezca,
el valle de las hadas
parecerá un hormiguero
de hombres armados!
¡Estáte cerca al mediodía!
(Lady Saint John, Lady Clifford, Henry y Annie
¡dispersaros y estad atentos a mi cuerno!
PROSCRITOS (dispersándose)
¡A través de llanuras y prados,
gozando o vagando,
y poder disparar al hermoso ciervo!
Escena 4
Ballet y Coro
Escena 5
(Lady Clifford observa cómo se acercan por
el fondo los soldados.)
LADY CLIFFORD (va hacia Henry y lo abraza)
¡Hijo, vienen a prenderte!... ¡Mira!...
¿No huirás para salvar la vida?
HENRY Nay! Nay! Let them come! Away vile crook!
Give me a sword to do or die!
LADY CLIFFORD My son! Ah! Save thyself and fly!
HENRY Nay! Give me a sword to do or die!
SIR JOHN'S MEN (offstage)
Edward for king! March with a swing!
Follow the falcon, and swift be his wing!
Hey for rose white, Warwick's delight,
hey for rose white, for rose white!
(Enter Sir John with his Yorkist soldiers.)
SIR JOHN (to Henry)
At last, I've limed thee!
Vain this paltry magic
my false wife uses.
Better trust thy sinews,
better trust thy magic,
thy courage if thou hast it,
than wiles of women!
SIR JOHN'S MEN York and Saint George!
Richard of Gloucester for king!
OUTLAWS Treachery!
Mother of God, he's betrayed!
A Clifford's aid!
Richmond for king!
SIR JOHN Thou art attainted;
in King Richard's names
do I arrest thee!
ANNIE Hold! Ah, hold! My father, I love him.
SIR JOHN Shameless! Undutiful!
(to point to Henry)
Bear her to Barden Tower!
HENRY Rally to me, my men!
SIR JOHN What treachery's this? Shameless!
Bear her to Barden Tower!
HENRY ¡No! ¡No! ¡Que vengan! ¡Fuera, vil cayado!
LADY CLIFFORD ¡Hijo, ah, huye y salva tu vida!
HENRY ¡No!
SIR JOHN (a Henry)
¡Por fin te tengo!
La magia de mi artera esposa
no te ha servido de nada.
Hubiera sido mejor que hubieras confiado
en tu fuerza que en la magia;
HOMBRES DE SIR JOHN ¡Por York y San Jorge!
¡Ricardo de Gloucester para rey!
PROSCRITOS ¡Traición!...
¡Por la Virgen, lo han traicionado!
¡Ayudad a Clifford!
¡Richmond para rey!
SIR JOHN Eres culpable
y en nombre del rey Ricardo,
¡quedas arrestado!
ANNIE ¡Detente, ah, detente! ¡Padre mío yo lo amo!
SIR JOHN ¡Insensata! ¡Hija indigna!
(señalando a Henry)
¡Llevadlo a la Torre de Barden!
HENRY ¡A mí, mis hombres!
SIR JOHN ¿Qué significa esto? ¡Insensato!
¡Llevadlo a la Torre de Barden!
ANNIE Father, hold! I love him, him alone!
LADY CLIFFORD My son! Save thyself!
(Annie turns beseechingly to her father, Sir John and
his men continue to threaten Henry and his men.)
SIR JOHN'S MEN Loyally fight ye!
If ye strike boldly
Richard shall knight ye!
York to the onset!
York and Saint George!
Lancaster's sunset,
lingering coldly
here by this dreamer,
knight of the trencher,
rays a last streamer!
Blood be its quencher York!
On! On!
York and Saint George!
OUTLAWS (to Sir John's men)
Worthily fight me!
Freedom doth bond us!
Monarchs withstand us!
Tyrannies right me!
A Clifford! A Clifford!
(to Henry)
Ah! If thou need us,
sons of the forest,
we shall march proudly
whene'er thou warrest!
We shall march proudly
if thou wilt lead us!
Lancaster on! Lancaster on!
HENRY (to his men)
Rally to me my men!
