REFLEXIVE OR EMPHATIC PRONOUNS
REFLEXIVE.They are used as objects of the verb when the action of the verb returns to the doer. The subject and object
of the sentence are the same person.
I hurt myself.
The boys hid themselves.
EMPHATIC. They are used to emphasise a noun or pronoun.
e.g. She herself opened the door.
The town itself is not very large.
Página 4
** An emphatic pronoun can be removed from the sentence without affecting its core meaning. A reflexive pronoun, on the
other hand, is vital. The sentence wouldn’t make complete sense on removing the reflexive pronoun.
e.g. She herself opened the door.
She opened the door. (no change in the meaning)
I hurt myself.
I hurt. (illogical sentence)