Oh! Worthily fight ye!
On! On! Freedom doth bond ye!
Monarch and mighty,
boasting too loudly,
vainly withstand you.
Rally to me!
SIR JOHN (to his men)
What treachery's this?
Loyally fight ye!
If ye strike boldly
Richard shall knight ye!
York to the onset!
ANNIE ¡Padre, espera! ¡Yo lo amo, lo amo!
LADY CLIFFORD ¡Hijo mío, salva tu vida!
¡Adelante! ¡Adelante!
¡Por York y San Jorge!
PROSCRITOS (a los hombres de Sir John)
¡Luchad con valentía!
¡La libertad nos une!
¡El rey nos teme!
¡Abajo la tiranía!
¡Viva Clifford! ¡Por Clifford!
(a Henry)
¡Ah! ¡Si necesitas
a los hijos del bosque,
acudiremos a luchar
allí donde tú nos llames!
¡Lucharemos valientemente
bajo tu mando!
¡Viva Lancaster! ¡Por Lancaster!
HENRY (a sus hombres)
¡Agrupaos a mi alrededor
y luchad con valentía!
¡Adelante! ¡Adelante! ¡Por la libertad!
El monarca y sus nobles,
hinchados de orgullo,
no podrán contenernos.
¡Adelante!
SIR JOHN (a sus hombres)
¿Qué traición es ésta?
¡Luchad valientemente!
¡Si atacáis con ardor,
Ricardo os armará caballeros!
¡York al ataque!
York and Saint George!
LADY CLIFFORD, WOMEN (to Henry)
Save thyself and fly!
(praying)
Ah! Horror and madness!
Death-dealing rattle!
Giver of gladness,
Hope of the human,
keep them from battle!
Thou that from sins men
savest by women,
all men are kinsmen,
all blood is common!
Keep them from battle!
Keep from the battle!
ANNIE My father, hold! I love him! Him alone!
LADY SAINT JOHN Folly and madness!
Sorrow refusing,
gathering gladness,
striving and straining,
happiness choosing!
Still for the morrow
there are remaining
watches of sadness!
Night-time of sorrow
Fate is ordaining!
Ah! Hold! Ah! Hold! Ah! Hold!
¡Por York y San Jorge!
LADY CLIFFORD, MUJERES (a Henry)
¡Sálvate y huye!
(rezando)
¡Ah, horror y locura!
¡Temible el ruido de las armas!
Tú, que esparces dicha
y esperanza a la humanidad,
¡no permitas que luchen!
Tú, que a través de una mujer
salvaste a los hombres del pecado,
¡todos somos hermanos!
¡todos tenemos la misma sangre!
¡No permitas que luchen!
¡No permitas que luchen!
ANNIE ¡Padre, escúchame! ¡Lo amo! ¡Lo amo sólo a él!
LADY SAINT JOHN ¡Locura y desesperación!
¡Rechacemos las penalidades,
busquemos la alegría,
que todos nuestros esfuerzos
se encaminen hacia la felicidad!
¡Pero el mañana
nos reserva
horas de tristeza!
¡El destino nos traerá aún
una noche oscura!
¡Ah, deteneos! ¡Deteneos!
ACT THREE
(A chamber in Saint John's abode)
SIR JOHN'S MEN (on guard duty, offstage)
Said Dick to the Devil,
"Come, sell me your dice.
They are loaded, I know, and will throw double sice."
Dick won without trouble by thowing sice double,
till Nick cried,
"Oh, oh! You must pay for the sice!"
(Enter Sir John, reading a despatch.)
SIR JOHN "The Earl of Richmond landed,
and, welcomed by the (commons),
Earl Rivers, many noble
TERCER ACTO
agreed to join his banner.
Haste, haste with al] your forces."
My men are disaffected!
I dare not give the order!
On Richard's brow sits murder
and men avert their faces.
Can Richard's star be waning?
(Enter Lady Saint John.)
LADY SAINT JOHN (aside)
Alas! The days are gathered and laid by
when I could make his care and trouble fly!
Why did the envious world
between us roll
and spoil that happy harmony of soul?
(to Sir John)
Ah! Let me lighten thy presaging gloom,
dear husband, shadow of advancing doom!
Ah! Let me rampart with affection's force
the onward-curling billows of remorse.
Eleven hours have sounded!
Oh, husband, make for justice
and escape the nearing dangers
by seeing Clifford rightful!
That you and I, now strangers,
may be again united.
SIR JOHN As ever, Sybil, croaking!
A pretty plan thou preachest!
I, who deceived his kinsman,
submit to Henry Tudor!
A simple way to favour!
'Tis thine to practise dreaming;
leave me to do the scheming.
(Sir John makes to leave. Lady Saint John
endeavours to detain him, but without success.)
LADY SAINT JOHN Ah! could I lighten his presaging gloom
or stay the shadow of advancing doom!
Ah! could I rampart with affection's force.
these onward-curling billows of remorse!
HENRY (from without)
Lady, 'tis the trysting hour!
Love has come to seek the bower!
ANNIE Oh, mother dost thou hear? 'Tis Henry's voice!
LADY SAINT JOHN How carne he hither?
han abrazado su bandera.
¡Rápido, ven aquí con todas tus tropas!"
¡Mis hombres están descontentos
y no me atrevo a dar esa orden!
(Entra Lady Saint John.)
LADY SAINT JOHN (aparte)
¡Ay, qué lejos quedan los días
en que yo podía aliviar sus preocupaciones!
¿Por qué el mundo envidioso
se ha interpuesto entre nosotros
arruinando la feliz armonía de nuestras almas?
(a Sir John)
volvamos a estar unidos.
SIR JOHN Sibila, ¡como siempre graznando!
¡Qué hermosos proyectos!
¡Yo, que traicioné a su pariente,
ahora me inclino ante Enrique Tudor!
¡Qué fácil resulta decirlo!
Tú deliras...
¡Déjame decidir a mí!
(Sir John se dispone a salir, Lady Saint John
intenta retenerlo sin éxito)
LADY SAINT JOHN ¡Ah, si él me dejara ahuyentar
ANNIE By the postern door.
HENRY His finger on his lip is laid.
Past scenting hound and spying groom
he moves, like moonbeam through the gloom,
to seek thee in thy bower, dear maid!
LADY SAINT JOHN Dear child, I do remember me of love.
'Tis perilous! Be brief, while I keep watch.
(Exit Lady Saint John.)
HENRY (entering, and approaching Annie)
'Tis I, sweet friend!
To thee I bend!
ANNIE My heart is faint!
HENRY Fear not, dear saint!
Alas! Alas! Our love must have an end!
ANNIE That may the Maker of our love forfend!
HENRY Fear not, dear saint!
ANNIE Ah! my heart is faint!
HENRY Adieu, mine own heart true!
None other read I can.
But I must to the greenwood go alone,
a banished man!
ANNIE My heart is faint!
Ah! All woe and bliss,
as reason is,
I'll share with thee anone,
for in my mind
of all mankind
I love but thee alone!
HENRY Alas! Alas!
Adieu!
Mine own heart true!
ANNIE Adieu!
I'll share with thee anone!
ANNIE Por la puerta secreta...
HENRY El amor camina sigiloso,
eludiendo a sabuesos y criados;
LADY SAINT JOHN Querida... ¡aún recuerdo lo que es amar!
Cuidado... sed breves... yo vigilaré.
(Sale Lady Saint John.)
HENRY (entra y se acerca a Annie)
¡Soy yo, querida!
¡Ante ti me postro!
ANNIE ¡Mi corazón se estremece!
HENRY ¡No temas, querida!
Pero, ¡ay, vengo a decirte adiós!
ANNIE ¡Que no lo permita el Creador!
HENRY ¡No temas, querida!
ANNIE ¡Ah, mi corazón se estremece!
HENRY ¡Adiós, corazón mío,
nunca te olvidaré!
Pero ahora debo ir al bosque,
¡soy un desterrado!
ANNIE ¡Mi corazón se estremece!
¡Ah, todos los sinsabores
y todas las alegrías
muy pronto compartiré contigo,
pues entre todos los hombres,
mi alma
sólo te ama a ti!
HENRY ¡Ay! ¡Ay!...
¡Adiós!...
¡Corazón mío, adiós!
ANNIE ¡Adiós!...
¡Pronto estaré contigo!
ANNIE, HENRY I love but thee alone!
HENRY Lady, 'tis the trysting hour!
Quick, let us flee!
The way is free!
ANNIE Who will deny
to do as I,
true lovers are they none!
HENRY Fear not, dear saint!
ANNIE But in my mind
of all mankind
I love but thee alone!
HENRY Rather than ye should thus, for me,
receive the neighbours' ban,
forth will I to the greenwood go,
alone, a banished man.
ANNIE My heart is faint!
HENRY Fear not, dear saint!
To thee I bend!
Alone, our love must have an end!
Fear not, dear saint!
ANNIE Ah! All woe and bliss,
as reason is,
I'll share with thee anone!
My heart is faint!
HENRY Fear not, dear saint!
To thee I bend!
(Sir John appears at the casement.)
SIR JOHN My shepherd lord, I wish thee joy!
My daughter proves a fair decoy!
I thank thee, daughter. Get thee gone!
(Sir John enters; Henry draws his sword.)
ANNIE (to Henry)
Thou dost not deem my thoughts were base?
HENRY
ANNIE, HENRY ¡Sólo te amo a ti!
HENRY Querida, aprovechemos este momento...
¡Rápido, huyamos!
¡El camino está libre!
ANNIE ¡Quien se negara
a actuar como yo,
mal amante sería!
HENRY ¡No temas, amada mía!
ANNIE ¡Entre todos los hombres,
mi alma
sólo te ama a ti!
HENRY Si me acompañas
al bosque,
también tú muy pronto
serás una proscrita.
ANNIE ¡Mi corazón se estremece!
HENRY ¡No temas, amada mía!
¡Ante ti me postro!
¡Nuestro amor nunca tendrá fin!
¡No temas, amada mía!
ANNIE ¡Ah, todos los sinsabores
y todas las alegrías
muy pronto compartiré contigo!
¡Mi corazón se estremece!
HENRY ¡No temas, amada mía!
¡Ante ti me postro!
(Sir John aparece en la ventana.)
SIR JOHN ¡Querido pastor, me alegro de verte!
¡Mi hija ha sido un buen cebo!
Hija mía, te doy las gracias. !Y ahora vete!
(Sir John entra y Henry saca su espada)
ANNIE (a Henry)
¿No pensarás que te he traicionado?
HENRY
Thy thoughts beseem thy lovely face.
ANNIE My father's blood
shed not. Forbear!
HENRY His fatherhood alone I spare!
SIR JOHN (to Henry)
Put up thy sword!
Why didst not keep,
my shepherd lord,
to tending sheep?
This road must lead
to London town,
thy cause to plead
before the Crown!
ANNIE Have mercy, father! Wouldst thou slay
thy child that never did thee wrong?
Remember yet thy youthful day,
when love was sweet and life was long.
Remember yet!
Remember, when a babe I lay,
how oft alone my feeble feet
and follish fingers thou didst say;
"May life be long and love be sweet!"
Remember yet!
SIR JOHN (to Annie)
Cease, cease thy weeping wild
and listen, wayward child.
(to Henry)
On one condition, life and fee
King Richard will restore to thee!
The name of Clifford is a sound
that knight and yeoman rally round;
the Throne is threatened from the sea.
Go! Raise the banner, draw the sword
for Richard and thy native land!
Go, take the field and thou art free!
(Henry hesitates.)
If thou obey the King's command,
I pledge to thee my daughter's hand.
ANNIE (to Henry)
Shall loyalty to phantom right
our yearning heart estrange?
For cause of love, a gallant knight
all other cause may change!
Love, only love of lily hue
¡Detente!
HENRY ¡Le perdono porque es tu padre!
SIR JOHN (a Henry)
¡Envaina tu espada!
¿Por qué no te quedaste,
querido pastor,
cuidando las ovejas?
Este camino te conducirá
a Londres,
donde podrás defender tu causa
ante la Corona.
ANNIE ¡Ten piedad, padre!
¿Matarías a tu hija si nunca te hizo daño?
Recuerda tu juventud,
cuántas veces me decías:
"¡Que la vida te sea larga y el amor dulce!"
¡Recuérdalo!
SIR JOHN (a Annie)
¡Deja de llorar
y escucha, niña terca!
(a Henry)
(Henry duda.)
Si obedeces la orden del rey,
te prometo la mano de mi hija.
ANNIE (a Henry)
needs no uncertain dye!
Then let us wear the only true
love-colour, thou and I!
SIR JOHN (to Henry)
Fortune alters trust and treason!
Folly falters out of season!
But the wise man still advances
to be prizeman with the chances.
HENRY Who for pleasure may do treason,
sell for treasure heart and reason,
search the glory of tradition,
honour's story, with derision?
Love and duty war within me!
ANNIE Ah!
HENRY (to Annie)
Ah! Tempt me no more. I fear the stain.
ANNIE Love's rose has none at all.
HENRY Honour and fealty remain!
ANNIE Their roses fade and fall.
HENRY Love, loyalty, both tear my breast!
Love, loyalty, both tear my heart!
ANNIE There let these petals lie!
Ah!
(Annie fastens a white rose on Henry's breast.)
ANNIE, HENRY Far from the battling world we'll rest
in roses, thou and I!
SIR JOHN (aside to Annie)
Sweet is duty!
Sad is slaughter!
By thy beauty,
o my daughter,
thou art turning
back invaders,
I am earning
fame and favours!
ANNIE, HENRY
no tiene necesidad de ningún otro tinte!
¡Sigamos pues al color
del amor verdadero!
SIR JOHN (a Henry)
ANNIE ¡Ah!
HENRY (a Annie)
¡Ah, no me tientes!.... ¡Temo manchar mi honor!
ANNIE ¡La rosa del amor es inmaculada!
HENRY ¡Honor y lealtad son bienes supremos!
ANNIE Esas rosas se ajan y mueren.
HENRY ¡Amor y lealtad dividen mi pecho!
¡Amor y lealtad dividen mi corazón!
ANNIE ¡Lleva esta rosa con orgullo!
¡Ah!
SIR JOHN (aparte a Annie)
¡Dulce es el deber
y triste la guerra!
Gracias a tu belleza,
hija mía,
harás que los sublevados
retrocedan
y que yo alcance
gloria y honor.
ANNIE, HENRY
Ah! We'll rest in roses, thou and II
(Enter Lady Clifford, with her attendants.)
LADY CLIFFORD Remember Towton!
(Henry takes Annie by the hand and leads her
over to her father.)
HENRY (aside)
Yes, I have sinned
against the light!
Now am I proved
unworthy knight!
For earthly meal
I bartered heaven.
(to Lady Clifford)
To thee I kneel
to be forgiven!
For fear of pain,
I fled from right!
Grant me again
to be thy knight!
LADY CLIFFORD For fear of pain
flee not the right!
Be thou again
my fearless knight!
Rise, Henry mine,
in honour's rank to shine!
HENRY (to Sir John)
To turn a traitor I refuse
and rather death with honour choose!
SIR JOHN (to Henry)
By women's voices led,
the axe awaits thy head!
ANNIE May God be with thee, husband mine!
HENRY I cannot tell the thoughts I would!
ANNIE, HENRY My spirit would encourage thine
to bear the part as lovers should.
SIR JOHN (to Henry)
The axe awaits thy head!
¡Ah, viviremos entre rosas, tú y yo!
(Entra Lady Clifford, con su séquito.)
LADY CLIFFORD ¡Recuerda Towton!
HENRY (aparte)
¡Sí, me he apartado
de mi camino!
¡De ahora en adelante
seré indigno de llamarme caballero!
He cambiado el cielo
por un alimento terrenal.
(a Lady Clifford)
¡Ante ti me arrodillo
e imploro tu perdón!
¡Por miedo a los sufrimientos,
me aparté del camino recto!
¡Permíteme ser de nuevo
tu caballero!
LADY CLIFFORD ¡Por miedo a los sufrimientos
te apartaste del camino recto!
¡Sé de nuevo
mi intrépido caballero!
¡Levántate, Henry mío,
y que tu honor brille conforme a tu rango!
HENRY (a Sir John)
¡No soy un traidor!
¡Antes prefiero morir con honor!
SIR JOHN (a Henry)
SIR JOHN (a Henry)
¡Ya el hacha aguarda tu cabeza!
HENRY (to Sir John)
To turn a traitor I refuse
and rather death with honour choose!
ANNIE (to Henry)
My spirit would encourage thine
to bear the part as lovers should.
HENRY (to Sir John)
To turn a traitor I refuse
and rather death with honour choose!
SIR JOHN What ho! The guard! The guard!
SIR JOHN'S MEN (entering)
Said Dick to the Devil,
"Come, sell me your dice!"
OUTLAWS (offstage)
Richard is dead, and Richmond reigns!
(Lady Saint John appears stage rear and points
to the approaching outlaws.)
LADY SAINT JOHN So sounds the horn of gloom!
(Enter the outlaws, followed by a herald.)
OUTLAWS Richard is dead, and Richmond reigns!
SIR JOHN'S MEN Said Dick to the Devil,
"Come, sell me your dice!"
HERALD Richard is dead, and Richmond reigns!
At Bosworth field his crown was won.
To Henry Clifford, rightful heir of Bolton,
Barden, and Blencathara,
lordship and land the King restores,
to him commits in custody
the body of John Saint John, knight!
OUTLAWS, SIR JOHN'S MEN Hail, all hail, our shepherd lord!
(Sr. John draws his sword as if to escape, but
his own men oppose him; he desists, and
presents his sword to Henry. Henry takes it and
gives it to Annie, who remains kneeling,
pleading for mercy for her father.)
HENRY (a Sir John)
¡No soy un traidor!
¡Antes prefiero morir con honor!
ANNIE (a Henry)
HENRY (a Sir John)
¡No soy un traidor!
¡Antes prefiero morir con honor!
SIR JOHN ¡Ei!... ¡Guardia! ¡A mí la guardia!
HOMBRES DE SIR JOHN (entrando)
Bolton, Barden y Blencathara,
el rey le restituye título y tierra,
ordenándole arrestar al caballero
John Saint John!
PROSCRITOS, HOMBRES DE SIR JOHN ¡Hurra!
HENRY Not mine vengeance!
Not mine repayment!
(to Sir John)
Take thou thy weapon.
Three years, I chase them,
be thou a Shepherd,
on lone Blencathara.
There shall thy lady
weave her enchantment,
till she have taught thee:
infinite grandeur
dwells in the heavens,
infinite meanness
dwells on this earth-mote.
SIR JOHN All is lost - honour and glory!
ANNIE My father!
SIR JOHN God bless thee, my child!
(Lady Saint John takes her husband's hand.
Annie kisses them both, then they leave.)
ANNIE My father!
OUTLAWS, SIR JOHN'S MEN Hail! Hail! All hail!
Cur shepherd lord
is now restored!
Both roses flourish, red and white,
in love and sisterly delight!
HENRY ¡No deseo venganza!
¡No exijo reparación!
(a Sir John)
Toma tu arma.
ANNIE ¡Padre!
PROSCRITOS, HOMBRES DE SIR JOHN ¡Hurra!... ¡Hurra!... ¡Hurra!...
¡El pastor, nuestro señor
ha restaurado su derecho!
¡Las rosas, rojas y blancas,
florecen en el amor y la fraternidad!
